Out of perhaps six or seven experiences here including phone calls, I’ve only had one okay experience. I’ve taken three of my bunnies here and along with the doctor being rude I’ve also had to deal with the irresponsibility of the staff. When my bunny was spayed, everything had been paid for and my girl was to be picked up by my mother. My mom waited for close to an hour for them to bring her out. She followed the instructions and called when she first got there. Then again 20 minutes later to check that she hadn’t been forgotten. I was then called ten minutes after by the staff while I was at work asking if I brought a carrier as they weren’t sure which was mine. After another 10ish minutes they brought my little girl out with just freshly printed discharge papers-never providing an explanation as to why it took so long .Then today I reluctantly needed to bring in my sick lizard. I called at 10:30 am asking how busy they were and was told that they were very backed up so I should call around 3 to check. I called at 2 and was told doctor was in emergency surgery and to provide my phone number so I may be called when the surgery is done so my pet may be seen. Nothing for the next four hours so I call again. Someone answered stating there was NO RECORD of my phone number being annotated and was asked if I knew who I spoke to. I did not as names are not provided for unless you ask for them and I felt no need. The receptionist tells me that she wasn’t sure who I spoke to but doctor is gone for the day. Now I have wasted the only day I don’t work because of this staff’s incompetence. Never again will I call or come here for any reason. It was my only resort as a exotics emergency clinic, but luckily after asking the receptionist did provide me with information for two other places that just MAY see my lizard.

I was very concerned about my guinea pig. I was able to get in last minute on an emergency appointment. A previous vet diagnosed her with an ear infection. The Midwest vet found she actually had mites which is why she hadn’t gotten better. They were extremely thorough and patient answering all questions and concerns I had. They made sure my pig got the best care possible and cleaned her up to look like her old self again. They are slightly pricier than my regular vet but all services are worth the money when you know your pet is being treating and fully taken care of. Thank you. I will continue to drive 40 minutes to get my guinea pigs seen here.

I took my animal here in an emergency. The estimated cost was about $500 and the bill ended up being almost $800. Unfortunately very expensive, but in an emergency you have no other option really, especially with exotic animals on a Sunday. I was treated respectfully and they were very professional. Their prices are hard to justify. In the end most of us will choose to save our animal rather than our wallets. Still, it does not lessen the feeling of being taken advantage of.When I was able to take my pet to my primary vet the next day (they were closed the day before) it ended up being a simple diagnosis without need for taking blood or X-rays, both of which they did at Midwest. I’m sure they saved my rabbits life that day but I’m not sure that some of the procedures they did were necessary.

They were able to get us in the same day to assist us with an injured hamster we found. The vet was incredibly thorough in her exam and explanation. I never felt rushed and all of my questions were answered. They gave me a demonstration of how to handle the hamster and administer medications and treatments. They also gave me basic care instructions and information without ever coming off as condescending or judgmental, as other vets have done. Although the bill was shocking, the quality of care and compassion were worth it. We now have a very spoiled hamster who is recovering nicely.

I took my guinea pig in because she wasnt eating or drinking and bleeding from her back side. She is about 6 years old. Instead of telling me that she is dying, they did all this work on her for over $600. Even though the estimate was little over $400. They sent me home with medication and food supplements without explaining anything. For 3 days I had to force feed her and force water into her. The poor thing couldnt even stand up because of the pain medication she was on. 3 days after the vet visit she passed away. Instead of taking money from people how about you tell them their pet is dying and not charge them for all these tests that are not necessary. I feel they took advantage of me during this horrible time. My little girl could have had a peaceful death instead suffered for a few days.

My pet die under their watch. I was able to talked to them once to check on her status. The second time, I called no response. If You can’t check the status of your loving pet, then it makes you wonder what kind of service they provide. To them just another animal, for the pet owners, it’s family. I haven’t received a full summary of their care or what they try to do for her besides injections. In my heart, I know this could have been avoided if X-rays were correctly done to check for egg binding, or intestinal blockage, check for calcium deficiency, and/or even liver problems. All I know it’s they didn’t do enough. They charge you at front for a very unreliable service

I took my 10 year old bunny here because she had grown abscesses on her face due to old age. At first they told me she needed teeth pulled to remove the rotten ones to be able to fix the situation. That FIRST surgery alone cost me $168. Not even 2 weeks later another abscess grew on her face after treatment and perfect aftercare. We took her in for ANOTHER surgery that put me out $400 with X-rays so they could finally get it all. The THIRD time we took her for a recheck and they said they might not have time for her appt (she was scheduled) and that they would have to squeeze her in. 10 minutes later they said she needed emergency surgery and cost me $770 out of pocket. When we asked the doctor to give her different treatment after this time she refused and said to continue the given pain killer, flushing of the wound and antibiotics. It took us arguing with her for 15 minutes to get a stronger antibiotic because nothing was changing or healing. We took her back for the 4TH time because guess what ? Another abscess came back. They scraped it off for $120. This place won’t find you a solution or decent treatment, they’ll run you for your money and temporarily push off the situation at hand. My best friend of 10 years died this morning (4/21)because they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her and how to find a long term fix for her. The doctor always told us “I don’t know why they keep coming back” and “maybe the abscesses keep coming back because we didn’t get all the bacteria the first time around”. They caused her a lot of pain and my bunny was tired of fighting. She was scheduled for another vet tomorrow and couldn’t make it. This place is horrible. Do not bring your pets here if you want to see them live a longer happier life.

As a buisness owner and buisness administrator. I pride myself on buisness as well as customer service. This company seems to pride itself on financial gain rather than customer service. I’ve been coming to this buisness for a year and they have taken good care of my bunny. However, their customer service and policy execution has been everything but normal. From day one my card was charged before letting me know the amount. My rabbit went under sedation the first time without them letting me know the lab results which is what they said they would do. And well I guess I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, so I am here again. I drive over two hours to get here and always leave in plenty of time. I am aware of Chicago traffic and am responsible. However, regardless of the extra time I left for myself. Some circumstances are left unknown / unforeseen! I called at the time of the appointment letting them know that I was very close but would be late. They explained I would have to pay more or reschedule if I was over their policy procedure of 15 min. I explained I would only be 5 min over that. That didn’t matter. I explained this is the first time of the multiple times (every 6 weeks) I’ve had to bring my rabbit. They explained sorry it’s policy. Ok so now you can make sure policy is enforced but their phone waiting message can ask that we be understanding that things may happen.I’d advise you to reconsider coming here. Yes they are a service provider and I have been one as well for over 15 years. When you can’t find a one time extension for 5 min there is a problem and it is only a matter of time before you get caught having to rearrange your finances or life.

I was able to determine that my panther chameleon is in good health and was given some suggestions about how to best take care for him in addition to what I am already doing. I gave them all the possible information they needed through email before the visit, which made the process much easier. I felt it was possible that they mishandled him however, as he is never aggressive towards people but was with the vet. My guess is that they are used to aggression in chameleons as it is very common, and didnt bother to wait for him to get comfortable with them. But that is my only complaint, I wish I could have been in there to make the process much more smooth. But overall it went well, I was offered other services but not pressured into doing so as they weren confident he was in good health!

Sadly, we had to have Lola euthanized, but the tech there (I wish I remembered her name) was so sweet and comforting to us. I was upset that I couldn’t be in the room while they put her down but I feel that they took good care of her. Thank you guys for trying everything you could to help Lola.

I rarely leave bad reviews, but I just couldnt ignore this one. I have brought two of my three dogs here for emergencies. Each time the staff in the reception area have been so rude. I will say that the vets were much better and thats why the 2 stars.Last night our dog suddenly broke out in hives. His heart was racing, his breathing extremely fast, his ears inflamed, his hair coming out in clumps, and he was pacing throughout the house. I knew he was having an allergic reaction to something because this has happened once before. Last time when I brought him in for this they said his throat was also closing up. So I knew I needed to get him in asap. When we called, the girl said that this is not an emergency and not to bring him in and to go somewhere else. It was very obvious that we were bothering her with this call. From being in there in the past, they would much rather gossip with each other and play on their phones then be bothered to help with your pet that is in distress. They are also rude to your face while you are in there worrying about your fur baby.We went to another emergency vet further from the house who took him in immediately and gave him a shot to stop the allergic reaction. This took all of 30 minutes. Pretty easy fix and they made 200 off of our 30 minute visit, which I was more than happy to pay to see my baby out of pain.Go somewhere else

I was so impressed at everyone compassion, knowledge, and eagerness to help. They took such great care of my sweet Sally whom is a 5 year old mini Rex! The vet was so smart and went over all options for me.

They are handling the Covid crisis very efficiently and effectively... from curb-side pick-up to talking to the Dr. by phone (2x) ... to convenient payment all by phone. Well honed operation. Can’t comment on pricing for guinea pigs (which I had 2 on this day) but I had no problem with it.Highly recommend.

Our cockatoo Missy developed the sniffles and sneezies - which could become something more serious in a little bird. We called on Friday and made an appointment on Monday with an option for an emergency visit if she suddenly got worse. We arrived, the took her in, were very patient with us during the call that goes with the visit and eased our minds. When they were done with the exam, we even asked them to trim her nails. She came back to us still her happy little self and her parents were much relieved! She is now relaxing after all the excitement. Totally worth the long drive from the South Suburbs.

Theyre well managed; with the doctors and staff courteous, knowledgeable and professional. They admitted our very sick bird on emergency and administered tests and care quickly and thoroughly. If youre worried about your pets health, this is a great place to go.

I took my pet lovebird there because she was unusually sleepy and lazy, they took her away for 45 minutes and didn’t let us see her. After that, we sat in a small room with my bird in this glass case, she was pacing around and looked very scared. The doctor took 20 minutes to arrive and all they said was “she has gastrointestinal bleeding because her poop is dark”. They gave us 2 prescription drugs to give to her hourly. (this visit costed $430 when it was supposed to me $120) and sent us off. The next day she was perfectly fine without the medicines. We could’ve saved the 430 ngl 🤭

I recieved an email to rate Midwest yesterday, shortly after having to put my ferret down on the 3rd.On the 3rd my ferret developed a very high fever of 106, rapid breathing, etc. so we went to the emergency vet there around 6am. They took Charlie back, and once they came into the room we were waiting, the vet said he most likely had an infection, his fever was so high. She did explain more, but it was such a rough night I cant recall everything. We had to settle for euthanasia, I had spent my entire rainy day fund, almost 2k, in a span of about 2 months on their normal clinic. I said goodbye to my best friend, and the love of my life of 6 years that morning. The tech and vet were great. She understood ferrets, she has them herself.I dont entirely blame Midwest at all, at least not the ER. The only thing that really ever bothered me were, that I felt somewhat pushed in unnecessary directions at times while visiting the day clinic during normal hours. Nobody ever becomes a Vet to steer people in the wrong direction, I wont sit here and say the vets here dont care about animals, etc. The only thing I was really disappointed in, or I should really just say I regret, is when I first brought him in for his lethargy, and sporadic fevers, changes, that I had pushed for different options. Hindsight is 20/20 and ferrets can just be so tricky. We went through teeth cleaning for the possibility that was causing his pain, then antibiotics, pain meds, prednilsone, deslorin implant about 3 blood tests that came back normal. He had adrenal disease prior to the visits that I knew about and he had been treated over the years for before we moved. The new thing was his spleen liked to swell up and down which from what theyve told me, and what I have read can be normal and manageable. What I wish I had done from the start were xrays, ultrasounds, and the possibility of exploratory surgery for lymphoma. Was it something as simple as IBD and I needed to change his diet, or was it cancer, I have no idea. The guilt I feel over not doing these things or having some of them suggested, is a lot. I know they tried their best, but I never got a definite answer of what was wrong. I will never know the underlying cause of his death. Its not their fault, but I wish we had just been more aggressive in the approach, and I wouldve asked more questions, I just wish I had known what was wrong with him. With that, I do recommend this hospital, but I also recommend that owners do research, and really talk to your vets. Dont be shy, or feel like your suggestions are dumb.

My dove broke her leg and I was so scared. Midwest Bird and Exotic was able to see us the very next morning. The veterinarians and staff were so reassuring and helpful. She was treated by Dr. Alia Habhab, who was wonderful. She took time to answer all my questions and I really appreciate how she cared to keep the bird comfortable and out of pain while she healed. My birds leg has healed now and I am grateful to have found Midwest Exotic.

I took a couple of our school chickens to Midwest. It was early in the morning so I used the ER services. They were expedient, very knowledgable and compassionate. The vet, Dr. Wilson, explained everything to me in great detail with genuine concern. Sadly, one needed to be euthanized due to her failing health. A few days later, I received a sympathy card...too sweet and thoughtful. I told them I want them to be our go-to for future chicken issues.

It has been several months since I had services with Midwest but I must say they were some of the best services I have ever received for my dogs. I went in with my dog Tiger back in February as he was experiencing an emergency. Although Tiger did not make it even after the best efforts by Dr. Eller and the staff, I couldnt be more grateful for the care and kindness shown by Dr. Eller and the rest of the staff during that weekend. Thank you!

The techs and doctors take care of my ferret like he is part of their family. When I brought Baer in September for his first visit, he was very sick with cardiac disease. We didnt think he would last a week. The doctors are compassionate and straightforward with me, give me options for treatment. Now Baer doesnt have fluid in his lungs and he is on maintenance meds. He has quality of life back, and is happy.

I am very, very happy with my experiences so far at Midwest Exotic! In short, they do a great job, the hours and availability are awesome, they can do everything in-house, Dr. Clarkson is fantastic (and the prices are cheaper, the care is better, and the people are way nicer than at the other reptile vet, Chicago Exotics)! See below for a pros and cons list. I have only been during COVID, so Ive only spoken to everyone by phone, but Im sure theyre just as wonderful in person. I cant comment on the experience inside the office yet!Important note: I have had one bad experience here, which was with Dr. Boyd, but I highly, highly recommend the practice because of how they handled it. While she was very nice to us personally, she didnt prescribe the right treatment initially for our bearded dragons parasites, and she took over a week to get back to me about results from a follow-up fecal despite me calling and emailing multiple times, causing a nearly two-week delay in getting our little guy the treatment he actually needed. Had it been something more urgent, he couldve been seriously harmed, so I wouldnt recommend her specifically for beardies. However, the Midwest team was very apologetic and understanding when I shared that I was disappointed in the quality of care, and they went out of their way to resolve the issue and get us set up with a different vet, Dr. Clarkson, who has been absolutely amazing since.Pros:- Dr. Clarkson is an awesome reptile vet- Super friendly and helpful front desk staff- Accommodating team that always works to resolve any issues- Much nicer people than at Chicago Exotics- Cheaper prices and better service than Chicago Exotics- All tests can be done in house with same-day results- Extremely responsive by phone and emailCons:- a little far away if youre in downtown Chicago- usually booked several weeks in advance for regular exams- Located next to an absolutely delicious burger place, which has caused me to eat at least one cheeseburger and a massive amount of fries per vet visit :P (this last one is a joke, for those who will take this seriously!!)
