An inviting place to shop for fabric of all kinds. I enjoyed that this was more of a sewing stop than just strictly quilting which I am used to at home. There were fabrics for quilting, garment making, and any other sewing project you have in mind. A great selection of fat quarters, garment patterns, and a working space for those to use in the back. It was nice to see all kinds of people in the store when I was there. All the staff I encountered were great!

My husband often says that the only domestic about me is that live in a house ;-)! My daughter in law, who is a high powered attorney has taken up sewing for stress relief, go figure.She wanted a gift certificate from Modern Domestic so we made a trip there to pick one up for her. It was fun to see the beautiful colors, fabrics and threads they had in the store. They also teach sewing classes so you may want to try a class for yourself or someone you know.You wont see me there but I would love to see a picture of you sewing at Modern Domestic!

Clean, bright and well-organized. Beautiful selection of solid color quilting fabrics and a good selection of modern prints. Other fabrics as well. Notions, needles, sewing machines, patterns and more.

They are doing a great job of keeping everyone safe during covid19. All employees wear masks, they are only allowing a certain number of shoppers in at a time, and there is plenty of hand sanitizer and 6 feet distancing signs around. As always, they have plenty of lovely fabrics in different types, sewing tools, and Bernina sewing machines. Definitely a good and safe place to shop during the pandemic, and a good business to support.

Slightly elitist/snobby employees make this store sometimes hard to deal with but the selection is good so its easy to ignore. Just know that if you have questions about something it might be better to look it up beforehand than ask at the store

Ive had more than one excellent experience in this shop, which I dont know why I havent written a review yet. I was recommended to go in by a roommate as we used to live in this area at the time of my first visit.I needed to have a machine repaired, and had an excellent interaction with the main repairwoman who runs the service department. While they deal in Bernina machines, she gave my dinky Singer a look over and was able to explain exactly how I totaled my own machine. It was unrepairable and no parts could be ordered for that model. While she did introduce me to the Bernette models (as these were in my budget), she also offered that if I was interested, they had a machine sold to them from another customer that they could resell. Just awesome!I came back in to buy another machine after a few months, and another staff member was able to help me find what I needed. Im going to look forward to coming in for projects here and exploring the shop even further.

I took my bernina in for a repair, and the girl checking it in was very helpful to possibly fix it without the repair. She was also helpful with teaching me about the machine. It needed a small repair, done in 5 days! The technician also very helpful, couldnt be more impressed. Will definitely be back to get fabrics and machine goodies!

Their Technical service department provides the pinnacle in BERNINA machine care and charge minimal fees on parts and service. Great prices for individual/private Sewing/serging lessons. STELLAR trade-in value when upgrading!!!

I am seriously mathematically challenged, like numbers look like foreign languages to me and I can’t do basic addition and subtraction. This is hugely embarrassing, but thankfully Caitlyn at Modern Domestic was very mathematically inclined. She patiently walked me through the the measurements and cuts for all the fabric I needed to finish the backing for my first quilt.Besides excellent customer service, Modern Domestic has amazing apparel fabric. If I need to make something I like that I can find all the good stuff in one place, and while the prices are higher than Mill End and the selection is smaller, I’m often willing to pay a premium to not be completely overwhelmed by choices.

I took my basic sewing machine in for a tune up and the woman working in the service area was extremely helpful. She took time to show me how to best clean and oil my machine, answered all of my questions, and sent me on my way. I drive about an hour to come to this shop and it is worth it every time.

This place is a great resource. All the staff are low pressure. No one is going to try to convince you to buy a sewing maching. You may, however, leave with too many pretty fabrics.

Fabric stores are overwhelming ..MD does a nice job lessening that without skimping on the fabulousness of a fabric store.I only wish all the notions were together, but,it will way more then do... and the folks that work there are nice... that too.

I’m in love with sewing and a lot of that has to do with the wonderful people at Modern Domestic. Each and everyone of them have been amazing to work with. From buying a sewing machine to taking classes to the outstanding collection of fabrics and notions, this place is one of the best fabric/sewing stores in the PNW. I’ll gladly spend a little more for the quality of service I receive there. Thanks to the MD team for keeping it classy!

This is a Bernina dealership, and the sewing machines are very much the main event. Im not in the market for that level of equipment, so Im not their real customer. I dropped in because I needed some thread, which they had. They also have a select stock of fabric, patterns, scissors, etc. Staff were courteous and pleasant.

Very friendly staff, checked back stock and helped guide us through gift ideas when we had no idea about sewing. They also have classes and fun social project Friday nights.Seems like a great and friendly place for sewing for both experts and total newbies.

Wow what a great place. I have an older Viking sewing machine and it needed service.I have tried the usuals in town and was told to buy a new machine. I know mine is fine- just needed service. Modern Domestic never mentioned buying a new machine. They tested it right there to see if they could trouble shoot it. Nope- it needed service.Priced reasonably- esp for a dying art. Then when I went back to pick up my machine- another friend brought her machine in to be serviced. The owner ran some stitches, showed us what she was doing, oiled it, moved a few dials and kept testing the stitches til she got it right. No Charge. I was impressed. GO HERE IF YOU HAVE MACHINE CONCERNS. They also had a nice selection of cotton and lots of other items. A great addition to Portland.

Got a great beginners sewing machine. Free classes with purchase, and they let both my spouse and I participate. Our instructor was super nice and very informative without being condescending. Feeling confident.

I am brand new to sewing and went in looking for some fabric to make my first project and a staff member helped me with every question that I had! Will definitely be back :)

If looking for a Bernina this is the shop. The staff are over the top helpful. I could not be more pleased with my machine purchase and the support they provide. This is my second machine purchase from them. I have purchased from other dealers in the area but will only use Modern Domestics. You will not be disappointed.

Not only is this store beautiful to look at, it is a great place to shop. They offer excellent customer service as well. I picked up my machine from being serviced and Lupine graciously answered all my questions. Thank you so much. I highly recommend MD for Bernina sales and service.

Modern Domestics new location is wonderful! Beautiful layout and great inventory of cute fabrics. My first experience with MD was taking a class with Klum House at the old location. I showed up a half an hour early and was able to pick out all of the fabrics, buy the pattern, cut everything out on site. The staff was superbly helpful and so kind to beginners. I didnt get the same warm feeling from whom I believe is the owner, but the rest of her brood certainly makes up for it! Love the pay by the hour model and open sew times and experts floating around to help get you out of a jam! I always feel productive and happy after visiting MD!

I took my Singer in to be serviced. The repair person looked at it within five minutes of my arrival, diagnosed a bent needle, replaced it for free, and I was on my way again in less than ten minutes. Kind people, excellent service! While I hope I dont have sewing machine problems again any time in the near future, if I do, Ill be glad to have an excuse to come back!

I have been here three times. Every time, I have not felt welcomed by the staff, and not been given much help. Fabric Depot and Mill End are much friendlier and helpful, if less hip.
