Great space with a unique and beautiful canvas mat... Working out on this surface is a delight. The instructors are top notch, and they are genuinely nice to work with... Practice is organized and professional. They are welcoming to newcomers and guests from out of town. A+ all the way

A truly special place where newcomers are welcomed with open arms, and all practitioners are nurtured through thoughtful, high-quality instruction. Expect to grow not only as a martial artist, but also as a person. This path has been truly life-changing, and the members of this dojo are a big reason why. Arrive ready to get in shape in so many ways!

Our 16yo daughter loves Portland Aikido. She has trained here for almost two years, and we are grateful for the confidence, discipline, and resilience she has earned through her practice. She dislikes most sports, but loves aikido, gets a great workout here, and comes home tired. The calm, quiet aspects of aikido have also become important to her. She feels she is practicing mindfulness techniques and says its almost meditative.Portland Aikido has several classes per week, so she can always fit sessions into her busy schedule. The instructors are wonderful at working with all ages, kids through adults, and they are communicative with parents.PA doesnt offer a teen class, but this is a low-risk, gentle art. She began in the adult classes at 14 (and small for her age), and we always felt she was safe and nurtured. The instructors and other students helped her feel comfortable and empowered working with all ages. She is a high school sophomore but already has a relatively professional after-school job. I believe a large part of her ability to win that job and do it well comes from the teamwork mindset and adult-interaction skills she has developed while practicing at Portland Aikido.

At Portland Aikido, Ive practiced with experts and beginners. Every class presents mindful challenges, and every partner provokes body-bending self reflections. Aikido can be a life-long endeavor offering health benefits, mental tuning and a warm and open community. My 8 year-old and I have participated in seminars together and have been welcomed at USAF dojos all over the place.

In aikido you receive what you bring. At this dojo I have received calm, focus, kindness, acceptance, rigor, vision and clarity. I surely hope that means I brought them too!The folks who train here have internalized the idea that the only true challenge is the challenge in ourselves They work to help each person meet themselves where they are and grow.(Also, if you want, theyll toss you across the room. Its SO much fun!)

My teenager started practicing at Portland Aikido nearly 3 years ago. After watching the classes twice a week for a few months, I saw how welcoming and respectful the dojo members are to a young person. I also saw how my teens self-confidence and physical stamina improved dramatically. I realized I wanted the same things for myself and started practicing in the same classes as my child. Since then, we have both experienced personal and physical improvements, and our relationship has gotten even stronger. Aikido is a wonderful practice for parents and children to do together, and Portland Aikido is a great place to do it!

This is a wonderful dojo that welcomed me into practice three years ago. Our teachers are skilled, dedicated practioners with decades of experience in the art. Our dojo’s community is supportive and encouraging. Aikido quickly became more than just another activity, but a part of who I am.

I am sixteen and have been practicing aikido for around two and a half years. It is one of the best decisions I have ever made. Aikido has given me awareness of my body in relationship with my surroundings. I can move with more confidence and have a higher stamina. I can use the teachings of aikido in verbal conflict as well and it has drastically improved my communication skills. It has taught me how to focus and communicate with a partner, even nonverbally. Despite being one of the few teenagers in the dojo, I have never felt unwelcome or less than my fellow practitioners. I would recommend aikido for any and everyone, no matter the age, and Portland Aikido is the perfect environment to learn and enjoy this magnificent art.
