My wife and I have been using Mr. Shelby to perform our tax returns for 4 years now. Initially, when we started, I thought his price was a little high. So, I looked around for several months for another CPA / Tax Preparer. I interviewed two other firms. We decided to bring our returns to Mr. Shelby. Even though the cost was more than the other firms, his tax knowledge impressed us.I am so GLAD we made that decision!!! Mr. Shelby has ALWAYS had our back when it comes to taxes, and, he’s VERY personable! Over time, I’ve come to think of Mr. Shelby as more than a CPA. In fact, I consider him to be a dear friend.This may not be the case for everyone – but, he’s increased our returns substantially. And, he’s done it with ethics and integrity. In other words: If it is within the law, he will get what’s owed to you! Over the years, I have discovered through our conversations that he knows the “TAX LAW” better than anyone I’ve met! In fact, I suspect that his tax knowledge might be better than some tax attorneys. He’s got a huge depth and knowledge for taxes, including foreign taxes! He answers our questions fairly quickly. But, if he doesn’t know it, he’ll tell you. But fear not, he’ll research it and get back to you.As for me and my background, I’ve had some sophisticated returns in the past. I used to own 4 rental properties, a business in IT (Information Technology), and an AMWAY business at the same time. I used to process those returns myself. I sold those Rentals and shut the businesses to enter a very successful and demanding career in IT. I retired from IT around 2013.When my wife and I returned to Maryland 5 years ago for her career, I started a Car Service business to make some extra funds. At that point, I decided that I did not want to perform my own Returns. Part of my gig was doing Uber, which was very controversial at the time. Plus, the Tax Laws have become so complicated! I didn’t think I had the knowledge-base for it anymore.

My taxes got a bit more complicated a couple years ago, and I decided to stop doing taxes on my own and find a firm to help me. I interviewed a couple private offices as well as the local H&R block, and Mr. Shelby was by far the most professional and he is just generally a kind man! Im glad I decided to choose his firm to help me. His office has prepared my taxes for the last two years, and Id recommend them without reservation to anyone.

I give five stars, hands down! Everyone in the office is friendly, overly helpful, and patient. Truly, everyone! Mr. Shelby really cares about his clients and goes the extra step to be sure you understand everything and are getting what you deserve.

Mr. Shelby has been doing our taxes for quite a number of years. We certainly prefer using a professional CPA with the expertise and knowledge that we have experienced here. Any problems we have had, even later in the year after tax time, have been handled efficiently. The office staff is also very pleasant on the phone and in person. I came to Mr. Shelby with six years of back taxes. Assuming the worst, I was quite surprised when he told me everything would be just fine. He was able to work some magic and squared me away with minimal damage. Also, I noticed the office was way more comfortable than any H&R Block Ive ever set foot in. I give 5 stars to Mr. Shelby! We sold our house in Baltimore in Jan 2018. Because we were out-of-state residents, the state of MD withheld 7.5% on the entire purchase price (yes, unbelievably, as if the cost basis of the house = $0). I filed a MD non-resident return in March 2019 to get my refund ($12,000.00). However, they never processed our return, even though I have a certified receipt that they received it. Being non-resident, we were about to give up and let MD treasury rip us off for $12K, when I instead made the wise decision to contact Mr. Shelby. He redid our return and sent it via Priority delivery service in July, along with Title company proof of withholding. But, MD still stalled to process it. However, Mr. Shelby did not give up. He pestered them continuously until I finally got my refund in Sept. I am so thrilled with his perseverance and not giving into their unprofessional (if not unethical) bureaucratic behavior. I wholeheartedly recommend Mr. Shelby to solve folks tax difficulties.

Finding a new CPA after 19 years caused me some anxiety. Mr. Shelby and his staff have been professional, knowledgeable, and efficient. Always responding to calls and emails in a timely manner in addition to listening thoughtfully to my issues and concerns then subsequently offering sage comments for my consideration. They have been a pleasure to work with on taxes this year. and I look forward to building a long-term relationship with them.

This was my first visit with Michael Shelby and it wont be my last. I was impressed with how knowledgeable he was and even double checked himself by searching for the latest , most current information prior to submitting anything. Mike provided us a very good consultation with a tricky international tax issue we were having. He took the time to look over our paperwork and make a recommendation, even referring us to another provider when he realized we needed a different service than what he could offer. Very professional!

Mr Shelby is very secretive about his charges, take care to ask at each step what the cost is. He charges for each email, phone call, conversation, etc. that for others would be considered part of the service. This is all tallied up at the end, so the client is unaware of the charges and therefore has no choice in the matter. When confronted about the charges, he yelled at us, refused to file our taxes, and stormed out of the room. Then he proceeded to demand full payment and threatened with collections. He also acted unprofessionally by completely missing a scheduled phone conference and speaking curtly and condescendingly through the process. Be very wary.

Love Michaels patience and willingness to help. I have called to ask for guidance many times as I made decisions about navigating my early retirement needs. He was amazing and a great counselor! The whole staff supported me many times in the last years under his service!
