It was really really unfortunate that I did not get to experience the Lotus Garden to its full capacity. It had looked fantastic on its website, the location couldnt be better, and the payment process was easy over the website.Unfortunately, I arrived at the location of this hotel with my family of 5 around 8pm in the evening of 28th December and apparently there were no rooms available even though I had paid for it.The owner had explained that his wife who usually manages the website was absent and so it did not update it to say no vacancy. As this was Hilo in December, all other places had no vacancy and my family were almost turned away to stay in the car for the night. The owner offered a refund.Luckily someone else overhearing the conversation (possibly his son?) suggested that we could use one of their private rooms that was unused. My family was very thankful for this solution and the owner agreed and provided the room and some extra beds and pillows for my family. The room was more of an attic turned into a bedroom and the window did not close properly so it was open all night. Although not as comfortable as we expected, we still generally enjoyed our stay here. The owner also offered to still pay back some of the cost, though this was not specified how much. It has now been a few months ago and I have checked all my statements and I have not received any payment back yet. However, since and I honestly dont want to bother with getting my money back so I decided I would give a review and a lower rating instead.Thank you for letting us stay, it was unfortunate that we could not experience it to its greatest capacity.

This place captures the laid back and relaxed feeling of Hilo and protects you from feeling like youre staying so close to the street by using a layer of commercial units and a garden wall as a shield. This particular room has a lot of open air design features, but has all the necessary tools in place to keep the mosquitos away during your sleep. Hilo is notorious for mildew, but the space is virtually clear of that, and feels quite dry all around (even the bathroom). Rain on the corrugated ceiling was soothing and romantic. Street parking was easy. A surprise delivery of a french press with coffee grounds was a great touch on an already first class experience. This is a historical compound that has been remodeled by the owners over the last 20 years. The outside is unique and a little bit strange, but the inside is clean, classy, and worth the visit.

I really loved my week at this little hidden gem of a place. It was clean, comfortable, well equipped and convenient to walk to everything in downtown Hilo. We explored shops, restaurants, ran along the oceanfront and park paths, visited a museum, learned about local life and got some recommendations for interesting things to do and see around Hilo and the whole island. This is the place if you like a laid back vibe and want to blend in. 100% would go again! Thanks Megan and Jasper for the coffee and your gracious hospitality!

This place doesnt look like much on the outside but it was a cute little oasis of cottages inside the compound. There was very little security, which was a bit concerning at first, but we quickly got the sense that crime wasnt really a problem. It was clean, the staff were friendly and it was right in the heart of Hilo. Id definitely stay again.

Good price. Friendly host who brought coffee to us in the morning. We stayed in an upstairs unit with 3 bedrooms, one of which was outside main unit, which was not a problem. There is a toilet and sink inside. The shower, however, was outside--we were only there for a night, and did not use the shower. 2 of us had showered in the morning, and the inconvenience of an outdoor shower outweighed the desire for a shower. Beware aware that the moist environment of HIlo means that you need to keep windows and doors closed to avoid mosquito bites.

We missed the 14 day window on Airbnb so leaving the review here. We stayed two nights in the Attic room of the Sugar Shack. Super romantic place and very comfortable room, with amazing light. The noises at night and atmosphere of the Lotus Garden make you feel like you are sleeping in the middle of the rainforest, yet you are lying down in a comfy king size bed. The hosts Megan and Jasper are very friendly and not intrusive at all. They left a fresh bottle of milk for our coffee at our doorstep, so nice. Also, we really like the fact that the place is eco friendly.
