Our local veterinarian referred us to an ophthalmologist because he thought our Doberman puppy had some vision problems. I couldn’t have been more pleased. Our puppy, almost 5 months old, is uncomfortable around people she doesn’t know and everyone there was so kind and so patient with her. They were very knowledgeable and they explained clearly what was going on with her eyes, which thankfully isn’t affecting her vision. Yes, they are more expensive than our regular vet, but they did three or four different tests on her plus the eye exam, and it was well worth the cost to have the experts let us know what was going on. I couldn’t have been more pleased.

The Horse I lease received great care here and we would take him there if we needed too. The only reason I gave four out of five starts is because when we picked him up the Dr. in charged of his care told us they would appreciate it if we would bring him back to Mizzou for a necropsy when he passes away. I found this a little offensive and inappropriate because we were give a good prognosis and I felt that it was not the right place or time for that type of comment. I get they are a research hospital but I feel like they need to work on their bedside manner. I know in the back of my mind the comment was coming from the scientist within her but it still should not have been said in that moment. They need to work on reading the room. Other than that they were great and with out a doubt we would take him back there if we needed to.

I want to personally thank the staff at Veterinary Health Center who helped my 8 month old Mini Goldendoodle puppy (Macy) recover from a serious medical emergency. Macy got ahold of my hearing aids and chewed them up and swallowed many of the parts including a battery which resulted in a very serious situation. I drove three hours to see them and Im so happy I did. The staff was very caring and professional and Im so thankful for everything they did.

Hello Desperate, worried, scared, pet owner. This place will do anything and everything to give you closure regarding your pets health. Our fur baby Contracted a rapid disease that is untreatable (CD). We received mixed answers from 3 other veterinarians and these compassionate people did every test and treatment possible, and were willing to continue treatment even though the results would be fruitless. We have absolutely no doubt in our minds that we explored any and all options to save our pets life. They supported our decisions no matter what. If you are looking for a straight answer this is the place to go.

Took our senior pet here on a weekend for acute neurological symptoms as his normal vet wasn’t open at the time. The entire experience from beginning to end was frankly unprofessional and down right awful. 10 minutes after he was taken inside and we were left in the parking lot, we got a phone call. We were told that there was essentially a 100% chance his symptoms were caused by a brain tumor or cervical spine tumor and that we could admit him overnight for an MRI in the morning, but his prognosis was very poor and he likely only had 1-2 weeks left to live with minimal treatment options. Not only did they have this conversation with us on the phone, it was littered with medical jargon and we were barely given the opportunity to even ask a question. We asked for a few minutes to process and discuss next steps amongst ourselves and were told she would call us back in 15 minutes. 45 minutes goes by and we have received no call so we called requesting to speak with someone. Another 20 minutes passed before we were called back. We asked to take our dog home to enjoy whatever time we had left and were told they would bring him out in 20 minutes. An hour and a half later they finally brought our dog out to us. Additionally they shaved his leg despite him having no intervention and labs weren’t drawn. An hour after getting home his symptoms had completely resolved. He was seen by his regular vet with absolutely no abnormalities several days later who says their diagnosis was likely completely off base. This was four weeks ago and he remains completely normal. Between the poor communication (both lacking and not face to face), outrageous cost, complete lack of compassion while giving awful news (once again via a phone call) and unwillingness to think of any other possible causes of our pets symptoms, the whole experience was awful. We will never be coming back. And would never recommend this place to anyone.

I don’t even want to give them one star. They need to have more respect & caring for our family members. They take advantage cause they are our little family members and that they are animals and charge outrageous prices. When you take your family up there to find out what the problem is through emergency then they should get on it right away. And figure it out not send home with pneumonia and see if it clears up. Went back couple days later because when she came home she was worse. Quit eating and doing the same thing she was supposed to be checked for. Finally figured something out back through emergency again waited 6 days before they did something finally also no food because they were going to do surgery. So weaker and sicker. Finally came home over the battle and again she was much much worse than when she went up there the first time. She was suffering but you think maybe it’s from surgery but on top of that can’t talk to anyone, won’t call you back, answer emails timely. Didn’t call back like they said they would and have go to vet in town cause they care and the problem she had don’t think it was fixed at all because it was there. They had made her worse and now she’s gone forever. Spent her last two weeks really suffering and hurting, couldn’t sleep and getting weaker not to mention lost 10lbs because they didn’t fix her and didn’t care to give me an answer on what it could possibly be and what to do to help her. Oh but they be glad to take her through emergency and get your 1/2 down before they even do anything. I will never ever take any of my family members to them again & I will tell everyone I know how they handled & didn’t handle the situation and not to take their family members there. Worse every time I brought her home. Makes you wonder how they take care of them there. Just pump them full of medicine and put them in a cage and then have their college want to be vet dr’s to experiment surgeries on what they think the problem is or improving quality of life. Which didn’t happen it was worse. All they care about is getting their overpriced charges for the nothing they do. I wish I never ever took her there. They need qualified experienced for years people who really care about animals as if they were there own to take care and go above and beyond to find out what the problem is for our little family members and make sure it was done. Not even a check up appointment to make sure and see how things are. Just oh you can bring them to emergency and we will get to it when we can to see what’s going so they can sit in a cage and get worse while waiting to be seen. It’s a sad world when you can’t count on someone who is supposed to know what they are doing and care about what they are doing to help someone else. To that place it’s just all about collecting the money whether they actually do the job they are supposed to do or not. They don’t care

Update to original post: there now is another emergency vet option in Columbia- Horton Discovery.TL;DR- Customer service is frequently poor to just plain bad, and they are unabashedly expensive. Its a shame theres not another option for emergency veterinary services. Not my regular veterinarian, but I have taken my cat twice for minor medical emergences- a bite on his tail and a head injury. Treatment for his tail was cleaning the wound- they kept him for 7 hours and I had to call repeatedly, only to be put on hold for ages, and then to be told they were about to get to it. I felt terrible for the cat sitting in a stressful vet hospital with no painkillers for hours just to have a wound flushed. I couldnt get anyones attention until I became rude with them, and their excuse was that they got busy. I realize veterinary care here is unpredictable, but if getting busy puts them 7 hours behind, theres no way they are staffing their clinic appropriately. The second time, for the cats head injury, the doctor who called was a terrible communicator, which is not the first time Ive experienced that here. An example- I asked the doctor how the cats injury would be treated and she launched into an explanation of benign neglect -meaning just let it heal.I feel like the same main issues are repeated in these reviews over and over, and I havent seen any indication that they take them seriously.

I called at 8:38am on 08/23/2020 as my dog who was under Oncology care with MU Cancer Center (Dr. Chu) was exhibiting extreme discomfort and pain and we wanted to bring him to the Small Animal Emergency/Critical Care Center. I was told by Ben, the receptionist, to head that way and to call when we were close so he could put us in the system. We did so and were told to call when we arrived. We arrived, called at 10:24am and waited approximately 10-15 minutes for the student to come out to retrieve our pet. We asked the student to make sure Wally was given meds for pain as he was in such discomfort and she assured us he would be given pain medication. We had not heard anything so called at 3:27pm to request the doctor contact us. When we did not receive a call by 3:37pm I went to the Emergency entrance and knocked on the window to get a response. Ben came to the door at which point I told him I expected the doctor to call me immediately. Dr. Easley called at 3:42pm. At this time Wally had not been given any pain medication, nor had he been diagnosed by the doctor. We approved x-ray and sedated ultra-sound, stating we expected this to be done immediately. Dr. Easley noted there had been 25 cases after Wally was brought in so they were behind. While we understand that, we saw ALL of those cases while waiting in the parking lot and none appeared to be in discomfort or as stressed as our pet. At 5:30pm Dr. Easley called to say there were two masses and the ultra-sound was inconclusive so she recommended we return between 6:30am - 7:30am the next day (08/24) for Wally to be turned over to the Oncology unit for sedated ultra-sound with needle aspirate. She stated there would be NO emergency/after-hours fee for this. We stayed in a hotel, during which Wally was extremely uncomfortable all night and called at 6:30am on 08/24 to be told to bring him in at 7:30am which we did. At 7:53am we received a phone call that Dr. Jeff Bryan had asked that we bring Wally in at 10:30am after their rounds. I told Nora, who called, that Wally was brought in at 7:30am. Dr. Reich performed the sedated ultra-sound but was unable to obtain the necessary cells to make a definitive pathology of the two masses. I had asked Dr. Reich during our first phone call to please keep up informed, explaining that had not been done the day before. Dr. Reich was very diligent about keeping us informed. In closing, the care our pet received on 08/23, as well as the communication were EXTREMELY lacking. Wallys pain and stress were compounded unnecessarily by not giving him the pain meds as requested/promised and keeping him in a cage for over five hours with nothing done! Our stress was compounded unnecessarily by Dr. Easleys neglect in keeping us informed and not contacting us at all until we became insistent! We understand that emergencies are handled on a case-by-case basis with those critical being triaged first, but the way our pets care was handled, and our stress level multiplied, is completely unnecessary and unconscionable! Not only will we never use these facilities again, but we will discourage others from doing so. I strongly recommend steps be taken to ensure things like this dont happen in future. When we bring our pet to your Emergency/Critical Care facility, we have the right to expect treatment which is efficient, compassionate and complete.

My husband gets there and someone beeps him in and one of the vets came running at my husband and our dog and says heCant be in there without a mask, then starts to pull my dogs leash out of my husbands hand and saying he will take our dog with no paperwork signed or anything....then they called cops on my husband for slamming a door and my husband explained to them what was going on. This University of Missouri Veterinary Teaching Hospital (Columbia Missouri) is a big disappointment. I brought my dog in bright and happy and they gave me back my dog two days later, lethargic, would hardly acknowledge me and she died on the way home in my car. Their communication was pathetic and I believe they were hiding something from me as well (possibly a medical error on their part). The technicians that came out to my vehicle to get my dog were nice but clueless and unprofessional, needing much better training. For the amount that the hospital charges for the care of a pet, they should be much more qualified to answer questions. When they gave me my dog back and I asked why her demeanor was so bad, the technicians stated that she must just be sedated? They were wrong. She was dying! The hospital originally quoted $600 for an overnight stay and then put a hold on my credit card for up to $1200 (stating it would not go that high, it was just policy). After two days in the hospital, the amount doubled up to $2400. This hospital has hidden fees, they ask to do more procedures and keep you in dark about the total amount being charged. They always try to do everything the expensive way. Always trying to get more money from you. The care they gave my dog killed her! She was in no means in critical condition when I brought her to the hospital. She was hanging her head out the window of my vehicle, enjoying the ride. All they had to say to me was “I am sorry, she was nearing the end of her life anyway. I suggest going to another medical facility where the doctors have all graduated and they are not learning on your pet. Get all charges in writing as you Ok treatment for your pet and have them tally it up to that moment, for exactly what you are being charged for that day and hour. I will never bring any animal to this facility again. I miss my sweet little girl so… very much. My dog did not deserve to have her life ended this way. I never had a chance to say goodbye. Wish I never brought her there. (One last thing, her ER doctor just graduated from college and received her license two months prior to my visit, which I did not know, as I looked up her license. That is not the type of care I thought I was paying for. I did not want a new graduate learning her job skills on my dog. I expected a much more tenured doctor. Especially for the amount being charged. I contacted the hospital director David Wilson and he only answered one email and stopped communicating with me. That is poor customer service and care.)

Tech Jerry was informed that our dog is needing help asap has not ate in a week wouldnt get up, very lathergic and blood in urine... we was expecting her to die within the next day or so. She quoted us a price of $2,000 to $2,500 being on the high end for her surgery. Our dog had just been fully evaluated just prior from our local vet the day after. they recommend MU vet clinic to do the surgery as they do not do internal surveys like this.Mu small vet clicnic told that she needed to have ANOTHER full examination (blood work, ultrasounds and so forth, she had just had 2 x rays visits, 2x blood work, and ultrasound done 1 day JUSTbpriornfrom our local vet . Well... this was not good enough and they wanted JUST $1,000 for x rays alone! the cost for surgery I was told AFTER we arrived and our dof was in the clinic would be around $8,000 to $10,000 to remove her mass and that did not include other things... so we looking at $14,000 -$18,000 how the HECK do I get quoted that and then turn around on me and want a significant amount. Tech quoted e $2,500 ontl the high end side. NOTHING had changed... everything was already done and the health issue cause was already found, she just needed the surgery before it killed her.WE ALSO waited 4 hours in the car just so she could have her renal temperature checked and for the doctor to go over her records and discuss about her results from what our vet had done. I honestly dont know why it took so many hours plus I called ahead to inform them we was coming in by 40 minutes prior to the 4 hours ....Now we are stil stuck in the same spot of evaluations and no surgery was never done! Obviously we cannot afford close to 20 grand!Plus exhausted our poor dog even more and I feel like they tried to corner us into a HUGE debt nightmare.I seriously hope this helps someone the time and hope this helps a poor dog that may be suffering... unless you are honestly willing to pay around $15,000 for a surgery I would stear clear BTW the soonest they could even do her surgery was days out! She would have been dead by then... she was having kidney failure no food digested in a week...blood in urine could barely walk and acted drunk like. I had to force feed her for energy just to make it into the clinic in goes of doing the surgery.I

I used to think highly of this organization for the care of my horses, dogs and cats. The last few years, they have gone too corporate and all they care about is pushing the most expensive therapies- calling them the gold standard of care. So, if you dont choose their gold standard of care, then you evidently dont care about your animals health and welfare. Recently rescued a stray malnourished cat from a large soy bean field. Took him to my vet for cat cough symptoms (as seen on the internet). Based on his lung x-ray my vet had me take him to MU urgent care for (what looked like) a serious fungal infection in his lungs. Sobe is the first cat they have diagnosed and treated with heart worms. He went on a Sunday and released on Tuesday. He has not coughed once since returning home!!I have read a few posts from disgruntled pet parents feeling their MU vet had mentioned a lot of tests be done. My advice is let your pets doctor run these tests until a positive result takes them in the right direction. I did feel overwhelmed.... but realize 1 positive test takes them closer to a proper diagnosis. Because heart worms in cats is so rare, Sobe will be monitored by his local vet and that information will be shared with his MU team. This is how they continue to learn on their own free time. Never ever self treat your cat with over the counter meds for heart worms until they have been tested by their vet!!

NO NO NO...I cant speak to the medical offerings at this facility, but please dont waste your money on a behavioral evaluation. We sought the assistance of Dr. Koch while we were struggling with our fearful and aggressive mastiff mix. We basically received little to no help with our issues. We brought our dog in, and the doctor and some students sat behind a barrier and talked with us. All throughout our visit, the doctor threw chicken, over the barrier, to our dog any time she became reactive. We seriously received completely ludicrous advice such as... put a fence inside the fence you already have in your back yard... cover the windows so the dog doesnt react to anything outside... consider euthanasia... put a bracket inside of our home, firmly in a wall stud, so we can tether our dog while she is inside...place a yoga mat on our floor and when our dog accidentally lays on it, give her a treat... leave bowls of treats throughout the house to distract her... and medicate her. THAT especially was a horrible experience for our poor dog. We paid an enormous bill, and were told to follow up (of course for another phenomenal fee) with the doctor. This doctor did absolutely nothing except shamelessly exploit a very painful situation. Please seek reputable dog trainers if youre struggling with difficult behaviors.

After two three hour drives here they determined that our dog did not have congestive heart failure only mild heart disease. When I asked why he had fluid in his lungs previously they said they couldn’t say only that it wasn’t due to his heart and had us discontinue all of his heart medications. That was three months ago. My dog is currently hospitalized at a local emergency vet and in critical condition due to fluid in his lungs from advanced congestive heart failure. I will NEVER take another pet here. They failed us. UPDATE: We had to put my dog to sleep as he was not responding to the medications and was struggling to breathe. He died of end stage congestive heart failure. After that there was no communication they sent him home with no pain meds just a steroid and said make sure he urinates thats it. They didnt give any information what to watch for etc. It took almost 24 hours to be able to get pain meds for him as we kept calling wondering why he didnt receive any., they wouldnt tell us the cost just we would be charged.so we drove three hours back to get the pain meds. We found another hospital they wanted his records and Mu took another 16 hours to send his records, they kept saying they sent them , it wasnt until I talked to a head manager that the records actually got sent.. The new hospital ended up doing MRI and surgury with a 5 day hospital stay for 3500 with excellent reviews and not students performing the work and the compassion and communication was amazing. Collar, no tags, so I was hopeful but a chip. 7pm the day after Christmas and everywhere I call is closed. I show up to UMVC after inquiring if they had a way to read chips and I was greeted by Brett, the front desk receptionist for the evening. He immediately helped us by giving us a leash for the dog and read the chip and got info back instantly. It took numerous phone calls and hoops to get ahold of the right contact person for Moose, but our luck prevailed and Moose’s owner was able to pick him up immediately. Brett was kind, patient, attentive, and easy to go through a stressful situation like this with. He even had dinner waiting for him to eat and wasn’t even tempted to chow while helping us. I am so thankful Brett was working while this ordeal went down, otherwise I would now have a dog miles away from his actual home and not the comfort of knowing he is where he’s supposed to be. I was very worried that she had pneumonia so I took her into the MU vet hospital. We were seen immediately by a student who “highly recommended” some kind of flu test (which required a painful rectal swab) for a “small fee”. Of course the test was negative considering her symptoms were relating to her lungs and not the flu. Then the doctor came into the room and recommended that they run multiple tests on her heart to see what kind of murmur it is. I was told the testing would be about $1000 and it was life or death for my puppy. So of course, I did what they recommended and took out the UAS loan to help my puppy. $1200 and 7 hours later, the doctor comes in WITH NO NEW INFORMATION ABOUT HER HEART CONDITION. She told me the exact same thing that the vet I got her from told me “she’s fine right now, it will either heal itself or she will have to be on medication in the future”. Money wasted and my dog is still sick. Then she did an X-ray and diagnosed her with pneumonia and we were sent home with meds. She got better, and brought her back for a follow up. This time we saw a new doctor, who said my puppy looks healthy (other than slightly low cortisol levels in her blood test from last week but nothing to worry about right now) and would go to the back to get my discharge papers. She came back with no papers and instead recommended that I get her tested for Addison’s disease asap. I said “no thanks the first doctor said her blood tests were fine”. She looked at me like I was some kind of horrible human and went back to get my paperwork and came back AGAIN and said “you need to get her tested ASAP or she could go into a crisis and die. If you get it done today you’ll only have to pay for the test which is $130” I again said no and had to CUT HER OFF to get her to quit hounding me. I called the next day to schedule the test and they said “I don’t know who told you it was $130, the test alone is $800”. Nope. If I actually thought my puppy had Addisons (which she was only 3 months then and Addisons doesn’t usually show up until at least a year) I would have gotten the test done. BOTTOM LINE THEY DO EXPENSIVE, PAINFUL, AND UNNECESSARY TESTING OUT OF PROFESSIONAL CURIOSITY AND TO GET THE EXPERIENCE FOR THE PROGRAM. DO NOT LET THEM TALK YOU INTO DOING ANYTHING YOU DONT THINK IS NECESSARY FOR YOUR PET. They will make you feel horrible but do not give in. My puppy had a simple case of aspiration pneumonia from eating too fast, which could have been fixed with 1) an X-ray and 2) medication. I got scammed due to my age and emotions (I was scared my new puppy was gonna die and that’s what they were leading me to believe if I didn’t sign everything they told me to!!!) I still give them 2 stars because in the end, my puppy is Pneumonia free now

I’d give zero stars if I could. It took 7 hours to get one radiograph and one lab test. To the astronomical cost of $316!!! Worse than that was the additional stress it placed on my dog. She was sick and seven hours in the ER was inexcusable! No diagnosis was made. She was given no relief from her discomfort. The students and residents were timid and uncertain. It was a living nightmare. Unless your pet is experiencing a life threatening situation you are better advised to wait until Monday when you can be seen at a private practice.

Excellent facility- if you love your pet(s) this is the place that can keep them healthy and well. The more medical eyes and expertise on your pet the better. The professors and students have all been courteous, professional and answer all questions you have and provide spot on treatments for your pet.Be aware : Make a full stop at the crosswalk, near the emergency entrance of the UM Veterinary Health Center, even if there are no pedestrians present. The campus police frequently sit in the parking lot (especially in the summer months) and watch that crosswalk . The fine for not making a complete stop is a whooping $100 ticket. The campus police could care less if you have a sick animal or trying to pick up a prescription before the pharmacy closes and exhibit zero compassion-they seem to prey on clients of the facility. I have personally seen campus police and UM maintenance vehicles not stop at that crosswalk -so there seems to be a double standard.

The Vets are willing to go the extra mile to help you! Unfortunately, the assistants answering the phone are not always much help. The only way I was able to get a hold a specific vet, that knew my dogs health issues, was send an email to a student that helped me before when I took my dog in to her appointment. Which probably isnt very professional, but when you are passed around to so many different people and have to explain your dogs situation a million times it gets very frustrating and consumes time that most of us do not have the luxury of wasting. What is so difficult about leaving one message with the vet that knows what is going on? Pure Laziness. Its so much easier for them to just hit a button and send me to whoever answers the phone. Before when I took my dog into the Mizzou Veterinary Health Center the two girls at the desk were so busy talking about wedding plans they ignored 4 calls. Which explains the numerous times I have called and received no answer. Very unprofessional. I am sure not all the assistants do this and I have just been one of the unlucky customers that received poor service. However the Health Center should really manage their employees better.

Dr Brophys skill, with the help of all her staff, ensured that my old cat flew through extensive complicated dental work, like a breeze. Now they have a total of 10 extra stars from me. Last year, My horse had a somewhat subtle and complex problem. Most likely he has equine Neuroaxonal Dystrophy. Using only the physical examinations of Drs Kramer and Johnson, I received a spot-on diagnosis and treatment plan. Both vets quickly recognized his subtle neurologic defects, without expensive testing. Very much appreciated. The testing is available if I choose at a later time . However as a clinician, and knowing my horse inside and out, I know their diagnosis is accurate. I feel like I got to watch 2 equine Geniuses at work. And all of the vet students and ancillary staff were highly professional and efficient. The barn was immaculate. What a wonderful learning experience for anyone who has the desire.10 stars!!!! Im a 56 yr old health care professional. This place is the saddest excuse for care, for its clients as well as for the owners. I rarely post reviews but felt compelled to after our experience here. Felt forced to go here as we needed a nuerologist quickly and they had one the closest of anywhere!!, this Dr uninformed us even after I point blank asked what side effects were of the medicine. He told us it was the safest drug, no side effects. After an initial ER visit, our 3 yr old healthy granddog came down with an infection in his paw that they refused to treat in the ER. We had to wait 4wks to see a dermatologist who turned out to NOT be one.. he said it was from that safe med and to stop it. Our dog suffered with biopsies and diagnosed with a fungal infection, we brought him back through the ER a few days later and they FORGOT to give him his heart meds that caused him to have a heart arrythimia! Due to THEIR lack of information of what this earlier med could do to him, an early diagnosis, and lack of administering his needed medications..we were unable to bring him home to euthanize him in his home and were FORCED to do it there. This is a terrible place to take your beloved pet. Im begging you... Take them to U of I aaanywhere But NOT here!!!

Our dog, Cooper, is an eater and usually manages to get out whatever it is that he eats, but this time he didnt. He had to have emergency surgery to remove a sock from his stomach. We were instructed by our vet to bring him here because it was after hours, and Im very glad we did. Cooper came home yesterday and is going well, Dr. Sihad (spelling?) and his team were able to remove the sock for less than was estimated and my buddy is going to live to eat socks another day! As for the reviews concerning cost/payment procedures...yes, its more expensive than if youre regular vet does it, yes they are upfront about payment procedures, but I didnt really expect anything less. It is University run, emergency service, and Im sure if they didnt have these policies they would lose out on people who bailed on their bills. I was upfront about my situation and no one was judgmental, they helped me work out a way to get it taken care of. Nothing but good things to say.

On April 7th, 2018 I took my beloved cat Tucker in to this facility because I thought he was in the last stages of renal failure, but it turned out that it was his heart. The vet was very kind, sorry cant remember her name and I made the difficult decision to end his suffering he was after all 17 1/2 yrs old. I miss my buddy so much! The thing I didnt appreciate was when they put me in a private room which was nice so I could say my finale goodbyes. I was only in the room for 10 mins when in walks a young man asking for payment. Really!! Im in my most vulnerable state right now and you want money this minute!! So I get my debit and credit card out and specifically tell him how much to put on each card. He comes back in and hands me the receipts and I am ticked off to discover after he leaves that he didnt even listen to me and charged my debit card $100.00 over what I told him and put the rest on my credit card. This made this month very tight. I asked them what they could do and they said sorry but they couldnt do anything. So yes, I agree this facility only wants money and some of the staff doesnt give a hoot about your emotional state.

It is unfortunate that they prioritize money and learning opportunities over patient care. I went here because my dog had, had five seizures in two-hours. When we arrived, we were taken back by how fast our dog was taken from us but, grateful because we thought that meant he was in good hands. The check-in lady rushed the signing process and made it clear that without payment there would be no treatment. At the end, she provided little additional options to how we could pay for our dogs visit, other than to take out a loan, and didnt seem concerned with the treatment we received from her colleagues. The doctor then tried to recommend the most expensive options even after we shared are many concerns with the cost of their services. She seemed to care more about using their many services then what was best for our dog. After we made it clear we could not afford the overnight stay she quickly said that the emergency medication was no longer available and did her best to provide no additional help. She was not clear as to what the tests she ran were going to indicate and she mentioned that her machines may have made errors after charging us $75 and then recommending we get additional blood tests. She could not answer several of our questions regarding why we would need several services from them specifically. We are advocates for student-teaching situations and the attending student seemed friendly and engaged but unprofessional. Leaning on the examining table and using a spiral notebook to take down information instead of a consult form.I would not recommend this service. My mother who was with me describes the situation as disgusting and cruel. It appeared in our case and in anothers case that night, that the staff were not willing to go to much length to help their patients. There main focus seemed to be about gaining/providing more opportunities/money for their school and students but at the expense of the animals and their owners, not for the benefit of learning.

So my dog later developed a rare fungal infection that literally ate him alive due to their negligence. ZERO stars. I was at this place for over 8 hours. I took my cat there a week ago after consulting with 3 other vets telling me he needed a PU surgery because he had struvite crystals that kept making him blocked. He had already gone through one catheter and to prevent more blockage he needed a PU. My vet called to tell them his concerns after trying to put a second catheter in and to get an estimate on the price of the surgery. They told him $1500. We got there at 6:30 pm he was immediately taken back. I filled out the paper work and was greeted by his vet. About an hour passed and a vet tech student came in asked me about his vaccinations. I told them I wasn’t sure as I do not usually take him to the vet but could get the records if needed (I’m a student my family took care of him while I was in the dorms) She walked away. 4 hours pass by and we are pulled into a room and told the surgery would cost about $3-$4000, because his urethra was scarred from the previous catheter they’d have to go in another way. I asked questions about maybe them stabilizing him and transferring to another vet. The costs got boosted to about $6000. I had made a tough decision to put him down because I could not afford it. She left to get the paperwork, after I decided I wanted his body to take home. She comes back 5-10 minutes later and tells me if they go ahead with euthanasia that they will have to send him off for rabies testing because he “apparently bit a vet tech student at 7 pm when stabilizing him” her exact words. I was told to try and find his tags or records (@11pm). No where is open, I am hours from home and do not have his collar with me, I find pictures of his tags, have my mom send me receipts and they told me it didn’t count. I decide I’m taking him home to take him to his vet in the morning to handle everything because they were so rude. They would not show me the alleged bite mark, they hid the girl in a back room instead of having her go to the hospital. After being told I could take him home with me, after an hour of waiting I’m pulled into a room with a new vet Dr. Patrick Hunt. He tells me I am not allowed to take my cat home or to another vet, that I have only 2 options and that is they will call animal control and he will be euthanized, or I can allow them to do his research study on my cat where he will be locked in a dark room with minimal contact to see if he can unblock himself. I told him the other vet said it wasn’t a good option because of his urethras scarring and that he’s been blocked for over 24 hours now. He is in critical condition and that he is an ESA and cannot be left in a dark room alone, it is one of his stressors. I was told that I was lying. That it wasn’t MY PETS stressor and that I was going to take my cat home to kill him by myself and hide his body. They refused to let me take him home to the point I had to call the police and then they told animal control I took off with my pet and didn’t pay even though I was standing in the parking lot on the phone with animal control without my animal because he was locked up in a room. They shaved both of his front legs, and his stomach for absolutely no reason. They stuck him multiple times with god knows what. Dr. Patrick Hunt SPECIFICALLY told my boyfriend the reason they would not release my cat was because they didn’t want to have to pay for the student to get rabies tested so they wanted him to die overnight in their care so they could chop his head off and send it off for rabies testing because they don’t have to pay for it. Just to let everyone know because apparently it’s not common knowledge, if your pet bites someone and you can’t get proper records they can be quarantined for 10 days OR they can euthanize them and they will chop the head off and send it to a lab. That’s what they do to your pets. These people do not care about your pets. Only how much money they can get from you. I took him immediately to a new vet after finally getting him released at 2 am. Paid $300 for his surgery and perfectly healthy.

I truly believe that if she could have been saved, they would have been the ones to do it. The vet was extremely compassionate during a very difficult time. Yes, it was expensive, but Im not sure what else you would expect for 24-hour around-the-clock care and treatment, not to mention the expensive equipment they keep on site to handle these emergencies. My 7 year old lab mix Quinn has been seen at MU’s Emergency Vet twice now. Once for possible poisoning incident when she ingested a bottle of my thyroid medication in 2015 and again today, February 2019, for after she experienced unexplained partial facial paralysis follows days later by a handful of terrifying seizure-like episodes. Both times I brought my pet to MU Vet myself and my pet were met with compassion, incredible bedside manner and I felt confident that the vets and students were true animal lovers.During this particular incident I took my dog to her normal vet who could not pinpoint the cause of her facial paralysis. I also saw a local emergency vet in Kansas City who seemed apathetic and concerned about money, warning me that they don’t have the technology to do CT and antibiotics likely won’t help. The outcomes from both OTHER vets were bleak, a lot of “I don’t know” and I was told very plainly and without compassion by the emergency vet at the other clinic in KC that my my dog likely had a tumor and was given anti seizure medication for her. I was brushed off many times when describing her episodes and when I asked if she may have an inner ear infection. I spent two sleepless nights sobbing on the floor beside her in total fear of another episode and in fear she had cancer despite her healthy appetite and otherwise normal calm and gentle demeanor.I called to schedule with a neurology specialist vet at MU despite having another neurology specialist closer in Overland Park. I got an appointment for her at MU in two weeks time, remembering how great my experience with the emergency vet clinic was in 2015. I ended up bringing her in on Monday morning an emergency basis as she did not seem interested in drinking water. I called ahead before leaving, was worked into the schedule and my dog was seen as soon as I arrived in Columbia. The assisting student on our case, Kate, was thourough and compassionate and had excellent bedside manner. I felt heard and understood by her and Dr. Honious. They took the time to ask questions, listen to my concerns, asked for my recountance of her “dizzy spells”. They also took the time to demonstrate to me how to put in her eye drops properly which I truly appreciated. I left today being told she likely had an inner ear infection... a point I did not raise today despite having previous suspicions because I had already been told to expect cancer and was treated as though my otherwise healthy dog was on death’s door.My dog was taken back after being petted by techs and the attending student. As I sat in the waiting room I watched students and doctors come out and greet patients and their pet-parents promptly and with genuine warmth. I watched dogs walk in and out of their oncology appointments with a charismatic man who seemed to know them all by name. It was the first time I let myself feel any shred of hope over the course of this otherwise hellacious week.MANY doctors and students, including the neurology specialist, saw my dog today. I left with a plan of action, a clear line of resources and an upcoming appointment date. I feel the most valuable thing I left with today was my peace of mind. I believe I may finally sleep through the night tonight knowing that today Quinn was seen by the best of the best. In fact, one antibiotic pill and she seems to have some pep back in her step.Care here was not nearly as expensive as I had anticipated and was less than half of what I had been quoted for in the Kansas City area. It is 100% without a doubt worth the drive to Columbia and I look forward to continuing to work with the veterinary doctors at Mizzou in regards to Quinn’s health. In the future, I will be returning for my other pets if need be and would certainly refer my friends and family to MU.

UMVHC gives you an estimate of what the costs will be BEFORE procedures. Keep in mind you are paying for EXCELLENT care and probably some complex medical procedures.Worth every dime to have Tuesday back to his old and loving self! The billing department went out of there way to work out a payment plan that would fit our budget.I HIGHLY recommend UMVHC to anyone with an injured or ailing dog / cat.

Horrible, horrible experience. Only come here if have bags of money. They will not operate even in emergency unless you have all $$ upfront, or approved through their ripoff finance company.

I cant function still after 2 months of loosing my beloved Jabby. I understand he was a 10 yr. old Boxer but they sent him home on Friday night of Memorial weekend acting like he was fine. I was there for 4 hours telling them he was not fine, was not breathing right and walked me out to the car and sent me on my way. I got to ST. Louis at 9:15 only to rush him to the emergency clinic at 10:15. He was dead the next morning. On top of all of this my mother in law was a major donor to this place. I spent a fortune there and I felt that I got treated like a fool. On top of this I cannot forgive myself for having him suffer unnecessarily. I have never had such a hard time getting over the loss of my pet. I have loved them all but this is inexcusable. I have had so much pain and suffering over this and cant seem to get over it. I will never take another pet there. I felt like I have spent thousands there for nothing. They called me and asked my what they could do? I dont know what to do. They should tell me since they know so much. #sadderthansadWell here it is March and Jabby has been gone 9 months. Things are no better and I am not any happier with the University. I get that it is a teaching hospital but it is also for emergencies and they have left dogs in the hands of interns that are not capable of taking care of them. I see people that have taken their dogs there on Holidays. That is a big problem. I feel like Jabby being there at the beginning of Memorial Weekend was a huge downfall. They were anxious to go celebrate Memorial weekend with their family and sent my dog with me on a trip from hell on Highway 70 to St. Louis for me to rush him to VSS and have him die there because of their lack of knowledge at Mizzou. I wish we could all get a class action suit going but its Mizzou so we would probably not win.

These greedy money grubbing people arbitrarily decided that the cat we brought in during regular hours was an emergency visit even though nothing about the visit was life saving or even an emergency they just wanted more money
