They charged us $100 for installation fees. The tech was almost 4 hours late and spent over 2.5 hours setting up the service (on a saturday). A couple months after we started our service the monthly rate went up $10 without previous notice. We would have internet problems every other week, and when I contacted costumer service they didnt know what the issue was and, after leaving me on hold for 45 minutes they hung up. If you try to cancel your service it will be an almost impossible task and they will charge you again for some fees. Would not recommend at all, even if it seems like a better service for a lower price, the price will eventually increase and the service will not be that great.

Great customer service at RCN in Chicago -- any time I called there was a representative that was knowledgeable, helpful and kind (also fast working). Their internet (via fiber optic) was always consistent and reliable! Fair/competitive prices and great service. Additionally their website/account management was easy to navigate. Happy to do business with them. and would recommend to anyone in the area.

I like RCN, however, the billing is ridiculous. they decide to keep the increased price is small lettering on the last page of the bill for your last promotional statement which is not only unconscionable, but when you call to ask why your rate is increasing 20 dollars for the same exact service you had for 2 years now they say theres nothing you can do. I will be switching if they decide to not offer their customers who are loyal and currently with them rates that accommodate the fact they are sticking with RCN. An increase to $20 dollars every year is ridiculous.

If you are really interested in my experience with RCN, here it is. The wiring and installation went smoothly. The installers were helpful. However, my phone, now serviced by RCN, has no busy signal and I have difficulty turning on my TV with the RCN remote. Hopefully, RCN will correct these problems.

The technicians were always very nice and the installation was great. Weve had them for 12 months and the actual speed was pretty good. However, the price hikes are outrageous. First it was $15 for it being a new year, and now they want to increase it even more because weve had them for 12 months. So, even though its supposed to be no contract, it basically is considering the price jumps multiple times per year. Very disappointed because I actually wanted to keep them. I will be switching internet providers now.

Worst customer service! I moved to a new condo last month. Since the building has a contract with RCN and internet services are included in the monthly settlements, I started the RCN service. When calling RCN to obtain the Internet service, the customer representative opened my account and directly scheduled a technician visit for me. She said there would be no charge for my Internet service. However, they neither inform me of the $79.95 technician visit fee nor inform me of the option of picking up and installing the equipment by myself. I felt very surprised and disappointed when I suddenly received my bills. It was not acceptable for this kind of communication. Nobody likes the surprise of charges!

I never post bad reviews, but my experience with RCN was extremely unprofessional and horrible. I was relocating and had to set up an account over the phone. Because I needed an earlier install date I scheduled for their earliest appointment available leaving me almost a week in my new place with no Internet. At the scheduled time of my appointment no one showed up. I called RCN and they told me that I had canceled the appointment, when I have an email confirming the work order and never received a notification of my supposed cancellation. When I called a different representative they told me I didn’t pay the deposit on the account which I was never aware of since I booked over the phone and the representative never asked for payment. I did not even receive an email or phone notification about a payment being needed. I would have easily paid this deposit with simple communication on their part. I would recommend going with any other provider in the area.

I signed up online for service installation for Saturday morning. They never showed up so I called them and they said I was scheduled for the following Saturday. I pulled up my email and confirmed that the date was correct and it was. I shared the email with them. They then told me the problem was the online booking system, which allowed me to choose the date and sent me a confirmation email, was not correct, and not synced up with the actual scheduling system. I asked how I was suppose to know this, they never emailed only confirming the date. After wasting my entire Saturday morning, they couldnt do anything to fix the problem. I told them to forget it and I will go with another company. I as truly shocked it was possible to schedule my appointment, and get confirmation email for it and then told I should have called to schedule not done it online...like why have that option?

WORST SERVICE EVERRCN disconnected my internet, cable, and phone 10 days ago. Then, they left a message (on the phone line they disconnected) to tell me there was “noise” on my line and I needed to call to schedule an appointment for a tech to come out to reconnect my service. When I discovered on my own that my services weren’t running, I called and was told the first available appointment was 9 days away, but they promised to try and “escalate” my call to get someone to come sooner if possible.Nine days later (escalation was ineffective, apparently), the tech arrives and says “someone disconnected your cable at the pole.” Took him 2 minutes to plug it back in and all my services were restored. Hooray! The very next day, I saw an RCN truck in my alley behind my house. I turned on my television, no cable. I picked up my phone, no dial tone. I tried to access the internet, no internet service. As I was putting on my shoes to go tell the tech he’d just who unplugged my services (again!), he drove away. I immediately called RCN (on my cell phone) to ask them to get the tech back to plug my service back in. Surprise! The customer service people you talk to on the 800 number literally can’t get in touch with the local dispatch people. The only thing they can do is schedule an appointment for another tech to come out and the next available appointment Is 8 days from today. But, they promised to “escalate” my call if possible to try and get a tech here sooner, if possible. (Ha! I’d heard that line before.)Oh, and the best part is that while I was on my cell phone waiting to speak with someone, RCN actually called the line they’d just disconnected (for the second time) and left a message telling me I needed to call to schedule an appointment to have a tech come out and reconnect my service because there was noise on my line. You can’t make this stuff up.I’ve been an RCN customer for 21 years. As soon as I can schedule an install from another provider, I won’t be an RCN customer anymore. Also, they “reward” their most loyal customers (like me) by jacking up your prices consistently over time. I was paying $400 a month for internet, cable, and phone service. It’s almost like they’re daring me to drop them. Challenge accepted!

We were hoping RCN was better than past experiences with At&t and Comcast but unfortunately, all 3 are exactly the same and a product of an industry trying to survive.I called to resolve 2 issues, one being a $20 jump in my monthly bill. I spoke with Damon and while he doesnt make the policies, he could sure use some training on empathy and not talking over customers. He conveyed part of the increase was due to my equipment rental charges increasing. I stated that I didnt receive new equipment, and my existing equipment isnt performing any better, so why would pricing increase. He chuckled and said its the price of doing business, and that everything increases in every business. I explained that from an economic standpoint, this was incorrect. Interest rates dropped and now people are paying less for mortgages. Car insurance rates often decrease with good driving performance and customer loyalty. Its not Damons fault, hes in the line of fire for a company in an industry that doesnt value customer loyalty. He explained my pricing will continue to increase unless I leave and go to a competitor, and then come back.In essence, RCNs customer loyalty program is to increase your pricing on an annual basis while not increasing service or value received, until you leave for a competitor, and potentially come back. The lesson in all of this is to be ready to jump from one carrier to another to take advantage of their first year gotcha pricing...as Damon described it, and then jump to the next, unless youre find absorbing increases for no better service.

Every time they have told me it was being installed TODAY. This is a lie. Its a moving deadline. The last few times they supervisor tried to make it out like I wasnt being realistic with the scope of the repair needs (mind you...my downstairs neighbor has had service the entire time). They dont prioritize anything...instead choosing words over actions. Since Im no longer in state I cant return the equipment, I spoke to three more customer service reps who could not help me, or even provide any written assurances that I had no other hidden future charges waiting to bite me. I lived in a tiny studio, was given an additional piece of “extender” equipment I didn’t need but was charged for (luckily one of their tech folks came out and recommended I have it uninstalled, but told me he’d be fired if they found out he told me that). I had spotty wifi at best, again, in a tiny studio, which went out regularly and their tech support would either ask me to restart the modem or send someone out to “test” the equipment. They charged me for someone to come out to test their equipment that didn’t work, and the technicians (through no fault of their own) always found that the Internet speed was just fine, which it was not. I paid for the premium package, which was anything but, and was regularly told that my computer or phone were likely to blame. They also upped my monthly payment from $79 to $99 in the first year, without reason or warning. I switched to AT&T when I moved to a 2 bedroom. They have an answering service with people who blatantly tell you lies to get you off the phone. They could give a care less about their customers. Weve been without internet for 2 days now after hours of lies. Switching to AT&T

BEWARE: DO NOT USE RCN CHICAGOAs a former Xfinity and AT&T customer (Ive been in Chicago for 10+ years), RCN is one of the worst experiences Ive ever had with an ISP. Im paying for 1gig internet speed and their suggested 1gig equipment upgrades, yet I average around 50-75mpbs and have tons of packet loss. We thought it would be temporary and we could live with it, but its been OVER A YEAR of this horror. I have a job that requires good internet speeds and I have had so many issues because of RCN.Horrible internet service with even worse customer service. When theres an outage and you call customer service about it, they will lie to you and say its your fault and they will need to send a tech out for $55. When the tech arrives, they just tell you their doing re-wiring in the local area and youll experience slower speeds for a few months. When you call customer service for a refund or some sort of credit for this, they will promise you refunds and then send you on a wild goose hunt or false promises of someone contacting you about it - youll never actually receive anything (Im willing to bet someone will comment on this review saying that theyll make this right. They wont). We recently switched to 5G and its a night-and-day difference from the normal ISPs, we will never be going back. You can get it in any apartment in Chicago, no restrictions or need for a tech to rewire the home. Hopefully 5G will wake up companies like RCN to improve their services and customer support.

Im currently just crossing my fingers that what the representative was looking into for me (to see why my internet has been going in and out all day) will be remedied by the time I have to work tomorrow. After waiting half an hour to speak with a human, I finally got in touch with one, but our call was dropped prior to finishing what was being looked into.HOWEVER, the rep that was helping me was super personable and before I even brought up my second concern (my monthly bill went up a lot), she noticed it and addressed it. I didnt catch this reps name, but she is wonderful! Easy to talk to and her good energy was infectious...making my wait time not feel as long as it was.I just hope my internet and bill situation are good to go as Im not much in the mood to be on hold waiting for a human again!

Absolute garbage. I am on the phone with RCN on almost a monthly to dispute erroneous charges. Most of the time they waive the charge but say theyre doing it as a one-time courtesy and refuse to actually take responsibility. Its extremely frustrating. They deny any requests for additional credit or discount for my trouble. How are you doing me a favor by crediting my account when I never should have been charged in the first place? Im not even exaggerating, I have this fight with them at least every other month.

I’m here to give a quick positive review for RCN!! As a lot of folks know, most people who come online to leave reviews only do so when they have a negative experience. But, I just got my RCN router and service installed today and it was a great experience. It’s running great and the technician was very punctual and helpful!

RCN is the worst internet provider I have ever used. We are currently on day 3 of no internet. Every time we call or message them on Facebook, we get a different response -- at first, it was Theres an outage and were working on it, then they said the outage was resolved and it must be our equipment, then it was that the outage was ongoing but they didnt know if it was being worked on or what stage of the process they were in. Customer service just tells us to power cycle the modem/router or book a service appointment for days away. RCN needs to give customer service agents more info and more training, it needs to inform users when there are ongoing power outages, and it should apologize for multi-day outages, particularly during a pandemic when everyone is working from home.

My experience for service installation and set up was excellent, all technicians were prompt, practiced social distance and wearing masks. Each of my 3 technicians explained in great details about our business services. I was happy with the on site preferences. The customer-service reps when you call RCN to request business phone services need more training. I finally got a good customer rep after 2 weeks of calls. He completed my order request and made important changes that lowered my cost for services. His attention to detail saved me money and got my order request for services moving for installation. We hope to have a better service experience with customer service reps as we utilize RCN Business Services for our business needs.

Made an appointment over the phone to have a service person come out to the house and switch out the cable box. Made arrangements to stay home from work and no one showed up. Called RCN and was told my appointment was never put into the schedule... this is what happens when you don’t choose your cable provider in an apartment complex, you just become a number. RCN please work on your customer service.

Find another company - steer clear of this one. My daughters moved out of their apartment and returned the equipment. RCN insisted it was never returned. I asked them to check serial number on equipment to see if it was processed. They said they couldnt do that - never gave a reason. So I just paid the $125 lost equipment fee to end the matter. This was all after being on hold for 42 minutes and then on the phone for another 27 minutes. Luckily I took a picture of the check before I mailed it and also of the bill. A month later we received a collection notice with my daughters name on it. After another 34 minutes on hold I finally spoke to someone at the collection agency who cleared my daughters account. He said it is cleared on his end but I should check with RCN. Just called them - a computer told me the wait was 54 minutes. Trust me - DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THIS COMPANY! You will regret it.

Ive always had a lovely experience with RCN; theres been a few times where Ive had questions or problems with my bill, and each time Ive been able to call and theres been a very helpful person on the other end to help me figure it out! Im very glad theyre my service provider.(If I have to gripe to show this is real, the last time I called, it asked me to state my issue, and it didnt recognize my voice after saying billing five times!! But then I was able to just dial a number and it was fine. Might want to check on that system 😅. Once I got to a person, they were super transparent, timely, and friendly!)

Painfully slow internet with constant outages. The cable is extremely slow as well especially when trying to connect to an app(netflix, prime, etc) horrible customer service. Be prepared to wait for over an hour to speak to someone and then not be helped at all. I wish my building had a contract with another provider. RCN continues to raise rates with poor quality cable and internet.

My internet hasn’t been working for multiple days. I’ve had technicians come to my place to replace the routers look at the cables, and give me guidance, however nothing has resulted in a successful internet connection for more than a couple of hours. The wait times to speak with an associate are extremely long and unhelpful. I couldn’t be more frustrated with the poor product and service that RCN has provided me.

Do not do business with RCN. Speed is slow as a turtle. If internet works for 1hour, next 3-4hours it doesn’t. When I called customer service representative said that they are working on it, but nothing has changed. Today I called to stop working with them , I was on the line more than 15min no one replied. Also price is too high it doesn’t fit the quality. Never suggest RCN. Can’t wait to change to xfinity

Worst experience ever.First off, the service was always so so for the 3 years that i had them but that i not the problem.Last month when a city truck tore my line down leaving me with no internet they did absolutely nothing. They informed me that they contract out the company that does the outside wiring and that MAYBE in 3-5 days I would get a call from this contracted company to set up an appointment to assess the damage and then that company would set up another appointment to rewire me. They used the excuse that corona is affecting the companies time frames for getting to service people over and over again. Its march 2021, not 2020 that excuse is not as strong as it was now.3 days pass. no call so I call RCN again and ask to speak to a supervisor. Supervisor says the same thing. I just have to wait.3 more days pass (6 days total offline when I run a decent-sized company out of my house that i have done so for the last 6 years) So I call again. Same thing.A total of 10 days pass and I am done waiting. I go to Comcast they had someone out to my house in less than 24 hours to rewire me and have me back online. Now 20 days later I see I have been auto charged for the time that I had no internet up to my cancelation day and that they have charged me for the equipment. that I have only had the label for 11 days to return it as they have no return center near me.And yes. maybe 11 days is a little long to return the equipment but they took no urgency towards my situation so I took no urgency towards returning their equipment. After just getting off the phone with them they are crediting me back a whole $12 towards the bill during the time I had no internet. They said once the equipment is returned they will send me a check. SEND ME A CHECK!My money should all have been refunded. I lost money from my business being offline those days. I am high risk and can not just go galavanting around in the world right now. This company is absolutely ridiculous. I can not believe that they did not even care to rewire my internet but are more than fast to just start charging me for things when it has not even been 20 days since the service was canceled.I say do not ever use them. Comcast is not exactly known for being the best either but at least they have the power to fix issues when they are down and have enough centers that if you need to return something you are able to do it close to you and not have to drive 45 minutes to do so.I told them well this should work both ways if you guys got to use the excuse that my internet line could not be rewired to my house because of corona can I not use that excuse since I am a disabled woman who is immune-compromised? So getting to your far-off land return centers and standing in line with multiple people before I get my vaccine this weekend did not sound like a great idea. But no apparently it doesnt work both ways and well less than a month is enough time for them to charge you for the equipment.Bottom line this company is garbage. do not go with them. all these companies are garbage so at least go with one of the ones that has some manpower backing it.

RCN overbilled me for the full month amount of $108 rather than the pro-rated amount (service is supposed to end on Feb 7 but I was billed for all of February). When I asked about the breakdown of this bill, the customer service rep could not explain why the bill was for $108 and put me on hold periodically for 30 minutes. She then hung up on me during one of these holds. When I called back I was put on hold again.Do not use RCN as your provider unless you literally have zero other options. They will hide fees and accidentally overbill you multiple times as has happened to me for the 2 years Ive used their service.

It’s good internet and good prices sure, but don’t expect to be able to call them for anything you need. The robot voice on the support line (I know I know, all phone support lines are awful) said there’d be a 34 min wait, and then somebody picked up almost immediately. Great! But then the call got disconnected somehow, totally dropped. And I lost the guy. I called back, there was a wait for 34 min. This time I did wait. I waited 49 min before I hung up, couldn’t stand that horrible hold music anymore. I still have to call again later, I’m just sort of burnt out right now. Thankfully I’ve got the time, but I can’t imagine the pain of the average customer who’s in a time-sensitive situation. The internet service itself is definitely better than AT&T, but if you’ve got problems of any kind, you’re not going to get these people on the phone.

Do no and I repeat DO NOT sign up for services with this company for ANY reason! This is the worst service I have ever had! There isnt just one thing thats bad, everything is! The representatives are rude and dont know how to do their jobs. I had to tell the representative today where to find the information on MY bill and how to explain it to me as I listened to his baby cry in the background today. I maybe wouldnt have minded if he wasnt being so rude. He still didnt take care of the issue, mind you. This company charges for EVERYTHING! Their own technician told me not to keep one of the services because I would be grossly overcharged for channels that I could access through the internet for free so I decided not to keep the cable. They still charged and continue to charge me for it even though it was NEVER activated on my account and I can not seem to get a person competent enough to get this issue taken care of. However, they did tell me for only $54 dollars, they could have a technician come back out and pick up the box they left here. I have frequent outages with the internet services. When I say frequent, I mean at least 3-4 each week! When you call about it, expect to wait on hold for at least a hour just for a representative to not know how to properly troubleshoot and suggest sending out a technician that...you guessed it...you have to pay $54 for! They tried to charge me for a technician to come out, one of the times, and check my services when in fact it was an area wide outage. I dont know how this company stays open but Im willing to pay ANY amount just to be rid of them! This service is disgusting!
