If I had to choose between leasing with NorthSteppe again and eating the 30+ roaches Ive met throughout my entire apartment building over the course of the past year, I would eat the roaches. NorthSteppe did little to nothing to ensure safety, proper communication, or comfort for me as a resident. During my time in one of their studios, I was walked in-on for tours/showings without any warning at least 2-3 times, one of which I happened to be in the shower for. They also decided to complete maintenance on our laundry room without any building-wide warning, which involved fumes filling the hallways and jackhammers going off all day on a weekday, as well as the only four washers/dryers in the building being shut off for a full week and a half immediately after. That one was fun to deal with while taking only online classes for the year. They also struggled to get information to me in writing without being shady or painstakingly slow. For example, when I approached them about the unannounced tours, they sent me a follow-up email an entire month later saying that I graciously consented to let them in, which didnt happen since I was told I had no choice in the matter by the tour guide. They were also pretty inconsistent about charges on security deposits, which was more minor but still off-putting. It worked out better for me because I was probably undercharged, but they chose to charge about half of the damages that Id maintenance requested throughout the year, seemingly at random. I feel terrible for the maintenance workers, potential residents that toured my studio, and front desk workers who had to deal with me as I went off about the terrible experiences Id had with the company. I place all blame on their management, who are nothing short of likely overpaid cowards and liars who cant hold themselves or the actions of their business accountable. If you are someone whos looking for housing in OSUs off-campus area, I strongly advise that you look to lease with literally anyone else. If I could give negative or 0/5 star rating, I would.

I wish I could tell everyone who thinks about staying here how much I advise against it! I have stayed in my apartment for 4 years and it was a miserable time. There have been so many issues including sewage coming up from the bathtub to garbage accumulating in the parking lots. The heating system is completely outdated (as is the entire apartment complex) and if it wasn’t for my space heater I would say it is unlivable in the winter time (never got my thermostat above 65° during cold months with the heat on high). During leasing times which is December-July you get the pleasure of having people come shown your apartment 1-2 times per week and they even left my front door unlocked when I came home one time, crazy right. The washing machines would break periodically and would make it very hard to wash clothes with all the other tenants. Used outside laundromats many times. Walls are very thin and you can hear full conversations of your neighbors. Then when you move out and think the nightmare is over, you’ll get hit with some large cleaning fees and I left the place spotless. Also had a friend who stayed at one of their apartments nearby to see if he was charged and it was the same thing. Continue your search for a new apartment company.

DONT SIGN A LEASE WITH THEM. Regardless of what other places reviews are (hometeam, buckeye real estate etc) they aren’t as bad as this i promise. Ive lived in all of them. I think I’m able to give them 0 stars? I’m not sure but that’s what they deserve. The place I paid to live in was an absolute dump for $700 a month. I have lived on campus for 7 years through grad school and undergrad and had never not received the entire security deposit back. They charged over $450 to fill In nail holes and had the counted number of them. We had maybe 3 things hung up in that place since we were never there. They just try to rip off any person that’s there. We didn’t have heat in the winter for over 4 days too. You can do better than them

My AC stopped working like a month and a half ago and they have refused to send someone out to fix it. My apartment is over 100 degrees every single day and they seem to have no sense of urgency to get this fixed. My first Maintenance request was cancelled by them because they didn’t believe it had stopped working. The second time the maintenance guy said there was nothing he could do and it was an electrical issue so he would inform the property manager that they need to send an electrician to my apartment to fix it. Fast forward two weeks to now, when I’m writing this review, and I have not heard anything from them regarding the electrician or the status of my request. Whenever I call for an update the people are not helpful at all, and ask the same questions the previous person asked when I spoke to them the week/day earlier. Easily the worst management I’ve ever seen and they do not care about their tenants. They have no problem collecting my rent check at the beginning of every month though.

Hey so I never lived in a residence owned by NorthSteppe but I did sign a lease with them. I signed a lease with my boyfriend and we ended up breaking up prior to moving in together. I reached out to them over three month before the lease began. I had found someone who was willing to sublet the lease, and they refused. They would only let me out of the lease with a forfeit of my deposit. Theyre a big corporation and they dont care about people, obvious from the size of the company. They definitely acted within their rights but theyre not very considerate of individuals in difficult situations and they got $1100 from me and me ex for literally nothing. Also read the other reviews. Theres plenty of other options.

I’ve been renting from NorthSteppe for a few years now and the office staff are seriously the rudest people I have ever met. Every time I have to go in there for basic things they yell and give you an attitude no matter how polite and kind you are being... The only reason they even have a 2 star review is bc all the people reviewing before me, and myself, can’t give 0 star reviews. The woman with the straight hair who works in the corner must be the most miserable human I have ever met in my life. You would think she’s being tortured to work there with how absolutely awful and mean she is for no reason at all. I just do not understand how people can be that rude. Slammed doors in your face, throwing things, yelling. It’s that bad. I can’t go into details because I’m afraid they will discriminate against me while I’m renting from them. But wow if you can afford a better place, DO NOT RENT FROM HERE. If you’re considering renting from here and don’t trust all of the bad reviews, go into the office and speak with them yourself. If they act fakely kind because they want to sell you, act a little bit rude or ask tough questions and they will show their true colors. I did not listen to the reviews and horror stories and I regret it but it’s all I can afford.

They are willing to put the tenants at high health risk. I had to go as far as to get a mold inspector just for them to fix the issue. They kept on not replying to my email for weeks. The front office is completely disrespectful and unprofessional! Every time you to tell them an issue about the place, they act like they don’t know what your are talking about they can never help solve the issue. Also, High saftey issue! They won’t get new doors for the main entry to the apartment. Even though homeless people will get in and sleep in the lobby or even do drugs. When you have an issue with the apartment they will drag their feet to get the maintenance person out there to fix it. Most likely when you move in some or all of the repairs aren’t finished. College Students beware! I would rather you stay in the dorms than do business with those people. Do business with any other housing company but them.

This is the most unprofessional company I’ve ever experienced as a tenant. The office is essentially ran by children with attitudes, managed by a couple of adults with attitudes. I just sent a complaint about our complex’s mailboxes having been tampered with, and mail being all over the entry. I also mentioned in my complaint that I’ve had packages stolen and no longer feel as though it’s safe to receive mail. They’re response was only in regards to the stolen packages and how Columbus had an issue and to track my packages. *they just emailed me back as I type this telling me to submit a work order even though I asked for management to call me*Keeping on the mail issues - when I moved in, the USPS had no access to the building. They didn’t have a key. I asked northsteppe to get them one and they told me I’d need to call the post office and have them request it. The post office didn’t care to assist, they have a lot going on. After weeks of not receiving mail (illegal to block access to receiving mail), I had to track down our mailman and give him my own key and make a duplicate for myself from my boyfriend’s key.At one point, we had work done on the roof to this complex. Then we had a period of rain and it was constantly leaking into the hallways. They refused to do anything about it until I called the Health Department to file a formal complaint. They never changed the ruined carpet or replace anything. They just brought in some fans. It smelled like death for a long time. The tub in my apartment has chipping paint on the floor. I requested a new tub or for them to reseal it. They cancelled my work order.I reported seeing a roach run into my apartment from the hallway (I was able to kill it) but told them I’m sure there are more. They cancelled my work order. Or rather “completed” it, but nothing was ever done.I would NEVER recommend anyone do business with this company. Even my worst enemy. Their buildings are full of health hazards and they don’t care.

The apartment itself is fine, but the company is a nightmare and incredibly unprofessional. They are clearly trying to screw college students (their main renters) and others out of money whenever possible. The lease for our apartment isn’t even a year long and we paid over $300 for a parking pass to be added to the lease, the company neglected to mention that this already expensive parking pass didn’t even last the full lease or even 6 months! And instead of contacting us that the pass had expired, and we’re renters who pay on time every month and have had no issues since moving in, they just towed the car on a Saturday morning when they aren’t in the offices to be reached at all. This is absolutely uncalled for and the worst way to treat your renters, especially during a pandemic! We will never be renting from this company again and I never take the time to review a place but this company went too far so enjoy your hundredth 1 star review, I’d leave 0 if I could!

Disgusting apartment when we walked in, AC broke our first day in the middle of summer and wasn’t fixed until 4 days after we called their emergency number twice. Then, our water heater broke and was replaced by cutting a hole in our wall that was never fixed, despite being told they would fix it. You get barely any space and have to pay extreme prices, you’re better off staying in a hotel. The people that make the managerial decisions are slum lords and they know it so they take half of your deposit knowing you can’t do anything about it. They want their properties to stay dirty so when you leave after cleaning everything, they just leave an ambiguous reason and take off with your money. Choose any other property manager and you’ll be better off.

I was really afraid to rent from NorthSteppe after reading all the horrible reviews and hearing personal stories about what horrible landlords they have been. I really liked one of their apartments though so I just took a chance and rented through them. To my surprise, theyve been really good to me. I only submitted two maintenance requests throughout the year I rented with them and they followed up immediately with both. They even let me out of my lease after I renewed at no cost. After I moved out, I received my security deposit back in full within a month. I will say that the property I rented was a nice one in Victorian Village so perhaps they treat those in better apartments/areas more kindly.

Why would you schedule a showing of a property and then allow it to be rented by someone else before the showing happens? When no other times were available for a showing and I was told I would have the first opportunity at the property. When I asked how this happened the answer I was given I have no idea what happened. Not sure why some people have such a bad experience with them. Thats my second year renting from them, and I renewed for the third one. The advantages of this company are:1) Probably the cheapest options on campus2) There are good options relatively close to campus3) They fix maintenance problems within 1-2 hours after they get a request (that you can do online). Seriously, they were stellar in their prompt responses to our house problems! Even when we had a mouse problem, they came in and made sure we got free mousetraps until the pest company handled things.4) Very easy to pay online5) Never really had problems communicating with them (although to be fair I always did it in-person).6) They were flexible enough in handling some financial problems we had because of some of the roommates.7) The office is pretty much on campus, so you can always stop by and ask questions.8) The sublet process is pretty straightforward.Disadvantages:1) You want to handle all documents in person. I dont think their email is reliable.2) Generally any questions about the lease or property should be asked in person. I just found that that was the quickest way to get the information from them.3) I dont drive, but for those who do - the parking pass in the backyard costs $300. Thats a lot. However, usually there is free street parking, so not too big of a problem.4) The lease is shared, which means that if your roommate bails on you, you gotta cover it on your own. Thats not fun - I went through it myself. You wanna have a roommate agreement that takes care of that independently of the lease.5) If you want to renew the lease, you have to do it VERY early - in fall (for the next year). Thats too long-term for me, but I think you should be able to find a substitute if you change your mind. They always give a prior notice before they come over for whatever reason. The only thing I didnt like was how they handled my deposit return - which, unfortunately, is a common bad practice for agencies dealing with students here.

My roommate and I have rented from NorthSteppe Realty since 2014. Weve rented three different properties in the last four years, and have been nothing short of satisfied. Properties have always been renovated before weve moved in, anything not to our satisfaction their crew would come and fix in the first month of our occupation. The maintenance team is kind and friendly, and always working their hardest in the beginning of the school year to meet every properties needs. The staff in the rental office really helped us transfer our lease to another property in the middle of the school year. For every stressful situation weve had in our current property, weve had a team of professionals who could come help that day or the next - from a leaky roof, bees nest, bowing deck, and even a bat! Weve been able to depend on them to find timely solutions. From redoing the roof, to removing the nest to replacing the deck to having an exterminator eliminate all holes in the house.Could you imagine living in these old off-campus houses without a responsive Realty group? Wow. Its been rough living here. There were leaks in the ceiling in every single room for the first six months. There were about two months where every time we used the the dryer the power would shut off and wed have to go outside and shut the breaker on and off. No matter how many times I reached out to them nothing was properly fixed. We also had multiple instances of maintenance and the owners going in our apartment without notice. This probably happened 5-7 times. Now theres been super loud construction on two of the apartments in an apartment building with four apartments in it. The construction starts at 9am and lasts until 4. I reached out to the company to see if theyd take money off the rent for dealing with this. Several days later someone came to tell me that they were done with construction so I didnt have to worry about it. They were a little bit more quiet for a few days but now the drilling and sawing has started back up. I would not recommend living in these apartments. Especially is you value your sanity and dont have time to contact maintenance seven days a week for six months until something is fixed.

The Bad:-Theyve entered our apartment without giving a 24 hour notice, or any notice at all. When I called to point this out, the woman on the phone was angry.-They charge $300 PER parking pass, and will tow any cars without it. Our friends were towed after only parking there for 5 minutes to drop off some food.-They overcharge on water, $20 per resident. Its insane that just my water bill is $120.-The lease ends 2 weeks before the year move in mark, in early July. A time that makes it difficult to find other off campus housing, it really pressures you to renew your lease.-The painters they have come in before you move in paint over everything. They painted our windows shut, over the doorknobs, door hinges, etc. If its on the wall, it was painted. Northsteppe came and opened everything, but some of the stuff was damaged in the process, and it was a pain to not have the windows open for a few days in July. The Good:-They are fast to fix repairs.-Paying rent online is easy-You can request repairs easily online at anytime of day.

When we moved in the house was filthy, cracks everywhere, paint chipping, and none of the doors locked. There was a steep staircase with no railing whatsoever and it took 11 maintenance requests and 6 weeks of waiting to just get that installed. The house got broken into and they told us they would replace the front doors with new, solid, all-wooden doors (the old ones had a glass pane in the middle) and after the police left they cancelled that request. When I asked why, they beat around the bush and gave me so much attitude. Instead of trying to ensure the safety of their tenants they denied our request for a security system or new doors (There were already cameras installed around the house but they werent activated, which of course NorthSteppe also refused to do). Parking out back on rocks costs $300 and when we moved in there wasnt even a light in the back; it took 6-7 maintenance requests to get that installed. They said I would have access to the portal in a few daysFast forward a month later, they finally give access along with an eviction notice and a “legal fee” of nearly $400.The communication is absolutely horrible, essentially I felt as if you have a complaint, you get an email saying “we’re sorry, we won’t do anything and don’t even think about trying to go against our legal team”The worse part is living in Columbus for 6 years you are living under a rock if you’ve never heard horror stories about these guys. I intentionally avoided them for a while, but I had no choice when they bought my property mid lease. Oh well, only 6 more months.

This company is in fact the definition of slumlord... from selling me an expired parking sticker ($300) that almost got me towed or the homeless people that lived in the basement for 3 weeks next to the washer and dryer that stole laundry from me, these guys dont care about anything but gettin your money. The unit WAS NOT cleaned or painted before I arrived but was livable so I moved in. Since then the only responses Ive gotten from the office about ANY concern is that either its not their problem or an email needs to be sent but Ive yet to ever receive a response. Oh then theres the whole giving me 24hr notice to show my apartment 7 months before Im even supposed to move out? Im expected to cage my dogs each time and sometimes twice in one day? I comply on all levels but no one shows up? This is absolutely Northsteppe taking advantage of college kids and their money oh wait... Im not a college kid and its very clear how terrible they treat their tenants. Despite the maintenance staff being friendly the rest of the company couldnt care less... just go in and talk to the seemingly unhappy people behind the counter... they usually act very annoyed you even came in to bother them unfortunately.

Im not sure why North Steppe is only at 2.5 stars. I give them 4 stars because Ive had maintenance requests filled on time and they communicated well with me as a whole. Students are a big part of the business and while they dont provide 10/10 customer service they still are helpful and do their jobs. I think a lot of people complain about how unfriendly the staff is, but remember that hundreds of people contact them daily and they are just students. I do think its something they can improve upon. A big part of customer service is making the potential customer excited to be there, and I dont particularly like interacting with the staff face-to-face. But actually living in the apartments and communicating about issues deserves a 4-star rating. I had a pleasant experience in my one year of renting with N.S. and Im about to move in for a second year with them. If youre a student thinking of renting, just do it. Theyre bigger than a one-person company (these have always given me plenty of issues) and will communicate with you well.

I have regretted moving into my apartment with Northsteppe since I stepped foot here my first day. They did not clean the apartment at ALL. There were dirt stains on the floor that not even bleach could remove. The windows were filled with dead bugs. One of the eyes on the stove was broken. And worst of all, it was FILLED with live bugs. Roaches, spiders, centipedes, etc. One night a neighbor came to my door crying because a bug fell from her ceiling and she was scared to handle it alone. I requested to move to a higher apartment and they never even responded. I really wish I had read the reviews. These are really no living conditions. If I could give 0 stars I would.

Need to work on professionalism. They like to show apartments when tenants still live there and have several months left on lease, and they will come at any hour on short notice. Honestly, I recommend installing an IP security camera if you live somewhere managed by NorthSteppe. Ive read other people have had to deal with things being stolen/messed with when they enter while theyre not home

They usually respond to my emails within a few days which is nice, but when we moved into our house the living room closet was missing rings on the door, my bedroom window was cracked, there was spare doors and an AC unit in the basement, and we had to do a lot of cleaning on our own which I didnt expect considering all of the fees and other demands in the lease that you have to meet before moving out.

Not sure where all the bad reviews come from. My experience has been the complete opposite. We moved into a beautifully redone old house in the German Village. Being an old home, there were some minor issues that needed repair. Weve put in requests late at night, and the next morning there are friendly people out to do maintenance. Weve been in our place less than a month, but so far, NorthSteppe has gone above and beyond for their service.

I usually do not write reviews, but after just being surprised by their response to a request (surprised in a GOOD way), I wanted to share my experience. We moved in to our property in August of 2018 and have renewed it for the next year already. Below are a few of my feedback:1) We really like the property. It is an older home and there are definitely signs of it (for instance the floors are a bit uneven and the bath tub is older), however they did a remodel that did a good job making the house not only livable but actually really cute. The kitchen, doors and windows are brand new. The bathroom has new floors and a new sink and shower door but the tub itself is older. The house was very clean when we moved into it. There are two parking spots on our driveway included in the rent, which is VERY nice.2) When we signed the lease, we though that the house had central air, but we were mistaken. After communicating with them, they offered to install the new system with no issues.3) We ended up getting bed bugs. It is impossible to know if they were there or if we brought them in from one of our trips, but it happened. It was horrible! Northsteppe did what they could and someone came three times to spray the house. Spraying the house takes a long time to get rid of bed bugs, and I could not stand it and ended up paying for a heat treatment myself, which Northsteppe allowed us to do.4) Every maintenance request we have had (which has been a total of four), they have been prompt and very helpful. My latest request was asking if I could install shelves in the closets if I purchased them, and they actually offered to buy and install them for us free of charge.I have only had a good experience so far and hope that it continues. I wanted to share because it seems like so many people have had issues, but it is not always the case. My advice would be to check the property carefully when you visit, ask questions and if there are obvious signs that the property itself is too run down, do not sign.

Contacted NorthSteppe regarding a leak in our bathroom. Thought it might take at least a week for them to come fix it. Within 5 hours, they had came to the house and fixed the leak without any of us even knowing. Great to know if we have major issues, NorthSteppe will be alway to help quickly.

I was supposed to see an apartment they offered that I really liked. I called several times asking for a showing later in the day so I dont have to take off too early from work, even offered to pay a deposit. They assured me it is available, told me no one scheduled to see it. I called yesterday to confirm the appt, all is good. I called today at 3:35 to confirm again the appt at 4:30 and the person behind the phone casually says Its been taken, and that they were just about to call me. Needless to say I am going to avoid that company.

Ive only been living in my house for less than a month but I have had nothing but great service from NorthSteppe. All of our maintenance requests have been taken care of very quickly. Everyone Ive talked to at the office has been nothing but friendly and helpful. The only downside is that the rent and parking fee are on the higher end of things. Despite the other bad reviews I would definitely recommend NorthSteppe to another person.

These slugs completely screwed over my friend today. They knew she was coming in to sign her lease today after telling her the apartment was hers and that she had nothing to worry about. She overnighted the holding check and pet fee and when she gets there today, they tell her they gave it to someone else. They then had the audacity to suggest one of their other properties to her. I guess unless you create a blood pact with this company, you’re not guaranteed anything. Very slimy.

Northsteppe is pretty okay. Ive only had to give them a call about problems a couple of times, and each time they were pretty helpful and patient with me. And the turnaround for maintenance requests is usually 2-3 days for small things like repairs or pests. Maybe a week or two for an AC unit in the summer.

1. Now that Im leaving, theyre not paying attention to my maintenance requests, and I cant use the toilet.2. DO NOT EVER LIVE THROUGH THEM.When I moved in, none of the appliances worked and everything (door hinges, etc) was broken. We’ve only been here for 3 MONTHS and they have showed our house to 4 different future tenants. I have also never heard of a rental not giving any grace period what’s-so-ever. Even if your bank is closed on Saturday but it’s the 1st, or the 1st is on a holiday. They automatically charge you $50 per day or 5% of your rent (whichever is greater). I’ll have an upcoming charge of $200 because I’d rather pay my rent 2 days late next month rather than on the 1st. If you ever been to this office in person you can see just how miserable all the workers are. I will try to avoid this place indefinitely and recommend everyone else should too.

Just moved into our new place with Northsteppe and so far everything was relatively clean for a college house. All the windows do not have screens and theres was hella broken glass outside from the previous owners, but maintenance has been really speedy and hopefully it stays that way! Only other downside: they ask $300 per person to park in our own backyard when you can park right out front for $25 through the city. 🤔

Our apartment flooded three times within 1.5 years. Maintenance was quick to respond but they took $400 out of our security deposit for minor damages like nail holes and a water stain that was on the wall. I have never felt more taken advantage of. I wrote a email explaining the situation and they still refused to give us any money back. I would never recommend them to anyone, they rip you off. They also charged us a late fee one month when our rent wasnt late. Be careful renting through them theyre there to take your money and hope you wont notice/say anything.

In ten years of renting first with family and now alone, North Steppe has been the single worst rental company that I have had the displeasure of working with. They are difficult to contact sometimes I cant get through to an employee at all during business hours, nor do they respond in a timely manner either to voicemails or e-mails. Maintenance depending on the worker and or issue(s) can take extended amounts of time to be resolved Ive even had orders partially completed or not at all (we had roaches with photographic evidence reported by the neighbor, North Steppe tried to say it water bugs from stagnant water; although at first, the maintenance man said septic; sitting in the basement and wouldnt call in pest control for weeks). I would advise running in the opposite direction if you are interested in a North Steppe property.

The apartment I stayed in was in pretty bad condition: outlets were loose, floor was splintering and ripping my socks, towel racks and closet rods were all broken, and the air filter was in dire need of replacement. The office staff was extremely rude so we didnt feel the urge to reach out to them any more....However, they did replace our blinds and they recently added a nicer refrigerator to our apartment, so it is clear that they spend at least a little money on their residents.

Northstep is a great company for the most. They have a great maintenance team, that repairs things very quickly. When we moved in our place smelled like heavy smoke and weed, they did a terrible job cleaning that smell out of the unit.My only other complaint would be my location off of 13 ave. Its very loud with traffic, as well as you have to take a gamble with how loud your neighbors will be. Mine for instance had speakers that could be used at a concert. Very unpleasant and annoying all year. Also the walk to osu was around 10-15 minutes everyday.

The office staff was very helpful during move in, but the house we moved into is in rough shape. Its a shame, I have a friend that has a nearly identical house from the same time period and they do not have the buckling/cracking walls and ceilings, cut wires dangling, sloppy paint job that got all over the baseboards, doorframes, windowframes, floor, or the splintering wood floors. The house is old, and livable, but I have seen a very obvious example of how much better it is possible to make it, yet this nicer house in the same location pays nearly $400/month less than we do here. I think the house has charm but I wish our money would go toward fixing up the place

This company is all about profit. Rent is way too high and many of their properties have fixed utility rates that Im sure work in their favor. And if not they have tried to come back and charge their tenants more! Look up the law suit filed against them in 2006.They take old, falling apart properties and glue them together enough to rent out. They will put in new appliances and fixtures to entice you but beware. The maintenance and housekeeping crew are generally nice and helpful people but you are never given a time frame for when they will arrive at your unit. And you will be astounded how often you have to call them / submit maintenance requests. For us, once a month, without fail, something broke or leaked or burst or clogged or went out. A perfect example of their half-measure strategies is how when we complained of purple/black mold around our heating/AC units they came and spray painted over it to stop the growth and gave us a dehumidifier. They know full well the real problem is condensation and dripping water from un-insulated pipes but wont actually fix it.Anytime you call the office you are going to be speaking with an apathetic, terse representative who has NO interest in customer service. Little things like do you have any other questions or even goodbye are never said. Also our unit was filthy when we moved in. They did not clean as promised in the lease. BEWARE. NorthSteppe Realty is the definition of a slumlord.

Anytime you see a suspicious amount of money billed to you, just be careful and stand your ground. They usually do not know what they are talking about and get confused with what they want. They accuse you of information that they never provide for you, and on top of that, some of the staff members can be very condescending and rude. Just be careful ,and though they are cheap they are very inconsiderate.
