Current resident at umomWe have lived in our van for over a month with 2 adults and 5 children. I cannot express how grateful our family is to have your help. You opened your doors to help us, when everyone else shut their doors. The staff here have been amazing and helpful. Our manager is very courteous, professional, helpful, and amazing. I really cannot express enough gratitude for umom. Umom will always have a place in my heart. For anyone struggling on the waitlist, just know help is out there and they will call you (please check in once a week). Any one looking to sleep overnight in there vehicle, please call 24 hour fitness centers because some will allow you to park and sleep overnight. Thanks again, umom...For everyone complaining of the rooms, beds, housing arrangements and rules. Please keep in mind, this is transitional housing. Umom is meant to keep families from being homeless and help them graduate to affordable living. Any reasonable person would assume there might be somethings wrong with the rooms but thats OK because your not living here long term.Regardless of the condition of the room, its a roof over my kids head and for that, I am forever grateful. It beats sleeping in a van, in the middle of a parking lot, wondering if someone will try to take your stuff. At the end of the day, accept your blessing (stop complaining) and be grateful for what you have...Be blessed....

I am giving this place five stars for the bullshyt system they run.....I feel sorry for the people that turn to them and dont help like they claim they do and to read all these other reviews before mine. Im glad I never had to stay there. I was pregnant had little other babies. Living in my car but they couldnt help me ...I got off my feet on my own. all they do is take names and numbers. My thing is dont take my information to use for your bullshyt grants cuz you aint help nada over here. People get into bad situations and try and they dont even realize it wasnt me suffering it was these children but ok...YALL RIGHT IM STRONGER THEN THE AVERAGE BEING . SO HELP THE ONES THAT MAKE THAT PLACE TRASHY INSTEAD OF A SUCCESS..... THANKS BUT NO THANKS

I wish I could give 0 stars. This place is unbelievable. I was staying at Halle women’s shelter across the street and was 4 months pregnant at the time. My case manager helped me get into the family housing hub once I entered my 3rd trimester. Early in my third trimester (which is now) I have been hospitalized due to preterm labor symptoms. My body is preparing for labor far too early, I am only 30 weeks. I kept my case manager, Kelley Marlar, updated with my status and now I’m kicked out with no where to go after I have my baby. Obviously, since I am in the hospital I wasn’t able to go and retrieve my belongings, which Kelley told me had to be removed by the 17th of May. So my parents went, on the 12th of May, to get my things for me, which was put into 2 large boxes but since my parents are having moving issues of their own, they weren’t able to fit both boxes in their car because of the belongings of their own they already had in their car. My parents return on the 14th of May to retrieve the rest of my belongings and they tell my parents they have moved my things to the storage unit for people who had an exit. They take my parents to the storage, but for some reason now they are lost and now would have to wait until the 17th just to speak to maintenance about where they put my things. When they said they moved my things to their storage unit, but for whatever reason was not there. From the time I told them about my hospitalization they acted insensitive and unapologetic about kicking me out. Now they give me a time limit to get my stuff, and BEFORE the time limit they move my things and now they are lost. Now obviously since I don’t have much, the ONLY clothing I had is gone because of their carelessness and insensitivity. I also had a newborn who passed away last year whose diaper bag I had in the room with his clothes inside that I didn’t wash because they still smelled of him that I held dear to my heart. Now it is lost because of these people and I am completely heartbroken and devastated. I would recommend keeping your stuff together and packed If you’re going to come here because they can and will kick you out at any moments notice, and lose your things and be unapologetic about it... and God forbid you get hospitalized... ***update: IT IS NOW MONDAY MAY17th AND I WAS TOLD THAT THEY HAVE DISCARDED MY BELONGINGS. IM SO TERRIBLY HEARTBROKEN AND DEVASTATED. THESE THINGS CANNOT BE REPLACED..

Though it is great for Hallie House, U Mom to have a great, benevolent concept to house many whom may have been left to their own auspices on the streets, my experience with this organization was nothing short of vile and reprehensible when my room was raided two days within my short stay. This Gestapo-like procedure included a plethora of civil rights violations when i was forced to turn out my pockets, go outside and, not look in the window as one civil right after another was breached. I was so shaken by the event that I believed Umom hated us, and wanted us out. Each of the 4 days I sought shelter no one was treated with apathy or the kind of care that would have fostered leaving towards upward mobility. Instead, we were made to feel ashamed and scared. When the toilet overflowed, no one showed up for two days to fix two feet of overflowing; therefore I had to dip feces out the bowl to lower the pressure. The staff failed to remit supplies, other than thin paper towels. All the staff from Vanessa to the black woman with Gucci braids, were Draconian, rude, malicious in the raid and in each machination dealing with this regrettable stay. As a writer I fell on bad times. Having written a book for the homeless called Caring About Restoring Our Lives, I had written about this particular agency in glowing tones. Whereas they may be great for others I had a harrowing experience. Its important to chronicle this event. 501 cs cant be sued. So, I encourage others that have had similar experiences to write the governing powers, the IRS. Request an audit. Upon detection of civil rights violations Umom can be called up for investigation. Write. Collect evidence until we all are treated with respect as we seek our deserved justice and renewal in bettering our lives.

What a bad experience negative attitudes from the entrance to the office. This place is called UMOM, well if UMOMS is a mother shes toxic. I thought maybe I was being singled out and mistreated but I found out several people were. This is one bitter place and its not the homeless families in need its the workers who need help. Sad😥

My children and I were former residents a couple of times. Sometimes it takes a couple to a few trys before you get it right. It was really hard to go through so many transitions so many times, but it was totally worth it. If I had to do it again I would because I know I can make it. I no longer live in Arizona. I am now in Alabama with my mother and stepdad. I now have my own place for my children. I recently had a baby boy and am in a complicated but happy relationship. Waiting on an approval for a job. I am so grateful for UMOM New Day Center and staff. Thank you for everything. I really didnt know how much criticism I needed until I went through your program how ever many times I needed to. Your program taught me a lot.

I am a current resident here at UMOM , and let me tell you how I’m so grateful to have a place over my head and if it was just me alone , I wouldn’t complain so much. But I have a 2 year old son that has many allergies to dogs etc . The first room I was placed in on my first , all 3 of my beds were covered in bedbugs, the room had a very horrible smell that I had to sleep with the windows open no matter what , my heater didn’t work either so of course I made a complaint and was told I was at the bottom of their list because they were already dealing with bedbugs issues. Right after dinner they decide to change my room from one building to another ( which isn’t an issue ) and now I have mice and roaches . Of course I would rather deal with rodents then pest that are extremely hard to get rid of but come on now people where’s the respect and care for the children that are here.

For those of you who are writing a bad review on this place you obviously have never been homeless! This place is a life saver. They gave me and my family a place to stay and get back on our feet after having to sleep in a park with little children. They gave us a roof over our heads and food in our bellies!!! Of course it isn’t a 5 star resort, but by God it’s better then being on the streets and they give you a job to do while you are there to make you feel needed and create a feeling of community! I am forever grateful for all they did for my family and I when I saw no hope at all!!! Thank You and God bless you all!!!

In 2012, UMOM saved my familys life. Helped us to live in a safe and secure place while getting on our feet. I owe UMOM and will never be able to thank them ENOUGH. Youll see complaints- These are from ungrateful people. If youre down on your luck so to speak, but know how to pick yourself up and dust yourself off, you can overcome homelessness. Yeah its traumatic. But at least: you still have your family, youre all together, and you have UMOM. I hope things get better for you! -Roberta

This place was a very good program at first. And they offer every participant $500 to $1000 towards move in cost at a apartment if you complete the program and have money in a savings account. However it bot only happened to me but at least 5 other that I knew there. Who knows how many that I do not know of. But when you get close to your exit date and when they would be submitting the paperwork to get you the $$ for your move in , they will find a reason to kick you out.. Also they do room searches and literally search through EVERYTHING which is fine with me but they make you leave the room while they do it. They leave your room a mess after doing it.. Also there is a lady named IRENE that works the front desk. Ahe always look miserable and is never friendly. My first day there she was the one working and was very rude. Then come to find out she was once a participant who stayed there her self... So you would think she would know what us females are going through when we enter the program. Also my case worker Gaby was new and had no info as tobgood resources . she had no sympathy towards our situation and needs to come down to earth. She expects more than what can be done when you are working 40+ hours a week at your job

If you are working at a place to help people you should not act like you are better than them. You should not be treating the people like they are nothing. They are trying to get their lives together and get help to better themselves. You are not supposed to be judging them. If you do not have in in your heart to serve the less fortunate then you should be working in a different field. I have known a lot of people that have come to this place to better themselves and they all have said the front desk ladies are rude, judgmental & Talk down to you. They’re snobby, have attitudes and are not nice at all. This is something that they really need to look into. If those ladies dont like their job they need to get a new one. When someone is trying to better their life they don’t need someone judging them for doing so. Also if you stay here be prepared for rats in your room. cockroaches in your things and slop for food. You’re better off trying to find another source for help. This shelter is disgusting from the people who work here to the food they serve. Be careful if you choose to live here.

If you take a look at this organizations social media youll see all the toy donations they accepted during this holiday season. now ask the residents there how many toys did UMOM give away. I can personally answer you and tell you ZERO. Clothes and toys donations are accepted and put away and sorted but never seen again. They are only for putting on a show for the public, in reality they are not as helpful. The blonde lady who runs the daily operations is one of the rudest nastiest ladies who frowns her nose up at residents who dare to speak to her. Of course shes all smiles when donors, high profile volunteers, and cameras are around though. The food is equivalent to jail food with roaches to keep you company if youre feeling lonely. This is after receiving millions of dollars in donations and countless donations from good people who think theyre going to a good cause. There is no help available for emergency shelter I’m not sure why they even exist. There’s a 3 month waiting list for shelter. They closed for four days this past weekend Friday - Monday to celebrate Veterans Day while they turn down veterans with families daily who need their help. The lady was yawning and falling asleep during my interview only for her to tell me to call on Monday’s to stay on the wait list.

Now if you come dont follow rules n just lounge about n do drugs you get kicked out Ive seen people lose their children there. Its not come sit on your butt and do nothing for a hand out it requires hard work. N I didnt even get approved for rapid. Its beyond me but I used my time wisely and do not plan on going back. Several people use it as a revolving door. They never feed you enough and are constantly throwing out food Ive seen it. And they also throw away donations and other stuff. And for Christmas a radio station bought and had a toy drive. And I was there 2 years never once did my family get picked for Walmart Christmas shopping spree. Or even getting the baby stuff we needed now they wont give us furniture they promised us or our case worker did supposedly she didnt get it approved but I have papers n email stating otherwise. Umom is a cool shelter & probably the best type of sheltering program i’ve ever heard of. 120 days of free shelter, plenty of resources & the daycare helps a lot. RA’s do room check once every other week where they come in & see if your room is clean. the RA marissa takes her job entirely way to seriously. my man & i we’re coming home from work & her & 2 other RA were room searching us with gloves & we weeent allowed into our room. they then served us a 3 day notice basically a eviction kicking us out......how are you going to kick out people that are already in a bad situation & have nowhere to go? anyways we got it appealed & we were allowed to stay. the food is sick & they serve the same thing over & over again (i.e. spaghetti, raw & undercooked pink meat) nothing appetizing to be 5 months pregnant & eating but if you don’t eat you will starve lol. the rooms are small & have a mini fridge, 2 beds, a table & chair with a bathroom. you can tell they used to be old motels. rooms are roach infested & our neighbor from down the hallway had a giant rat & a roach on a sticky trap. UMOM will call DCS on you for the simplest thing such as not a watching your kid on the play ground while your putting laundry in the washer, letting them be at other peoples rooms etc etc. everybody is messy & all they do is sit at the play ground & gossip all day. Case Managers have mandatory weekly meetings to follow up on achievements. if you spend your full 120 days in shelter the FSS will send you back to the housing hub to be placed back on the waiting list. cool shelter with a ton of rules.

Time limit, no warning, and they kick people out. Infectious diseases spread like crazy in the daycare. RAs are liars and thieves, never consistent in room checks and things come up missing. Any time you have an issue, they say write a grievance, but it gets a specifically vague response that is almost never a solution(i.e. Thanks for writing about this concern, were looking into it and appropriate action will be taken but nothing ever happens). Food stamps get cut if you report you live here, and they do serve meals, but dont hold your breath if your expecting anything good. Only some of the kitchen staff is willing to work with you if you have allergies and they expect you to call ahead to let them know to make the food for you. They have access to good resources, but most people are too lazy to pursue them, so they end up stuck back on the streets or waiting for the perfect job to fall right into their lap(dream on!).

It’s a really big campus and it’s like being in a gated community. Some people don’t like it because there are curfews. 10 pm for emergency clients and 11 pm for long term residents (transitional). The homeless environment is a mix of cultures. There are Black, White, Hispanic, Native American, and Muslim/middle eastern families. There is no dominant race. Ive lived at UMOM for a year. My year experience so far in the homeless community I live; everyone coming into Umom is struggling, but they are also seemingly rude, inconsiderate, way too much cursing, some kids are out of control and destroy property by breaking windows and there are issues with the laundry rooms and peoples clothes are being stolen. There are fighting and just all around disrespectful Children which I am sure get it from their parents. There are rules in place about clothing attire, but they older children (teens) are wearing clothing that displays violence and drug use.The parents let their kids run around like wild animals. Just because the shelter has walls that keep the kids inside and the unwanted out,, doesn’t give them the right to run free like they are cattle on the range. When you come or go from the facility at Umom, you have to sign in and out in the lobby at the front desk. There are Residential Assistance on staff that are supposed to pay attention to things that are coming in. As an emergency client, you can’t bring in electrical stoves or have toasters in your room. or a double burning to plug into the wall. I pointed it out once, but the RAs on staff said is that they didn’t see it so I must be lying. Also, how can you NOT smell a strong odor of Marijuana when someone comes in to sign in and the person is right there in front of the RA desk? There are drug dealers on campus and not just weed, its like if you need any kind of drug, its here in Umom. The problem is mostly prescription drug medications. and marijuana. In my opinion because I am not s smoker and I dont do drugs of any kind other than my doctor ordered prescriptions. UMOM needs to be a smoke free campus. Since I have lived here, I suffer from Asthma and my child also has mild breathing problems and is constantly coughing because of all the cigarette smoke in the air. I have to walk in the parking lot just to avoid the smoke, but in doing that, you can hear parents yelling and hitting their kids. Why is it that there arent RAs constantly on patrol? Sometimes there are four to six RAs in the desk area or they are sitting around gossiping and not paying attention to the children that are barely being supervised by a parent that has their back turned in the smoking section. There needs to be DCS WORKER on campus at all times. Im a child of an abusive parent and it makes me sick that no one is doing anything to prevent this abuse. The RAs or someone needs to patrol constantly especially on the weekends is worse.Other than that, Umom is a good place to stay, you get three meals a day and there is daycare on campus, but there is a waiting list. Theres also a computer Lab (Cox Technology Career Center) The staff is really nice, but they can only help you so much within Umom guidelines. Make sure when you stay here to READ THE HANDBOOK OF RULES.They have incentives that if you get three zeros on your room checks which are random you can either get a voucher to visit the TOY CLOSET filled with tons of awesome toys like Balls, Barbie Dolls, Trucks, Educational Games and Puzzles. Or you can get vouchers for the clothing closet to get clothing for you and your children along with jewelry, makeup, shampoos and bottles.Their is also a medical facility located behind the RA Desk in the Lobby. Phoenix Childrens Hospital and Health Care for the Homeless. If you are pregnant and dont have anything for your baby. Visit them and put in a request for your baby needs and they will hook you up with clothing, bottles shampoo, lotions and blankets and a stuffed animal even a first aid kit and kit with child nail clippers, hairbrush and stuff like that ...
