I must hand it to Dave and Hawthorne Cutlery. We went there prepared to spend money on what he had and he sent us away with advice to pick up what he didnt have (currently) in stock. He listened to exactly what we wanted and recommended the best solution even to the expense of his sale.Dave is a wealth of knowledge about blades and steel but almost as importantly, he is a hoot. Incomparable local staple for all things edged. I have bought everything from a hunting knife to a shaving razor to a meat cleaver over the years and everything was a fair price and great quality. Sharpening services for knives are fast and masterful. Stopped in today to ask about sword sharpening, and got a community referral in a heartbeat. The proprietor is knowledgable and gregarious. If you need a sharp object, or a dull object made sharp, this is where you need to go.

This place is awesome. The owner is a super cool cat and very knowledgeable and helpful. Easy place to spend a lot of money on a lot of cool things. Prices are very fair too, I bought a great set of Wusthof steak knives. This is the only local store that carried them and for the same discounted price as Amazon, Macys, and Sears. A very good selection of knives of all sorts, supplies, a few antique blades, and sharpening services. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful. The goods are varied. The owners sense of humor is not for everyone.

Came in with a general idea of what I needed and was educated and fulfilled on leaving. Customer service was top notch and real, no fake bs here. Selection of knives was broad and there were some awesome things in there as well.

Like sharpening a all ready sharp knife. That and love your responses to the low starred reviews lol. One shouldnt expect friendly customer service or non-opinionated staff from a knife shop, and Hawthorne Cutlery is no exception. What they do have is a great selection of new and used blades from safety razors to swords, and a very skilled knife sharpener who will charge $5 per blade for a good edge. I bought a big survival knife from these guys and have had my kitchen equipment sharpened by them several times.

I recently purchased an awesome, swanky, fancy-donkey (I would say fancy-ASS, but thats vulgar...which is why I choose to use the suffix -donkey in lieu of ass) 300 dollar folding knife of very premium steel. I felt that -out of the box- the knife was merely adequately-sharp but not razor-sharp -which is how I expect new knives to be, especially expensive knives.About a week ago I brought my knife in to Hawthorne Cutlery to see if they would sharpen my new knife. They indicated to me they would sharpen it and told me to come back later that day to pick the knife up. When I returned later that day, however, they told me that the knife was ALREADY razor sharp...hence they had no ability or desire to try and make the knife any sharper than it already was. I was a little disappointed and irked because I felt like the knife...somehow wasnt as sharp as it could and should be.A couple days ago I attempted to get a second opinion by bringing my knife into the Portland Knife House. The sharpener from this store took a look at it and immediately felt that the knife could be somewhat sharper. Mind you, the knife has a premium steel and is recurved which means sharpening my knife is UBER-difficult anyways -it would take an expert to do so.I very recently returned to Portland Knife House and picked up the knife. They did sharpen it and did an absolutely professional AWESOME job. Obviously they have a keener eye and are more legit than Hawthorne Cutlery -given that they felt the knife could be sharper and did an impeccable and immaculate job on it.

The owner supports violence against pedestrians and people who ride bikes. Probably best to stay away from the crazy man with sharp objects.edit to reply to owner: Im glad you think its funny. I have had two friends killed by people driving cars, I have been hit, my wife has been hit. Its not funny. I hope you never have to go through it, and I hope someday you have the maturity to recognize the seriousness of words, regardless of intent. Either way, Ill certainly never shop at your store.

David is an exceptionally knowledgeable business owner knows the answers to your questions and takes the time to give them to you. Hes also an awesome guy to talk with on a variety of subjects. A true individual. I never worry about scraping bits off my cutting board with my kitchen knife, cuz I know I can get it SHARP down on Hawthorne anytime.

Awesome knife sharpening, bought a nice boning knife when I was there, been very happy with it. Need a new serrated edge knife, so be back by soon.

When they are open its great but google says they are open until 5 on Sunday, and I showed up at 4:23. There sighns says open Sunday hours 4 maybe 5. I called him and he said open until 5. So I just drove 26 miles for no reason.

I have not yet physically visited the store in Portland, but was impressed by the way the owner handled his very few negative criticisms. Owner appears to be well informed.

Due to short supply of knife stores in the area as of late, we stumbled across this place. Drove across town to view their selection of Spydercos. Not a huge selection, but we found something absolutely perfect in their stock. Spent more than we would have liked, but I cannot tell you how happy I am with this Spyderco Dice model. Perfect size, 3 efficient ways to deploy the blade.On top of that, we got an excellent deal on it, despite it being more than we had planned to spend. The gentleman helping us didnt pressure us, nor was he otherwise pushy or eager for a sale. He knew I wanted this knife, and he negotiated the price for me so that it was feasible for us.After getting home, we researched this particular model and found that it retails for over $300 on the Spyderco site! We paid a good $50 less.Thank you Hawthorne Cutlery. If you ever get some Domino models in, my husband would love one of those! :) Will definitely return. Apparently they have excellent knife sharpening services at $5, regardless of size. Cant beat that.

I came to this shop 2 X-mas ago and picked out some awesome Lamson Sharp (sp?) knives for my husband and I to gift each other. It was a great experience and I have hardly had to sharpen my knives, which I use a lot. I LOVE the owners review of the yayhoo that gave him a crappy review for not being open when they thought they would be. My husband and I will be heading down tomorrow with his 14 year-old grandson in tow who is visiting from Texarkana, TX and he has a total knife fettish!! Ill call to make sure that you all will be open at 11 like the site says!
