I stayed there back in 2002 when my family and I just came to this country. They gave a place to sleep, warm food and even shampoo and soap, etc. Also clothing and shoes and used to take us out for teen night.I dont understand why people would complain. When you go to this kind of place it means you have nothing. And Thank God for this place otherwise me ,my mom and my 3 siblings would have been on the streets. This is not a hotel! If you see thats dirty help clean! My mom used to help out in the kitchen. Be Thankful, they dont have to give anything, they are there to help!A lot of people complaining that they have to attend to church in order to stay there, well guess what if you had a home and someone else would stay with you , you also would have a list of rules.Think about it,God bless you!

Its like a lot of homeless emergency resources in Houston; great resources, poorly distributed. This particular resource center is VERY heavy on religion. Extremely early, yet mandatory, church services. Great to get on your feet, but you need to be focused and put in the effort.

First of all, the staff is evil. They pretend to love working with people then that other no good side eventually comes out. Its a women and family shelter so why are they letting men in here? Its always an issue with them here as Ive witnessed many times. The food is terrible. Every now and again its good. The meatloaf is pink on the inside. The breads are molded. Theres tons of roaches in and around the kitchen. The rules are ridicules. I would never recommend this place to no...not me. Oh yeah last but not least, they will kick you out for odd reasons and put you right out into the street even if you have kids.

In the face if adversity there is always good and bad.The Star of Hope Homeless Shelter is a beacon in the dark.Ive had to utilize the facilities on more than one occasion.Once where I took things for granted and expected more than I was willing to put out. When I made up my mind to get grounded, stay focused and utilize the resources to my advantage... I was successful in my attempts. The Star of Hope is a compact community that consists of many different people from different backgrounds with different mindsets and attitudes. And just like in the real world, you have to make up your mind and do what you need to do.I am thankful, grateful and Blessed by my experience. As for those who constantly complain...they normally stay the full term...so???Be Blessed.

The staff was kind enough to feed, clothe, house, pray for, and see to me and my wife and childrens needs as best they could. Things that could run into thousands of dollars...free of charge! Thank God for Star of Hope and the staff. NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT THAT WHICH IS HEAVEN SENT.

I slept on the floor for 4 weeks. I am 62 with physical limitations. If you write grievances they put you on the streets. If you get upset over no help.... they call you a whiner and tell you to leave. It appears This united way agency does nothing unless they will receive extra funds for keeping you here. They call their employees family service workers to avoid penalization if they call them case workers. I have no help from anyone here. Nothing other than printed lists. The food is almost in edible and not a balanced diet for a child or adult. Its often redone expired food. There is no tv allowed so you are isolated from any current news. No coffee or other drinks except water or milk to the kids. No pillows. They demand religious studies and 3xs a week chapel to secure your stay or enter their housing program. Being grateful for a place to stay is not my issue. Its being treated like a dollar sign and lessor human being. There are no education classes, no AA or other programs. Computer room is only open minimal hours. No parent classes. Out dated employment info. They simply open the door and offer you a 2 inch mat and a military blanket and a place on the floor.

I hated being there!!!! I was there with my 4 children (my son is autistic). They were so rude to my children and me. The food was beyond disgusting. Every week we had a stomach virus. I had to stay for 4 months and out of the whole time nobody would help me help myself. I did everything I was supposed to chores, clean room etc. We were miserable. I would not ever go back. The crime rate was through the roof. When our time was up, my children and I lived in several different hotels... I hate that place. The only good thing that happened was that my relationship with God got stronger.

I went to Star of Hope, on February 12, 2016.I was severely depressed.I had all documents they asked for ID,Birth certificates, shot records etc. I slept on a mat for 2 nights ,then assigned to a room. After 2 weeks I was called for a Housing interview and 1 week after that I was approved!! I found somewhere to live and moved there on the Northside. The SOH do have a lot of rules, youre assigned chores, but you choose a shift and you cant watch TV there. The food is horrible!!!But me and my son barely ate it.They have a church class that is mandatory and I loved it! They give you clothes, shoes, bus cards,a place to live, food and I heard theyve helped ppl clear warrants! They also had a daycare and provide a school bus to take school aged kids to school.I even attended a expensive catered banquet and got my hair and nails done w/ the on site pscychologist & other homeless ladies there.I stayed to myself , kept my ears open and just used the resources.I never thought I would be in a shelter, but I made the best of it and didnt complain,so things would change & I never go back.GOD bless everybody! Use those resources and dont complain.

I moved here from California (the Bay Area ) where my children and I had been homeless for over 7 years. I came to the Stars of Hope on March 8th, at first I was angry and complained like the other ladies commenting, but with in 3 weeks after attending Bible study and Chapel and getting know the staff and case managers my outlook changed. In the 5 months I have been at the Star of Hope I was able to get my section 8 vocher and full time job and attend church regularly and still have time to get my chores done. What people need to understand is that you need to learn to help yourself and ask for the help when you really need it dont demand it. Everything depends on your attitude once you sit back and look at what you are doing and focus on the positive all the blessings start rolling in not to mention the clothing store which is a great help as well and the childcare center if it wasnt for them I wouldnt have been able to go out and get things done. I am very appreciative of all the help I have received during my stay here...Always remember what you put out you get get backAka Reap what you sow...

NEVER GO HERE. This place is straight up abusive to women, especially the disabled! They have some sensible measures to control bugs and I never saw roaches or bed bugs, due to the mats and using bleach on them daily, which they make the clients do without any sort of safety gear-no gloves, no mask, no goggles. They make people see case workers every weekday-of which there are three workers to handle up to 150 women a day. Usually, it ranges about 75-100 women but you can still find women who wait and wait and dont actually see anyone. When they do, the caseworker promises to refer you to all these programs they rattle off and-but they dont actually give you any contact information for any of them and Googling what I did remember brought up nothing. And then when you ask about them, they tell you YOU had to call them, with the numbers you didnt get. And you get told that you could have researched it in the computer lab-which is always closed. The volunteers/workers are very rude, especially in the mornings. They say you can report people but grievances are never investigated and in fact, the case workers stop talking to you about referrals and where to next and give you a notice of how long you have until you have to leave. Trying to change them is futile. One of the issues is their classes and counseling, which are dangerously incompetent to the point of abuse and brainwashing as well. They are required if you need to stay longer than two weeks and you have to retake them if you come back, no matter if you passed. The teacher for the classes is an old preacher who is homophobic and transphobic, who goes on hateful tangents and insults every mother who comes through there for being homeless and neglectful, ignoring that most of them have been abandoned by the fathers. Hes sexist and incompetent, only getting through barely half the material. Thankfully, you only have to pass with half correct, most of which are in short, essay form that he grades with no clear criteria. People he disliked never got full marks. The so called bible counseling I never had direct experience with but people were either very frightened by the counseling or seemed very off and resigned to being homeless for good as well as unwilling to rebel against any authority figure. Its like a cult. They abuse and set up others for abuse. Theyre the option for when its killing cold or hot out and they use up their unemployed longer term clients, even when they are on disability. When a wheelchair-bound woman was accepted into the longer-term program, she was unable to go down the stairs (the offices for the case workers are NOT wheelchair accessible) and they blamed her and kicked her out in the dead of winter because of that. She died two days later of exposure. The food is abysmal, often having hair and being either undercooked or overcooked. Most of the women there who stay longer than a week get food poisoning on a regular basis and many have resorted on spending what little money they have on fast food for their kids because of the food being so detestable. An eyewitness has also told me that they are not only abuse clients, theyre misleading those who donate to them. Those whove donated to the clothing closet can count on the nicest of the donations not being worn by clients but being worn and kept by the staff. A number of kind-hearted Houstonians have donated excellent coats and jewelry as a Christmas surprise-but none of this ever reached the clients. One person received a coat due to being a favorite and the rest were either kept by staff or put up for sale in their thrift store. They are abusers, they are thieves, they dont take complaints seriously, they refuse to assist those whove been robbed though they have cameras everywhere, they dont enforce rules equally and are cruel bigots who give women false hope, ensuring that they cannot actually GET jobs due to their insane overnight rules. I hope anyone who donates to them reads this and donates to Mission of Yahweh or to Mighty Redeemer Church on Canal instead.

I would not even give this shelter one star if I could help it. This place used to be a nice shelter back in the 80s and 90s. Now its a rundown dump. They need to either be reported to the proper authorities, fire their CEO, or close down completely. I had lost my job I had for 13 years during the recession and lost my apartment in 2012. I came here to seek help, because I had done so before back in the 90s and they had a really good program during that time. They also use to not descriminate then if you were a religion other than Christian. Im Wiccan and when I saw one of their counselors, they werent interested in helping me get back on my feet immediately. The first thing she asked me is if I was a saved Christian. I answered her question with a question. I asked her if their program would help anyone who was Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, or Hindu. She ignored my question and told me I had three days to decide if I wanted to become a born again Christian or I would have to seek shelter elsewhere. I saw her say the same thing to a Muslim woman wearing a head scarf and was there because she had been abused by her husband. I saw a look of hopelessness on that poor womans face when they gave her the same ultimatum they gave me. I kept my mouth shut and didnt tell them what religion I was. I also used to donate for several years to this shelter through a United Way drive through my former employer. I got to see where my money went all those years spending one night there. In the CEOs pocket. I wouldnt rate this place safe for your children. They have them sleeping in the common area on mats with severely mentally ill adults who have no hope of getting well. I also witnessed a couple of very elderly women staying there who the staff ignored the whole time and should have been calling adult protective services to get them properly placed in an elderly care program. They were also made to sleep on the matts on the floor instead of being prioritized and being given a bed. Some of us had to help them up from the floor the next morning. Thats the big problem with Christian faith based homeless shelters that believe their way is the only way or they will not help you. They also make some of the people there believe that its either their fault or they did something to deserve to end up in their situation and they tell you to beg for forgiveness. No! Wrong! In my case I just ended up in economic trouble due to a job layoff. They need to have a local news reporter go undercover and spend a couple of nights in that shelter and expose what really goes on there, because nobody seems to believe ordinary people who actually stayed there.

Was there back in 2005 or 06. I had my 3 kids w/ me. I up & left bcuz I thought I didnt need them. Boy was I wrong! Its been almost 12 yrs since then. I wish now Id never left. They had had free counseling, free help with getting bck on your toes after a messed up & abusive relationship. Now my kids & I are paying the price & I wish I could change it all. Now all I can do is pray I change my future & my kids now. Or there will not ever be a change & my son will only continue the abuse on the women in his life. I cant do that to him! Star of hope CAN help me change that so I may just try. Good bless you start of hope!

I cant believe the comments about the SOH! Homeless with 6 kids at the time, the SOH gave me a place to live for 90 days rent free, no bills, gave me & my children free clothes, and helped with counseling & prayers. Thank goodness for the SOH. Some people will complain regardless of how good a place try to be.

I will say there is some good to this place. But i heard that they pay ppl to say nice things about this place and honestly i think its true bc how else could they believe anything else. I wouldnt say not to donate bc there are ppl there who have nothing and nowhere to go and you better believe the staff at star of hope dont let them forget it. They take advantage of ppls situation and they are write up happy. I recently left there and every second security or staff would threaten to write someone up. The comments are true the staff is rude and they think they are better than you. They have the most unrealistic rules so they can make sure that you dont follow them. Staying here keeps you off the street but will lower your self esteem bc those ppl belittle ppl so bad and its sad bc so called Christians know that you dont have anywhere else to go. Its horrible. Its dirty...just filthy. Please unless you are just horribly desperate being in the streets is better than this place. They make you take these so called motivational classes where the teacher tells ppl they are going to hell and talks to them rudely. They make you do chores and tell you bc you have to work for your stay there. I believe theres nothing wrong with that but goodness gracious ive had ppl stay with me and i didnt make them clean or cook or anything bc ppl are homeless and need to be looking for work and a home. They make you do these ridiculous things and you have no time to look for a job or place to stay. The lady who my case worker the black lady with curly hair talks to ppl rudely, everyone says so but when i corrected her on her on she reported me to upper management, then upper management only takes up for the staff. Theyll kick ppl out for the smallest reason. A guy has a son and when went to breakfast he left his son sleep in the bed and they kicked him out for that. Huh? Who wants to wake a sleeping child who i believe is 3. They kicked a guy and his daughter out bc he hit another kid on the butt and said job well done. And also chapel is pathetic and it will make u hate church. If its raining and you dont have a room and dont want to attend chapel they make you stand outside. If you forgot about chapel and its raining you have to stand outside bc god forbid if you interrupt chapel. Yes the food is bad not healthy and the chicken is rarely cooked throughly. Before i left they got me bc they said ppl are not allowed in rooms and while my worker was standing there a friend of mine walked in my room and sat my babys pitcher on the counter. The lady screamed at me that she was not supposed to be in there. I told her huh? I didnt know and she was barely in here. They kicked me and her out for that but i left before the date i had to leave since i was about to leave anyway. The place can deserve one star for some of the friendly staff but this place comes second to hell itself. I could cry not for myself but bc how low those ppl are treated. I would feel so bad for the ones who had nowhere to go bc i would see them having to take the verbal abuse and they couldnt say anything back to them bc they knew they would get kicked out. But were all filthy rags in the eyes of our creator so one person is not better than the other. I dont know how they sleep at night.

Being homeless is very unpleasant, but this place makes it better. I have been in multiple shelters and personal care homes around Texas, and thia is the best of rhem in my opinion. The best part is that God is tbere, amd the worst is sleeping on thin mats waking up at 5 am. I like it and if i am homeless again i wlll call.
