Its tough finding an honest mechanic, especially as a woman. Dave is trustworthy and personable. He will not quote you everything thats wrong with your car and then some. He will fix the necessary stuff (and do it well) and make sure your car is well maintained. I wish I was still living in the area because I cannot find a mechanic I can trust where I live now. If you are looking for a capable and honest mechanic, Dave is your guy!

My first choice for a mechanic in Charlottesville, and theyd be my only choice if they did state inspections. Ive taken my vehicles to them a few times over the years, but I have an anecdote that I think best illustrates what they do. They once pointed out a potential future problem to me that theyd noticed, not to give me a quote, but just as a DIY that I could fix myself.You know that someone is trustworthy when theyre willing to help you out even when it doesnt benefit them.

They are truly the most honest and hard working auto shop I have ever come to. I have gone several times, most recently I came in because my battery needed to get jumped. They promptly checked my battery, and instead of having me stay with them, they personally called Advanced Auto because they knew Advanced could do it cheaper. I found myself at Straight Up Automotive Service -- unannounced on Monday morning -- after my car was vandalized in Charlottesville.The woman running the office and man who inspected my car (I am sorry I did not write down your names) were pleasant and understanding. They spoke to me as if I were a long-time friend.He looked at my car right away, before he even pouring himself a cup of coffee!Car was pronounced safe to drive home, 4 hours away, where I could have the stolen part replaced by your regular mechanic at home. Save yourself some money and worry.I DID get home safely.They did not charge me for their trouble.I am thankful, and hope I will be able to Pay it Forward with similar kindness.

Great staff and service. I’ve been four times and every time I go they do the best work and try their best to give you a fair price. One time I went in for my 50k mile check up and they told me come in the morning. I thought that meant anytime in the morning so I went at 9am but they meant right when they opened. So when I got there they said I missed my appointment which I was annoyed by but instead of being rude one of the workers asked what I was there for and then he looked at my car and asked me questions. In the end he said I was fine and didn’t charge me anything! Will continue to go back for services.

These guys are top notch and honest. I am a retired Mechanic and know when someone is trying to pad the bill. You will never find Straight Up Auto doing that. In fact they will go out of there way to help you with small items over the phone. I will always use them as my go to mechanic.

My wife’s mini van was making a grinding clunking noise. She was traveling to see me in another state I found this place online and sent her there. They were swamped with customers but were able to at least take a look at her van they understood her dilemma. After a half hour they found the problem and sent her on her way. Great family owned business honest work. They could’ve easily gotten us for some money but didn’t. An awesome place highly recommend

I had a time-sensitive freeon leak and they got me in same day I called to diagnose the location of the leak and ordered the condenser I needed and installed it the very next morning. Original quote was for 5-6 hours of labor and it only took 3.5 so they (without asking) adjusted the price instead of overcharging. Super pleased with this professional and friendly staff. For the sake of my vehicle, I hope I am not back too soon - but would call Straight Up Automotive in a heartbeat if I need any more maintenance on my vehicle in the future.

A+ Team at Straighten Up Auto Services. My 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee needed a new radiator fan last week. I got a quote from another auto repair shop in town (one located on Seminole Ct up 29). They had a crazy quote to do the work. I called Straighten Up. They were honest and told me what the part was, what they needed to mark it to and what labor was. New in the city. I have problem with my gear shift. Gear stick at park but needle remains on drive. They immediately know what the problem was. Since the car cant start, they followed me to car location, a 3 mile distance, started the car and brought it to workshop for repairs. A tow truck savings. I cant recommend Straight Up enough. I wish I had more friends with car troubles so I could tell them to go to Straight Up. Theyll fix your car, theyll do it right the first time, theyll give you a nation-wide warranty on the parts and labor (at least they have for everything Ive needed), and theyll charge you less than anyone else in town. They offer discounts for students, military, and first time customers, to sweeten the pot even more. Theyre honest, theyre hard working, they stand by their work, and above all, they wont let you waste your money on service you dont need. I mean, what more can I say? Oh -- the staff is wonderful as well. Elizabeth is a dear: the perfect mix of helpful, kind, and knowledgeable.

I cant say enough about Straight Up automotive.- The most honest and attentive staff.- Someone is always willing to get on the phone to explain (in layman terms) what is going on with your car, without trying to upsell.- Patient with all your questions.- They are super reasonable. I feel like they give you the same advice theyd give friends or family members.- One time, I came into the shop with my car shuddering. After a couple test drives, they werent able to replicate the problem so there was no charge.- Another time (when the shuddering came back) we did a test drive together to discover I had faulty spark plugs. Since they were the last shop to replace those spark plugs, they made that repair with no charge.- Dozens of other times they just simply diagnosed and fixed my car for a fair price and a reasonable turn around.I recently sold my lemon and cant wait for my next car to return to this shop (just hopefully not as frequently)!! Love these guys. They are very honest and open about what you do or do not need. Theyre not looking to upsell which I appreciate. The additional part warranty and free tow was a nice added bonus as well. They also will look at something for free and if they cant figure it out or nothing is wrong after all, dont charge. Just some good upstanding folks who deserve as much business as they can get.

The owner and staff are great folks! Unlike dealerships, they will only suggest work that needs to be done or should be done in the future. Costs are very reasonable (about 1/2 of the quote from the dealership). Knowledgeable about Honda vehicles.

My husband and I were coming back from DC to southern Virginia, when my car started making a loud continuous grinding noise. So he looked up the best rated mechanics near by. Such an amazing experience with them! I thought all hope was gone and that my car was going to be totaled (A different garage in Charlottesville had it for over two weeks and still couldnt tell me what was wrong, just that it wasnt worth fixing)....until I had it towed to Straight Up! They figured out what was wrong and had it fixed in less than two weeks. Not to mention how kind everyone is, including the owner Dave!! I highly recommend this shop and Im so glad I found them when I did!!!

Ive been here twice, and both times got straightforward service. This time I asked them to check my brake/transmission fluid, and see what was rattling under my car. They didnt charge me, told me what the rattling was, and basically they are great and Id trust them for anything, from oil changes to repairs.

I would not recommend this shop. We are new to town and since this shop had such good reviews we decided to have them repair some brake issues. We were charged almost $700 to have work done on rear brakes (which were just replaced in March) and said that we were good to go. Brakes were worse and dangerous so we took it to the local dealership (Nissan) and they said it was the front brakes that were the problem. Cost us another $450 to repair. When we discussed this with the owner of Straight Up, he suggested the dealership falsified records. Very disappointed and they have no integrity nor are they honest. STAY AWAY.

I came here after a terrible experience at University Tire on Main Street. Dave was very available, reliable, communicative, and helpful. His mechanics were extremely friendly. The focus there was on being helpful, fixing what needed fixing, but not going overboard. I felt like they were honest and cared about me. Thanks!!I wrote a review (above) for this place a few months back. Since then I have been back to them at least once a month. I have a really old vehicle that always has something needing fixing. I cant say enough good things about this place. The other day my headlights went out when I was out of state (WV). I left the vehicle at a garage in WV, all day, and they had no idea what to do. I took it to Straight up today and it was fixed in 2 hours for $100. There was something wrong with the front light grounding. Anyway- this is common for me... where they are able to fix things easily that other garages couldnt. For example, my car overheated for years (3 mechanics looked at it) until Straight up looked at it and fixed the fan clutch.

Dave was great. I came without an appointment because my air conditioning wasnt working. He said it was a common problem with a relay, so he replaced it. He offered only to charge me for the part if I became a customer, which I happily agreed to.

The five star reviews on this place are suspect at best. I recently had my car break down and had it towed to straight up automotive. The Tuesday I had it towed in I informed them of the issues and left. That Friday I had still not received word on what was wrong with my vehicle so I called in to check on it. The lady at the front desk informed me my head gaskets had blown and would go get the mechanic. She comes back to the phone to inform me they still had not even begun to work on the vehicle. Awesome. Great job so far. The following tuesday I received a call saying I had a leaking hose and it would need to be replaced, ok no big deal. By that next Thursday,this is 16 days later, I still had no idea what was wrong with my vehicle. Curious I took an Uber to straight up automotive. When I walked through the front door the head mechanic that was in charge of working on my vehicle was in the lobby watching television. When he saw me he had no idea who I was until I asked about my vehicle. He quickly said my head gaskets were blown and went to the back. I ordered a tow truck for my vehicle to be taken to another shop because of the horrendous way I had been treated. They ended up charging me for a new hose and two coolant flushes and labor which totaled around 300 dollars for absolutely nothing. The kicker is when I had it towed they had lost my radiator cap and couldn’t find it and tried to blame me for having moved my car to be towed and the radiator cap was placed on my engine. The best part about all of this is the shop I had it towed too fixed the issue in 4 days. No head gasket problem at all. These are the facts not my opinions now you can decide if you want this kind of service.

Dave, Elizabeth, and the team have been WONDERFUL with helping me figure out what is wrong with my car. They have been very honest and helpful from the beginning.I went there a year ago for something with my AC and mentioned needing a new visor, he told me to youtube it and order it online, which speaks volumes of him, he could have charged me $100+ to do it.Because of my past experience with him and him being so honest and friendly, I knew I was going to go back there the next time I needed something. We have been working through a problem with my transmission, they were able to find a very reasonable used one, and replace it for a very fair price! While we are still working through my issues for another problem with my car, it is comforting knowing they do care and want to see that it is fixed. I recommend them to anyone and will be my go to guys for as long as I live in the Charlottesville area.Thank you thank you for being reliable, trusting, and caring, that is hard to find these days especially when it comes to working on your cars!

No upselling, I even asked for a tune up and they declined because it wasnt really needed yet

My car is 1999 Acura TL, the check engine light on and the car shake recently, I went to a car repair store, they didnt told me the real reason and said its a little problem but quoted $700 to tempt me doing a engine tune up. I dont trust them, so I bought an OBD reader to read the code and search the google to find the solve methods. but I failed eventually, I thought I am smart, but I am not smarter than the boss of this store, David soon found the problem and fixed it! it cost me only $255 in stead of $700. I am happy to recommend this store. by the way, the technician Matt is a very nice guy.
