We love The Mat! It is great for building the kids self confidence as well as great training! The staff is very knowledgeable and is able to work with all types of kids and their personalities. They make training fun and I am surprised how much both of mine (9&11) actually remember!! It’s not a “belt factory,” more of a way of life.I have started working out as a beginner in one of the adult classes- mixed in with long time trainees. They are willing to work with me just as much as they do with the long time clients.I highly recommend checking out The Mat for the whole family!!

This weekends class was awesome. First class like always. It’s amazing what the mind, body and spirit can learn working with great instructors with a passion for teaching. The place is ran smoothly combinding wonder instructors who listen to questions and really want to help you achieve success in learning. The owner Alec,is great, who takes time for a chat and you can tell he likes to see people happy, learning and training. Great vibe at this place. The paces of the classes are perfect in time, and you’re able to walk away with great knowledge after each session. Students and people who train with you have all been cool and fun to learn with. Everyone is very encouraging to one another. Awesome place to learn, train and receive wonderful instruction.

I began training martial arts roughly 2.5 years ago at The Mat. I started because I wanted to feel in control of my safety when out and about, but since then martial arts has become a lifestyle mentality. The teachers are very knowledgeable and enjoy sharing that knowledge with everyone. Doesnt matter if its your first day or ten-thousandth day or what level youre at. Theyre also great at meeting you at your training level and try to make it so everyone can work at their level during class. Another thing I love is how the teachers explain body mechanics on an individual basis which helps people understand how their body needs to move to execute a skill. There is not a, one right way mentality. The most frequent response youll get when you ask whether to do A or B is, it depends. Everyone is different, but were all on the same journey :-)

My children have been attending classes at The Mat for almost 2 years and Im approaching 10 months of off and on attendance of adult classes. While I have not attended other schools or been exposed to other child programs, I can say with 100% confidence that Alec and the instructors at The Mat offer what I feel is a near perfect blend of structured curriculum and ad-hoc situational instruction delivered with patience, joy/excitement and expertise that benefits the whole family not only in physical self defense but in mental approaches to day to day challenges and lifes circumstances. As others have stated this is not a belt factory for children or an aggressive / macho environment for adults, its more about personal growth, discipline, confidence and proper / appropriate response when less than ideal / potentially dangerous situations occur. As the students say after each class - do something each day that keep our minds, body and spirit strong.

I really did not know what to expect when my son (5 yrs old) mentioned he would like to take Karate classes. Seemed like a good thing for him all around, to learn about focus, following directions, being physically active, etc. Unlike my son, I do not expect him to come out of The Mat with Ninja skills, but rather to learn simple and effective reasoning and self defense skills he can utilize as he grows. Alec and Miranda have absolutely impressed me. The approach they take with their kids gozen karate curriculum is spot on with what I would like to see a 5/6 year old learning in a class like this. Its not a belt factory, not about how hard you can kick or punch, but the skills you can acquire to go through life with self confidence. I would highly recommend The Mat, especially for kids karate classes. The other classes look great as well, for adults and teens, but I have not partaken yet.

Alec is humble, patient, and knowledgeable. His instruction includes skills that make his students want to learn more. If every community had a passionate instructor like Alec, martial arts would be more than the gift it already is. Definitely visit The Mat.

I have trained in the Martial Arts for over 30 years, off and on, and have found a wonderful new home at The Mat. The staff are exceptional and bring a wide variety of skill and knowledge to class everyday. Whether you want to develop your skills in boxing, Krav Maga, MMA, weapons or whatever, there’s plenty to learn at The Mat. The sessions are difficult, informative, competitive, and, with the right amount of training, will save your hide in a real world encounter. Alec, the owner and chief instructor, is obviously exceedingly good, but is humble and always, I mean always, has time for his students. The other instructors are just as knowledgeable and fun to work with. BTW, I am just some old guy (but I do take my training seriously) and I have “no dog in this fight” by submitting this review. I get nothing out of it. I just want everyone to know that this is a serious place to train (even for the kiddos) and, as a long time practitioner of the fighting arts, The Mat is exactly what I need. —Christopher

Ive had my boys here for several months now and am considering joining myself. I like the approach of teaching the kids movements appropriate to their age and the discussion of why the movement is important.

I am a 15 year senior student of Krav Maga and have been with this studio since the beginning, with the original ownership. It remains a terrific place to learn self defense (Krav Maga) and get into better physical and mental shape. The owner and instructors really care about bringing value and success to the members, not to exercise their own egos as happens elsewhere. The members can train at their own pace with guidance thats specific to them. Just as importantly, the self defense you learn is multi-situationally based rather than just automatic curriculum based. That enables the students to really learn how to use their expertise in real world situations. No matter your age, how much or little experience, male or female or what shape youre in, the experts at The Mat deal with you individually and in groups so you really get the most value. They focus on both your physical and mental improvements. Id highly recommend the studio!
