Signed up online for a state inspection but upon arriving they said they were booked up and it would be a few days. Said we should have called to set up. If thats the case then take it off as an option for online sign up. Said they have a list and call you when they can see your car. Who does that? Sounds like they really dont want to to do them. Guess they will be happy when Virginia removes the requirement.

My dad is a mechanic here so I am obligated to say that it is a reputable place. Having said that, There are definitely worse Auto Shops to go to in l Charlottesville, your car will most likely start after going here, so give them a shot

Stereotypical small town mechanics, act like something is wrong and try to charge you $1000 for something you dont need. DO NOT GO HERE THEY ARE JACKING UP THE PRICE FOR NO REASON.

Chris is a delightful man. These folks are so wonderful, hard working, honest, and just all around good people. The check brake pads light came on in my Range Rover, so I took it in. Greg looked it over and called me up and said that the brake pads were in good condition and didnt need to be replaced (sensor needed to be reset). He could have taken advantage of me but they never do; they will get all of my business and if you are smart youll give them your business, too.

Their web page says they do emissions inspections in Charlottesville and explain what is it etc. When you get there they simply say that they do not do emissions inspections because it is not required in that county. Why to have a misleading advertisement then?

They are super nice and professional! I got my oil changed and an inspection done. They found some issues with my suspension and fixed that. When I got it back, I noticed some noise whenever I would break slowly. They had be bring it back the next day and they fixed it for no charge! Such great service and everyone was polite and helpful. Highly recommend!

I walked in for a state inspection without an appointment, was told there would be 1.5 hour wait, had my car done and out the door in 2 hours, which is awesome. They were courteous, true to their promise of timely service, and I found them giving excellent service to all that came in, including answering their phones in a timely manner. These guys are honest and dependable, never advising unneeded work, and always offering a fair price for the work they do. My father has been taking his cars there for regular work as long as I can remember, and I plan to do the same.The one issue is that these guys are pretty much always busy. If you just need an inspection, be there right when they open at 8 and theyll fit you into the day, or you can call them and make an appointment for something more, but expect it to be a few days, maybe even a week, before they can fit you in.

Audi check my low tire pressure warning this morning and found a screw in my tire. They suggested I go down the street to Total Auto Service to have them patch my tire. The guys at Total Auto Service are amazing! They are kind and very good at what they do... and fast! I highly recommend. I will be using them for all my tire needs moving forward.

The people here are nice an friendly. They tell you exactly whats wrong with your car. Like the fact that they work with you on trying to fit your car in even when they are crazy busy. Awesome people!

Very friendly people, they checked out my car two days earlier than they thought theyd be able to, and they ended up recommending a much simpler fix than I was expecting (and would have paid for). Seriously some of the most honest / helpful in the business. The dealership across town tried to overcharge me and do unnecessary work. I had Chris take a look and tell me how to get repairs done much more cheaply / that some werent even necessary.Theyll even guide you to the best place to get certain repairs done even when it means they arent the ones that repair your car. Theyre only concerned about getting your car repaired correctly and for a fair price.Theyre a bit busier now than they were when we first came to Charlottesville, but I can tell you its because they do quality work and they care.

The custom exhaust work had done was terrible, pipe was kinked not bent to the same angle as the truck, the welding work looked like a child had done it. Then on top of it they broke my drivers door handle and I had to buy a new one. Do not recommend.

Total Auto Service (formerly Tuffy from long ago) has taken care of our older cars for many a year. Did not use them for awhile because we bought new cars but now those cars need service. Chris (owner) and crew perform quality work, with reasonable prices in as timely a fashion as possible (they are very busy because they are trusted).

Excellent prices for muffler and tailpipe replacement with a lifetime warranty. I haven’t had to wait a long time for scheduling appointments, and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly.

I dropped my car for inspection this morning at 10 AM. Chris told me 1-1.5 hours. I left and came back at 11:35 and the car hadnt been moved from where I parked it. No apology or explanation. I collected my keys and left. Dont waste your customers time, Chris.

This man is one of the most honest mechanics Ive ever met in my life and I travel around the country picking up vehicles for workI came from Birmingham Alabama up here to Charlottesville Virginia to pick up a vehicle that had was reported to have a blown transmissionI went through every single other transmission mechanic on Google in Charlottesville Virginia all ridiculous prices and not very friendly I already had the transmission with me he looked at it told me the truth that it was a leaking drain plug in only needed fluids and seals gave me an awesome priceif you want a fair honest mechanic who will not rip you off Reggies the man to see thank you so much Reggie next time Im in Virginia picking up a car you were the mechanic Im coming to see

Yearly inspections are a first come first serve bases and they will point out any issues if found, show it to you and explain your options. They are very professional and honest with their prices

Friendly customer service, but do NOT go to this place for a car inspection!!!!! They tried to tell me that I needed a new muffler and a front motor mount and failed me. Tried to charge me almost $800 to have it fixed there. Luckily I have an amazing mechanic who was able to do it all for me for $250 (parts and labor included)-- however after he took off my front motor mount, he showed me that there was actually NOTHING wrong with it. He almost put the old part back in, but because Id already bought a new one, he just went ahead and replaced it. Also my muffler was cracked on the outside, but there was nothing internally wrong with it and it was functioning perfectly. Anyone else would have passed me, but they were out for the money. Too bad for them, I was not planning on having my work done there and will NOT be coming back for an inspection. To top it all off, while we were picking up parts at AutoZone, a stranger in line told me they did the same thing to him when he got his car inspected there! They have a legacy of trying to get over on people, apparently.

Seriously the nicest people ever. I had a new exhaust system put on my Subaru Forester, and they were totally cool about it.. No judgement like I expected there to be. Really nice and down to earth people.

I needed my muffler repaired on my Nissan Versa. They were close to my office so I called and got an estimate. It was good enough so I scheduled an appointment for after work. They needed to do a little more than they thought because my muffler was in worse shape than we thought, so it took a little longer (they had to weld it instead of using screws). I figured this would cost a little more as it not only took longer, but as I said, theyd need to weld and that probably isnt cheap. The end cost was about $4 less than the estimate. Total time in there was 1 hour 40 minutes. Thanks for the great work.

Being a 25 yr old female coming in by yourself to a car shop is usually daunting. Tuffys was the first excellent experience I have ever had taking my car in. I came in for an oil change, tire rotation- and general 70,000 mile check up. They were very honest with me and didnt take advantage of me clearly not knowing anything about cars. The oil change prices are great and did my check up for free. They told me honestly that my car looks great and really wont need any specific maintenance until about 10-15,000 more miles. I really appreciate that they were so nice and not pushy at all. I completely trust them and highly recommend you go to them for any car neds!

I took my van in for repairs. Ive been using Tuffy for a couple of years and had no problems, but this time they charged me $414.43 to fix my brakes, rotate my tires, change the oil, and fix the power steering belt. THEY DID NONE OF THAT. They did not put oil in the engine after changing the oil. It was bone dry when I checked it the week after (it sat in the parking lot at my office for a week). The power steering failed 24 hours after the visit. I took it back, they put fluid in it and it failed again 24 hours later. Because there was no oil in the engine the engine over heated and the heater core blew....another $325 in labor and $90 in parts to fix that at another shop. Thats when the mechanic told me the brakes were ALL BAD...FRONT AND REAR. They never fixed the brakes! They NEVER rotated the tires. THEY never fixed ANYTHING they charged me for. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE service. I even brought them a bag of sausage biscuits from the McDonalds next door that morning when I dropped the van off because Ive not had problems before and I liked and TRUSTED them!! How STUPID of me. But Chris was home that day and the service from the people there was HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. Im so angry I could spit nails. You BETRAYED my trust, wont give me my money back and youre costing MORE money trying to get this resolved. DO NOT USE TUFFY SERVICE CENTER EVER!!!! They USED to be good, but theyve crossed over to the dark side.

I have been a customer of Tuffys for 7 years. I have had minor work done there, like oil changes, and major work done, replacing a timing belt and everything in between. Every experience has been positive and the work has always been done correctly the first time. They always let me know what work should be done then and what work will need to be done in the future. I have 174,xxx miles on one vehicle and 161,xxx on another and both have been maintained by Tuffys. I will continue to use Tuffys for all my automotive needs and will continue to recommend them to everyone I know.
