Johnny does great haircuts and will keep the conversation up the whole time. Good prices, good service, and good beers while you wait. He does appointments most of the day, but if you get there before walk-ins start (3:30p) you can put your hat in line and grab a slice from Flying Pie two doors down.

Great old fashioned barber shop. Johnny has been there for decades and knows his stuff. Provides free drinks while you wait (and there is often a wait but not long). His regulars are usually very welcoming and often invite you into the conversation. He really enjoys chatting about old movies -- Ive discovered some really good ones on his recommendation. The haircut itself is quick but good; hell gladly do what you request, but if youre not certain he can come up with something on the fly that looks great. Decent price and it goes to a real person, not an artificial corporate chain. Oh dont forget: cash only.Since its right next to the theater and the pizza place, I like to make it an afternoon outing -- get a haircut, grab a slice, catch a movie. Great fun!

We (my wife and I) recently lost our barber of 20+ years (we miss you David) and began the arduous process of locating a suitable barber.we werent interested in a salon or similar places where foufou and $60+ haircuts ruled the day. We just wanted a good old fashioned haircut that looked good, didnt clean out my wallet, and to be treated with respect.We evaluated a few of the salon type places and said, um... no thanks. We called or visited most of the normal barber shops on the Portland East side.Some we couldnt get out of quickly enough, some we didnt even go in, and there were about four that were finalists. The first choice was Johnnys Original Montavilla Barber Shop.Hes very busy and it took a while to get in (appointments during the day and walk-ins start at 3:30 PM). We finally made it to the chair, we were treated like long-time valued customers, and loved our haircuts (I have wavy hair and most barbers leave me with frizzies and my hair looks like my finger had been in a light socket and it would take about three weeks of looking like an alien before I could feel good about how I looked) and was pleased with the price (tip him well as the cut he gives is worth more than he charges).I thought my first haircut might have been a fluke so I waited until the third pleasing cut to chime in.I am convinced weve found our new barber!

Johnny has been a staple in this neighborhood for a long time, though I only started going to him recently.His cuts are always fantastic, and his pricing is more than fair. Hes a friendly, welcoming guy with friendly clientele, so even if you need to wait for a cut, there are always great people to talk to.I dont anticipate ever getting haircut anywhere else in this city.

This place is awesome! Great haircut, neat stuff to look at, free beer, great conversation. Not just a quick in and out haircut this dude really takes his time and pays attention to detail.

Highly recommended. Stylists = shears (scissors). Barbers = clippers (electric buzz). I used to think it was all the same. While stylists at places like salons/Supercuts can cut shorter styles their training isn’t usually focused on shorter cuts. Barbers like Johnny train specifically for shorter cuts with clippers. If you have a shorter hair style think of stylists as universal fit parts were barbers are custom fit for your make and model. That said, the great cut wasn’t what impressed me most. In most waiting areas I keep my head down with eyes lock on my phone, as is the cultural norm. Johnny somehow managed to pull my attention away from the black mirror and engage with total strangers. I know that sounds scary but it’s worth it. Both conversationalists and real barbers are hard to come by but in Johnny I’m happy to have found both.

My very first actual barber experience today. So glad I went. His place is awesome. A real mans den. Hes also very easy to talk to. He gave me a great beard trim which Ive never trusted anyone to do.Thanks Johnny! Ill get those names for the next time I come in. Cheers!

Great cut and conversation

I went for a haircut at Johnnys Original Montavilla Barber Shop for the first time just the other day. Im 52 years old, and this may be the first time Ive set foot in a REAL barber shop since I was very young. Johnnys reminds me a bit of the old fashioned barber shop my father used to take me to when I was just a kid. Johnny is very friendly, with a great sense of humor. Whats more, he gives a good haircut at a very good price. The vibe in this place is so good Id go back again even if the haircuts were mediocre. But they arent, so Im in luck. As far as Im concerned, this is the best barber shop in Portland, bar none.
