I have been calling around the city doing research and checking out pricing and availability for transmission repair. I have placed three calls to Thunderbolt Transmission (Houston) to find out accurate pricing and warranty information on transmission rebuilt or replacement for my vehicle. The first call I made I was quoted $2,400. The next time I called I was quoted $2,900 with a 2 week turnaround, and the third time I called I was ready to make an appointment for repair and I was quoted 2,700 dollars with a 3 week turn around and added charges for computer parts that could not be divulged at the time of the call. In my conversation with sales representative Chris I was spoken to in such a combative derogative tone I was blown away. I have never had a confrontation via phone for inquiring direct accurate information from a business who provides a service to the community. This third phone call escalated very quickly. The sales representative asked me “Why have I called the business so many times and if he was me he would not be calling around to 500 different business to make a decision on where he was going to take his vehicle”. I then proceeded to explain to the combative sales rep my research for other opinions/ pricing and my concern on receiving different information each time I had called in with no confirmation on turn around time or exact pricing for the work I needed done. The sales rep continued to be combative with me stating that I just needed to bring the vehicle in to be looked at and there was no way he could give me accurate pricing. The sales rep proceeded to tell me I was not happy with his answer as to why I was having a hard time getting a direct answer for service for my transmission. In my communication with this company I was only a consumer looking for a quote and availability for transmission repair and I got spoken to like I was a child being reprimanded by their elder. I can not speak on their service however I can speak on their customer service and this was a first for being completely disrespected for absolutely no reason.Sent from my iPhone

I had TB install a full long block in my V8 F150. The truck runs like it is brand new. Rick, Chris, & Daryl were VERY patient with me. Btw, follow their exact instructions after install; for their warranty. 5 stars to TBolt.

Took my Mazdaspeed 3 there to get my engine replaced, engine was done and complete I give them that.The issues?A) Manual shift cable was caught on the engine, they denied it. Went to my other mechanic to have it fixed instead.B) Battery installation? Just look at the pictures and see for yourself.They placed a screw to make it fit.C) More adjustments had to be done by a more competent mechanic at another location at half the price.D) Over charged for a job that had to be redone and spent more money to fix it at another shop.Their prices dont match their quality and their customer service, very disappointed. Avoid this place at all costs.Update: I just want my money back

I took my work truck here because its so close to my shop. I strongly recommend you NEVER consider this place. I took it to get it my engine rebuilt and it blew a head in less then 15k miles. Barely used it for 8 months. $6k down the drain

I went there because the name popularity when I was growing up. Terrible idea. For the initial rebuild, they sent a towtruck driver about 5 to 6 days after I made the original callS... Yes, had to call a few times because of apparent confusion in their office. Of course: covid.. blah blah. So I finally received my car back about 4 weeks later after a few status calls once a week. When I talked to them, it was reported having a little trouble with a cylinder misfiring. However, the engine looked nice and it ran well once I received the vehicle. I drove the car gingerly for 3 weeks, had the 500 mile oil change and about a week later, one of the cylinders failed. I was getting an oxygen sensor reading from my fixed app. I had to pay a wrecker service to bring the vehicle back. Some 2 weeks later, the car was repaired again and I continued to drive it to work. After a few weeks, I got another engine warning light, checked my fixed app and it reported another cylinder failed... My engine has 8 cylinders so I am beginning to worry about the other 6. When I finally received the car back again they said your battery is dead. Dont stop anywhere except an auto parts store to get a new battery. Really? So they send their unhappy and worried customer off with a bad battery, bad alternator in the pouring rain to drive 20 miles to get home. Great service, eh? I elected to go ahead and take the car because at this point, I am really questioning their competence. I believe I will need to have an attorney involved if the car has another cylinder failure after paying more than $6500 for the original repair not mentioning all the down time with no car. I have to drive to work so this whole experience has been frustrating, time consuming and worry some. I would not recommend using this company.2nd edit: After your reply, another cylinder failed. Now cylinder 6 failed. This car has 8 cylinders. I have lost confidence it is possible to be repaired correctly at your shop.3rd edit: The car has now been to your shop for warranty repairs 3 times for a total of 12 weeks --> that is 3 months... The latest warranty repair my car has been in your shop 2 weeks now. I just called in for a status report. The car is ready for pickup, I was told. Then the gentleman explained the car was over-heating and it would no longer be covered under warranty. This is new news to me. I have never, since I owned the car from 2012, ever experienced the car over-heating. I returned the car this time because my FixD app told me cylinder 6 failed and they tell me on the phone after the repair that it over-heated. Thunderbolt performed a repair, I paid over $6500 and had to return the car to the shop for 3 warranty repairs and now I am being told it wont be covered under warranty because it over-heated? Absolutely not acceptable. If you dont want to cover your repairs under a warranty, you can plan on returning my money.4th edit: after picking up the vehicle from the shop and driving 20 minutes to my house, the car sat unused in my driveway for months. I started it to move it to the other side of the driveway to complete some yardwork. The car was running for approximately 1 minute and the check engine light came on with FIXD reporting another cylinder failure.TLDR: taking your vehicle to thunderbolt could possibly be the worst decision you could ever make. Be warned.

I showed up thinking I was dealing with a transmission problem and after a few questions they thought the issue was dirty fuel injectors as the plugs and coils were changed a couple years ago and should not have been needing replaced again. After running a diagnostic they sent me to the auto parts store to purchase a $9 can of fuel injector cleaner. Great group of men that I interacted with. More interested in helping out than selling me something I didnt need.

Did not use their service, talking to them three times they finally send me whats covered but see to vague on what they do on rebuilding the engine.All though the warranty was clear, I just did not like how the rebuilding was still very vague.

I was quoted $1690 with another $1000 for labor to remanufacture a 5.7L Vortec engine , was picked up on 1/5 finally call me 2/2 with inventory and price jumped to $6795 then deduct the $1000 I put down so would cost another $5795. I told them there was no way I could pay that much since it jumped up that much, the guy said Ill call you back with a minimum amountIF YOUR SALESMANS NAME IS ROBERT, HANG UP BECAUSE HE IS ABOUT TO LIE TO YOU TO GET THE SALE.He gave me a redacted price so went a head with repair. Was called to pick up vehicle, went get vehicle and a mechanic stood there and told me he said the had to have the injectors replaced (the $5795 cost) which if i would have been told that there was NO WAY the truck would run with lower price, I would have walked away him only dumping the $1000 down on the truck. So i go to leave in vehicle, stop for gas less than 5 miles away and the vehicle would not start again. Now i am FORCED to dump more money in the vehicle making the repair more than the vehicle is worth which is way i told Robert that the vehicle isnt worth paying for the repair.

Bought a 350 Chevy engine fromThem about 13 years agoAnd the head gasket finally gave out. Gave this engine hell from day one it was put in my truck. Especially those first three years about to slap some new head gaskets on it and give it some more

Do NOT use this place. My father went to change his engine, after charging $6500, he drove it off the lot, all electronics were broken and the car over heated after no more than 30 miles on the road. Save your car and wallet by going ANYWHERE ELSE.

My Hyundai started making a really loud noise one day and then just stopped. Thunderbolt put a new engine in and now my car runs great. I have family in town for Christmas and was asked if they were any good. I had no worries telling my family they did a good job! Merry Christmas!

Put a fresh motor in my hunting jeep. they had it up and running just in time for the season to start. must have been good luck because i bagged a 10 pointer on opening day!

Quoted a rate, in writing, for a new transmission. When the work was done and with no warning or approval, they charged us $1200 more! They did not care about the original quote. The work that was done appears to be quality and it was done quickly but that kind of price increase is not acceptable. We will not do business with them again and will spread the word of their business practices.

I had the worst experience with Thunderbolt motors. I had to bring the vehicle back multiple times because the cylinders kept going bad. The manager then tells me they changed there parts provider and that I will need to pay more money to get better parts. I had already paid above market price. My original cost was est $6000 but I paid a estimated $9000 when I finally got away from these crooks.They charged me for things that they never replaced, I had to purchase a rental car multiple times because of there failure to fix there created problem.& the managers act more like used car salesmen.Managers never offered any car rental help & the warranty had no valve when you had to use it. They drag there feet to repair.Thunderbold use to be great years ago but now they are just a money grab.I will never go back or recommend anyone.

I have been a long time customer and the Engines I have purchased for my vehicles have all been 100,000 mile + motors. All the machine work I have seen is race car quality, the staff is unmatched in Engine, transmission & parts knowledge. I highly recommend Thunderbolt Products for any rebuilt motor or transmission.

GREEDY. The excuse is that they’re slammed. You shouldn’t take on cars you know you can’t fix in the time frame you quoted. Get it together, before you take peoples cars and money.

Terrible terrible service. They did a very poor job explaining what they were going to do and now we are out 800 dollars. They quoted 4500 to fix at first and it went to 8000 after they had my car and they say we cant get any of the deposit back. DO NOT GO!!!

We had the worst experience with this place! We had originally had the motor in my truck replaced all was fine then and just a few months go by and my truck started giving us trouble, come to find out they did not replace the distributor, the more disappointing thing is they charge me for it too!!! We had to get our truck towed multiple times to this place (WHICH WAS NOT CHEAP!!)so they could figure out what else was still wrong and every time WE would fix what they told us was wrong something else would need to be fixed or replaced. Another thing they would never call me to update me on the status of my vehicle days would go by and they would give me excuses to why my vehicle hasnt even been worked on. We had originally chose to come to this place because if its length of time it has been open but that was a mistake. I DO NOT RECOMMEND BRINGING YOUR VEHICLE HERE! My truck is still not running. This place is VERY disappointing.

Also goes by Precision Engines. Hopefully their engine rebuilding skills and warranty are okay. The rebuild took several weeks longer than originally promised, and the motor is leaking oil my first week with the vehicle back. Customer service and communication is not their strong point. John was nice though.

Not bad for rebuild transmission

Thunderbolt has remanufacutred the engine and transmission in my 06 Expedition. The engine now has over 100,000 miles and still runs strong and the transmission has nice firm shifts. I even had the transmission shop upgrade my transmission fluid cooler and modify the lines for added longevity. Worth every penny. DISCLAIMER-I am an employee, but I am also a customer. The process wasnt any different for me than it is for any other customer. I had to look at my outside accessories (spark plugs, belts hoses, etc.) and replace some additional parts that were already in need of replacement just like anyone else and even declined some parts that I replaced at a later time. Thunderbolt has some great guys working here that know what theyre doing. I do not set the standard, by any means, when it comes to preventative maintenance and can admit that I have gone over on my oil changes several times. The fact that I have over 100k miles and have abused that motor is a testament to the quality Thunderbolt produces and is one of many reasons why I still work here.

I wish I had done my due diligence and read the reviews about this company before trusting them to rebuild my husbands transmission. On February 4, he turned in his Pathfinder to get his transmission rebuilt based on the estimate that the average turnaround time was 7-10 days. On February 12, he contacted the salesman who told him that he was unsure of how much longer the repair would take because he didnt have the teardown order in front of him. 2 days later (on the day we anticipated having it back because of the original time estimate), the salesman called to let him know that additional work would be required and it would be an extra $1000. My husband authorized the work. 5 days later my husband called again and was told by the salesman that it should be done in the next day or two. 6 days later, on February 25th, after an additional phone call, we received word that the vehicle was ready. He picked it up that day (paid $4998), and realized the next day that the transmission is worse now than when he turned it in on February 4, like they had done no work at all. So the day after picking it up, after they had it for 21 days, his car is back in the shop again and they will check it out and call in a day or 2. (And they havent). Very poor customer service and workmanship!! We trusted them to fix our vehicle based on their number of years in business, thinking they had to be reputable. I really should have read the negative reviews. Dont be fooled! Take your vehicle somewhere else!Update--the company did make good on their promise to fix my husbands SUV properly. It took an additional 2 weeks from the time it was returned, but Im happy to report that it now runs great!

Wonderful shop with lovely, friendly people. I made an appointment they worked me in and finished in about an hour. Turns out all I needed was a simple change. These guys have been doing transmission work for years so I trust them! They are very amazing and wonderful highly recommend

There is a reason this place has been in business for 86 years.Great service & customer service, did everything they could do, after Hyundai failed. Thank you for getting me mobile again. So here it is alittle over a year and my Turbo is not engaging and blowing clouds of smoke out the exhaust pipe, and they arent answering my calls or calling me back. .

Took my truck to get a motor rebuild around income tax season , which was a very busy time for them . Took them roughly about two to three months to get it back. Now for the people that dont know about motors it takes time , taken apart and putting it back together , making sure everything works properly. They gave me a rough estimate of how much it would cost , so keep in mind that the price will go up due to parts . The reason I give em four out of five stars is that when I got my truck back , the back window motor was broke and would not roll back up. I cant say that the mechanics broke it , but it wasnt like that when they picked it up. Other than that they did a good job on the rebuild.

Deceptive, dishonest, unreasonably slow. I have filed a BBB complaint against Thunderbolt for the horrendous treatment I received. I signed a contract and paid $1000 deposit to have an engine rebuilt on 7/5/19 (spoke to Robert). I called on 7/10/19 to check status of the repair and was told by Robert that the vehicle had not been picked up by their tower yet. He said that the vehicle would be towed on 7/11/19, and that I should expect work to be complete in 2 1/2 - 3 weeks. I called to check status on repairs again on 7/26/19 and was told that work had not yet begun. The mechanic that I was transferred to stated that they would begin the work by 7/31/19. I called a fourth time on 8/1/19; the mechanic that I was transferred to stated that work had not yet begun. I presented to the business on 8/2/19 and asked to see my vehicle. I was told that the vehicle was being worked on at their mechanics personal residence and was not on site. Their contract does not state that vehicles would be stored at private residences, nor was I informed that this was occurring. I then asked for a refund of my deposit and stated that another shop would retrieve my vehicle. I was given the mechanics personal address; the new shop drove there (instead of where I expected my vehicle to be) in order to tow my vehicle away. Thunderbolt failed to provide any service to my vehicle and did not notify me that my vehicle was not being housed at their proper business location. John did stick me with $150 towing fee and refunded the rest as a courtesy per Skips reply to my BBB complaint--I never met the man; he states in the reply that he was not on site for any of this, yet he submitted the official BBB response from Thunderbolt. Stay away from this business; their office staff is useless and shady. Dont believe any replies made to my post from their representative; I dont know how they manage to treat so many so badly and expect to give a canned response to make anything better--read the other Google replies; youll see a pattern with these guys.

My boyfriend and I have been building my engine for my Honda Civic type r. Took the blueprints here and the guys got to working. When they were finish and installed my new engine in. My baby was purring!!! Drive very smoothly! I highly recommend the service here. They will listen and the price is really fair.

Thunderbolt put a new 5.3 in my chevy. they even got rid of the v4 v8 thing the engine does. i had to ask for that upgrade and im glad i did. runs better then before.

From the beginning of the service to the end the mechanic there were honest, straightforward, and kept me informed of any issues that were discovered when repairing the main issue. I have to say that they care for their customers! Best engine rebuilders are here! The most reasonable and trustworthy business that I havent seen in a very long time. I have to thank them for taking good care of my vehicle.

As a young child I always remembered the jingle and always thought this was the right place to repair a motor and transmission when the time came. They were very nice and gave me a great deal for both! The only word of caution is when they call (and they will) about the extra work they will need to perform. I hastily agreed to the $2000 extra in work but thought about it overnight and decided against it. I was told even though 12 hours had not past that I would have to pay a 25% restocking fee as the parts are ordered the second I agreed. I could not stomach losing $500 dollars so I told them to just repair as agreed. I would suggest to have them give you a list of what needs to be repaired and get a second opinion before agreeing. The motor and transmission work great, but my wallet is running on empty...

Thunderbolt has rebuilt the 350 in my 99 chevy truck and just recently rebuilt the 5.3 in my 06 chevy truck. Both engines run good. The 99 chevy has over 150000 miles on it now and still runs good which is why i had no problem letting them do the engine in my 06.

Took my car to this shop which was recommended by a friend. I was surprise to find very friendly employees and very helpful. They explained what was going to take place in full and in words I could understand. I left my car there knowing what was going to be done. I know where I will take my car the next time I need an engine or transmission check up,

I have had my 2002 suburban back from Thunderbolt for 4 months and I am very happy with the work. They did an engine and transmission on my suburban. I was quoted 5 grand for the deal and paid 7500 but I had the heads ported and polished and they replaced a bunch of stuff that I had paid another shop to replace months before. The other shop ripped me off. Steve and Darrell let me know far in advance that my 246,000 mile vehicle needed many new parts. I was never in the dark. Sometimes people should pay very close attention when someone speaks to you in regards to your vehicle. I said all that to say this My new engine and trans have about 3500 miles on them and they run and sound great. Will do business again for other vehicles!!!

This place is TRASH! Put a motor in and my Ac and Transmission stop working. You would do better finding a local crackhead to work on your vehicle.

I would recommend everyone to do their oil changes and regular maintenance on their cars. If you don’t it is very expensive to replace an engine. Thunderbolt made the experience a lot easier to deal with.

In for warranty check on transmission. Issue resolved at check and didnt require leaving car for additional service.

The guy rebuilding my engine was very friendly and the blue print I saw matched what I wanted. Replaced the bearings, gaskets, seals and valve springs. Which I needed them to replace and now my 09 Ford escape is running so much better!

Terrible customer service!! John is rude, and neglected to send a quote after promising to do so on four occasions. When I called regarding the quote, he yelled at me and said he wouldn’t work on my car. So glad I had the car towed away to another service shop where they appreciate the business. STAY AWAY from Thunderbolt!Response to the response below:The email was never received, and I have no trouble with my email. There was no “discussion”; there was no offer to mail the quote, and John talked over my suggestion to send a photo of the quote via text. John wouldn’t stop talking long enough to listen. His behavior was absolutely appalling. The response does not even recognize the problems that exist there which only affirms my initial recommendation to STAY AWAY from Thunderbolt!

My husband and I agreed to pay an $800 down payment for our nephew who had just started a new job and hadnt been paid yet. My husband called Thunderbolt and provided our credit card information. They said it would take 3-5 days and would be around $2700 total. My husband called them several times over the next few weeks asking for a status and any changes to the estimate but they would not return his calls. Seven weeks later I was shocked to find out that my credit card had an additional charge of over $3600, without any authorization from myself or my husband. When we called to complain they lied to us and told us our nephew had shown up and swiped our credit card. Our nephew wasnt even in Houston at the time and did not have our credit card. It turns out our nephews girlfriend (stay at home mother of a 3 year old and 6 month old) called them and was told the car was ready to be picked up. She went with her dad and Thunderbolt asked her to sign a piece of paper to show she picked up the car. They are now claiming that she committed fraud by signing the paper and have threatened to have her arrested if we dont pay the bill. My husband has tried to talk with them several times to work this out but they have refused. So, not only have they kept our credit card information on file (we did not give them permission), something most reputable businesses would never do, they wont even set up a payment plan for our nephew. Its all or nothing for them. Please be very careful if you decide to do any business with them.

After they took two weeks looking at my truck, they told me they would need me to pay over $8000. When I told them that was too much they wouldnt give me my deposit back. They gave me my truck back all in pieces. They put the engine in the back of my truck. They wouldnt do anything to help me out after that and were rude the entire time. I would not recommend this place to my worst enemy. They are bad people, just working people out of money. Do not give them the time of day.

Took my truck here to get the engine rebuild from scratch. The price they gave me was reasonable after confirming it with my dad and boyfriend. When they finally finish, my truck was roaring so beautiful!

Dude told my buddy that he disassembled his own axle and tired to blame the shop oh and he supposedly drove 30miles with a rear axle that was taken apart.

Highly recommend them! They did a great job, communicated very well with me, did excellent repair. Great pricing too!
