The cottage was beautiful! It had such a romantic feel and there were lots of personal touches that were appreciated. I surprised my boyfriend with this trip for his birthday and we both had an amazing time. There’s a pond on the property that’s great for fishing. We caught so many fish! I definitely would recommend this to any couple looking for a cute getaway.

Our family had the pleasure of staying in the Water Lily and Mountain Laurel studios this past weekend. What a delight. All the essentials were waiting for us as well as all the little extra touches that make this property so special. The bedding was so cozy and comfortable. The porches had nice furniture which we used to the fullest looking out over the pond and listening to the birds. The kitchen had everything we needed, and the shower was so nice - we even had bathrobes waiting for us! The owners are so accommodating too! We will be back over and over when we come to visit family in the area! Thank you for everything Dennis and Janice!

This is such a great place to stay for work or travel. Property is very well managed and professional. The Water Lily suite was a great place to stay. This place would be perfect for a couples getaway or for bigger groups and family vacations. There were bigger suites and the full manor which looked great, but I didnt need a full house. Great location being close to downtown and close to the Shenandoah National Park as well as many other outdoor adventures. Would most definitely stay here again.

We have been guests at many B&Bs over the years and each one has had its own particular charm and ambience. However, the affinity to detail and personal attention provided us with a comfort level that was outstanding and a cut above the usual that one would expect. Our stay was for three nights at one of the cottages. From the moment we walked through the door we were greeted by a soft instrumental melody that transported us from our normal day to day activities to another world that allowed us to take in and appreciate the day and set the tone for the rest of our stay at By the Side of the Road Inn & Cottages. An outstanding breakfast was brought to our door each day by our innkeeper, Dennis Fitzgerald, and were prepared by his wife Janice who must have been a master chef in another life. After our daily travels there were wine cordials awaiting us as we got back to our cottage after dinner. We enjoyed them as we sat on the front porch and viewed the scenery along with our new friend Max, a small, young kitten who fit neatly on our laps. Our getaway was not exactly what we had expected, only much more and a temptation to return another time. Heartily recommended for a romantic environment and change of pace from the usual and made so due to the above reflections and hospitality of the innkeepers.Richard & Robinette George

Breakfast was delivered to our door each morning and it was scrumptious. It was a bit smaller than expected, but delicious none the less. We did miss out a little bit by not staying in the main house because we did not have a chance to interact at all with the other guests or the owners but the privacy of our own cottage took the bed and breakfast idea to a new level. Included in our stay was a cheese basket to take with us to the vineyards. Again is was smaller than expected but a nice additional touch. Having stayed at By the Side of the Road several times in the past, we knew our recent get-away would be a treat but it even exceeded our expectations. We stayed in the Mountain Laurel suite...across the pond from the main house; its beautiful. From the great shower to the comfortable bed to the private porch over-looking the pond and everything in-between, it was wonderful. We have previously stayed in several of the main house suites and a couple of the cottages and were very pleased; but the setting of the Spring Water Suites, over-looking the pond, is total tranquility. Then throw in that awesome gourmet breakfast and you pretty much have a perfect get-away. Janice and Dennis are wonderful inn-keepers and its quite obvious they are doing what they were called to do. From the comfortable accomodations to the great service they provide, they have truly carved out a beautiful retreat By the Side of the Road.

By the Side of the Road Inn & Cottages is a very nice place for a nearby getaway. We stayed in a cottage, the Mountain Laurel Suite in April of 2013. I do not have experience with the Manor House, we only went there to check out. The property is next to a neighborhood type road, and the Mountain Laurel Suite is in one of 2 cottages across from the house on the other side of a little pond. If your suite is the closest to the road, you may hear cars going by. But where we stayed we could not hear them or see much of the road, just peaceful views of the pond. The cottage is not a bed and breakfast type of stay. A simple breakfast is provided, but its really about having a very private quiet and relaxing time. There are no activities on the property as far as I know. The cottage has TV / DVD player, coffeemaker and microwave with a small refrigerator. Its a perfect place to get away and relax.

My gosh where do you start. The place is absolutely amazing and awesome. Its a beautiful old Inn and my room the 1790 room it was so cool. There is so many fun amenities like a walk out balcony from the bedroom. Its the actual old roof and under the highest roof area. Really cool. Also some convenient options a microwave and refrigerator is available right outside your door. Ice buckets are in the freezer for your fun use. The room was beautiful and feels so historical. I was meeting my family for some fun Jeep off roading near here. The owner Dennis was so cool and let me meet him earlier and get my keys. But he didnt charge me for a early check in. He showed me all the delivery places as I would have a late arrival after my fun family day. So got pizza and wings delivery. Also lots of other options for those that have a particular pallet. It has the possibility of paranormal activity as it was a Civil War hospital. Many people have experienced cool things here. It has a peaceful vibe and is very welcoming. I cant speak for everyone and cover all the nice things this visit is to everyone. However most likely you will love this historical place and feel loved by the family that owns it. God bless all and good luck on your stays. Rob Hunt.

(( Review trimmed to essentials ))The Mountain Laurel Suite was lovely, breakfast was delicious and extra touches (chocolate, port, champagne, stocked fridge) made for a special 10 year anniversary and long-overdue JMU homecoming. There was tons to do for local entertainment / tourism, and amazing restaurants in Court Square. 5 stars! That said, we couldve skipped your assertion that immigrants in subsidized housing on food stamps caused the citys recent population spike.Believe me, 9,000 Mexicans didnt suddenly decide to freeload in your remote, podunk college town that is rife with ignorant, racist locals.I dont regret spending the $370 on an awesome weekend, but frankly, we left your place very upset. I recommend you make the checkout chat optional going forward and dont go there with any future guests.------------------------------------------------new comments:Yes, you deserve 5 stars for the facilities, food and service...top notch. Minus 2 for the weirdness. We were reacting to your assertion on immigration (above), your elaboration on the topic, and your obvious displeasure. If you did not believe that position re immigrants, then your words confused us both, independently, and led us to the same conclusion, independently. Things got weird when my wife revealed shes an immigrant. It put a poor context on your comments re her obvious accent and her fortunate naturalization status.I used to live here in the mid-90s and although a Friendly City, its absolutely fair to note theres palpable racism everywhere in the rural South, and sometimes its expected to be politely dismissed. My point above was not election fallout or salt in an old wound. What I heard begged my response that Mexican immigrants are hard workers following jobs, not random freeloaders on subsidized housing and food stamps. We both left speechless/shocked, got to the car then said to each other, What the heck just happened in there?! Weve traveled together all over the world and this was a first.

My husband and I had the opportunity of utilizing a groupon voucher to venture out to Harrisonburg VA and have a 2 night stay at By the Side of the Road Inn & Cottages. We had never been out that way and found the area of the Inn to be rather interesting when we pulled up (we were expecting something a bit more secluded). Our stay turned out to be rather enjoyable and the accomodations were wonderful. We stayed in one of the spring water suites and it was well furnished and we enjoyed having a small back deck overlooking the pond. The traffic on the road once inside really didnt bother us much at all. The proximity of the Inn to area attractions was wonderful and there are some good local restaurants to try. The breakfast provided was very tasty. I ended up chatting with one of the Inn keepers during checkout and she was very nice. Overall it was a good trip. I do have to say that furniture wise, at times it was a bit uncomfortable (the two chairs in front of TV could be a bit more comfortable and bed seemed too soft, but sheets were great) but we really werent in the room too much to have it be of any issue. Would probably visit again if the opportunity came up.

What we loved most was the fact that we didnt have to get dressed to get breakfast, as it was brought right to our door in a basket. The only down side to that is, should you wake up early and hungry, you better have snacks in the room with you since breakfast is delivered at certain times. I believe for us in the cottage, breakfast was delivered around 9:00. Breakfast alternated each day between sweet and savory. The cottage is cute and split down the middle where the bed/living/dining area is on one side and the bathroom/tub/shower on the other. A little too cozy with the open ceiling when you or your partner need to use the bathroom. We just turned on the music to have a little privacy. Some complained that the inn was too close to the road. Um...look at the name, should be no surprise there. We barely heard any traffic...not the busiest street. We loved the area. Harrisonburg is easy to navigate and there is plenty to do. I was able to get three rounds of golf in. The course I enjoyed the most was right down the road. My wife was able to get some much needed pampering at a local spa. There are plenty of places to eat nearby, and the cottage is equipped with a microwave and small refrigerator for any leftovers you may have. The room also has the essentials...tv, dvd player, radio w/ cd player and usb hook up, coffee maker, etc. The Inns owners make the experience even more comfortable by littering the entire property with beautiful aspects of their family. Upon entry into our cottage, we were greeted by beautiful family pictures that gave the place an even more, home away from home feel. The owners and inn keepers are there if you need them, willing to give you a tour and answer any questions you might have. However if you want to be left alone, you wouldnt even know they were there. James Madison University is close by, however this felt nothing like a college town. We would definitely go back!

Hubby & I dont get away much & we needed some much needed R & R-OMG this place was perfect, more than we could have asked for. We entered our cottage to soft music playing, A personalized welcome plate, candles in the windows, small porch w/2 chairs, sm. table & an ashtray. Inside gas fireplace, tv, books, treats, microwave, sm. frig. The bathroom was to die for. Lg. 2 person spa tub. candles. lighter, robes, slippers & bath supplies. The fireplace can be seen/felt in both rooms. The bed was super comfy. The breakfasts were delivered to us in a picnic basket-they were hot & yummy . We spent the majority of our time in our room & enjoyed every minute of it. The staff was super friendly & couldnt have been more accomadating. The cottage was spotless; tastefully decorated & so cozy.cant wait to return!!!

In truth I want to have more time to visit Harrisonburg Virginia and be able to know many more places than there was opportunity to be in these passes on holiday December. I hope that for the next time, which will probably be in the summer, I can meet beautiful places like this and see the opinions written here.
