Great equipment variety and sanitation equipment. Staff is polite, just dislike how some needed equipment depending what Im working on is out of commission due to rotating allowable equipment for SD purposes. Its pricey but worth it. Only caviat is I dislike needing to pay an additional membership to leave my child. So it kinda limits me and my wifes workout.

Rushed Out. A rude employee interrupted and stopped my workout so they could make sure I was aware they close in 15 minutes when I was fully aware. They turned all the lights off 15 minutes prior to coming to tell me also. No patience and wanting to rush people out before posted closing time. I pay a large amount compared to other gyms (55$ more a month) that are open 24 hours... unacceptable.I called the number as requested and asked to speak to a general manager. I was told THEY ARE NOT THERE AND THEY ARE ON VACATION. I was told it was UNFORTUNATE that I would be told to call but they are not there and wont be for some time.Thank you for wasting more of my time for absolutely no reason.

The gym is ok and all but seeing people use the sauna to dry theirs clothes is disgusting. Makes the room smell really bad and it’s just an unpleasant sight. There are dryer located outside the room for this particular reason.

Great fitness experience

I signed up for the gym membership yesterday and this morning I went to the gym and they said my membership was not activated yet and would not let me workout even though I showed them I signed up the day prior and I was told I would be able to workout today. I pleaded with the guy to let me workout because I do have a membership and I just took my preworkout and my hotel’s gym was closed due to Covid and he still said no. They definitely lost me as a customer. Would not recommend!

How do I cancel my account for this company? Ive called several times over the last couple of months and no one called me back. They continued to charge my bank account. And Carlos is going to continue to charge my bank account, although I have made formal notification that I no longer live in the area. Someone received the many messages I left and ignored them. Now its costing me the monthly membership fee and an additional 100 dollars. So, this will go on until someone acknowledges the messages and the request to cancel the membership. Is there someone the in corporate office that assist. The local management is insistent that they did not receive my messages and they are in the right to charge me for March and continue to charge me.

Just got signed up today. The membership guy Tyler was really easy going, explained details well, gave an excellent tour, and was really likable. Top notch customer service. The facility is clean, and has a chill atmosphere.They feature a juice/shake bar, a nice lobby, every weight setup and machine you can think of, and very clean locker room with sauna. The kid zone is pretty cool, with a full schedule of activities and friendly staff. None of the kids in there looked less than happy, so another plus for the busy parent!The sign up process is streamlined and easy, featuring mostly a digital format. They have have a discounted military membership, which is nice. Yes, you can use it if retired with the DD Form 2 (Retired ID).All in all, I’m excited to start working out here, since as a disabled vet I’ve kind of let myself go (by my standards). There are people of all ages, shapes, sizes working out there happily. So no worries if you aren’t a gym rat. The only gym rat types I saw didn’t appear stuck up or self absorbed and were quick to toss a wave or a bro-nod.

Myself and my wife have been members for the past 5 years, due to the COVID-19 we decided to put a complete gym in our home. I have never had an issue and have always loved the service given at this location along with others. We decided to cancel our membership due to this continuing COVID-19 situation and I went into the gym to complete this process. The front desk was very helpful when calling Mr. Tyler to the front to assist me. Once I was in the office with Mr. Tyler, sad to say that I have never in my life been so disrespected and spoken to like I was beneath him. He was rude, disrespectful, and borderline if not unethical!! I know one apple can not spoil a bunch, but this young male need consideration of others training, along with ethics training.

Very maintained as compared to other American Family Fitness facilities.

One year in I have to update this review. I went and got my group ex certificate after I had been in conversation with the group ex Manager Kris about teaching a hip hop dance class. After many conversations, she finally told me that Hip hop does not have a place in her gym because of her clientele. Theres only one way to take that. They only cater to old and white, which is sad because there are young brown people giving them $100 plus each month. Most members are nice and they have some really nice staff, but I could not continue with a gym that is openly discriminatory. I hope all people of color read and cancel and or find another place to workout.

As a long time member of American Family Fitness (10+ years), I give 5 STARS(⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐) to all AMFAM locations. I currently visit the Chester location several times a week, and I must say every time I walk in that door, I am greeted with many smiling faces. Thank you for always helping me to feel welcome and appreciated!🙂

This gym is always clean and well maintained, seems brand new. Have every machine I could possibly want and a large, open, weight area. My kids enjoy going to the gym and spending time in the Kid Zone. The Kid Zone staff are the best! Always greet my children by name and take good care.

I love this gym. So many amenities. And the fact that the facility in colonial height stays open 24 hrs is superb! At times when I have too much on my mind and cant sleep, I hit the gym.

This gym has such a great atmosphere. The front desk staff will greet you when you come in and tell you to enjoy your workout. The locker rooms are very clean and there is always an employee in there cleaning. I like how the women’s sauna is separate from the men’s. The gym isn’t overcrowded, so I can get in and finish my workout without waiting to use equipment. Employees are also always on he floor wiping down equipment and keeping weights organized. Lisa and Aprell are amazing individuals and have wonderful personalities! They were very specific about membership details and fees. I have nothing to complain about!

Let me start by saying how much I like American Family Fitness and have been a member for over 15 years.The Associates at the desk are always polite and professional and the instructors are very knowledgeable and make everyone feel comfortable.This gym is the closest to me , However this is my least favorite gym in the Richmond area as it is not 24 hours and I almost always go at night .Most disappointing is that it does not have a pool.It also feels a bit tight and smaller then other AFF.

Fantastic clean and lots of machines

I love this place I’ve never had a problem with the staff. Also my 5 yr old daughter never wants to leave the kids area because the activity’s, so personally that’s more important for me that they have a good daycare staff. I’m there to lift weights maybe get a shake and leave not be catered to it’s a gym.

American family is far and above my favorite gym. Been a member since 04. Ive tried a few competitors but its just not the same. In some environments my intensity is seen as intimidating and theyre not appreciative of it in staff or clientele. In others its just not comfortable with long wait times for gym equipment and a dirty atmosphere. Its got the perfect blend of personal freedom with variety. 10/10.

Definitely the best maintained gym I’ve ever been apart of.. this location is the “smallest” but it’s still huge! The memberships are up there so you better be dedicated!!! But all worth it! Thank you AMF!

The gym is like all franchises nice equipment, nice building. Tasha (dont know last name) is the absolute best associate, she is friendly , kind informative and I love her classes and all the trainers are nice friendly people. Thank God . Also cleaner than most of them. The general manager on the other hand is the absolute worst management I have ever came across. That gym stands because of some good employees. She is not a leader, she is never helpful, seems to not know anything always has to get back with you. I am going to try out Golds

Amfam Chester is very clean and organized. The staff is friendly, helpful, and courteous. The equipment seems to be well maintained. Ive never been so happy at a gym before!

As a disabled vet I submitted paperwork in Sept to cancel my member due to back issues...Im told I need 30 days notice so Nov would be the first month it takes affect...Nov comes and the debt is withdrawn from my account...I ask about it and get told I cannot cancel within 90 days of the end of my contract...fast forward to Feb and I get a notice saying I owe $300 for returned payments...come to find out they never submitted my paperwork...then never sent me any notice about a delinquent account and allowed me to check in with out telling me I was 300 in the hole...they refused to accept responsibility saying that I did not fill out the correct form (because their untrained, UNKNOWN, employee failed to correctly answer my question) although I have a written notice from my doctor at the Veterans Admin.I still had to pay $150 for fees when in reality I was due a refund for November on because their negligence prevented the correct cancelation of my membership

Hours are a terrible inconvenience. Golds highest membership is half the price for better hours and overall equipment. They sacrifice customer service such as child care to save on expenses when they charge more than double than other gyms in the area. Shameful to say the least.

Very nice gym, and I like the atmosphere. They have a decent selection of smoothies, a sauna, and plenty of equipment for cardio and weight training. My only gripe is theyre not open longer on weekends, but thats not a major bummer overall.A star is lost because Ive called before to reschedule an appointment and the girl who answered was impossible to deal with. I understand the gym is noisy, but for Gods sake how do you get everything I say backwards? BACKWARDS? I said 243 and she said 342. Even after numerous corrections, you still say everything backwards. Its not the gym, its you, because the second person I called heard me just fine.Aside from that incident, its been great.Update...My personal trainer, Adiva, was amazing. Very knowledgeable and awesome to work with. Also, after my complaint, Ive seen people wiping down equipment way more. So kudos to the gym!

Went online to get a free day pass to check out the facilities since I just moved. Have been getting phone calls, emails and texts harassing me! Definitely not interested anymore.

Nice gym with friendly staff. Membership is definitely over priced and you shouldnt advertise that youre a 24 hour gym when youre really not open 24/7. Closing time on Friday/Sat/Sun is too early.

So insanely OVERPRICED for monthly memberships, not to mention a maintenance cleaning fee?!Nothing resonated American or family with those prices.They need to be legitimate and on the level with LA Fitness :$35 monthly memberships to ANY club nationwide with a $15 a month kids club fee. Used to be very clean, comfortable, and equipment in great shape. I had them at 5 Stars. I have been a member here in Chester since 2011 when they first opened. No longer. Equipment is no longer being fixed in a timely manner. TVs on some of the treadmills and ellipticals no longer working.We are charged a yearly fee for cleaning yet they were closed for 3 months and no cleaning was being done but they wont refund (pro rata) for the time they werent cleaning.Customer service is very, very slow (you must freeze or cancel you membership online ONLY. Customer service wont help with that. Ive been trying to cancel my membership for weeks now without any reply. Next step is the Better Business Bureau.This used to be a good company and great workout place but they have let their customers down. So sad.

Variety of machines gives me more options to choose from. Love the fact that there are still late evening classes in Chester for people like myself who get of at 6. Facility was nice however I hope one day they will put in a pool for me and my kids. Swift creek is too far to go at 7pm after getting off work. Personnel I felt was okay. The director on shift was great, however my cousin told me that there was an employee following him throughout the gym on our visit Monday 12/2/17. I dont know why, but I told him maybe the employee was stereotyping and being cautious because he had exposed tattoos. Hopefully that doesnt happen again.

I’ve been coming here for nearly 3 years now and I love it! Awesome (addicting) classes, it’s actually most of what I do when I visit which is roughly 4 times a week. “Power” is an excellent intro into learning your way around a bar + weights and incorporates all muscle groups and it’s still perfect when you’re wanting an all over, all muscle group, work out. “Fight” is perfect for incorporating HIIT into your regimen, you also learn proper technique and form for self defense and martial arts. AmFam Chester also offers a ton of yoga classes, barre, etc. “Family” is definitely what I feel like when I check-in, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so connected to a fitness community before; the instructors are personable, consistent, FUN and have even become close friends and fitness companions. This place is definitely the BEST part about living in Chester.And of course, super clean, visually appealing facility. Super easy check-in, you can also use their app on your phone if you’re keyless like me. Locker room is always pristine and fellow members are mindful of others and friendly!

I love the diversity of workout options at the different locations. I can use the equipment, the Group X, water exercise, sauna, steam room, whirlpool daycare if I had a little one. Itis truly famil oriented.

Have been with this Facility since 2012 and have always found the facility and Staff Exceptional! The recent addition of Mariah to their Staff couldnt be better...Great Personality and Always Friendly!

There are a lot of classes available. All of the machines and t.v.s are always working. The facility is always clean.

Ive only been to this gym once or twice because it just has an old feel to it and is apparent in the locker room, as well as, the gym. I just do not like the feel of this gym. The membership is the same at this gym as it is at the other gyms and the equipment should reflect that.I was extremely disappointed to discover that the bikes had not been upgraded in the cycle class. I only came to this location because it is closer to where I live. After riding the color bikes for a while at the Midlothian gyms, I was not about to ride the regular bikes. What a waste of my valuable time!Update from 2018 (my apologies, never got around to posting) - after being burned out from driving back and forth to Midlothian and noticing some new and later claases at this, I decided to try it again my last 2 weeks of membership.With the exception of the bikes, the weights appear to be in excellent condition. I havent used them, but I have observed them and the machines in passing to the classes. The weights in the group class also appear to be in newer and in better condition than the all of the other AmFam gyms I have been to and I have been to all of them in the area, from Colonial Heights, Midlothian to Richmond.Although there are signs posted regarding no cell phone use, people are still using them, especially in the sauna, blasting whatever! 🤨 Havent come across anyone rude enough to talk on the phone in the sauna, but Ive only used it a few times after the class.Overall, this AmFam appears to take better care of its facility than the other ones, especially the sauna; it is by far the cleanest. There was no black stuff/ mold underneath the benches or around the foot of the benches.

Great place to workout and get in your zone. Only wish they had more times for younger kids to use the basketball courts.

This is place its OKAY! they dont have a pool and the gym is pretty small compared to others gym. I went to a yoga class with an instructor called Fernando and it was VERY BAD! He doesnt connect with the members in the class AT ALL! He kept saying good job, good job and he wasnt even looking at us to see if we were doing it correctly, he was looking at himself. I felt very awkward inside of his class because it seems like he is there to do his own exercise not to teach yoga, I really enjoy Maria and Ruth classes though.( There is a lady that works there, but also work out there and she is always caring a giant bottle of water, I have seeing her making bad comments/laughing about members )

Smaller gym in the AmFam Family but has good amount of machines and weights.

Spacious and lots of equipment. Even when its busy I can still get the machines/weights I want.

Upsides: Friendly front desk staff. A few very personable instructors (esp. Heather and Maria). Clean facility. Adequate parking.Downsides: This particular location is very overpriced considering they never added the pool (a promise which was the only reason we joined 1.5 years ago), no indoor track, limited group fitness classes and times, and no womens hand weights unless you can slip in to grab two while a power class is in session. (I belonged to Golds on for years for much less $$ and they even had a theater.) It annoys us terribly that AmFam thinks wed want to drive 20-45 minutes further from home to use one of their other locations.Unfortunately there arent many gyms in our area, since many Chester area families either cant afford or choose not to fork out $75-$95 per month for 3 years (and personal trainers are extra).

Great overall facility with state of the art exercise equipment and excellent selection of classes. And the only downside is a lack of pool.

The members are very friendly and it makes it easier to focus and get my workout in!
