I’ve adopted from and fostered for Adoption First. Some of the people I’ve met here are some of the greatest people I’ll ever meet. Their priority is to save as many lives as possible and they do an amazing job at it. Like any rescue though, they have a capacity. As much as they’d like to to take in every single dog they find, it is impossible. They are a well organized rescue and continue making improvements every day. Keep in mind, they are a non profit organization, all the money they make from donations, adoption fees and fundraisers goes right back to the dogs.

This place is phenomenal. Completely volunteer run and non-profit. It seems some of the below reviews do not understand that you cannot enter the kennel side of the rescue due to liability and insurance purposes but they will most definitely show you each and every adoptable dog in the play yard. During open hours, you can come and meet any dog available and get a feel for their temperament and personality first hand. Outside of open hours, they will schedule appointments if you’re looking at a specific dog with an approved application. The volunteers are all great, and try their best to help everyone and every dog. Another thing people need to understand is that saving dogs off of the local euthanasia lists comes before owner surrenders because they are the dogs at risk of dying. This rescue saves hundreds of dogs every year. Thank you Adoption First!

I couldn’t be more happy that my fiancé and I chose to adopt from Adoption First! Before we came to the shelter I was chatting with a volunteer over Facebook who gave me all the information I needed, she was extremely kind. The coordinator reached out to me once our application went through and invited us to meet the dog we chose. The volunteers seriously put their heart and soul into this shelter…. And it does not go unnoticed! Our adoption process took less than a few days and we were off with our new pup! Such a great experience! The one star reviews made me sad. There’s a policy in place to make sure all these dogs go to a good home. :)

If you have a pet restriction and emotional support animals dont even bother to get your hopes up. You will fill out an application and get told you need paperwork even though you forwarn them about your animals. By the time you get the paperwork from where you are living the animal Is adopted

This place is a joke! I went in to see about options I have. My mother was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s and is going into a home and no longer able to keep her dog. I wasn’t trying to have them take the dog I was just asking for help to get her adopted out…thought that’s what rescues were all about. I was turned away and told to send an email explaining the situation. I did and got an email back asking for more information and pictures of the dog. Only to receive another email saying they are full at this time and unable to help…ok so what do you actually do then other than take peoples money?? Places like this should be shut down.

A wonderful organization that truly cares about the dogs best interest. I spent a year and a half volunteering with Adoption First. The directors and fellow volunteers make it feel like a big family. I have seen them do so much to try and save all the animals they can. Even if it is going to cost a lot of money with a vet. They will do all they can for the dogs. Many of the dogs are placed in foster homes to be shown love, become better trained, and to learn more about their personalities. You can’t expect to show up and look at all the dogs when they are placed throughout in different homes. They offer many events throughout the year where you can come and see numerous dogs at one time. This is a volunteer based organization in an area that is constantly transitioning new people in and out daily and they do a remarkable job.

We just brought a dog home and we had the BEST experience at this shelter! Everyone who helped us was kind and they knew what they were talking about. It is obvious that they care for the animals there. They were also able to give us great detail about the dogs personality. The shelter was clean and well taken care of. I would 100% recommended this shelter to anyone looking for a new fur baby!

Almost impossible to see pets available for adoption. Once you dissect the website looking, you find you most go to a Facebook page, then create a login & then join their page... Before you vet to see all available pets.... Honestly, not surprised they are over ful when they make it so difficult to even look & see if your even interested in any of the pets there... Not good marketing set up😕

This place is wonderful. They rescue, rehab and place dogs in their forever home. I have adopted 2 dogs from them and the process was smooth and painless. If you are looking to add too your family I would definitely go to adoption first. Even if your not ready to add to your family they can always use donations, volunteers and fosters.

Rude employees. If you are planning on going to this shelter to check out the animals in person just know that they wont let you walk through to see them all. They will give you a book with pictures-the exact same ones that they have online, and tell you to pick one and they will go get it for you.

I went to this place with intentions of adopting an animal. When I asked to see their animals they referred me to a book of pictures. I asked to actually walk through to see them all and they said they would bring one out if I wanted to see one. I yet again requested to see them for myself in person because pictures tell me very little about an animal, and I was open to ANY breed or size or temperament, I just wasnt going to know from a picture, i needed to see them to find the right one. Again they said they would bring one out if I wanted to see it. I walked out. What kind of a shelter doesnt let you look at their animals in person.

I have adopted two fur babies from Adoption First now and I have to say that the ladies who helped me where absolutely wonderful! The adoption first board members and volunteers are all so kind and they worked with me to find the right dog- not just any dog. The adoption process was very smooth and the fees are very reasonable considering all the vetting that they do for every pet they rescue from high kill shelters. I cant think of a better place to adopt a dog from in eastern NC

Run by volunteers and they take such GREAT care of all their rescues. Everyone here is kind and patient. I adopted my dog from them about a month ago. They let me do a week trial run to make sure she would be a good fit for our family (We had another dog and a toddler) and sure enough the dog did great and the adoption process was very smooth. By far the best rescue I have come across yet!

I had called before going out there. They were totally disorganized, I had asked if there was any cat friendly dogsThe older Gentleman that sat at the counter was not the person i talked on the phone. he had no clue. He sent me to talk with someone else whom was busy with a lady.Thinking he would get to me when he was done but know he just walked away. The placks on the kennels were sparsely used most had names but not availableity. Few had any information about the dogs. There were people cleaning the kennels, walking the dogs and cleaning up. I could see that they were trying but we left dogless and disappointed.

The dogs are great! The people, suck. If you come here be prepared to be side glared at, talked about as if your not there and shamed if your thoughts dare differ from theirs. My experience was awful, my mind was made up to make a new life long companion for myself and my family to the point that i was on the paperwork. I gave them my paperwork and they asked me why i didnt get my female dog fixed. i informed her that my wife (and mother of my kids) didnt feel it was right to take away her chance to become a mother. So we would allow her to have her own pups. THIS is where it went wrong. The women i was talking to mouthed wow (professional huh?) and went on to get her boss it seemed. She told us that because i chose to let my dog have pups that she would not allow me to adopt an already neutered/spade dog. Among her rambling and incoherent shaming, i understood the policy, but She went on to treat us like criminals. She continued by saying how horrible it was for dogs to give birth and that dogs should never have to go through it. Which is overly dramatic is it? Then went on to yell how shes more likely to have cancer and the pups could have defects and such. As our kids were right next to us (well gee never had to think about that). She should of just informed us like a respectable ADULT who wants to represents her agency in the right way. For the animals sake i hope they employ someone more competent of showing some conscious social thought.

I was given a Pitbull pup & told she was a Shepard/ hound mix. She had stomach issues & is showing a lot of aggression.which I thought may have been because she wasnt feeling well.( it was not) I got ahold of the foster who said they knew the Mom was a pitbull.I wrote to them aboutthis and was told you can just return her to the shelter! No better then a puppy mill!!

I adopted Rocket (aka Lacie) Nov 4 2017. She was very thin but she has filled out nicely and quickly. Poor little pup, is always afraid she is going is going to be beaten. In the 2 months Ive had her, she is very calm with me, and any child, any age. She has become such a big part of my family, and myself, that my 2 year old granddaughter, whos afraid of any animal, is in love with her. I am truly blessed. We will all continue to work with her, and I believe she will come around. Thank you Jane Evans.

This dogs are sweet as can be . BUT THE WORKERS!! They are HORRIBLE, RUDE, and UNPROFESSIONAL!!! Would never come here again. They judge you if you have different opinions on how you want to raise your dog and then if your opinion does differ from them (I.e. getting them fixed) they will not allow you to adopt . Which is ridiculous. Horrible place . Would not recommend it.
