Captain Dave and deckhand were very nice, just very slow, no work was done while the boat was moving, so upon arrival upon a fishing spot it would take a good amount of time to have any lines in the water. There were moments which the deckhand and captain would both be inside with a fish on, I have 4 years of charter experience in homer, and ended up having to retie my own lines and bait hooks. I had to net a fish for a different party on the boat, I’m happy to do it but never ever should a paying customer need to net a salmon, the deckhand on our trip was very slow and needs to pick up the pace tenfold.

Our group of 4 went out 2/27/21. The boat broke down about 20 minutes into the harbor. Nowhere close to where we needed to be for halibut fishing. We tried fishing for awhile, but nothing. They took us out again in a different boat in the afternoon, but were unable to take us to what they called the honey hole, where the halibut like to be. The captain said he would take us out the next day (which we waited half the next day for a phone call) but that was canceled after we paid! Looking back we should never of paid full price, in cash to the captain. Customer service was not the best, they got gas in the boat while we sat there and waited. Our trip to Homer was planned around the halibut fishing. We saved money and were expecting to at least get out on the ocean and in reality we never were able to leave the bay. If I am to ever go again we definitely will not use Red Door Charters.

Our August 17 trip with Red Door Charters (RDC) was the worst charter experience ever. Here are the highlights:1-The boat we booked was the Ravyness, which is a new boat with twin 300-HP engines and a proper bathroom. Using the old bait and switch, they put us on an ancient little boat called Carol/Anna with twin 150s. This boat lacked the HP to reach the prime fishing waters, so we had to fish close in.2-The substitute boat had only a urinal, not a proper toilet. This was a severe challenge for a bunch of middle aged men on a 10-hour trip. I wont describe what my friend had to do in a plastic grocery bag with no privacy!3-We were supposed to have a captain to pilot the boat, and a deck hand to oversee the fishing. There was no deck hand, and the captain was unable to perform both functions. On several occasions, the captain asked members of our group to drive the boat for him while he fumbled with the fishing gear.4-The boat was supposed to accommodate 6 anglers, and we had 5 in our group. With our 5 plus the captain, we filled every seat in the tiny cabin. If there had been a deck hand, or if we had 6 people, somebody would have been standing out on the deck, which the captain said was illegal while operating at high speeds.5-RDC advertises our captains are experienced in our local waters and deliver some of the best fishing experiences guests can hope for in Homer, Alaska. Bull! Our captain had just arrived from Florida, and he did not appear to be familiar with the local waters.6-The captain was not even a remotely competent fisherman. It took him so long to bait a hook that our lines spent more time out of the water than in. Everybody in our group was an experienced fisherman, and we could have handled our own lines (doing the deck hands job), but the captain would not allow anybody to touch the lines. He would freak out and start screaming like a maniac if anybody dared to adjust the drag.7-Between the captains incompetence and the small size of the boat deck, we rarely had more than two lines in the water at any given time, even though there were 5 anglers.8-Captain Mark was unaware that we had booked a multi-species charter, and he had only planned to take us out for halibut. (This is the owners fault, not the captains.)9-There was no ice on the boat to keep our meager catch cold, which is standard on every charter.10-The captain never filleted our fish, which is part of the service and normally the deck hands responsibility.11-Nobody can guarantee you will catch fish, but as we stood in line at the fish processor, everybody was raving about the outstanding fishing conditions that day, and they were dropping off multiple bins of fillets. Our group had one tiny pile of whole fish that were caught by just 3 people.I sent a detailed report of this debacle to Bob Bornt, owner of RDC. Three days later, Bob called me and said he had other complaints about Captain Mark, and he was going to fire him the next day. Bob conceded that they were shorthanded this season, and at the last minute he hired an unknown captain out of Florida. He also noted that Captain Mark has psychological problems. Before buying RDC, Bob spent 30 years working with the AK Dept of Mental Health, so he speaks from experience. It is disappointing that Bob would recognize mental health issues in Captain Mark and still send him out on a boat with unsuspecting clients. I wont go into details, but Captain Mark is a pathological liar, and anybody who spends 10 minutes with him would immediately identify him as a complete nutjob (sorry if thats not PC).Bob said he would make an adjustment to our charge. While a full refund is obviously in order, I was more pleased that the owner seemed to be taking responsibility and ensuring that nobody elses vacation would be ruined. Since then, Bob has declined to answer my emails, and there has been no adjustment to our charges. It is really sad to come across a small business owner who has no respect for his customers and is completely devoid of integrity.

Bob Bornt the owner conned me into thinking I recd an email notice that I needed a fishing license on the day I showed up to fish. He sent me a fictitious looking email heading that wasnt really an email, just a header. He sent me the notice at 7PM on July 17th supposedly and my email recd it a 11PM, but I was asleep and didnt even check email the next morning as I had all I needed from Fishing Booker who took my money in advance and sent me details I needed to find the boat at the right time etc. Bob insisted this notice of his that I never saw was sufficient to charge me the full amount of a charter and I never left the dock. There was no info. from Fishing booker about a license. If I saw Bornts notice that did clearly state a license was necessary, believe me I would have bought one. I just saw the charge today on my credit card and thought this was so dishonest that I should let his readers know. The skipper could have told me I could have bought a license off my phone that day but it never dawned on him so they could profit more with less work...I dont recommend this charter company because they are bandits.

These guys clearly know their stuff. We spent 8 hours and limited out on Salmon and Halibut. The Captain(Tyler) did an excellent job keeping us informed during our trip and was always there to lend a quick hand when one deckhand was not enough. Wyatt was running around like a jackrabbit fixing lines and grabbing new setups. Between all of the landing of fish from six fisherman, untangling lines and fixing down-riggers, he was busy from the start of the trip to the end. They both really impressed all of us. Excellent day fishing and most of it is thanks to the efficiency of this crew. If i could give more than 5 stars I would!

I feel terrible for posting this almost 8 months after our experience with Red Door instead of right away. However, that should tell you what a wonderful time I had with them that I still think of their company so long after our adventure with them.My husband and I had taken our families on an Alaskan fishing trip; Red Door was who we chose to go halibut and salmon fishing with in Homer. I believe the people we had helping us was Finn and Billy. They were so great in helping us set up the poles, giving direction, making sure everyone caught their maximum allowed fish allotment, all while listening in on their friendly banter. When my dad lost his hat to the sea gods, Finn was so sweet and tried to fish it out of the water but sadly lost the expensive pole he was using to the sea gods as well. Billy was so fast at cleaning the fish that everyone’s catch was ready to go by the time we docked.Thank you to Red Door for making this an unforgettable family trip. To this day both our parents thank us for the great memories. And our freezer is still stocked with halibut.

Absolutely the best charter ever! Bob was great! We had a mix up on dates, and Bob personally worked to find us a spot. The fishing experience was the phenomenal. I would HIGHLY recommend this charter.

Eddy & Nick took us out on the amazing Alaska ocean. We got to see whales and seals. They both were social bugs and knew how to keep us informed. We got very blessed with our catches. I would recommend this company to all friends and family. Fees were appropriate and we surley left a tips for both. The only thing we were bummed about was when we were salmon fishing, we only used 2 rods when there was 4 of us.
