The staff were friendly and helpful in locating a family member and providing a map that was easy to navigate. Most people will recognize the birds in flight mural on the exterior West side of mausoleum, which is the largest outdoor hand painted mural in the United States.

Poor communication and response time about the cremation and the urn placement process. It required 2 phone calls on my part to get the information I needed.

Wilhelms Portland Memorial has significantly reduced hours in which one can visit the mausoleum. Currently, it is closed on weekends. This makes it very difficult for family to visit and place flowers, when they must also continue to work. During the week, the mausoleum closes at 4 pm. Again, very difficult to access during working hours. Be sure to check hours before visiting as they may have changed.

Our family has 3 generations here. I’ve been going to put flowers on tombs for 60 years. My daughters have gone with me since they were kids, and learned the family history about people they never got the chance to meet. The remodeling done over the past 20 years has made it much nicer there. I plan on continuing the tradition, and being put to rest with my family.

Laura, Julie and Brian were all very thoughtful and easy to work with. They answered all of my questions and really took the time to listen to what I needed after the passing of a family member who I needed cremation service for. They have easy to understand costs and services offered and there was no sales pressure. I plan to have a service at their location as well later on once my family can be together, as the chapel is a lovely place for family and friends to gather to honor someone who has passed. Laura did a fantastic job communicating with me. Everything about this place feels calm and peaceful, I would recommend them to anyone needing funeral services.

One set of grandparents are at rest within Wilhelm Portland Memorial Funeral Home. I accompanied my grandmother on many occasions when she wanted to be with my grandfather or she needed to talk to someone in the funeral home. On one of or visits, one of the men employees took my father and me on a tour of the facilities. His depth of knowledge and respect for those interned was amazing. He asked cogent questions about our family and then directed us toward things and crypts relevant to us.

A tour of this amazing Mausoleum is a fascinating way to look at 150 years of Portland history, art and craftsmanship. The things that have changed over time and those that have not, give great insight into our culture. Michelle, our docent, presented the story of this facility with respect for those interred and dedication to the Wilhelm mission.

I’d asked for a non-sales event before going to make final arrangements for my mother. Everything was pushed and circular. I finally realized that the person was trying to stir up family members to have us spend. It wasn’t about the money we have plenty of that is was that we really wanted a plain wooden box for the ashes. And that was just the beginning. We have 4 family members there and have spent a lot of money. There was no time to get a since of place as to where the others are in relation to where mother would be. It was all about them and very little about us.

Used to be a well run place. I recently went to take flowers to put in a niche for my grandparents remains and for an aunt. There doesnt seem to be any maintenance going on in the older sections. Had to run water for 5 minutes just to get clean water for the flower vases. Nothing but rusty nasty water came out if the faucets.Went to the oldest section to the other niche. No power anywhere, and everything was moldy. No lights on the stairs or in the hallways. It was dark as a tomb, and Im not trying to make a pun. The place was just nasty. It aught to be shut down.Id like to move my relatives ashes out of the place to someplace decent, but they told me theyd charge $750 per niche just to open the little glass doors and hand me the urns.

I have always thought that healing from grief begins after the funeral or service. I can now say it can begin much sooner. Our family suffered a tragic, sudden loss with my sisters death on a late Friday afternoon. Mike Ashe, and his son Ben, had facilitated my moms viewing and cremation almost 14 years ago. When I got the call from my nephew of my sisters passing, I looked up Mikes number and called. Mike gave me the number for Heritage and assured me everything would be taken care of and that he would meet with the family on Monday. I dont know the name of the man who answered the phone, but he was very kind and assured me someone would be there right away. I dont know who the guys were who picked up my sister with such compassion and dignity. I dont know the people who catered our reception. I do know Mikes name, and he helped us through the planning, viewing and reception with great care and compassion for the entire family. I realized as I drove home after all the goodbyes, healing of the grief began from the first phone call thanks to your great staff.Coments I received:My nephew regarding all Mikes help, He is so amazing and Im so grateful for all he has done for us My oldest sister, That was so unbelievably wonderful. My niece, The Time of Relection was beautiful and mom looked so peaceful.

After my mother passed, we called about arrangements at Wilhelms where she had prepaid for a niche. At the first 30 minute appointment we got very confused by the staff member who seemed more interested in selling my sister a niche than dealing with my mothers internment. She didnt know where the niche was or show us rooms for services or obituary options. She couldnt answer about urns or measurements of the niche. We werent shown the chapel -prices were given quickly. She announced we were out of time, plus we needed more time to think on our utter confusion. We left feeling like we were imposing. So we scheduled another appointment in a week. She called to change this appointment two times. At this appointment, we were told upon sitting down (and I quote) Ladies, I have another appointment in less than an hour, we need to get through this or we will need to reschedule again. The gal was downright snotty.Because my mother had prepaid for a niche, we had to go back to release the trust and order lettering. We felt the staff member thought we should know what was happening and we felt like we were wasting her time. In this meeting, she called my mom Very lucky because they allowed her to trade in a vault for a niche many years ago after she decided to be cremated. She said this was unheard of. Lucky? She paid for it! I was there. They ended up with more real estate and more money because the price had went up over the years. Plus, why even bring this up? Shes not lucky, shes dead! Instead, answer some of our questions!Nonetheless, after rushing through this meeting in (and I quote from her) Record time we noticed she immediately left the building.Bottom line- Wilhelms staff (of all people) should understand that not everyone is an expert in death arrangements. They should be more helpful and keep focus on a tender situation. Maybe have a price sheet or pamphlet. They should guide families. Any selling of additional products and services will flow naturally from guidance. We were not allowed to think on or discuss the price of a service because it took time. (Shed have to call in the funeral director, etc...) It was like a car sale in which you never get to see the car. Like the offer expires once you leave the building. Like now or never. We chose never.Ive learned things always work out for the best. We ended up having a lovely ceremony down the street at the Old Pioneer Church. Warm and inviting.Take your time. Make this a special time for you and your family. Step away and weigh your options.

Our family is originally from the Portland area so when my Uncle passed in September of 2011 the family used Wilhelms for his arrangements. They were professional, caring and reasonable in their pricing. So when my Dad passed away in April of 2017 in Arizona, we immediately called Michael and he loving cared for every detail lifting a load of burden off our shoulders at a time of deep sorrow! With excellence he handled everything from arrangements to care for the body in Phoenix and having it shipped to Portland (arranging the flight and letting us know so family could travel with his body) to going the extra mile and contacting the local fire department for extra pall bearers we requested.(my Dad was a retired fire fighter)(such a memorable part of his burial to have those firefighters there!)His explanations regarding needed products & services were kind, clear and extremely fair and we are SO GRATEFUL for how we were treated in a time when we could have easily been taken advantage of because of our sorrow. Thank you Wilhelms, and especially Michael, for your integrity and generosity in serving our family. We deeply appreciate it! May God continue to bless you for your excellent service!

Comprehensive packages help you take the worry out of the cost and planning. I kept asking about additional fees and they kept explaining that everything was included. If you have a family member who is retired military, there are significant hoops and considerations, which they help you navigate in minutes. I kept wondering what the upsell would be and there never was one. Dont waste your energy by shopping around. Wilhelm/Valley Memorial posts fees on their website. No surprises, except positive ones.
