I adopted 2 kittens from this place. I worked with Cyndi and she was helpful and kind. She loves her job and loved what she does. I am grateful to have met her as adopting a kitten had become challenging and difficult with other adoption agencies. My kittens came fully vaccinated, microchipped and spayed for a very reasonable price. They even went as far as checking out my kitten who hurt her paw after having her home for 2 days. I will only adopt from TJ O’Connor going forward, and I would highly recommend. Thank you

Had heard great things about these guys, and even worked with a local friend to send some of our strays in to them. All were adopted out–which is awesome. Our favorite stray went missing and turned up, obviously starving (she was basically skin & bones). Figured TJO could help her.Brought her down. The staff refused to look at her (literally) and wouldnt examine her. They spend more time trying to discredit me (saying no cats ever came in from my house, even though I can literally prove otherwise) and trying to convince me that there is no hope for this cat and it would be more humane to put her to sleep (because its getting cold outside) than to try and treat her and let her back out. When I wasnt buying any of that idiocy–they tried to coerce me into surrendering the cat to them with the promise that they would, take care of her after I left. AKA put her to sleep when I step out the door. That was back in December (2018).Im eternally grateful that they were such lazy humans; because of them, Spare Cat got to see Dr. Ricksgers (our regular vet) and is happy and healthy after being fed and receiving some antibiotics.Shes still mostly feral, but can absolutely live inside with humans with no problem (she just doesnt like being pet.), she uses her letterbox like a champ, she can go for her regular vet visits with no problem, and she even plays with her toy mouse at night (when she thinks no one is around.)The lesson here is: dont take any animals you DONT want put to sleep into TJO.

My wife and I live a couple hours away and had been faced with the task of relocating the two sisters. We tried friends and family and other shelters but had no luck. Thankfully T. J. OConnor took the babies and will hopefully have better luck relocating them. So thankful they were able to help in this time of need. Thank you so much!

First time I rate any organization with a 5-STAR. TJOC is the very first. Highly organized, protocols followed, hygienic, you take your adopted pet with more than basic vaccinations, flee and ticks first month included, spayed and neutered.Knowledgeable staff at TOC go over the clinical record with you. Explained in detailed and follow up how are you doing with your animal companion. You also can share your pictures and experience at thier Facebook page.Ive visited about 4 shelters in West Massachusetts. All of them desorganized barely hygienic, staff is rude.

Advice to everyone who pays their city tax & get your tags @ TJO. Carry all your proof of paper work of your pets & neutered/spayed records. TJO doesnt follow their own files on each pet. They will over charge you for tags, because they only go by what your vet puts on the certificate given to you for proof of vaccinations & rabies. This is a BIG Foul & failure on their workers & system. Why keep a system file, you dont go by, when you have proof right in your system.Didnt even get an apology from the lady who attended me, she sent someone else to do her job & aplogize. If its in your system, a customer should not go running around to get a paper fixed because of a minor typo.So sad that they will over charge you, instead of helping correct the issue. Now I know why volunteers complain & workers quit.

It is very well organized and ran by people who clearly care for the well being of the animals. It can get very busy and hectic soon after they open, specially during holidays or in summer, but they have a good system to get to everyone who signs up to see a particular animal. After you adopt you get as much information as there is available on the pet you are taking home. You get a one on one consult with one of the volunteers about the proper care for your pet and other instructions.

I have been to this shelter several times now during my trip to Massachusetts. This is the only shelter where the person working at the counter decides which cat you can and cannot adopt. It boggles my mind that you go in looking to rescue an animal needing a loving forever home, and you look at all of them behind glass windows, sometimes you feel a connection when the cat or kitten looks at you, nudges the wall, tries to pat at your fingertips- usually when you ask to see That cat you are denied or ignored and she will point you towards something different. She (Cindy) will also leave you in a room until closing with a cat for 30 minutes when you have requested to view a couple of different ones during your 2 hour visit, until you have literally run out of time to go through the adoption process. When I have adopted animals in the past, I have been able to view the Cat I REQUESTED to view, and not been denied because she thinks he wouldnt be a good fit for you.. frankly that is just ridiculous and NOT their job. I dont know if they do things differently up here in New England, but in my experience at shelters Anywhere else, they dont pick and choose for you whom youll be taking home. If the cat is healthy and adoptable, it should be up to you whether youre willing to take on whatever deep rooted psychological issues she thinks they may have in the 24 hours shes had the cats at the shelter.Unfortunately I had to take my business elsewhere after dealing with this woman, and have since purchased two cats from a breeder for $1000 that I would have gladly donated to the shelter had I been able to adopt the one that I wanted for our family. Lastly- they need to STOP advertising that each cat is worried or shy on their ads, or needs a home that is quiet or adult friendly only as I finally got to spend time with TWO cats there after speaking with a different representative, and both cats did wonderfully with my toddler, and my children ages 7 & 9. People in management that think their title is a license to control peoples actions should not be in their position.

But these are all volunteers that do the best they can. Theyre under staffed certainly. Not evey animal on display is ready for adoption. Every stray and abandoned animal from area towns ends up there as well as the ones that are rescued from horrible situations.I been blessed with great joy from the animals that I have adopted from here. They were well worth the inconvenience. If you want to save an animal come here first. If customer service is your priority then go somewhere that has a paid staff.

They wanted us to either do a 10 day quarantine at home or they can quarantine the dog themselves and it would be $400! I never in my life had this much rage over anything! I called Dakin and they were glad to help only they cannot transfer the dog. I called Thomas J. O’Connor again and explained the situation and they literally told me they were gonna back out and since we’re not bringing the dog to them and bring him to Dakin they would not work with us! Went in to see a dog my mom had fallen in love with. Waited forever, which I understand because volunteering and whatnot, but the individual who set me up with the dog didnt even check to see if he was on hold for adoption. I found out when I left the room and a different worker who overheard finally asked me, Is your mom the one who has the hold on him? ... Okay. Small mistake. Well, rather big mistake but one thats easy to make. But then to call and just find out if that other family picked him up.... I called eight times and left two voicemails. Between their uncomfortable wait times (As they like to call it) and their ridiculous hours... Im just going to head to another shelter.

I adopted a dog here 6 yrs ago. They let me foster him for a weekend before adopting. He had been given up by his owners but Thomas J had him up to date on shots and had him there for quite some time. They are so dedicated to finding animals a good home. They spend time every day taking all the dogs outside, getting them walked, groomed and fed, even teaching basic training commands. They keep the whole building very clean.Recently my 11 month old blue pit bull got taken to Thomas J because he got loose and thankfully someone found him and turned him in to Animal Control. I was 3 hours away and my dogs were home with a friend. He had not been microchipped yet (he was done that week), and his name tag only fit a collar being delivered the next day, so he only had his vet rabies tag on. I immediately reported my baby missing on their answering machine. They check their messages every 10 mins or so, and within 10 minutes Dan from animal control called me back to let me know they had located him. It was such a relief! Dan loves pit bulls also and even sent me a pic of my baby in jail so I knew it was in fact him safe and sound. Everyone I have dealt with at Thomas J, and now animal control, is very kind, knowledgable and dedicated to finding these animals a great home. Although you have to pay for adoption, its to cover their vet costs, spay/neuter if needed, and boarding costs. They have toys and blankets for all the animals and they all have a good sized space in which to stay. You can get your dogs city license here and they offer spay/neuter services. I also had to pay to get my baby out of jail, but I wouldve been happy to make a donation otherwise. He was found after hours Thursday and they didnt open until Saturday, so they fed and housed him there. They went over all the fees and verified that I was my babys owner and kindly gave him back. Without everyone at Thomas J, Dan from animal control, and the person who turned him in that Thursday night 4/19, I might not have my baby back right now. Thank you all so much!! You have no idea!
