First BJJ is the best and most legit Brazilian Jiu Jitsu school in Utah, Carlos Santos and Suyan Queiroz, not only were great athletes with many achievements but they make it easy to learn when they are running classes. Always helpful and encouraging, the atmosphere is great at the gym. I fully recommend anyone from beginner to advanced to go check it out.

Let me first say that professors are WORLD CLASS Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, but as we all know that does not mean you are going to be a world class instructor and as negative as a review this is, I hope they change some things and better the gym. I really did enjoy my time there until I didnt.Here are my main reasons why:1. They rarely if ever clean the mats. Classes will start with kids class then another older kids class, womens class and then adults class and the mats have not been cleaned once during this time, its super nasty and a red flag.2. There is no Curriculum. There is no set up to the fundamentals or advancement of practice to learn the skills they present, it is always unplanned and uncoordinated. It really feels like the Professors come in and just show whatever is on their mind with no overall goal in mind.3. The made up belts (White-Blue) are silly and feel unearned, they charge you for every belt promotion, which is asinine and sometimes it feel like they promote people who either dont deserve it to get them to stay or to make a little profit. It also makes the belts system feel less substantial.4. Make you wear their gear (or you have to buy a patch to put on a Gi you buy somewhere else), which just feels like an awful business practice and their stuff is not the best quality.5. They charge you for every belt promotion (that alone gets me mad).6. The price is way to high for what is available and I mean there are Gyms with BJJ, MMA, Muay Thai, cardio and conditioning included in their membership for the same or a lesser price (really). Dont get me wrong if everything above was buttoned up it would still be on the pricier side.7. One of the instructors doesnt roll with the students and just seems like he doesnt want to be there.8. Gym culture, I didnt know what this was until I started going to other schools and saw how different they could be. I personally am a fan of the louder gyms that are a lot less reverent, where alot of people are laughing when they are having a hard roll. I would say definitely try a bunch of gyms before settling on one and find one that clicks with you. This Gym is not as happy as other gyms, but that is a personal taste and so you might feel differently, but for me this wasnt the right one.I know this will probably ruffle some feathers, but it had to be said I know there were others that felt the same way. I couldnt leave the gym without leaving a review (for real though clean your mats).I wish them the utmost success.

I went in for a free trial class in March and loved it. When I came back in May they remembered me and welcomed me back. These instructors are as legit as it gets. Dont take my word, research these guys. We are insanely lucky to have them here in SLC. The instructors as well as the other students are always encouraging and the environment is great. Incredible gym!!!!! The level of instruction is superb (as expected from two world champions) and I consider myself incredibly lucky to be able to roll with them every single lesson! My technique is improving so quickly and I keep surprising myself both in competition and when rolling with students from other schools.They have a really nice kids BJJ program and its awesome to see both instructors kids also training in the same gym!I absolutely recommend First BJJ. If you want to train Jiu-Jitsu this should be the place. I have been training with the First BJJ team for a few months and I love it. These guys are like family and treat everyone with respect. I actually enrolled my daughter because I thought she could use some of the skills. Not only self defense but being a good person as well.

I was just in town for the weekend visiting my son and called First BJJ Center to see if we could drop in on a class or get some mat time. (My home gym is SBG in Portland, Oregon.) Professor Santos is a dictionary for Jiu Jitsu. The deep knowledge he has is incredible. He is an amazing coach that has an overwhelming patience for his students. Utah is truly lucky to have both of these professors of BJJ. They are always professional and humble. Ive been under Professor Carlos for 3 years now and Ive been under Suyan for about 6 months and both have improved my BJJ game immensely. Being in the Air Force I have had to move around and train at other gyms but First BJJ is one of the best gyms I have ever been a part of. It is a family friendly, safe training environment where everyone is taken car of in regards to training. The gym is always kept neat and the mats are always clean. These guys are top notch instructors for all ages, experience levels. Regardless what you are interested in, be it competition, fitness, or just self defense these guys are the instructors to show you the RIGHT way.
