The tuning process is extremely complicated, it is an art form, this is not an anyone can do it situation. This was our first experience with Artisan tuning our 45-year-old Steinway grand piano. Setting up the appointment was easy and an email confirmation with specifics was handy. Our piano had not been tuned for quite a few years. Im so glad I was referred to Artisan Piano Services! The technician arrived as scheduled and explained carefully what he would be doing. He even adjusted the pedals, which surprised me that it was a correctable problem! He toned down the brightness of the sound and explained that he would be happy to return to make further adjustments if we wanted a mellower sound. I was lucky enough to have Artisan Piano come give my 1926 Baldwin a recondition. They cleaned the instrument, refurbished the hammers, repaired the keys and regulated the action, fixed the pedals and tuned it twice. It was a pleasure to have such fine workmanship done on a family instrument.

Just acquired a 1957 piano, hasnt been tuned or played in a decade or more.. Ben came out (right on time), got right down to working on it. Ben had provided my first (free) tuning after I purchased from Classic Pianos, so I knew that he was competent, courteous, friendly, and punctual when he came again two years later. We have a very, very old upright piano. Evidently it was played in the Oregon theatre. Anywho, Ben recently came out and tuned her. Since my seven year old started taking piano lessons we’ve been taking better care of her. Or him? Who am i to say. Ben was wonderful. Personable, intelligent, and plays the piano beautifully. That’s my favorite part of having my piano tuned by the way. I know my piano is in amazing hands anytime any of Artisans piano technicians come out.

Ben did a great job in tuning the piano. He was thorough, professional, and quick. He did offer advice and quotes for improving the piano performance but was not intrusive or pushy in suggesting the additional services. I would recommend this company and their technicians. I have been using Artisan for about 2 years. The technicians have been extremely knowledgeable, on time, friendly. The technician on the most recent tuning suggested I consider doing a hammer repair which I would never have known about. I also found out that Artisan does appraisals on pianos so requested an appraisal which is being done. I like that they send postcards routinely to remind me to schedule a tuning.

Great service. Hadn’t had our piano tuned in >10 years and a hammer had broken off so needed a key repaired. I used to have a tuner that was a family friend and also a wonderful tuner, but when he passed away I was at a loss to where to go to find another tuner. Artisan has been a wonderful experience. I work for the Cannon Beach Christian Conference Center and we have 7 pianos that we maintain. 5 of the 7 get regular use, 3 of those 5 get constant use. When our piano tuner passed away all of his accounts were passed to Artisan. We were given the choice to stay with them or find someone else. I am so grateful we chose Artisan. They are professional, they are personable, and they are thorough. Ben Wasson is our technician and he has always provided excellent service. He tunes 4 pianos every time he comes and has performed some very necessary repair/maintenance to our main Chapel piano. All of our pianists, who have been coming for a number of years, commented on how fantastic the piano is now in every way. It plays better, it sounds better, and its a lot easier for me to get a good micd tone out of it. One of our pianists even asked me for Artisans info because they needed some work done on their piano, which Artisan performed magnificently. They are incredibly happy. I had some concerns about how a rebuild would turn out but any worries were unfounded. Our small grand piano had lived in Iowa for 2 years, where there are huge changes in indoor humidity from summer to winter--not good for pianos. It then suffered a 2000 mile move to Oregon in 2011 and hadnt been serviced since.David cleaned it and tuned it very appropriately for this situation. He then removed the keyboard with the hammers (known as the action) and brought it to his shop for renovation of all the felts and adjustment of the hammers. He returned the action a few days later, carefully reinstalled it, adjusted the pedals, and refined the tuning. It hadnt sounded better in years!2 months later, I got a customer service follow-up call from his office, checking on my satisfaction level, which was very high; however, when further pressed, I told them that the pedal adjustment wasnt quite right and that the piano had gradually begun to sound harsh.I thought the pedals should be re-tweaked, although I said that could wait until the next scheduled tuning visit in July. I also thought the out-of-tune sound was understandable given what the piano had previously experienced. I didnt think the January tuning was to blame; I just hadnt intended to pay for tuning again any earlier than planned because of budget limitations.The office said they definitely wanted to make it right. Sure enough, David returned yesterday (March 26), fixed the pedal and corrected the tuning sufficient to restore a good sound. We agreed to have regular servicing again in July, as is appropriate for a piano in this condition.David is a highly skilled piano technician--maybe piano clinician would be a better term, since he provides diagnosis and treatment of a very high order. His company, however, makes customer service such a priority, its almost embarrassing to ask for anything at all!Please note that I previously posted this review on Angies List (R), where I rated this company A, the highest grade.

Artisan, and particular senior technician David Hayes, are great. Friendly, flexible, reponsive, and, most especially, expert and efficient. Always willing to discuss the technical aspects of maintaining a piano in top condition, in plain language. Each time Ive had my Estonia L-190 serviced, its sounded great. Bought the piano new and there were a few sticky damper issues at first, which David quickly and permanently fixedd. All around solid five stars, couldnt ask for more.

Ben came and serviced our 30 yr old upright Yamah piano which hadnt been tuned in probably over 20+ yrs despite being moved across various states lines. My wife felt he was incredibly personable, knowledgable, and kind. I have had a very positive experience with Artisan Piano Services. The office staff was always prompt with scheduling and e-mailing accurate estimates and provided reminder calls for work to be done. The technicians (Michael and especially Ryan) are very courteous and handled my curious nature by explaining the inner workings of the piano. My upright piano is a family heirloom and had not been cared for or tuned for 60-70 years. I was given several repair options so that I could choose the one that suited my budget. Each technician (I have had 3 visits thus far) gave me a call with their expected arrival time and were on my doorstep exactly at the time I had been given. The time to complete the work was accurate each time as well. The work that I have had done thus far includes 2 tunings, application of new keytops, resurfacing of the hammers, full regulation, and new bridal straps. I highly recommend this company. We had our 1st piano tuned twice by Artisan, and it was a pleasure having knowledgeable, experienced and very nice technicians do the work. The second tuning made the piano sound so good we could hardly believe our ears. They are responsive to any and every little issue presented to them, and are able to identify and fix whatever the problem is. We have since upgraded to a new piano that is now due for its first tuning. We are looking forward to it and would not consider anyone but Artisan to do it.

I recently shipped my 1953 Steinway M to Portland from Spokane. I was concerned about the condition since it had been in storage for 3 years. Artisan came out after it had settled in for about a month and tuned it beautifully. It had gone almost 1/4 tone sharp! Gave it a good cleaning and examination and fortunately found it in good shape. They were on time and did an excellent job . Look forward to next tuning and possible voicing. Highly recommend this company. Very happy with their work

I have a 9 Estonia Concert Grand. Artisan put new Renner Blue Point hammers and shanks on the piano, and voiced, tuned and regulated. The final product is wonderful! The balance between voicing to retain power but avoiding a harsh tone was beautifully reached and the action just flows in such a smooth fashion. Great response for soft playing, too. My piano was in need of a tuning before the arrival of a Japanese exchange student who loves to play the piano. I would have been embarrassed to have her sit at the piano because of being so off-key! My experience with Artisan Piano Services was outstanding. I got an appointment right away and the technician arrived on schedule. He was extremely courteous,even taking his shoes off before stepping on my hardwood floors! He did a wonderful job and was helpful in diagnosing potential future problems on my 60 year old piano that hadnt been tuned in years. He offered to come out and make adjustments for free if particular keys went out of tune again right away. Ill definitely continue to use Artisan Piano Services.

I picked Artisan Piano Services to tune my piano based on Angies List so I had an idea about what to expect. I was not disappointed. From my first encounter over the telephone to waving goodby to Joseph after he finished with my piano the service was professional, respectful and friendly and the technical skills of the highest caliber. Let me tell you about Joseph, my technician. Actually, he was more of an artist than a technician, although he did an excellent job of finely tuning my old piano. There was a broken piece in the piano which Joseph was able to fix, adjusting his schedule to accommodate this hitch in the plan. And, finally, when he was finished with the tuning he quietly sat down and played the most beautiful piece of music. I asked him if he would mind playing another piece and he graciously obliged. I was moved to tears. I told Joseph that I had never heard such sweet sound from that piano. Artisan Piano Services were above and beyond expectations.

I moved to Portland two years ago from Florida with my Kawai vertical piano. Artisan Piano Services and David Hayes were recommended to me by the folks at Classic Pianos and Im glad they did. Im a music teacher so my piano gets a lot of use. I record with it as well. David has provided excellent service, making extra visits in between full tunings to address certain areas of the instrument that needed an adjustment. Hes given me suggestions on how to keep the environment around my piano more stable which will help prolong the life of the instrument. David is always on time and very easy to work with. He also offers me a special teachers rate and reciprocal referrals, which I greatly appreciate. I highly recommend David Hayes and Artisan Piano Services.

Excellent piano tuning service; it was very easy to schedule and appointment and the technician was skilled, timely and friendly. The price was a little high but not excessive.

The techs at Artisan Piano Services are AMAZING!!!!! They have been to my home twice. Both times they called twenty minutes before they arrived to tell me they were on their way and both times they were on time (i.e., at the very beginning of the time window I had been given). However, what makes them so incredible is their work. I initially had them out to tune my piano and do, what I thought, was a minor repair. They tuned my piano beautifully, but because of the age of my piano, the repair was potentially major. They sent Michael out to see if he could figure out how to repair my non-repeating keys. He fixed the problem in less than half an hour and did not charge me. Who does that? Um, Artisan Piano Services. I love them and will never have any one else out to service my piano needs.

We had such a wonderful experience! Not only was Dave super knowledgeable about the inner workings of our Piano, we discovered it was built in 1923. She has never sounded more in tune!We really appreciate all the staff at Artisan Piano!

I am so impressed with the caliber of professionalism and impeccable service provided by Michael, one of the technicians, who tuned our recently moved Steinway Grand and Baldwin from the bay area to Canby, OR. I had no clue who to call and saw Artisan Piano Services website. I thought it might be difficult to get my pianos tuned before our family arrived for the holidays, but called and there was an opening the next day. I was contacted by Michael before the service confirming the appointment and ETA. He was prompt and very punctual. Michael performed a thorough tuning plus a minor repair at the same rate of the initial quoted fee. Not only was the service great and reasonable, Michael is someone who I would not hesitate calling for future service and recommend to anyone. Had a tuning from Ben Wasson, a fine, knowledgable and enthusiastic technician. Did a lovely tuning in record time on my new Yamaha U1 from Classic Pianos, and was more than happy to give me (a 1-4 hour-a-day player and piano teacher) some suggestions regarding the regulation and fine-tuning of the instrument for the future. From set-up to send-off the service was smooth and pleasant; will definitely be using Artisan again.

David came to our house to fix one of the pedals on our piano. He was very professional and because the repair was so simple, he didnt charge us for the visit. I will definitely use them again when our piano needs tuning.

Artisan Piano Services offers great service and quality work. I am a violin/piano/voice teacher who relies on my piano (a Yamaha YUS5 professional upright purchased new in 2010) for lessons 4 days per week. I like how their secretary always answers when I call during business hours, and how they can offer tunings at a time that works with my busy schedule. I would highly recommend them for tuning, repairs, or restoration.
