The staff was very helpful and friendly! The wait at the Fairbanks Airport for a cab to the location took about 45 minutes and the staff at Alaska Auto were very patient and offered to stay later than needed. I declined and they had me do an “after hour” pick up. Super easy and efficient! Upon return it was quick and easy! Just what you need when traveling! Thank you!! The vehicle was nice and clean and in great running condition. Plenty of room for all my bags and my kids.

I cannot get over how wonderful my experience was with this company! Quinn was so incredibly helpful and courteous; the car we received was very nice and pickup/drop off was so convenient, even with the weird hours we had to do so when flying in and out of Anchorage. I would rent from them again in a heartbeat!

Make sure you check the fine print! I was so excited to find a rental agency that had a vehicle for me. Nobody told me that I would be charged an extra day for dropping off the vehicle at 0730 instead of 0100 which marked the end of a 24 hour cycle.... with current rental rates I was completely shocked when I wasn’t refunded the entire deposit amount! When I explained that I wasn’t informed about this policy, in short I was told “you signed the contract and it is on there”. As a frequent traveler to the beautiful state of Alaska I recommend finding a vehicle anywhere else.

Worst rental car experience ever. They kept changing the plan. First the agreement was going to be in the car waiting at the airport. Then I had to access the agreement from my email to find the car at the airport. Then they sent someone elses rental agreement to me (all the while not answering the phone). Then they admitted the car was not at the agreed upon location, but they would send someone to come get me and bring me to the rental car office so I could sign some paperwork.... Also never part of the plan. I took a cab to Enterprise, and the process was more expensive, but much easier. Enterprise never made me supply a copy of my full-coverage insurance documents, and they sure didnt send someone elses rental itinerary to me.

The car I rented was 10 years old. Not modern, no updated features and significantly more expensive than traditional rentals. I asked to sign all the paperwork prior to seeing the car. I drove off after the external inspection turned around after a quarter mile because I was not happy with the rental. I was gone for approximately three minutes and was told I could not cancel the rental because I signed the rental agreement and The minimum rental is 24 hours. I was forced to pay for an entire day for a car that was sub par. I would not recommend this rental agency.

For the past several years I help run an annual conference with speakers from out of state. Alaska Auto Rental has become our go-to rental company to provide vehicles for our speakers. The staff are friendly and have been consistently accommodating to our (sometimes obscure) pick-up and drop-off requests. Their cars come clean and Alaskan-ready, which comforts some of our out of state guests who are often less familiar with driving on icy roads than Fairbanks locals. The prices are fair, but its our history of positive experiences that keeps us coming back.

If you want to use credit card or personal insurance to cover the car rental. This one is definitely a wrong choose. They will not tell you the windshield will crack with 25% possibility. And they will charge you with $500 simply without giving you any itemized estimate of repair. Then the credit card and insurance company will not expense the cost for you.

Alaska Auto Rental will always be my Alaskan car rental choice! The staff is friendly, hospitable, and helpful with rental concerns and information about tours and things in the surrounding area.I trust their cars in harsh winter conditions because they are all winterized (winter tires, engine block heater, auto-start, etc). It gives me peace of mind knowing that if I have an issue with my vehicle, they will go above and beyond to make sure that I’m safe and that the issue will be resolved.Family-owned and operated, this is my only choice for quality rentals in Fairbanks and the surrounding areas.

Outside temps were -40 so I couldnt stay out for long periods of time but the suburban had a great heater and got me warmed up quickly so I could get back out and see more. My wife and I packed in as much as we could during our bucket-list Alaska vacation. Alaska Auto provided great option to get from Anchorage to Fairbanks in time to take noon flight-seeing tour to Arctic Circle and catch our evening flight out to Seattle. Car was delivered to our hotel in Anchorage. We dropped off car at long term parking lot at Fairbanks airport. All paper work done electronically. Communication via phone, email and even text was timely and efficient. Alaska Auto is a great alternative to train or bus if heading to/from Anchorage and Fairbanks.

The car was fine, but the company is horrible to deal with, We booked way in advance and had to jump through so many hoops that we would have cancelled if there had been any other option. We sent them everything they asked for, then while we were at the beginning of our trip they asked for more paperwork (insurance declaration page) and said that it was a state requirement. The problem was, all of our insurance documents were in Maine and we had to get several people at home to get this document (which we were later told was unnecessary and not a state law). One of the office people was very rude. We were never told about a cleaning fee so were quite surprised after paying an exorbitant fee for rental for three days, we were then hit with a $50 cleaning fee (we had left the car absolutely clean--just normal road dust). The car was not left for pick-up where we were told it would be, so we wasted a lot of time and phone calls trying to ascertain the location. A clerk at the train depot said that they hear frequent complaints about this problem for that company.

We recently rented a 12 passenger van from Alaska Auto Rental. It was fairly easy renting the van and getting confirmation via email. We did a one-way rental from Fairbanks to Anchorage. The first problem was finding out there was no shuttle from the airport with Alaska Auto Rental so we had to get a taxi. It was a short way so we overlooked that. Then they show us the van to go over the condition of van. The van was very dented and dinged and had two huge dings in the windshield. The back bumper of the van was also covered in paint and/ or epoxy. It was not very nice inside but again we overlooked the inside and outside condition knowing that the roads in Alaska can cause a lot of dings and dents. The next problem was after we unloaded all of the luggage and went to lock the van, the side doors lock was broken. We should have called but again we went with it. When we had luggage in the van and we stopped someone had to stay with the van. In Anchorage the rental gets turned into Alaska Auto Park so no one really looks it over at the time you turn it in. But it didnt take long for a receipt to be emailed. Much to our surprise there was a $500 extra charge for windshield replacement! We immediately called and had to leave a message for a return call. When person called back from Alaska Auto Rental he acted like he had no information from Fairbanks about the condition report that we had gone over when we picked up the van. Im not sure of his name but he asked me if I had a video to prove the windshield was already damaged! I said no but it was on the paperwork. He said he didnt have access to that and he would have to call Fairbanks. The $500 charge was taken off about an hour later. All and all our experience with Alaska Auto Rental was not totally a good one. We paid a lot of money for a not so great van and then they tried to charged us more money.Update!!We were recently contacted by management to discuss our complaints and improve the issues we had experienced. We would like to thank Alaska Auto Rental for this quick response and willingness to reach out in order to resolve these issues. For our troubles they gave us a substantial refund and we are very appreciative!

I will highly recommend Alaska Auto Rental. I had been to Fairbanks to take photos of the northern lights. This trip was not only my first visiting the United States but also a maiden driving in winter season in foreign country. In Japan, we usually drive cars equipped with winter tires in winter season, so I decided to choice a shop which could offer winter tires. But lots of shops I had contacted did not offer them in Fairbanks except Alaska Auto Rental. This is very important for first visitors in Fairbanks in winter season. And that, Alaska Auto Rental is a extremely scrupulous and conscientious renting cars company. I had broken the door handle because the door was locked when I was outside. This was completely my fault and carelessness, but they had chosen to not charge me for the damage. I do really appreciate their kindness. Thank you so much!!

Great experience renting through Alaska Auto Rental during a recent trip to Fairbanks (March, 2019). I always prefer to rent from an independent business rather than one of the national car rental chains, and had confidence knowing that my vehical was properly winterized. While I may have preferred an AWD vs FWD, the FWD car (intermediate class) handled the roads well even with snow and ice. Booking online was simple, my specific pick up and drop of time requests were met, and the staff I spoke with over the phone and in person were super helpful. I would rent from Alaska Auto Rental again and recommend to others.

(Translated with Google Translate)I have rented a car from Alaska Auto Rental to drive the Dalton Highway. I am 29 years old and I come from the Netherlands my English is pretty bad. At home I had read a lot about this special road (Dalton Hwy). Since I unfortunately could not rent a car at Northern Alaska Tour Company because I was not yet 30 years old, I could only rent a car at Alaska Auto Rental. I knew that renting a car for this gravel road was expensive and I agreed with that. Only what I found very annoying was that after termination of the ride the costs were many times higher, which had not been agreed in advance. Furthermore, I had to pay extra for the extra miles that I had driven, only that amount turned out to be higher than the agreement.I found the two men who provided the service very inhospitable. It seemed like they just liked to make a living out of you and I did not think that was absolutely right. The service was just bad and they were also difficult about the way of paying. Luckily, nothing happened on the way, otherwise I would have been sorry, and they had me completely financial. Only there was a small crack in the window where they could earn well.Alaska Auto Rental partially destroyed my holiday because I had a bad feeling about it. Thats why I give them 1 star!

The people who work here are nice, they offered to pick me up and drop me back off at the airport pretty good service there, despite that i was a little disappointed because i placed a reservation for a car rental 3 months in advance and in they automatically charged me there, I was upset that back in june they said the car can be driven with unlimited miles when i got there to pick up the car they said i have 1000 miles and that kinda blew my plans away as i was planning to drive to anchorage but couldnt because it was gonna be 700 miles driving and coming back and I also had other plans to drive to! Overall I would recommend renting a car here but be prepared to pay the reservation all at once and get 1000 miles! If they improve there mileage plan to 1500 or unlimited they would be a outstanding business but charging quite a bit with only 1000 miles total? Thats kinda not cool. Peter and his co worker are cool and friendly so dont be shy!

Recommended! We visited Fairbanks over Christmas, and Alaska Auto Rentals provided us with a reasonably priced properly equipped (snow tires, engine block heater, 4WD) clean and low mileage vehicle that got us around nicely in a week with lots of snowfall. We chose them based on the recommendation of the dog mushers we planned to visit outside of town (Black Spruce - also recommended!). Wed originally booked a Rav-4 type SUV, but about a week before the trip the office called and asked if wed take a free upgrade to a full size truck, which worked out great for our family of four including two 6+ boys. We felt very Alaskan driving around in that! Service was friendly, flexible, and efficient, and I like that theyre local.

We planned our trip to Fairbanks in December after we were able to find a car rental company(spoke to Quinn at Alaska) that would guarantee a car that would have AWD or 4WD. We first called two nationally known companies and their response was that not only could they not guarantee that but no one would! When we picked up the car from Alaska car Rental the guys were funny, nice and helpful. Our only complaint was when the dodge locked us out of the vehicle with the new technology of prestarting the car, we got a recording for the emergency number at Alaska and the temperature was -9! By the time Carl called us back over an hour later, AAA arrived to get us back into the warmth of the car. Everything else worked great. Despite that hiccup during our trip, we have to add that we will definitely use their rentals again because of their outstanding service to us the rest of the trip. Quinn is an absolute jewel, as was his boss, Wyatt and accommodated our extra requests as we returned their vehicle. Thanks again Alaska Car Rentals et al....Jo

The SUV we got was not as new as you could get from those big car rental companies but it was in good condition. We end up paying about 500$ for that one day trip. We have rented from AAR twice in the last three years for our December trips for aurora photography. One rental was the RAV4, the other a Camry. We decided to go ahead and pay more to rent with AAR (nearly twice as much as what can be found at the airport) because of the true winter tires and other items that made the vehicles truly winterized, and dont regret the decision. RAV4 performed slightly better than the Camry, being AWD. However, the Camry handled just fine. We made it to Chena Resort and back, actually seeing a spin out happen with someone else who didnt have winter tires. Their hours sometimes make it difficult to arrange arrival. Our last trip we ran a little late on arrival, pushing us just past 5PM, but one of the staff stayed around to make sure we got our vehicle.

I can’t emphasise enough how happy and grateful I was to find Alaska Auto Rentals. I visited in December and Initially I had booked to hire a car with a well known company at the airport - Alamo - (as I’m sure many tourists do)It was only after doing some research I realised that Alamo do not put winter tires on their hire cars, this seemed crazy to me, as many tourists are not used to the conditions. Although Fairbanks does a good job keeping their roads cleared they are still very icy, and if you want to travel further afield the road conditions get worse.I read online that Alaska Auto Rentals were a local company that always put winter tires on their cars, as well as winterizing the vehicle (so it starts well in cold weather, a cable to plug in, ice scrapers etc etc, they could also guarantee a GPS, Alamo will only say ‘it’s reserved subject to availability)All in all I felt that Alaska Auto Rentals were more honest and actually cared about the safety of their clients. The service was great. They picked us up from our airport hotel on a Sunday and out of hours, the car was upgraded and in great condition, the tires were perfect. The whole process was simple, honest and no hard selling. The car itself really made our holiday…with the Alamo car we would have been stuck around the local well maintained roads, and even that would be been potentially dangerous. With the winter tires we were able to explore all over, including driving to Denali National Park and in to the local hills and obscure places on very icy roads. The car handled perfectly. I’d hire from Alaska Auto Rentals every time….Honestly, don’t try and save money and think a little hire car from the airport will be ok and that they actually care about your safety…spend a little more, hire from Alaska Auto Rentals and have a wonderful time exploring in a safe car.

I would strongly avoid this car rental agency. They lack good spirit and the fairness of doing business. They have bad policies which selfishly cover their interests, and leave the customers totally exposed to factors beyond anyones control. Alaska Auto Rental employees are not willing to listen to their customers and understand the customers problems. Their policies favor only them, and the managers bluntly apply those policies at full prejudice to the customers. Their Fairbanks manager Peter, is very cut throat, hard headed, and lacks empathy.I booked a rental 5 days before my proposed trip. They demanded that I pay full 100% rental fee upfront for a confirmed booking. And they were very persistent that I do so, otherwise which I might not find an available car. I had little choice. After the telephone booking, I never received any terms and conditions in written or electronic form. nor did I get any receipt either. (Clearly a case of lack of professionalism)Later there was an event of theft at our hostel in Fairbanks. This occurred a day before my rental as due. I lost my drivers license, cash and my credit card with which I made the booking. I had to cut short my trip to Prudhoe Bay owing to this misfortune. My cancellation request was within 3 days of my booking. Dont think that Alaska Auto Rental would have lost a lot of business in that short time.Alaska Auto rental refused to refund my money, for an event totally out of my control. The reason for not refunding, was their no refund policy on cancellation within 3 days of rental. I tried clarifying my position several times and even tried my best to convince them that I wasnt cheating and in fact was in need of any available funds. The theft was even reported to local police and I even submitted necessary proof to Alaska Auto Rental. All my pleas fell on deaf years.A manager name Peter at the Alaska Auto Rental refused to budge from their policy. There was no way I would be able to honor the agreement. Neither I had the credit card from which I made the phone booking, nor did I possess my valid drivers license to legally rent the vehicle.I tried visiting them personally a couple of times, however, Peter was never in office either. None of the other staff members had any authority or say. In the end I even dropped an email to them seeking some partial refund if not full. The email remained unanswered for almost a month. This business is totally run by unprofessional, immoral and blunt people. Their policies are bad, like some hard writing on the wall, and nothing holds in front of those policies. You dont want your holiday or work suffer at the hands of some deaf policy application and ill behavior.
