I highly recommend this shop. Their communication from the start was prompt, and I actually spoke with a real person. They quickly identified the issue and fixed it at a reasonable price. They were very generous with their time and explained to me what was wrong in detail. It was truly a pleasure to work with them.

I would NOT recommend due to there price gauging. $800 to do diagnostic test and replace a starter in 2005 Matrix. $500 more than the dealership. The owner gave me a discount of $200 after I complained. What could I do my car wasnt running and in their lot. I would say sweet talking customer service as they dig deep into your pockets. Too bad, thought it would have been my go to mechanic. SUPER DISAPPOINTED. GREED IS UGLY!!

Just moved to the area and having issues with two cars I recently bought and was extremely worried about finding a good auto repair place. Rods auto has shattered my expectations!! They were the most professional people I have ever dealt with. Not only were they able to tell me exactly what was wrong with my car they even has a system to actually show me photos of what was wrong and even texted me a detailed report of their findings... amazing. Most of all I am an anxious person when it comes to this stuff and they were able to speak to me in a way and explain the issues in a way I could actually understand which was very comforting. As long as I live in the area I will never take my cars anywhere else. Shout out to Brittany, Shaun & team.

I have never been more favorably impressed with an auto shop than I have been by Rods Japanese Auto. The work done on my moms 2010 Subaru Outback by Zach was impeccable, thorough and careful. The mechanics were transparent explaining and photographing what they recommended, so I really understood what was being done. This shop went out of their way to fit into my schedule and generously provided a loaner car. The office staff is friendly, professional and honest. I felt like i was working with my neighbors and they really cared about my safety and satisfaction. I came to Rods Japanese Auto for a second opinion -- dont make my mistake, come here first!

I recommend getting a second opinion from another ASE shop or dealership before approving anything. Update: I just got my car serviced at the dealership and they told me my transmission fluid was dirty and needed to be replaced less than 3k miles after Rods did it because Rods used the wrong fluid (red when my car needs blue). Normally its replaced every 30k miles. They also told me Rods didnt clean the throttle body when performing the de-carbon service and fuel injection cleaning. The dealership redid these services for $200 less than what Rods charged me and told me my strut/shock absorbers and PCV valve are fine, contrary to what Rods stated.

Had my fuel pump replaced here, located under the back seat. When I got the car back, I went to grab something in the back floorboard, I put my weight on the backseat to lean down and the back seat came loose - I found the nuts and bolts in the floorboard. They replaced the fuel pump but forgot to put the rest of the car back together. I called them and told them but never received a call back. This was a $1000+ job, given I had them do a tune up and a dye test. I would not recommend going here if you want your car back in one piece.

Rod’s is unbeatable. I’ve been going here for a few years now, based on a friend’s recommendation. There are a lot of great things to say, but the best by far is their customer service. I’m not sure how they do it, but they remember everything about me every time I come in. They know my name and can pick up a conversation we had months ago. I really appreciate the extra effort they put in to give that kindness.Another quality I appreciate is their detailed reports and debrief after service. In a simple oil change they have a full report of my car to share with me. They walk me through it and give me a suggested plan of what future work to get done so I don’t have any surprises. Also, with a few simple fixes they’ve even suggested doing it myself (to save money) and showed me how to fix my car.Without a doubt, the best auto shop I’ve ever been to!

The electric door lock on the front passenger door of my Toyota RAV4 quit working a few weeks back. So I called Rod’s Japanese Auto and spoke to Brittney. She helped me set up an appointment to have them diagnose and fix the problem. I brought it in on a Thursday night. Friday morning they inspected it, then contacted me about what needed to be done, and gave me an estimate. I authorized them to do the repairs. By 4 pm Friday it was done. I went back and paid for the fix. It was about $647, all-in. They did an outstanding job; very professional and knowledgeable. Plus, while $647 is a good size bill, it is about $225 less than the dealership would have charged for the exact same repairs! So, if you need to have work done on your vehicle, and you wanna save money, give Rod’s a call. You’ll be glad you did!

I have never had more transparent and amazing service done on my car! I had a laundry list of things wrong with my car and I took it in to Rods knowing it was not going to be a quick fix. They worked with my schedule, had wonderful customer service, and everything was incredibly transparent. They send the diagnostics to you, which include pictures and personal notes from the technicians who work on your car. Any questions I had, I was easily able to reach them and my questions were answered in great detail. I was fully able to understand everything, which is wonderful to me as I know little to nothing about cars. I dealt with Zach mostly and he was absolutely amazing in answering any questions I had, and the communication was fantastic. I even got to drive around a fancy loaner car for a couple days! I will recommend Rods Japanese Auto care to anyone and everyone. I left feeling confident about my situation and zero stress! Fantastic work!! To add, I have never left a review on anything ever and I was so impressed with the quality of service I wrote one...so if that doesnt say anything, I dont know what will.

Im very happy with my experience at Rods. For starters, I appreciate the thorough (complimentary) inspection they perform before any repair. While there might be some sticker shock at first, I like to know everything that could be done to improve the condition of my car. As we went down the list together, I was given helpful advice about what repairs needed to be prioritized, and why. We decided on what work was most needed and what fell within my budget. The day before my appointment, my ride fell through. I called Rods to see if they had a loaner available, but explained it wasnt a big deal if not since it was short notice. Later that day I got a call saying the loaners were all booked, but theyd arranged a complimentary rental car for me!The work was finished on time and came in under the quoted estimate... no complaints there! My car is running great and feels fun to drive again. Its nice having the peace of mind that its running smooth, and knowing that Rods has my back if any issues arise with the work I had done. This shop might not be the very lowest bidder in town (I thought the pricing was fair regardless), but I believe you get what you pay for. The professionalism and willingness to go above and beyond for their customers says a lot about this shop. To Zach, Brittany, Jeffrey, and everyone else at Rods- thanks, Ill be back!

Pretty clear the mechanic, JS, had no interest in working on my car. They claimed they are Honda certified and told me my car was leaking oil everywhere yet couldnt identify, or communicate, that my main seal was the issue in my car. Included in my very detailed write up was an air filter that has under 4k on it, Struts which were very recently replaced (the lack of rust proves that), and some overly alarming fluid changes because they dont know the history of the car.The Honda dealership was able to locate and fix the source of my p2646 check engine light as well as my main seal in under 4 hours for less than Rods quote for simply a new VTEC solenoid.I am giving Rods two stars because Zach at the front desk was a great communicator and provided me with a loaner vehicle. I am overall disappointed with my $175 inspection which would have been free had I just gone to Honda to begin with.I asked for a very clear task from Rods and just received the run around as a response. bummer

Worth every penny. If you really care about your vehicle, and want service that reflects that.... Rods is the place to go.Following a 5 day nightmare with another shop in town, I called Rods and was greeted by Zach. After telling him what I had just been through and how my suzuki grand vitara was behaving, he assured me they would take care of me and get my car back in top shape. I dropped my car off that day and instantly felt more safe and comfortable with these guys than any shop Ive ever hired. They did a full inspection with detailed analysis , photos and suggestions , for free . After confirming the EGR valve was likely the source of my vehicles rough idle and hard start, they took the intake manifold apart, replaced all the gaskets , cleaned the EGR passage tubes and replaced the faulty valve. My car is now running better than it has since Ive owned it.The entire process was smooth, Zach is extremely kind and personable. They truly want their customers to be safe on the road and can be trusted 100% to do the job right. I could go on and on about my experience.Thank you Zach and the team at Rods.10/10 would refer my mother and everyone elses mother.

After a great initial conversation with Zach, we took our older RAV4 to Rods to check out a chirping noise in the engine. The dealer had already replaced a part but the chirping got worse and they suggested another costly repair. We decided to go to Rods to get a second opinion on the cause. We were so impressed with the thorough assessment they did, including photos of various parts of the vehicle, what looked good and what needed attention. They identified the cause of the noise (the alternator was wearing out) but also found a few other things that needed attention that the dealer did not flag (including struts and shocks that were wearing out). Zach discussed everything with us in detail, including things they felt we could hold off on for now and we felt they were very honest with us. They replaced the alternator and did other services. It was not inexpensive (!!) but after 100k miles, weve needed very few major repairs to this point. It is now running great--no chirping, smoother ride, quiet engine. We are looking forward to our next 100k.We appreciated they level of communication, thoroughness of the inspection of the vehicle and, so far, the quality of the work. Zach was great and a great representative of the business. In sum, we think we have found our new go-to service for our Toyotas.

Took my car in for a simple brake job, got a quote back for $1100 saying that calipers, rotors, and pads all needed replaced, on top of the $150 inspection... I let them know that the car was a temporary driver for me and that I didn’t want to dump a bunch of money into it, just wanted it to be drivable. They insisted that replacing everything was necessary & when I asked about cheaper options they were pushy. Took it to Les Schwab and they told me that I was getting swindled. They changed the pads and resurfaced 1 rotor for $280. There was also a leak in my fuel tank that I needed fixed, have contacted them 3 times after my $150 inspection trying to get a quote, each time “we’ll email that to you right away”. I have heard nothing back. Waste of $150. If your not looking to get upsold I would try one of the many other great shops in Bellingham.

We had an awful experience here. We came in to get an oil change and everything looked over before a small road trip down the coast. At this point, we had our car for about a month, and almost everything was replaced 100 miles before we bought it. We had 0 issues with the car- no check engine lights, no overheating, no leaking, nothing- and we are very vigilant about checking the condition of our car after a bad experience with a car being totaled in a very remote area of the Yukon.I have no qualms about the oil change that was performed, that was fine. My issue is with the list totaling 8000$ of needed repairs that was given to us after. Like I said, this was for a car that had everything replaced 100 miles before we bought it. The woman working went down the list with us, telling us all about the things that needed to be fixed and how her shop would do a better job than anyone else, discouraging us to get a second opinion. Nevermind the fact that half of the photos on the inspection she gave us were blurry and hard for us to see, which she admitted to as well. She even tried to claim very obvious defects, such as leaks, which we had NEVER seen before with this car.My wife and I, obviously very upset, went outside to take a minute to discuss what to do. Given that the price of repairs cost more than what we bought the car for, we decided to tell her that we would not be booking any future repairs as we would be trying to sell the car. Immediately she had a change of tune, and suggested that we SUE the place we bought the car from. She even gave us contact info for the attorney general(obviously not understanding that an attorney general is not for the public). She seemed almost scared that she would get caught doing something she shouldnt have been doing(such as falsifying repairs that needed to be done?) as she pushed everything onto the person we bought the car from, who was a reputable, locally well-known used car dealer. She couldnt have gotten us out of there faster, but not before telling us to drive with the heat blasting as the car could overheat any second, to which our reaction was WTH? since like I said before, we had never had a SINGLE issue with this car.We drove home(without the heat blasting) and as to be expected, had zero issues. We talked to some friends and family members who worked as mechanics and they were all shocked and surprised. We ended up getting the car inspected 3 other times by multiple different mechanics and they all said the same thing: This car is perfectly fine! We even gave the 8000$ list to a mechanic who looked at everything side by side and told us that we were clearly being scammed, which was what our conclusion was as well. All of this occurred in mid-June. We have since driven the car probably ~5-7000 miles without a single issue. We lived in a rural area of Whatcom County and drove on average, 75-100 miles a day between driving to work, running errands, etc. The kicker to it all: We just got finished a 2000 mile road trip back to our home state of Alaska. Not a single issue.

My truck basically broke down in their parking lot. so I left it there over the weekend and they looked at it on a monday morning. the person that called me back seemed friendly and helpful enough so I figured even though they werent my preferred shop I would pay them to diagnose the problem. they did a cooling system inspection they got back to me with a quote to fix the problem for $458. So to avoid the hassle of having it towed somewhere else or to my house to try to fix it myself I paid the money. so I picked up my truck and the receipt showed it was a $21 dollar T and $23 dollars worth of coolant and a whole lot of misc labor related/consumable charges, whatever fine at least its fixed right? for about an hour that is! (25 miles after repair).ah then the thermostat sensor started going crazy and I called explained to them what was happening. the guy on the phone was nice enough and said bring it in so we can look at it. so the following Monday I took an hour off work and I had my wife drive in from our house to pick me up from their shop and take me back to work assuming this would be a free check of their work. but once I got there I was informed they would need to do an additional cooling system check $112 fee for that service. I said didnt you just do one of those to find the problem that you said was going to fix the truck? to which her response was yes but now it could be something else, my technician drove it after the repair and it was fine. at this point I basically said Thank you and walked out before I said what was really on my mind, which Ill keep to myself. I will say this, I would NEVER take my vehicle there again and I would advise anyone else against it as well.

Took my car in to have an engine light diagnostics run and to have my A/C recharged, but I was charged over $800 dollars for non-work. Upon handing over the keys they told me that it was $70 for the diagnostic and $170 for the recharge. They called me an hour later saying they think I had a loose wheel bearing. The person on the phone was unsure of what the mechanics were doing to my car, but she told me they would handle the wheel bearing, the A/C, and the engine light for $700. Seems reasonable. The diagnostic cost me $270.46 and the recharge was $318.68. They charged me 476.85 to FIND the wheel bearing that was loose, but never actually fixed it. On the estimate it says they fixed the bearing, but when I was, in person, picking up the car they said they never fixed it.They also tried to tell me my transmission was leaking. Leaking so badly that after an hour of being in their shop they had puddles of transmission fluid on their floor. When I tried to leave they told me it was unsafe to drive to get me to pay for the fix. Extremely shady. It has been 2 days since I took my car away from the shop and I have seen zero puddles under my car. I have tested my automatic transmission fluid levels and they are above the lines.Rod Japanese Auto is a scam, in my opinion. I wanted an engine light checked on a 15 year old car, but instead I was charged way too much for zero work to be done on my car. I sucked up the price because what can I do? I got scammed. But they did say it would cost $892. dollars to fix right drive axle, that made the noise. I took my car in to another auto place got a second opinion they said Rod made the wrong diagnostic and replaced a front wheel bearing for $435.00 dollars that fixed the problem.Went back to Rods for a refund of $90 dollars for making a wrong diagnostics. They said they needed their mechanic to put their stethoscope on the car, before refund. My truck broke down and they fixed it immediately. It cost way less than I expected. They also gave me a detailed maintenance report with pictures. My friend Ryan recommended them and I was glad he did. I highly recommend them. This was the best experience Ive ever had with an auto shop.

The shop gets one star from me only for their expeditious and thorough inspection of our car. I took in our Rav4 for some exhaust work (broken hanger) and was expecting them to only look into that issue. Instead, when I signed the form, they did a complete inspection, even though I said we just had it in for service. The shop emailed me a very detailed quote for around $4000. This included a whole assortment of work not even remotely related to the exhaust issue. For example, they said we need new shocks and struts based on the cars mileage. They didnt seem to worry whether they were actually worn out. As far as the exhaust issue was concerned, the LEAST amount of work they were willing to do was replace the entire exhaust system, from the engine on back, for $1200. They refused to fix anything less than that. I left the shop, having paid for an inspection, without resolving the broken exhaust hanger.I took it over to Midas on Meridian where they were more than happy to accommodate me and come up with a solution somewhere in the middle. Got the hanger and pipe replaced for a lovely $175.

Five Stars again. This rating has to do with followup and honoring warranty.I had a part replaced recently, turns out it was defective, as there was still a leak.I called in to let them know it appeared to still leak, they got me in the same day. The Techs inspected everything, sure enough, the part was bad. They had the new part delivered in a short amount of time, installed quickly, inspected it again. And I was on my way. They honored their warranty! Its really nice to see a shop stand by their word!Best part, I got fresh chocolate chip cookies while I waited!

I still plan on taking that warrior on plenty more family vacations and Rods will help me do it. I did get very friendly service and understanding that I didnt want to do everything at once. Rods is a great shop! They are so accommodating, and they dont just treat you like another customer. They like to explain what work they are doing on your car so you can learn and understand. They work fast and efficient. If you need to leave your car there for a bit they will drop you off/pick you up or loan you their loaner car! Their office is very inviting and welcoming! And they have awesome employees! Ive been coming here for four years and I couldnt be happier to find an awesome shop that does amazing work at a good price! You wont find a better shop in Bellingham! Keep up the great work!! :)

I came to Rods Japanese Auto as I felt my previous auto care company was lacking the care of customer service. The entire team did not disappoint and far exceeded my expectations. Without hesitation they offered to provide me transportation to/from my workplace and in no way made me feel like I was burdening them by asking for such. I love that I was able to view my vehicle inspection electronically before discussing next steps with them, and that they were helpfully willing to work with me in prioritizing service needs within my budget and plan for future service. The cherry on top was the basket of local goodies left in my car, and the two friendly shop cats! I highly recommend the exceptional auto AND customer care of this establishment.

A-1 job on my 2000 Honda! Im just now realizing as I think about the bill/report and the online reports + our several conversations, that Rods doesnt just provide car service but also owner education. Theyre way ahead of the average owners knowledge about their own car even well before its in the shop and are eager to teach the owner as much as theyre willing to learn. One good example for me was the need for new tires. Who wouldda thought? Good tread = good tires, right? Wrong. Rods told me to look it up so I did & got an education, but the photos really drove the point home - cracks aplenty!Another happy point - I forgot to mention the dash warning system said my brake light was constantly on. At least I thought thats what it said, but they found the brake light bulb was out & replaced it.Im especially glad they found the pesky problem thats been plaguing me for years - the unnerving left front clunk on backing out of the driveway and the marbles in the nonexistent hubcap noise with every little road bump. I guess they were related because theyre both gone.

Some of these reviews seem a little outdated. Ive been working with Rods for over a year now; Brittany and Logan are incredible and have always given me excellent, transparent pricing along with friendly service and fast turnaround times. Most recently I had to get the engine swapped in my 1997 Civic - they were able to get the parts and have the work done the weekend before Christmas so I could drive home and see family. They even gave me a loaner car which saved me from having to walk everywhere around town in the freezing cold. I cannot recommend this shop enough!

Everyone was polite and easy to talk to, I left my car there while they checked my car out to find what the problem was. Not to long after I left I received a email with pictures of my car and a safety inspection they did pointing out all the things that needed attention, this was part of there service , no charge. The next morning they contacted me and explained what the problem was and estimate to fix it. I thought the cost was high but after checking around it was in the ball park. I had them go ahead and fix it and picked the car up that evening. Jeff was vary good explaining everything to me and I was satisfied with everything they did. I did mention to add the $25 discount to first time customers and they did.Pat

Hi -- I am a 1982 Datsun 280ZX. My owner loves me so much she takes me to Rods for everything. She is very discriminating (Ive only had eight mechanics in my 36 years.) and demands only the very best service for me and my aging parts. Rods has taken excellent care of me each and every time, always professional and thorough. I recently needed some electrical surgery and Rods took great care of me . I feel great, almost like a kid again. Rods -- you are the best. Love, Little Red Z.

I generally dont trust other to work on my car. Brought in one of my vehicles to Rods, they treated it extremely well. Im very satisfied with the work, so much so that I recently dropped off a different vehicle for more work. They are slightly on the more expensive end, however that is reflected well on their work. Wouldnt go anywhere else in Bellingham for maintenance of any of vehicles. I love to support local businesses such as Rods, you can definitely tell they care about your vehicle.

Today 03-25-16 I brought in my 2008 Scion TC to get to get transmission fluid changed. The customer service rep Brittany along with Logan were courteous and professional. Throughout the whole maintenance process (that took no more than an hour) I was constantly updated via email with the vehicle inspection results *WITH PICTURES* and what needs to be done/replaced in the future. I have never been to a shop that did that! You know they are not there to rip you off or lie about what needs to be replaced. Id recommend this shop to anyone I know and I look forward to doing business with them again.

I have been to Rods twice and had great experiences both times. The employees are friendly and kind, and give clear explanations of their work.I appreciate the fact that I wasnt pressured to buy anything extra when I got my oil changed and they gave me a great diagnostic sheet that lets me know how my car is doing and what might need to be replaced in the near future.Their lobby is comfortable and cozy which is really nice when you have to wait for work to be done, and they also gave me a loaner vehicle when I had my car worked on the first time.I also love that they donate a percentage from their oil change profits to a local charity of your choice. How cool is that?I dont know much about cars and am a little intimated to say the least about taking care of my car and dealing with car troubles but they put my mind at ease and dont use scare tactics to try to get an extra buck.If you need work done, or even just an oil change, I highly recommend Rods Japanese Auto Care.

Rods Japanese Auto Care is honestly the best repair shop in town. My Subaru which turns out to be kind of a lemon, has had many issues that have taken multiple trips to fix because it would not display the problem all of the time. Rods team always believed me when I said it was acting funny even when it wouldnt do it for them. They tested my car and drove it for weeks until it displayed the issue and finally fixed the phantom problem so that I know have a reliable car again. While they had my car for weeks they provided me with a loaner car which was extremely nice of them with no extra cost to me. The staff is so knowledgeable and friendly, I trust them 100%. Thank you so much Rods!!

I was attracted by all the positive reviews and brought my toyota in for an oil change and a knocking sound in the engine. They called me about 4 hours later and said, we finished your oil change and, um, you need a new engine. She went on to tell me how lucky I was because they found an engine for only $4,400 when it would usually cost $4,800. I honestly thought she was joking. She wasnt.I asked why I needed a new engine - did they learn something about the cause of the knocking? They replied, Oh, we cant figure out the cause of that sound, but usually it just means you need a new engine.Okay... I guess thats what mechanics do at Rods.It was nonsensical because the car is only worth about $2000. Why would any reasonable mechanic suggest such an expensive repair on an old car? Needless to say, I paid for the oil change and never went back. Months later and the car is still running fine. I would recommend getting a second opinion if you go here for repairs.

Brittany welcomed me to the shop, explained the work to be done and why, told me about how long it would take. After the work was done (in the time she told me it would take, of course) my car was once again running beautifully. After getting differing opinions of what needed to be fixed on my 2004 Honda pilot, I went to Rods. They were amazing. Super helpful, and knowledgeable. They walked me through everything, and helped me come up with a plan to fix my car as it turned out it needed more work then the other two shops had indicated in the first place.
