I am a former homeowner at High Country Vacation homes. They have stolen not only our money but money from our quests. We have left over 20 messages for them and they refuse to return any calls. We have been lied to over and over again and now see that they have all no homes that they represent. There MO is to always blame the other person but never take any accountability in what has been done. Its a good thing that this business is shut down because they would just continue to take peoples money under the pretense that the home is available to rent. What ever you do if you see a home that shows this company is representing them please do not book from them.

If you booked via AirBNB - beware. Booked in August for 10/7 check in drove across the entire state of TN and over the smokies to find out High Country does not exist anymore. Called them over and over zero communication and zero consideration. Its almost an hour past check in....

BEWARE!! I reserved a property through this company for 10/1-10/3. When I arrived at the check-in time, the property was being gutted/renovated. The property owners were there, and informed me that they recently purchased the property and had made multiple attempts to contact High Country Vacation Homes to make sure any future reservations were cancelled, but had never been able to make contact with the company. I tried calling the company multiple times that evening to their after-hours number and left several voice mails, but have still never got a response. I also sent an email to them and received an auto-response that their office is now closed and they are unsure if/when they will re-open. They have also removed all listings from their website. I have not received any response from them about refunding my reservation.

Within 10 days of our arrival, these folks canceled our reservation. They only had one property left, so I had to take that one. Now THE DAY of our arrival I cannot get in touch with anyone to get directions or a passcode. Do not rent from these people. I have called 50 times today, left numerous messages with the answering service and no one has returned my call.REVIEW UPDATE: The owner of the home we rented contacted me directly on Monday after seeing that our reservation had been canceled. He wanted me to know that he had moved his rental unit away from High Country Vacation Rentals because of their terrible customer service and that our reservation was one of the last he had on the books with them. He wanted to make sure that I had not been charged. He seems like a super nice guy and Im glad he has chosen to move his business elsewhere.UPDATE after BUSINESS RESPONSE: I cannot seriously believe they are throwing the answering service under the bus. To clarify, not only did I call the answering service but I also called the after hours number that the High Country employee gave me that she said would go directly to her, multiple times. The answering service called both the on-call person and the on-call person’s back up person. I bet the answering service folks are happy not to have to deal with so many angry, frustrated travelers renting from High Country Vacation Homes.And, they didn’t offer to pay for my stay in Blowing Rock, they offered to credit me for a one-night stay with them. Given the situation, I had no confidence in anything they said and didn’t feel like giving them one cent.To top it off, they’re actually blaming all of this on covid? Check the reviews, folks, this isn’t covid. It’s terrible customer service. Had they said, “We are super slammed and are understaffed due to covid…,” maybe I would have been more charitable. But, not returning one single phone call? Nope. Had they returned my call somewhere in the span of the 7 hours between my first call until the time I was supposed to check in, I would have likely given them the benefit of the doubt. As it stands, I would not trust one single word from these folks.On the other hand, the Holiday Inn in Blowing Rock gets 5 stars.

Awful experience. They cancelled our home shortly before our stay saying “this property is no longer available for rental.” If we would have cancelled so late they’d have charged us for our full stay! To make matters worse they offered us a few other homes to replace our original rental saying they wouldn’t charge us more. Comically, all of the homes they offered cost significantly less. What a joke business.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE - DO NOT USE We had a variety of issues with our rental home and some that were urgent (given bad directions, gas smell, electrical issues, hot tub leaking, etc) and had to leave messages with an answering service and no one ever called back. Sent emails that were also ignored. Even days after we left, I continued to call, email, sent a formal complaint, not a single peep from these people. I reached out to the homeowner who was horrified by the experience and even she could not reach anyone. This rental company is quite literally the worst group of people. Do not rent from them.

High Country Vacation Homes is amazing to work with they were responsive, friendly and knew a lot about the home we rented and the area!We stayed at Eagles Landing and the whole time our family kept saying “unbelievable “! The house was amazingly clean, had ever piece of cookware you could think of. The home is 5 star decorated with personal touches throughout the home. The hot tub was great, the electric blinds in the living room are incredible, beds are super comfy. We rented ATV’s and had a great time. We never did leave the Eagles Nest community.Thanks again for a great amazing stay, we are already planning next time!

I had an issue with a vacation rental. Left several messages on a Thursday night at 7pm on both the office and after hours number. Did not receive a call back until Saturday. They claimed they didn’t receive a call. I sent them pics of my outbound call logs to prove.They also falsely claimed they told me to bring a 4x4 not the “SUV” they said on the phone on our initial call. They claimed they had “ notes” that they said 4x4 but for an company that fails to call back for 2 days after multiple messages, I doubt they are so organized that they have notes of our call.It’s unfortunate because the house we rented was beautiful and not owned by High Country.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIGH COUNTRY VACATION HOMES!!Absolutely AMAZING!!!!! We had the best experience and stayed in the most beautiful house in Banner Elk. The views were amazing and there is nothing better than looking out your window and seeing all the wildlife in its natural setting. The house, Eagles Nest at Eagles Landing, had everything you can ever want, including heated toilet seats, an additional ice maker, and the best game room ever!!! We had all the wood we could ever want for the firepit and didnt have to worry about running out during our smores and stories night. Our kids LOVED the ATV adventure and had a blast roaming around Eagle Landing.Karen and the team from High Country was fantastic to work with. They were extremely responsive and ensured our stay was perfect. I cannot recommend them enough. The family and I had an outstanding time and cannot wait to visit again soon.

Unfortunately we missed our cooler at the property during the check out on Monday July 6th. I called the main office number to ask if someone could be there to pick up the cooler and preserve the food it was inside. Surprisingly nobody could help me. I was told I would need to wait the cleaning company that was scheduled to go 4 days after the checkout. Now, Friday, nobody gave me a call or anything about the cooler. It’s sad that some companies are only looking for profit and forget about small things that makes the difference in terms of customer attention. I will call again today to try to get at least an answer. Poor service. Do not recommend.

Made a reservation over Airbnb for a home in Banner Elk back in November before Covid for my family to meet for my fathers 90th birthday. Because of Covid, my father did not wish to go up to NC. I canceled my August 21st reservation by phone in May and was told I would receive a refund. I received only half of the cleaning fee and the company still owes me $700. When I wrote to them over Airbnb, they responded by telling me I would have to go to Airbnb for the remainder of the money. When I was finally able to reach Airbnb, they stated they contacted High Country and they would not release the remainder of my deposit. So nice over the phone only to find they are slippery. Be ware.

High Country communicated great during our reservation and check in process, and the stay was hassle free. Our cabin, Rustlers Ridge, was sheer perfection! It has been renovated and decorated since the pictures were added to the listing. The home was impeccably clean and well cared for and the furnishings and little touches were luxurious, down to the fluffy cotton balls in the counter containers. The kitchen was stocked with every amenity we needed (including two crockpots!) and we were able to cook, eat, and drink to our hearts delight. The three levels, two decks, three bathrooms, and five beds make this home perfect for large groups or families. The location right outside of Banner Elk, NC makes it accessible to all of the attractions and hiking trails. Everyone in our group fell in love with the space, we will definitely be back!

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! Rented a house for Labor Day weekend. Arrived and there was a huge sinkhole 15’ from the property no one mentioned even though they said it’s been there for 3 months. They had nothing else available to rent so we’re heading right back down the mountain with 4 kids in tow. SAVE YOURSELF & go elsewhere!!
