Hello,NEVER RENT FROM THIS PLACE...TAKE IT FROM A US MARINE. WE ARE TAKING LEGAL ACTION AGAINST THIS PLACE.IF I COULD GIVE THIS PLACE A 0, I WOULD. THEY DONT DESERVE A SINGLE STAR.Im a former Marine Officer and my daughter lived here for less than 8 months, this year. NO MORE!!PLEASE AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COST. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR KID TO LIVE HERE. IN OUR OPINION, SERVICES ARE SUBSTANDARD HERE AND WHEN MY DAUGHTER MOVED OUT THEY CHARGED EACH ROOMMATE $1200 (5 OF THEM) IN SUPPOSED MAINTENANCE ITEMS AFTER SHE MOVED OUT.I INSPECTED THE ROOM BEFORE WE LEFT, AND I CAN ASSURE YOU, THERE WAS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE APARTMENT. MY DAUGHTERS ROOM WAS SPOTLESS.HOWEVER, THESE INDIVIDUALS (FOR LACK OF A BETTER WORD) DECIDED THAT THEY WOULD PLAY GAMES AND KEEP OUR DEPOSIT AND THEY WANT ANOTHER $550 DOLLARS.THEY SENT A SUMMARY OF DAMAGES, WHICH, LOOKS LIKE THEY PLANTED TRASH AND OTHER OBJECTS TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE THEY ARE OWED THE MONEY.NONE OF THIS WAS THERE WHEN MY DAUGHTER LEFT.NEVER, EVER, EVER,EVER, ALLOW YOUR KID TO LIVE HERE.MONEY IS NOT A PROBLEM FOR ME. BUT IT IS THE PRINCIPLE AND THE LACK OF CANDOR FROM THESE PEOPLE THAT MAKES ME CRINGE THINKING ABOUT THIS.TAKE IT FROM A MARINE!!!DONT RENT HERE...YOU WILL DO BETTER SOMEWHERE ELSE. DONT FALL FOR THE LOOKS OF THIS PROPERTY.IT IS ALL BULL.....!THANKS.RUBEN ORTIZMBA, USMC RET.

As someone who has lived at 3 different housing complexes in harrisonburg, your money can be better spent elsewhere. The front office and maintenance staff were often rude when we had to interact with them. Their guest parking process is a hassle even though the parking spots were never full. They fine the residents every chance they get and try to find every little issue to charge for at move-out. We were once fined because one of the chairs from the back porch blew onto the grass during a storm when we were not home. Amenities are also not very accessible.

My daughter has lived at The Retreat now for two years and absolutely loves it! We actually ended up signing again for her last year at JMU. If youre looking for a beautiful place not far from campus you should totally check it out! The staff has always been wonderful to work with and maintenance is awesome!

This is my second year living at the retreat. I enjoy the location of my cottage and the atmosphere here, but there are a few things that I wish could be different. For example, no one ever answers the phone in the office. At this point in time, they require us to call before showing up at the office but we can never get the things we need if no one answers the phone. Dont have your office hours be at certain times if no one is actually working. Second, the price is not necessarily worth the size of the room I have. I am moving to another community next year and am paying almost $100 less per month for a room that is twice the size. Other than the price and the occasional office issues, I have no other problems with the retreat. The maintenance is always timely and efficient and the amenities are great. Overall, the past two years here have been great.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoy my stay here at the retreat and I am glad I picked this location to spend two of my college years. The community around is friendly, helpful and safe.. which is a few of my priorities when I choose to live somewhere. The only complaint I have is the access/limitations the residents have towards the amenities during this unusual COVID time (the pool, gym, tanning beds, etc). Paying nearly $600+ and not getting full access to amenities in my opinion is very frustrating. I understand COVID protocols have to be followed, but if that is the case, then do not make residents pay the amount we are paying to live here for amenities we barely have access to because of the restrictions. Oh, and another opinion of mine, visitor parking spots should be provided!! Every time I would like a visitor parking pass I have to pay for it... I think visitor parking spaces should 100% be taken into consideration!!

When it comes to applying for a lease at this place I highly advise to make sure the information you are being told is correct. I applied, not signed a lease, for a sublease. I was told if I applied on the given day, that my application fee, $200, would be waived by a promo code. The code did not work so they told me to pay it then and they would refund me later. However, I was charged anyway, because I was told misinformation on who and when that $200 waived fee applies too. Then I had to cancel the app because of outside circumstances, and that is when I found out about the fee. So I ended up losing $200 in the end because they could not refund me the money even though I was told misinformation.

If I had to pick between living in retreat again or living in an insane asylum Id hands down, no hesitation pick the asylum. Their management consists of pathological liars who make stuff up to fine you for, are in no way flexible with rent prices despite restricting amenities, and are some of the rudest people ever. I would say living in a carboard box is considered to be more of a retreat than this place. Also they send to many emails. Your 17th email about me wanting me to resign isnt gonna convince me when Ive ignored the previous 16.

I spoke with Shianna, one of the manager, she told me that my application/lease was on a contingency basis on me filling the whole house, if I could not fill the house my application would be cancelled and I would get my money back as they only had 1 full open house left. I cancelled my lease after I could not fill the whole house so others can get a chance to and now they wont return my $200 application fee after they told me they would. They are very unprofessional and unethical. The reviews are right, they will try and steal money from you every chance they get and I am not even a resident!!!

Review №43

Honestly, Im not sure where to start with this review. My experience here has been unilaterally poor, there has been no effort on the side of the retreat to make this equitable in any capacity. In other terms, the Retreat vastly overcharges from the top down. It is essentially a potemkin village, nice on the outside (and only the front at that), and absolutely pitiful on the inside. The room they advertised versus the one they gave me were two very different sizes and overall the guest service is the worst. Stay away unless you dont mind overpaying and not receiving your end of the deal.

The Retreat at Harrisonburg has a reputation as being the most luxurious of all the student housing available to JMU students. In my experience, Retreat has lived up to this reputation. The amenities Retreat offers are one of its best features; however, due to coronavirus they have been closed, but when they are open they are very nice to use. The Retreat is also the highest in elevation of any student housing, which means that it has stunning views of the valley all the time. The maintenance workers are friendly, helpful, and respond in a timely manner. All of the employees are 10/10 helpful and friendlyI have, however, chosen to give the retreat only four stars because I believe there is one minor thing that needs improvement. The parking situation. Currently, they have no guest spots, so if youd like to have a guest spend the night, youll need to either check out a parking pass from the front desk or buy a permanent pass for $300. There is almost never scarcity of parking spots, so I think that the retreat should simply add guest spots in the parking lot, instead of the current parking system, which is just a clear money-grab.Besides this, the Retreat is a fantastic and peaceful place to live.

Been living at the retreat for 3 years now and over the 3 years it’s progressively gotten worse. Overall comfortable housing but reason why they get 2 stars is because the front desk needs work and these people literally will fine you for ANYTHING. The door handle on our microwave got unscrewed and had to pay 100$ for it...? The people working are either always rude or don’t know anything and say they will get back to you and never do. Also, the never ending construction work that’s been going on all day every day is terrible and a huge mess. hit or miss living here. not coming back again for next year.

This place does not perform the bare minimum effort to get anything done.I had to move out in order to travel to another state. I had done all the workin finding a sublease to take over the room, but instead of following through, I ended up finding out from the sublease that the office had not process the paperwork and so now I am left with paying for two rooms in two different states because they didnt follow through and keep contact with me.Maintenance service requests also require daily follow ups when not performed. Sometimes you end up waiting weeks for fixes. Do not rent here unless you are ok with bare minimum service

Our experience has been a bit spotty. The communication from the office personnel is inconsistent and usually provided with a bit more attitude than needed. The concept of customer service is lacking and requires some improvement. Every time we turn around there is another fee for paying our rent or being forced in to an insurance premium so read your contract thoroughly before signing. I would think much of this should be included in the cost of the rent since it is over priced for a place in VA. I think the manager is trying, but they have work to do.
