I do not recommend working at this Jacobs office if you are a mechanical engineer.I worked at CH2M in the Upstate prior to the company being acquired by Jacobs. The department supervisor, Charlie Funk, misrepresented the position that I took in the job posting and at the interview. He described it as a Mechanical Engineer II position and talked about me taking the PE exam. However, the position was in reality a CAD drafter position. I was not given mechanical engineering work in my two years with the company. There were drafting positions posted by the company that matched up with my role.Other engineers in the department were also being used as AutoCAD drafters. This indicates Mr. Funk likes to fill drafting positions with engineers. It was not a big mistake.I asked the department supervisor on several occasions if I could be given mechanical engineering work. He tried to spin the drafting work as engineering work. In one instance, he hung up the phone on me. In another instance, he sneered at me to be careful what you ask for.I did not understand why a mechanical engineer should be careful about asking for mechanical engineering work. This comment indicates Mr. Funk is irrational and disrespectful.A senior mechanical engineer, Eli Espiritu, warned me not to ask Mr. Funk for mechanical engineering work. His point was that if I kept asking, Mr. Funk would let me go. Mr. Funk had apparently complained about me to him.Mr. Funk appeared to view our relationship as a master-slave arrangement rather than a mutually agreed upon partnership. In my annual performance review, I documented that I was not given the opportunity to do the engineering work described in the job posting for my position. A week later, Mr. Funk selected me for a layoff.I was one of only two employees in the department to be laid off. A senior mechanical engineer implied that Mr. Funk selected me for the layoff because I wanted to get engineering work experience. The code of ethics for the National Society of Professional Engineers states that engineers shall not attempt to attract an engineer from another employer by false or misleading pretenses. An employer misrepresenting a job is a specific crime in some states called fraudulent inducement of employment.Mr. Funk is the most silent, unfriendly, and uptight man that I have met in my life. Several engineers at the company made similar comments about his personality. I did not feel comfortable approaching him. He did not speak to me.I reported Mr. Funks silent and hostile behavior to people at this company after I left. He smeared me as a liar.If I had access to the companys project drawings, I could prove that I was used as a drafter for two years. Mr. Funk cannot retrieve any engineering document with my name on it.Using a mechanical engineer as a drafter is analogous to a medical practice using a physician as a nurse. It is disrespectful to the engineer and the profession in general.
