Theyre just shuffling dogs out the door for the quick money.Careless descriptions of dogs: listed online likes dogs we get there... Not small dogs. (what?).Plus a lackadaisical, so what - tough luck attitude from whatever female talked to us, arms folded, as we stood in the rain.5th time trying to follow their directions:Show up first/early (tried that... Nope)Try going on a slower day (Nope today is Monday and supposedly one of the slower days)Email your questions about the dogs you see(nope didnt help because someone gets the dog before you can get there after emailing.)Read the listings carefully (nope see the small dogs part up above)Im done with this place and no doubt they dont care about customer service or bad reviews but you folks out there have been warned! So much for this veteran finding his four-legged family with this business. Either my money isnt good enough or maybe my medium complexion isnt pale enough.Stay FAR away

Love this place! I have adopted 2 dogs from here and we are looking to adopt another dog soon. The are small, so sometimes the selection is not great BUT we love working with a smaller shelter. We know they care about their dogs a lot more than the larger shelters and the dogs are less traumatized when coming from here. Would highly recommend.

Adopted a dog from here about a month ago. The adoption policies are detailed on their website and although it was frustrating to not be able to give them a call and schedule a time, we went on a Wednesday and only had to wait about half an hour. The adoption process took a while, but they let my family and I take him on a walk, which is what sold us on him. We met Louie before we left, and the way they interacted made me confident that I had made the right choice. (My little guy is even in one of the pictures up here.) I would recommend getting a family member from them, but definitely read through their current policies and come in early on Wednesday morning!

Definitely a different type of shelter experience. Plan on spending the day here, especially if coming in on a weekend. Also good to do your research and know what dogs youre interested in meeting. We got here on a Saturday about a half hour before the list went out and we were still the third people on it. That said, when it was our turn they let us spend a good amount of time with our dog, take him on a walk and really get a feel for him and if we thought it would be good fit. We also spent a good amount of time with Kelly and Tasha, who both obviously put their hearts into their work and are very knowledgeable about dogs. So yes, it can take a while but it is because the staff is thorough. They can be selective in where dogs go, but I really believe its because they care and want the best for their dogs.

We adopted out dog from them about a year ago. I cant say enough good things about this place. The sign in process took a little bit, nothing crazy, and we were able to visit Zazu with our other pup for 45 minutes. They were very upfront about his behavior issues and background (aggression issues, poor opinion of men, bite history) which was very appreciated, and we decided to bring him to his forever home to work on things. 36 hours later he is barreling into our bed and ok with being touched on his ears/feet/everything.We all still has work to do, but I believe that the awesome people at FDNLS got a sense this would be a good fit, and our silly animal family thanks you!

We got our dog here. This place is a really great no-kill dog shelter. One great thing is that the staff spend a lot of time with each dog, and gets to know their personalities. So you fill out a form letting them know what type of personality you are seeking in your best friend, and then they do a meeting with each dog who fits your profile. This landed us with the perfect dog for us!! Love this place!!!

Do your research (the site shows available dogs the Thursday or Friday before a coming weekend), and get there earlier than they open because the viewing list is first come, first serve. The staff obviously put their heart into it, and they try to give as much info on each animal as possible. Bring a snack because they dont rush each visit, so you may be waiting for a while. You also need to bring the family and/or pets with you because they really do try to make sure any adoption is final.

Helpful staff. They were honest about the dogs they had and helped us find the right fit for our family. Come with an open heart and be ready to wait, though. The dog we came to meet had already been adopted. They are first come first serve and we waited 2 hours. Once it was our turn though we got to meet the dog they suggested and it was a perfect fit. Great place to check out if you have kids. They have a suggested age range for each dog.

Although they make their adoption process very clear on the website, it’s still frustrating having to show up hours before they open to wait in line in hopes of getting the chance to meet the dog you may want to adopt. We followed the procedures on a Saturday morning and were given a time slot to come back several hours later to meet the dog we were interested in adopting. The meet and greet went fine but we were frustrated that they had not disclosed all of the pertinent information about the specific dog on their website. Specifically, that she had just given birth a few weeks prior and was not spayed yet. We ultimately ended up adopting from another shelter.Update:Not sure what their reply is referring to. I said in my initial review that their adoption process is very clear on the website. Also, they did indicate the dog had a pre-scheduled surgery but did not specify that it was a SPAY surgery (would definitely be helpful to know prior to going in to meet the dog).

After visiting with another dog two weeks ago and deciding she wasn’t a right for us we came back and adopted Tita (now Piper) from here last week. You can tell they know a lot about the dogs in their care and are very upfront about everything you need to know about the dog you’re interested in. I see a lot of the negative reviews are based on their sign in process but as long as you read the instructions on their website it actually works out well. You’ll have plenty of time to visit with the dog while they answer all of your questions. I would say that the dogs’ profiles they have online don’t always match their behavior but once you’re there they give you much better info and help steer you towards the right dog. I’m so glad we adopted from here because Piper is the perfect fit.

This place is a scam. Adopted a dog from here 3 weeks ago, told he had been given a clean bill of health and was crate trained, close to being potty trained, and 18 months old. Couldn’t get a vet appointment until yesterday because every vet in town is booked out a month. The vets first diagnosis? Hookworms, giardia, infected cysts in his intestines, and fleas. Not to mention, they said he is MAYBE 12 months, probably a little younger (which means the shelter had been feeding him adult food because that’s what they sent us home with). The “vet” that gave him a “checkup” in Texas before sending him to this shelter was contacted by my vet, only to be told they couldn’t release his medical records without the shelter’s permission.TL;DR this place is pretending like it’s some great non-profit. It doesn’t not care about the animals it takes in, nor does it do any level of vetting for families they send their dogs home with. The dog I looked at the first time I went got adopted by another person/family, and there were “lost dog” posters of her all over town literally a week later. The owner of the shelter looked over my application casually, barely reading the answers. The first dog I looked at i was unsure about taking home, and the caretaker advised me to just “take a leap of faith.” I will be reporting this place to the appropriate authorities.EDIT:Now that they’ve responded to this review claiming “money was the most important issue” to me despite not having mentioned the adoption fee a single time in this review, I’d like to point out that they told me a vet reviewed and vaccinated the dog during intake. Once they contacted me after I left this review, the said they didn’t have a vet on staff and administered shots themselves. Then they called my vet to give them more medical records and had a different reason for not having them on hand in the first place. Also when I registered my name on the microchip, I had to pay for it separately. So what is it the money from the adoption fees are going towards? Not medical care — they don’t have a staff vet. Not microchipping — I had to pay for that. Not the building — the sign is a vinyl sheet hanging on the front of the building, and there’s trash covered by a tarp in the “yard” next to the building. The director pulled up in a brand new Toyota Prius, though. Weird how that works. Anyway, I should have listened to the man who walked past the shelter the morning I adopted my dog and told everyone standing in line that everything they told him about the dog they adopted to him was a lie. They are clearly more of a for-profit organization trying to get dogs in and out as quickly as possible to turn a profit than they are a legitimate rescue shelter. And they can try to refute this review all they want, but there’s a reason my vet, my friend who works at a shelter in another city, and literally everyone else I’ve told about this has said that something isn’t quite right about this place.

Not sure what we would of done if we had small children with us that would of needed to go potty. But after going into a room and seeing multiple dogs, one picked us out. Of course not the one we originally thought we wanted, but one who wanted us 😍.I totally agree with their methods. Our home is better because they are helping rescue dogs who just want to be LOVED 💓🐶💙

My daughter and I are heartbroken as a result of the half truths we were told by the sponsor of one of the foster dog’s Chance. My only request is that Chance not be dog aggressive and Morgan Rhodes the sponsor assured me via emails he was playful and excited around dogs but and I quote “not at all aggressive.”We have a lot experience with Pitbulls and love them dearly. It was unfortunate that I had to reschedule my first meeting that took me over seven days to get. Even though I said I was available pretty much from the moment they accepted my application. Morgan assured me that no other applications were submitted and not to worry. Emails about scheduling meet/greets took in some cases seven days for a response. Finally I was on a three-way communication with myself, MR and the foster parent and still no response. Turns out unbeknownst to me they were processing other applications without letting me know. The weekend came I’m still waiting for a response when I was hiking up at Cape Horn in Washington with friends. I see a pitbull with the exact same markings and I knew it was Chance. The roommate of the foster parent was taking him on a hike he was not aggressive he came up to me immediately he was so sweet and wonderful. There’s no way he could be dog aggressive on a narrow trail like that. I reached out to Morgan to say how excited I was and I’m looking fwd to another meeting and he lets me know that Chance has been adopted by another family because they have a backyard and then went on to say how dog aggressive Chance is and needs more time. I have an 1800 square-foot townhome located near many trails and my daughter and I are extremely active. The assumption that a yard is going to help a dog socialize and become a more balanced dog is ridiculous. It’s convenient for the owner but it doesn’t ensure that the dog will have a happy and great life. Pitbulls love humans they love being with humans if you leave a dog outside they will be miserable.Chance would have been so happy with my daughter and I. I pray they made the right decision.

Love this place! I adopted all three of my dogs from here and have had only good experiences. The first dog I adopted is very skittish and needs a lot of extra help and training, but the folks here were very honest with me about that. I didnt feel like anyone tried to hide anything from me. At the same time, I didnt get that feeling that I was being judged like I have at animal rescues/shelters in the past. The employees dont act condescending nor do they hover. They let you hang out with the dogs in one of two side rooms. Yes, it can get very busy, especially on Saturday, so if theres a dog you like, I recommend getting to the facility about 15-30 minutes before they open to ensure you get to see the dog first. While they do screen adopters and seem to make good judgment calls, I didnt feel like they were overly scrutinizing or invasive either. A very pleasant change from my past adoption experiences! Also, adoption fees are reasonable. If youre looking for a dog, definitely give this place a try and skip the breeder! Youll be glad you did.

We have adopted from FDNL in the past and we took excellent care of a senior blind dog with really bad teeth and constant incontinence, so being judged for God knows what reason is really not what we needed. I have read all of the negative reviews of this place, and I think the people that left them have unreasonable expectations.I adopted my dog from Family Dogs eight years ago, and the process was simple and effective. We cant expect a place that operates on a donation-based budget to maintain the highest possible standards of care. With a limited staff, how can they give a perfect diagnostic report of every animal they encounte? Their mission statement is to find a forever-home for dogs, so of course they are going to frame every dog in its most positive light. My dog was an anxious nut for the first several months as he adapted to his new environment, and he caused thousands of dollars of damage. Now he is a great dog. The damage your dog does is your responsibility. If you dont have the patience to raise a dog, dont adopt one. If you are looking for a professionally-rained dog, and you dont have several thousand dollars to spend, youre an idiot. This is a shelter, not a spa.Thank you for the good work you do to save animals and place them with good people.

We got our sweet angel from here! The staff really know how to narrow down what you want and what dogs can meet those needs. The few reasons they do not get a 5 star in my eyes are because:1. The wait was 2.5 hours on a Saturday to even see a dog. (Granted, they did say an 1+ wait on a Saturday morning). At times it seemed longer because the staff would stand around and chat, seemingly not working. So dont make plans, and eat before. Worth the wait to find the perfect pet!2. They do not have a customer restroom! If youre waiting this long, you would think they would have one, oh well.I would still recommend this place over the other two we visited!

Mixed feelings about this place. While Im in love with our new pup, the staff were not terribly friendly. Helpful but not friendly. Also, we gave our dog a bath the first night and it was disgusting. I also feel like they misinformed me. I asked where they get vet care from and they said the Humane Society. So when it turned out that the kennel cough he got at the shelter turned into pneumonia, we had no choice but to pay $365 two days after we bought him for vet care because they only use the Humane Society for spays and neuters. Seems unfair to me since the illness started under their watch, but there werent really other options. They didnt even tell us he has kennel cough until after we bought him for goodness sake. Definitely feels sneaky to me but Im glad the pup is so sweet. He must have had some decent socialization with people at the kennel.Id give 2.5 stars to be more generous but its not an option on my phone.P.S. theyve responded to my emails but it is frustrating that they can only be reached by email or you have to leave a voicemail to be called back (they never called my partner back). It sounds like they are super busy but it also seems like they are overextended and not providing good customer/vet care as a result.

These people are doing the community a huge service by running a no kill shelter. The photos they take of the dogs up to the pre-screening and amount of time they let you spend with your potential new family member is great! I unfortunately have to give them a 3 star rating because they have a very nasty and hateful employees working for them. What should have been a wonderful day of love and excitement was stressful and to top it off, we were spoken to as if we were human garbage and should be ashamed of our existence. We were all but called names throughout the adoption process, but thankfully, the other young ladies there were extremely professional and kind.We asked the usual questions, does she have a violent history? Does she have any illnesses? Is there anything we should be aware of? The answer to all of these questions were no. Much to our surprise, after the fee had been paid, paperwork signed, and took her home to review the contents in her folder, we discovered that she had a history of biting her two previous owners (which is why she was surrendered-twice) and had been diagnosed with a rare heart disease, aortic stenosis. Her life expectancy, according to the vet, is no more than 7 years. She was sold to us as an active dog who would be great for the outdoors and hiking... Which is what we were looking for. But, the vet says otherwise. Two weeks after having her, she fainted at the dog park from playing too hard. We now monitor her exercise and have to buy special dog food to maintain her sensitive diet. These are extremely minor things that we dont mind doing to give her a beautiful life but it is far from what we were sold. We feel like we were lied to.It has been 6 months since we adopted our sweet girl and it has been quite a journey of getting to know one another! We love our little angel and wouldnt trade her for the world!! I just wish the shelter were more honest with us.. and if it was an honest mistake, I wish they had taken the 10 minutes it took me to go through her history and make us aware before selling her as an active dog. I am thankful to them for bringing her into my life but I would suggest that future pet adopters please ask to see the dogs paperwork before signing and paying.

The staff is knowledgeable about the dogs they have, and they will do their best to match you up with one that will fit in with your lifestyle. They really care about their dogs and they want to make sure they are successful in finding them permanent homes.

They give sanctuary to dogs that are more challenging to adopt. Only complaint, is that the dog I had my heart set on rescuing has an extremely specific, and difficult set of issues. I wish Id known sooner. They were very upfront about everything, and really care that their dogs get matched with the right forever home.

Be warned. We showed up half an hour early and found that 10 people had signed a roster but werent physically there. On the roster you list the dogs you want to see.We came to see one dog and one dog only. Each person on the roster before us had listed three or more dogs. We figured since we were the only people who only came to see that dog, wed be able to met her while the other families saw the other dogs theyd listed. That is not the case. You have to sit in the waiting room while each family sees every single dog they listed. There is no time limit. So a family can see four dogs and then stay in the room while they compare their choices. So we came for the one dog that was a perfect fit for us just to watch three other families wonder if she was the best of the options they had.It really feels like a place you do shop comparisons for dogs.EDIT:Also, the dog we adopted was absolutely filthy. We thought when we first saw and felt her that maybe she just had an oily coat. We gave her a bath the next day and mounds of dirt matted fur came off. We gave her a bath a week for three weeks before we got to see her actual color and feel her actual fur. This also told us she was much older than they stated. They told us she was three but after we washed her we saw that shed been a mother more than once and had a lot of graying fur. We dont mind that she is older but it shows that they never washed her. Not when they first received her or anytime after. After cleaning her we also saw that she was drastically under weight. We weighed her and she needed to gain 10-15lbs to be in a healthy range for her height and breed. This makes me think they didnt monitor is she was eating there. She was also walking sort of side-ways on her paws because of how long and curled to the side her nails had gotten.Happy to report that 6 months later she has a gorgeous coat, is maybe even a little chunky... and she walking on her paws correctly!

What a great experience! I really appreciate the match making service Family Dogs provides when looking for a new family member. Its not a turn and burn place that pushes dogs out the door. I loved the idea of matching a dog with my family and lifestyle. I adopted a very timid girl they took it. They were very honest about her rough past and perhaps her future. Its the BEST DECISION Ive ever done. She is amazing and I cant imagine life without her. Ive adopted 2 dogs from Family Dogs and its been great. Kudos Family Dogs. Thank you for being dog advocates, rather than just letting dogs out the door to reach numbers or becuase people think theyre cute... right now.

Love, love, love this amazing shelter. They care so deeply about the animals in their care and truly want to put them with a home where they will get the love they deserve. Their descriptions of the dogs personality and traits is stellar. We rescued a pitbull/terrier and she is the most loving dog to our family and friends.

No kill shelter. Always a great selection of dogs. Paperwork can be a little dodgy and you might something a bit different than what they say, but it is all good.

We got our four-legged friend, Leela, from them. The staff are helpful, friendly, and work hard to facilitate a positive space to make an adoption decision. If youre looking to adopt here, get there at least 45 minutes before they open, maybe even 90 on Saturday and Sunday. Write your name on the list on the clipboard next to the door, and expect a bit of a wait. However, its really worth it, and rescue dogs are where its really at.

Extremely unfriendly staff, acted as though we would not know anything about dogs. That the way a dog acts in a shelter is going to be what they are like in a home and there is no way to train said dog out of certain behaviors. Being someone who works with dog behavior and training on a daily basis I found this rather odd. The place was dirty and the dog we looked at that they told us was not going to be a good fit and refused to let us adopt before we even met him, was very friendly and sweet but had mildly severe gingivitis. No wonder the dogs there are so cheap. Very unprofessional.

Super Awesome Organization!I adopted my 3 month old Pit Bull puppy from them, they gave me all the information they had on him. My little dude was going to be euthanized in California so Family Dogs had him transferred to their care. I saw him and knew he had to be mine! He is now 4 months old, happy, and healthy! It still bothers me to think that he could have been killed, not even given a chance at life. But Family Dogs made it possible for Hank (thats what I named him) to have a new chance on life. I cant thank them enough for helping us meet, and giving me the opportunity to give him a better existence.Thank you sooooo much Family Dogs for all you do in saving lives, and helping give these little fur faces new leases on life!

We got the greatest dog of all time about 8 years ago from FDNL. Only downfall was he was named Neddy. Nowadays hes graying around the muzzle, but he is a fantastic dog. Our adopting experience was great.hen we looked at the website we knew we should show up early and sign in. So we did. There was maybe someone in front of us. We explained what dog we wanted to see and why, and we got to see Neddy and another of his littermates. I had been worried theyd try to talk us into an older dog instead of a puppy, but they heard our needs and respected them. The staff was nice, not saccharine, but I prefer reasonable to overly friendly.

I was very pleased with my experience at FDNLS! First of all... they DO have a bathroom :P I live about an hour away, and they are pretty close to the I-205 exit (and several pet stores for supplies!). I went last week and got there about 45 minutes before they opened, and was 2nd on the waiting list. The people that made it before us got the dog we were interested in... So we packed up and went home. The next week they had 4 ADORABLE puppies that we were interested in! We decided that this time, we were going to be FIRST on the waiting list! So we got there 2 hours before they opened just to make sure we got the first pick. We killed time by browsing local pet supply stores and when we returned at 11:00, there must have been 10-12 people on the list after us. The puppy visit went very smooth, the paperwork was quick and easy, they were very helpful and informative, and I highly recommend Family Dogs New Life Shelter to anyone looking for a dog! It was a great experience, and Im thankful for our little girl Bella :)

We adopted a sweet 1 year old lab/weimaraner mix from Family Dogs New Life Shelter in mid-April. We love her and she is a lovely addition to our little family.Heres the good:The staff is very friendly and they are good at making sure that you meet dogs that will be a good fit for your lifestyle, because they clearly want the dogs to go to the perfect home for both dog and parents. I love that about this shelter! The reason I only gave 3 stars is this:Our little Bailey (adopted as Justine) was really dirty when we adopted her, which is to be expected, however they didnt seem to have a vet that they go to, and if they did, they dont do a full work up on their dogs before they send them home. Bailey came home with us and she was totally fine for the first 3 days, but by day 4 she was tired all the time, didnt want to play, didnt want to go for walks, was coughing a lot! It got to the point that we were really scared for her, so we took her to a 24 hour clinic. We had a physical scheduled for her a few days later but we couldnt wait that long and let her be uncomfortable. It turned out that she has pneumonia, which is not only pretty rare for dogs, but also extremely dangerous and very contagious!!!She was not exposed to any other dogs or animals from the time we adopted her to the time that she got sick, so we know she got it from the shelter. It was an extra $1,000 cost for us to take her and get xrays and tests done, and for her medication for a 4 week supply.Shes responding well to medication but it was a very unexpected cost for just having adopted a dog less than a week before this happened. My point is this, if you plan on adopting a dog, which is a great thing to do, this is a great shelter, but you need to be aware that there is some sort of pneumonia outbreak there, because she got it from the shelter, so be prepared for that, and please take your dog to see a vet as soon as physically possible to catch it early or try to prevent it, if possible.Great shelter but I think they could do a better job in the health of their dogs.Adopt, rescue, save a life

I have issues with the fact that Family Dogs doesnt have a vet that they use. They provide no preventive treatments for their animals like worming or flea meds either. They have no money for medical care. These seem like basic standards of care that should be used by any shelter, especially a no kill that may keep the animals for long periods of time.
