Called the shop, the owner picked up, he seemed very nice and optimistic about my problem, left me feeling great, I specifically asked the words how much money am I looking at for a diagnosis? He told me just come in hed charge $60-$70 initially, open up my computer and see whats wrong, should take about an hour. Talk about misleading thats just their hourly labor cost. Made an appointment, I was thinking wow an appointment how fancy! My impression was I bring it in he opens it up for an hour while I go walk around town or something. So I brought it in, and come to find out he wasnt even going to be the one working on it, and I had to wait 4 business days plus the weekend for another person to get around to my machine but whatever I figured Im in good hands no huge rush. Then this person calls me and tells me they finally opened up the machine, looked at the top of my motherboard, and cant figure out whats wrong yet. They need another $70 to flip the motherboard over and check the bottom and that its probably just a waste of time to even continue maybe I should just consider data recovery... Like wow thats a bit of a 180 in attitude from my original phone call. How in the world did it take an hour to unscrew the chassis and look at just the top of my motherboard and some of the main components?? Mind you Ive seen a guy on youtube open up this exact model check both sides of the motherboard for electrical shorts and he even replaced a capacitor and fixed that persons specific issue while adjusting his camera and explaining every step of the way in approximately 45 minutes. I have no problem paying hundreds of dollars for replacement parts and labor but Im not dropping $140 with zero understanding of anything thats going on yet. Feels like maybe theyre just used to milking labor for minimal effort dealing with average customers that dont know anything about hardware. Anyways I feel like an idiot for going there as soon as I got my machine back I called two other places that will diagnose the problem for free with no appointment just drop off. One guy at a place with a 140+ review perfect 5 star rating said hell even take a look while Im actually there still in his building.

Pete installed a new fan on my work laptop and explained the process as he took it apart. Not being a hardware girl, I appreciated that. He ordered the part the day I called to schedule an appointment and was able to install it three business days later. No overcharging for service and very considerate and professional. Highly recommend.

If you want your computer fixed somewhere by sweet, professional people that’ll charge you a more-than-fair price, this is the place for you!! Bailey was so kind, communicative, and patient. The necessary part for my older laptop was extraordinarily hard to find. Bailey, however, was dedicated enough to help me that she dug around for the part over the course of a few months, and she always kept me updated as to how the search was going. Even though the part ultimately served to be unobtainable, I was given good recommendations for the next steps I should take. Definitely will come back here for any future computer trouble!

Unfortunately they weren’t able to save my computer (to no fault of their own!) but they were super responsive, affordable, and talked me through the diagnostic process and explained what was wrong well enough that my computer-illiterate self could understand.

Edited to add: I do appreciate the response and the willingness to comp the repair. And I understand the realities of being a small business and how things can sometimes fall through the cracks. But I am still bummed that a rush wasnt put on this project after the first mistake (the failure to complete a diagnosis) and I am also bummed that it took a parent getting involved and writing a critical review to get a satisfactory customer service response. When my teenage daughter was taking the lead, politely and consistently following up, the response to her was lackluster.***My daughter spilled water on her computer and the track pad stopped working. She found this place (probably impressed by the reviews) and made an appointment late in August. They were friendly and responsive at first, but after roughly two weeks with no word she called and found out that someone had started the diagnostics and then... never finished it, so it had been sitting on the shelf, forgotten for a while. They apologized and began work, but between her having to call and text every week and them needing to order a part from England that took a long time to arrive (which could have gotten here sooner if they actually finished the diagnostics) it has been there more than a month and she had to leave for college without it. This gets two stars instead of one because they offered us $15 off from the cost of labor and always were polite, but I feel that $15 off isnt enough for holding the computer hostage for 5 weeks and continually forgetting about it until reminded by their 18-year-old customer. I may update this when we see if the computer actually works after the repair.

I took my unresponsive Mac to Bolt and Peter was able to find and fix the issue (corrosion due to liquid spill) during my appointment. He was super communicative and walked me through every step of the process. I will not hesitate to return to Bolt with future computer needs.

So, I just dropped off my busted laptop at bolt computers. The place is small, but the staff was friendly and helpful. It was packed full of both computers to fix and a bunch of Lego models. The very best kind of weird! Felt very at home in downtown Portland. Especially during the Covid outbreak, they sanitized the sitting space and limited customers to keep social distancing in good practice. So far, the staff has been very kind and they were straight forward with the shape of my equipment. I was given a quote for the work involved and it was comparable and reasonable. I will write another review when I pick up my hopefully fixed laptop.

I dropped by the shop and talked with Chris about a used GPU I bought and was having issues with. Turns out the card is probably a dud, but Chris showed me how he diagnosed it and pointed out some odd things about the card that should help me get a refund. He didnt even charge for his time. Super great service. I run a PC build on a msi board, it didnt start after I installed a few new updates to the build and I was puzzled. Bolt Computer Services is by far one of the best companies I have had the pleasure of working with! I am a fellow tech geek and mechanical engineering student at Portland State University. I had purchased a new laptop and needed to make some serious hardware upgrades to make it funcional for the type of work that I do. I have done similar upgrades to my personal computers in the past but not to this caliber. Needless to say I did attempt at first but quickly realized it surpassed my own knowledge. There services was incredible, not only did they solve a complex multi layered software problem, they took the time to go the extra mile and repair more then one hardware issue that had been plaguing me for years. My problems were solved quickly and easily, and my computer is working better then ever.

Bolt advertises being a neighbor, and Peter IS our neighbor. He salvaged data from a notebook hard disk that we figured was gone forever (spoiler: he put the disk in his freezer for days, then absconded with the data before the disk knew what hit it). After that he recommended a replacement laptop and helped us set it up. After THAT, he pumped up the RAM on our desktop machine -- all with good cheer and well wishes. Hed be a perfect doctor, with the cheerful housecalls and all, but were glad hes a geek.

Had a high-end gaming PC start randomly rebooting during games. Peter went over my system meticulously to resolve the issue. Not to be cliché, but my computer is running like new.My computer was acting wonky for over a year and I did my best to research and apply how to keep it running well, but it kept getting slower, especially on boot up. I finally decided to get professional help.Bolt was awesome. They discovered I had a faulty drive, which is what was causing the issue. Apparently the drive was so bad, that it was on the brink of failing entirely, which could have resulted in lost data. They were able to hook up a new drive, and do a general OS tuneup.The computer is running great! I forgot how nice it is to have a fast computer. This service has saved me from buying a new one.

Not exactly corporate So when my computer crashed, I decided to give these guys a try. The cause of my crash was quickly identified, fixed on the spot. Recently returned from a trip to New York. Not sure if the computer was dropped or if they fiddled with it at airport security, regardless the computer was crashing immediately thereafter. A quick call to Bolt informed me the hard drive was dying and to shut if down right away if I cared about preserving my data. As this was my work laptop, I complied and headed over to visit Peter at Bolt right away. He assured me everything would be done to first preserve my most important data and then to clone or image the drive and mount it onto a new one. I went there with my macbook after a visit to simplyMac where they told theyd charge me at least $300 to repair my computer(apparently the charging port was broken) . Peter the owner was extremely helpful in helping me figuring out what was wrong with my mac, he cleaned the charging port, fiddled with the command a little bit and there you go my computer was on again. He was great at explaining the issue my computer had since it had no battery & advised me to buy an authentic Apple battery instead of the trade off ones on eBay/Amazon. I cant praise this place enough! Peter worked wonders on my liquid-damaged MacBook Pro. I brought my laptop in thinking I needed a new DC jack, but Peter determined that I only needed a new charger. He didnt even charge me for the diagnostic! I offered to buy a charger from him, but he said you should buy a higher amp charger on Amazon. Then he give me instructions on how to identify the right charger (cuz there is a lot of cheap junk that doesnt fit Asus). I didnt feel comfortable getting all this awesome service for free, so we settled on me just leaving a review on Google. So here it is! You rock dudes!

Went in after calling on the phone to see if I could just get a Mac OS high Sierra simply installed on my MacBook. I had the computer ready and all I needed was to plug in the USB and install it. I explicitly stated over the phone that I would dish them a “couple “ of bucks for a something that would cost them virtually nothing but 5 minutes of their time. All they had to do was stick in a USB.When I came in, he told me it will be $15 , which is a price that made me balk. He did not mention this over the phone when I told him I’d dish him a couple of dollars. Apple offered to do it for free. I told them that I thought this service was free since it was effortless and did not cost him anyways and that he didn’t even mention a cost over the phone. I also told him that I was planning to tip $7 anyways , so if we can make the price $7 and call it good. He told me I can go somewhere else in a extremely rude way.Great way to lose a customer. It would Literally would have taken him 3-5 minutes of his time and all he had to do was plug in a usb for the operating system to download. This lets me know that he is either struggling for money which means you are getting low quality service , or that money and not quality customer care is all they care about. Go somewhere else when you need repairs done. Someplace that actually values you as a customer and not just your wallet. This is not how you get repeat customers and build a loyal customer base.

Bolt Computers was a real life saver for me. They do a free system diagnosis and give very reasonable rates. When my old laptop broke down, they went out of their way to research how I could find an ideal replacement for discount price! These guys are awesome.

Used them twice—once for a cracked screen and again for a difficult to diagnose ram problem. Very tech savvy staff. Price more than fair. An order of magnitude better than a big-box store repair shop.

For several years now, Bolt Computer Services has been there for virus removal, data recovery, and other tricky jobs that I dont have time for or would rather not get involved with. Theyve always done a thorough job at a good price and Im sure Ill be using them for years to come.

My first time working with Peter was excellent. The second time was the worst customer experience ever. I believe that people can have off days and transactions that arent ideal--we have all been there. However keeping my computer for over 8 months when I have tried to get it back, telling me parts are coming in when they arent, and not picking up numerous phone calls and not being in the shop when your secretary says you will be, is inexcusable. I could have my computer fixed multiple times over in this period of time and I wish there would have been just some honest communication in this period so I could have done so.In the end, not only did he not fix the problem (a simple battery replacement) but he didnt offer any sentiment to try and keep me a customer in the future. I will give it to him that he admitted that he straight up forgot about me, but I hoped he would be more apologetic for such a weirdly awful experience it was. I hated this happened and that Peter was all of a sudden not the business owner that I knew him to be before hand. I definitely wont be back and it seems like he doesnt care about that either.

Doesnt pick up the phone. Doors arent open during the posted hours. How great can they possibly be with service like that?

In Portland for OSCON and what happens? My laptop crashes! Thankfully, Peter at Bolt Computers was super helpful. When I called, he tells me me to come in right away and they give me top priority. Thank you Peter.

I spoke to a friendly rep over the weekend about getting my laptop repaired. He said that they were closed on the weekends but that I could bring in my computer between 10am and 6pm on Monday - preferably between 11am and 1pm so that he has enough time to diagnose the problem. I showed up at 12:30pm and found the door locked. When I called the phone number, no one picked up. After waiting half an hour, I left. Very frustrating.

Technology and the fluid motion of maintaining every resource in an IT department is the lifeblood of my job. When the unexpected server crash happens, it is important to know what to do or where to turn. This was the beginning of my discovery of the greatest support and company I have ever done business with. I am still fresh to the Portland area and run an IT department for a non-profit in the area. This past week we had a server go down, and after exhausting all of my resources and tools available (which was minimal), it was time to turn to outside help.With being in a non-profit, the expense sometimes comes first. So my first step was to reach out and find the best and “cheapest” computer/server support companies in the area. I called several places finding the best quote and quickest response. My first experience was with a local “computer repair” shop (I would rather not give the name here) and they said they could do same-day repair and have me back online in no time. 7 hours later I finally got ahold of them to find out “nothing could be done” after they said it could be. The repair cost a few hundred dollars and nothing was done whatsoever. I was at a stalemate. The agency needed to get the data online, as the end-of-year was approaching, I had already spent way too much with no resolution, and then my phone rang. It was the best phone call I could have gotten at this time. Peter, from Bolt Computers (a company I had called and almost taken the server to) called to see what the status was and if the server was ok. I let him know what the issue was, and Bolt got to work. Literally. He offered to drive, several miles, after working hours to the so called “computer repair” shop and actually pickup my server. Yes. Peter drove out of his way to get the job done. What took this horrible “computer repair” shop to do (and not even accomplish anything) took Bolt just a few hours to take care of. The next day my server was online, data was cloned, and I was in business.This is an extremely rare occurrence in society today. A company that goes beyond what it should, to take care of the little guy. Bolt Computers is the best place in Portland, if not the Pacific Northwest, to take any and all IT, or computer related issues too. I frankly refuse to trust anyone else.Thanks Peter, I truly appreciate you as an individual and appreciate the awesome company you have built.
