I had a small wood stove installed last winter. Initially I was really pleased with the install service. About a month later we had some black smelly liquid leaking from the bottom of our stove where the legs connected. It stunk up the house and stained our hearth pad. I let them know about our problem and the install tech came out and tried to reseal the problem area on the stove, but the problem persisted. It has been 5+ months since I notified them about the problem. I have had to call them back numerous times to check on the status of a seemingly simple problem, only to be told they were on it and they would call me in a week. I have spoken with the sales rep from Top Hat and he told me they had to order a special product from the manufacturer (hearthstone) to remedy the problem, but that he would come dtake care of it personally as soon as the product arrived. I emailed hearthstone and verified that this was the correct response, but I am rather frustrated that something as seemingly simple as this isnt solved on the manufacturing end. Top Hat has told me 3-4 more times that they would get back to me, but have not done so and I continue to have to call back weekly to check on the fix. Poor customer service and poor organization has made this a less that pleasing experience.

I enjoyed working with Top Hat and Im happy with the wood insert they installed in my fireplace. My only complaint is that it would be good if they notified homeowners of the dust that could cover the room where the work is being done. My job required removal of tiles inside the chimney, which created a bunch of dust. Id have covered my upholstered furniture. The installers took some precautions to manage the dust, but Id have taken more, had I known.

We had purchased a fireplace insert from Top Hat in 2011. It was clear our remote control had shorted out, but we were concerned things were not right with respect to the logs in the fireplace. Patrick, The Top Hat technician, did a superb job recognizing a number of problems and cleaned the glass of the insert like new. He explained the issues he discovered very well. He took the time needed to do the job properly. We have lots of confidence that Top Hat technicians and sales people sell high quality products and give very competent service. It is a relief to know we have a safe functional unit. I would highly recommend Top Hat for your fireplace needs.

Top Hat is Top Notch!Ive done my fair share of remodeling, and among all the various workers Ive had, Id give top marks to Top Hat.My project involved removing a gas burning stove from in front of my rather unique oversized hearth, and either returning the hearth to its original wood-burning splendor, or else inserting a high-efficiency wood-burning stove within the hearth itself.I took 6 bids. One company suggested I redo the masonry and go with an insert. Another suggested that I try to have a glass screen custom made from Italy. Of the four that made sensible recommendations, Roy‚ the owner of Top Hat, was clearly the most knowledgeable and took the most time to look at the house (airflow, outside chimney, etc) and discuss my options patiently. He also clearly grasped the aesthetics of the project. We talked for nearly an hour. In the end, his bid was reasonable, to boot, not out of line with the other reasonable bids (which did not include the Italian glass and masonry bids, needless to say).The installation was amazing. Although some brute strength was required to hoist a 500 lb stove into the hearth, the guys who did the work were exceedingly careful, courteous, efficient, and professional. If only all such work were to go as smoothly as this job did! Plus, there was swag: a welcome kit consisting of a fire starter kit, soot remover, and oven mitts.My one exceedingly minor criticism has to do with the scheduling. I get that remodeling fireplaces, chimneys, etc. involves a certain amount of guesswork in terms of time. One never knows what sorts of problems one will encounter, after all. So its fair that Top Hat gives customers a rough estimate of when the work will be done, and says theyll fine tune it with a phone call about a week out. My work was scheduled months out. However, when there was a slight delay of a week, I was not notified. This was a minor frustration, but I still think that Top Hat could organize some kind of online tracking system that would work better.Still, thats a minor grumble compared to how satisfied I am with the rest of the process and the overall result. The stove works brilliantly and looks fabulous! Overall, Id give Top Hat top marks. Only thing from preventing an A+ is the scheduling. Otherwise, solid A work!

It all started with a very helpful and informational experience with Mark in the sales department at the Madison store. It continued with a site visit with Gary and Rahne setting up the installation . Quentin and Ben did an EXCELLENT job on the installation. We would recommend Top Hat as an excellent choice for any type of fireplace!!!

I have had TopHat at both our condo in the Lake Delton and in our Janesville home. Excellent service personnel with in-depth knowledge of gas fireplaces. We call Lloyd’s of Janesville. They referred a technician who did know the type of fireplace we had. This was in June and after calling several times we called TopHat because we had them from Baraboo in 2019 for our Lake Delton condo. The scheduled for the following Monday. We are extremely satisfied.

I would like to echo the other one star person here. I paid Top Hat to have my chimney chaise repaired after an inspection in the fall, September to be exact. I paid my deposit and waited. I then called in October to pay another amount of the deposit, and was told they couldn’t come out until November. I then called the day they were supposed to come out, and they said sorry we forgot about you, and since we were dealing with Covid i let it slide and said fine when can you come out? They then came in December and one of the technicians fell on my roof, and said since he got hurt and they forgot the correct tool they can’t come back today but they’ll call me to set up a new appointment. I then wait until January to call them because they had not contacted me yet again. Someone answered and said it’s the end of the business day so I am going to send you to voicemail and someone will call you the following Monday. It is now the middle of February and when I called the person felt my being upset was unreasonable and said all she could do was either have me wait until they contacted me when they felt the snow had melted enough or send me a refund. I asked if I could just get a discount for how long I had been waiting and for dealing with this unprofessional behavior and she said no, and when I finally got upset after all this time she tried to claim I was being unreasonable for being upset. I absolutely would never go through themSince they told me the chaise had to be built specially for my chimney, which is why it cost over 1000$ for just a chaise, I hope they have fun with that waste of money since I said I’ll take the refund then instead. The irony being if this had been done in almost any other way I had plans on having them changing out my wood burning fireplace to a gas oneUpdate : the owner messaged me on here saying I was off by when my down payment was, but did not address every other single time I had tried to contact Top Hat to figure out when it could be done - and that they never called me back with a month stretch every single time with me then finally contacting them yet again, which led to it being now February - when they are stating it’s just no longer safe to do, and still did not recognize all of what their staff did wrong. I would seriously not recommend this company.

Had the Top Hat team come to my house to get information to provide a quote to convert a wood burning fireplace to gas in early December and was really excited to work with them. However, its now mid February and I never heard back from them to get a quote despite their team letting me know several times theyd get back to me over email. Very disappointed.

Patiently waited 6 weeks for an appointment only to be called the day of my appointment a few hours beforehand to inform me that my appointment was being cancelled due to someone being sick. Offered to reschedule my appointment IN 2 MORE WEEKS. Not later today, not tomorrow, not in a day, but 2 weeks later. Very poor customer service, will not consider using Top Hat and will make sure to let my neighbors know as well.

I don’t have have enough good things to say about this company! We had an old wood burning fireplace that had been converted to gas before we bought our house. It had ceased working and when it came time to replace our roof this summer we decided to replace the fireplace as well. Every member of their team was fantastic to work with and had phenomenal communication. Our first point of contact, Joe, was really patient with all of our questions when he took initial measurements and walked us through the process. Rahne, who does their scheduling was super communicative and even went above and beyond to coordinate Top Hat’s team with the roofing team so that the work could happen concurrently. Our installers Ben and Quinton were personable and kind and totally transformed our beaten up old fireplace quickly and efficiently. They walked us through every aspect of how it works, and were really knowledgeable and patient as well. The end result was gorgeous and we couldn’t be happier. All in all, I can’t recommend this company enough.

Tophat did an excellent job with my fireplace insert project converting an old open fireplace with a cheap gas log into an amazing firebreathing wood insert, the Jotul Rockland C550. This thing is incredible in how quickly it fires up and the amount of heat it produces. Its also so efficient that I dont even have to clean out the ash every time, maybe every 5 times. Very happy with the final product, check out the before and after photos.

We’ve been working with Top Hat for about 5 years now. They installed our wood stove and have been cleaning it annually for us since then. We’ve always had a good customer experience but this year Tyler and Colton went above and beyond to help us clear out some bad creosote buildup. Our wood stove is our primary heat source so we really value knowing that it is safe to use!

Tyler and John came to sweep my chimney in Madison yesterday and they went over and above my expectations. I have a very tight fit between my stove and the fireplace opening which they negotiated together several times; they were up on the roof in the snow; they took out a couple of dead birds; they negotiated a trouble spot in the liner; they repaired a connection that was not tight. I was very very impressed. Many thanks to them and to Top Hat for always providing such excellent service.

I have worked with Top Hat for many years with the most fun project being a 3-sided, stone, peninsula gas fireplace installation in a basement finish project which is the most memorable and ended up in their show book. Most recently I hired Top Hat for a chimney clean and inspection. It has been ages since Ive had a wood burning fireplace and now have one in my current residence. The year prior we used the fireplace and had smoke in our home often. This year we decided to test cleaning and it has done the trick. Tyler did a great job and spent time answering questions and sharing ideas for safety. Most definitely consider Top Hat top notch when it comes to your in home fireplace and chimney needs.

We have loved our fireplace since we had it installed in August 2013 by Top Hat and were pleased with the whole process. It broke when it was still under warranty and someone came out right away to fix it and we were very pleased.In September 2019 it stopped working again. My husband figured out that it might need a new gas valve. We called to have someone come and fix it but no one was ever able to schedule it when we called multiple times. We left messages to no avail. We had to finally go there to schedule it. The earliest they could come was December 10th 2019. When the man arrived we told him that we thought it was the fuel pump, he spent an hour and a half here to confirm that the problem was what we said it was, charged us $170, told us the part would be ordered, left, and hasnt been back since. It is now January 8, 2020 and we still dont have a working fireplace and no one is reaching out to us about it. We understand that things break and are not mad about that part. Will winter be over by the time its fixed?If you are reading this review, its still not fixed. We will update when it is and how much more we had to pay to go 4 months and counting without our lovely fireplace.Edit: They connected us right after this review was posted and fixed it on January 23rd. They gave us a discounted labor fee for our troubles and the fireplace now works as it should!

I recently had a fireplace installed. The two installers did a great job in every aspect including customer service, installation, explaining features and how the install would work.They also did an excellent job to make sure they cleaned up everything and protected my home. The install team is friendly and and personable; they get 5 stars.The sales team did a great job listening to my ideas and provided the perfect fireplace option for me. There was some response lag probably due to it happening over the holidays. After the install was complete it was mentioned they could have done more of the total project Im working on. If I had known up front I would have scheduled that also.Sales team gets 4 stars.

Called Nov. 24th told they would send someone out to look at my chimney and give me an estimate. Called again on December 13th they had no record of me calling (who did I talk to for 5 minutes then). Tyler came out on Dec. 28th said he would call me with an estimate. Called them again on January 13th when I hadnt heard back. Tyler called a couple of days later and said the office misplaced the paperwork. Tyler said he would come out and remeasure and give me an estimate then. Today is January 24th and I still havent heard back. Received a call on January 29th to have someone come out on February 12th and measure again. (Will update review if I ever heard from them again)

We are new to this house. There are 2 fireplaces, but one is walled in. We had no idea if the fireplaces were safe. Dale came and thoroughly inspected everything. He found the walled off fireplace was unsafe to use, so no use ripping the wall open now. He also found that there were safety issues with the main fireplace, and the damper was broken. He fixed the damper, sealed minor cracks on the roof, and showed us how to deal with the remaining issue to burn safely. He also took time to tell me about what can be done to get more heat from our fireplace. Our hearth is very narrow, and they were able to sell us a fire resistant hearth mat at a decent price, which they delivered the same day. I was very happy with their service.

So far Ive had really good experiences with Top Hat. We purchased our fireplace from them in 2005. We have had to replace some bearings on the blower motors over the years. Top Hat knew what I needed and was able to explain to me how to replace them. My most recent conversation was with Mark on the phone.

We got a nice pellet stove at a decent price, but I wish we would’ve gone with a different company. Once they have your money, they don’t care about your experience. The communication was terrible and the follow up was mostly done by us, having to check in. The hearth pad that the stove sits on was too small for our area due to a measuring error on their part, but since I signed the proposal that’s what we were stuck with. I received a change order proposal for $500 for them to come and put in the correct size hearth pad (which should have been installed in the first place). When I spoke to the store manager about our issue, he offered 50% off labor which still would have cost us about $350. Laughable attempt at making things right. We ended up exchanging the hearth pad and installing ourselves. I expect more from a company when you spend $4,000 with them. Go elsewhere!

Wood stove install went awesome and love it. Went there in late August to inquire about getting a wood stove. They came out the next week and took measurements. Then came troubles. I called AND stopped in the store every week FOR TWO MONTHS and couldn’t get a estimate!!! All voicemails and inquires were ignored. Finally talked to a different sales person, told my story and he expedited the estimate. By now we were in November and they said they were booked till Jan/Feb. I then emailed someone in the Baraboo location told my story and they expedited the install. Fast forward to the cleanings. Had one done the first year and went well. They tried to sell me on a annual cleaning but denied it. They still called me a year later saying they were coming out for a cleaning in a week. Called back saying to please don’t come out. They still did!! Called to schedule a cleaning last fall, they were booked solid but got me in November. Sure enough they called the truck broke down and they rescheduled for three more weeks out!! It was literally well over two months for just a 30 min cleaning!! All in all they have a monopoly on the best stoves in the area. They do great albeit pricey installs and services. Their customer service and communications can be really bad depending who you talk to. Good luck if you do go with them.

I recently called Top Hat as the pilot in my gas fireplace burnt out. Worried about potential gas leaks, I requested immediate service. Not only did the person I spoke with refuse to send anyone, but she refused to speak with me because I did not know the brand my fireplace was. Im housesitting. How would I know? Shouldnt your company be able to come out and tell me? Ive never dealt with anyone so rude before. How do they stay in business?

In November 2014 we had someone out to the house to discuss options for our house fireplace that we wanted to turn into a woodstove area. We were told there were some options, discussed them in detail, and was told wed be receiving a quote in the mail. Never got it. I emailed the contact twice - no reply. I then called and talked to the person that was out here, TWO MONTHS later, and he gasped - saying that he forgot and a quote would be sent out via email immediately. That was a month ago and guess what never happened. So my conclusion is this company is deceitful and has zero follow-through with customers. This is horrible work ethic. I strongly recommend AGAINST giving this place your business.
