I am an entrepreneur in Portland and I was looking to rent commercial space with the Fine Arts Building. In asking Andrew Smith (the contact for commercial real estate for the building) about the spaces accessibility I learned a lot about the viewpoints of this business and I feel that it is important that Portland knows about this commercial real estates discriminatory orientation towards marginalized groups. I am not saying anything about the businesses that reside in this building, as I have never had contact with them, just the lessor. Here are a few snippets from our email exchange:Andrew writes: No, we are not ADA compliant. As our building was constructed before July 1992, we are not required to have ADA restrooms. Fine Arts Building is a historic building, 112 years of age, and does not have the physical capacity for any upgrade to its restrooms. Our restrooms are too small to accommodate wheelchairs. As a professional office building, and for the natural safety and privacy of our tenants and guests, we are proud to offer gender specific designated, male or female only, non-unisex restrooms.I hope you draw your own conclusion about these statements, however I found this response to be disheartening, to say the least, because the email implies that this lessor believes having inclusive restrooms would make the building unprofessional, unsafe and not private, as if people who benefit from inclusive bathrooms are inherently unprofessional and are predators or something. This is problematic thinking at its core. I think all people need safe places to use the bathroom, no matter who they are - male, female, or otherwise, in wheelchairs, or not. And certainly, gender and your ability to walk does not dictate your professionalism. When I pointed out that these statements were unfortunate and discriminatory I received an email back stating that he had no interest in my snowflake politics. Maybe you dont have interest in them either, but in my experience of Portland, this city prides itself on being a sanctuary for marginalized people. Its time a cultural commodity like the Fine Arts Building aligned with that spirit.Good luck Andrew Smith... I hope you create safe places for more people than solely non-wheelchair bound, cisgendered men and women in the near future. You could really make a difference in this world if you gave diversity a chance...

Possibly the rudest small minded stuck upbuildings manager in existence. If you like to be condemned and judged you should definitely rent a space here. I cant believe people like this still exsist. Speechless. Explains why half their spaces became available all at once.

Historic building that was originally a hotel, now it is small businesses such as massage therapists and counselors. No public restrooms.
