Johnston Masonry is outstanding! Over the last two years Johnston Masonry has completed two major projects for us. The first project included waterproofing our basement, putting in a cement driveway, and putting in a stamped cement patio, sidewalk, and porch. The crew was friendly, professional, hard-working, and extremely competent. The final result was excellent! Our second project included siding out house and garage as well as putting in soffits and gutters and doing some chimney repair. We were impressed with the quality of the siding and the many choices that were available. Again, both the work done and the finished product were excellent! At our first planning meetings with Dean we were given options and pricing and were able to choose exactly what we wanted to be accomplished. Having a project manager for each project was also a plus. Communication was excellent and we appreciated the regular updates we were given. We always felt that our opinion was valued. We were impressed with every aspect of our projects, from the planning stages to the end results, and we highly recommend Johnston Masonry!

I had my front steps and porch rebuilt and a flying gable reroofed after another company botched the job < 5 years ago. I had taken the lowest bid, which was clearly a mistake. I couldnt be happier with the job Johnston Masonry did. I am so happy that I am going to engage them in another project (i.e., rebuild my garage and put in a flagstone patio). Although they might be bit pricey, in the end you get more than you pay for. They do fabulous, high quality, lasting work. They are expert, professional, detail-orienteed, timely, communicative, and always available for questions. You always know what to expect. I couldnt be happier with their work.

Johnston Masonry built a tiered retaining wall for me this fall (2019) exceeding my expectations. The crew that worked on my wall were all eager to please and asked me questions related to how I wanted things done during the construction phase. The weather was not very accommodating so it did take a little longer than originally planned but was completed in a relatively short time.Numerous neighbors have stopped by and commented on the retaining walls and how nice they look and how they improved my curb appeal.Overall they did an excellent job and I strongly recommend their services.

Johnston Masonry worked on my yard for almost 3 weeks. They removed a crumbling concrete retaining wall, regraded the slope, replaced the stairway, and did some stucco repair. They were fantastic to work with every step of the way! I really appreciated the attention their attention to detail, their very competent workers, and the excellent clean-up at the end of the project.

Johnston Masonry is top quality! All appointments from estimates to arrival of the work crews were sharply on time. And very importantly, they finished the job without any delays Or interruptions except if weather might have been a problem. The crew was polite and quiet as they went about their work. I was glad that there wasn’t some blaring radio to keep them in music. To me that would have been a rude aspect like you might find with other contractors. They were very careful when working indoors to protect nearby items, and they cleaned up perfectly.Our main concern over the years has been basement leakage through or around window wells. Johnston replaced two old 1950s windows with glass blocks. They thoroughly caulked and added flashing. I’m perfectly confident that our flood or seepage problem has been completely solved.Johnston also repaired some work left over from a job Several years ago by another contractor That we couldn’t afford at the time. The crew faced an exposed section of basement wall with foam panels. They added a layer of modern stucco material that is absolutely flawless in appearance and which will flex with our harsh climate.You can always find “reasonable” contractors to do anything, but I have to say you cannot find a better or more conscientious masonry contractor and crews. It’s so nice to know such high quality standards still exist.We’re having them back next Spring for one other task. They’ve earned our loyalty.

I hired Johnston Masonry for two projects. The first was to apply natural stone veneer on the exterior basement walls of my walkout basement. And the second was the installation of a stone stairway.Both projects were done in a timely fashion and on budget. The crew knew their craft, were friendly, and cleaned up afterward. Im very satisfied with their work and would hire them again.All stone was sourced from Great Lakes Stone Supply.The veneer on the basement is Full Blend Cobblestone thin veneer. A ledge was placed on top of this stone to accommodate a unique feature of the home. The stone on this ledge is Black Mist Mosaic.The steps are New York Bluestone and the small landing is New York Bluestone flagstone.The steppers leading to the stairs are New York Bluestone flagstone also and were installed by the homeowner.

I am updating my review due to a personal phone call from Ken Johnston. He apologized for the cancellation of my estimate appointment and for the impact of their policy about having all decision makers present. We had a really good conversation in which he listened to my experience and feedback and asked for suggestions to ensure that this doesnt happen to other families. I reiterated that while I fully support having a policy that ensures all decision makers are included, in my case, it appeared that they were unable to work with me because my husband couldnt be present during the estimate and that I would be solely responsible for decision making. I really believe that the intent was not to be harmful, but he took responsibility for the impact and indicated actions he would take to make change. I am incredibly appreciative of this response. It shows professionalism and attention to customer service. I retract my previous poor rating.I recently called Johnston Masonry for an estimate to have brick front steps and sidewalk put in. They refused to do an estimate with me without my partner present, despite the fact that my partner lives in another city, I am the primary decision maker on our home, and I own the home myself. They wanted to FaceTime my husband into the bid, instead. Their reasoning is that they want both decision makers present so they dont have to do a second bid (Im assuming when one person disagrees with the other?). Instead of trusting me that I am actually capable of making a decision by myself, I had to have several text conversations and a phone call all to convince them that I am, indeed, able to make decisions about my own home, despite being a married woman. Once they learned I was soliciting multiple bids so that I could compare quality, customer service, and time frame, they indicated that if I was making a decision based on cost, then they might be too expensive for me. I can, in fact, afford home projects, but I include things like customer service and time frame in my choices about companies I work with. I believe a company can have policies like preferring to have both decision makers present for a bid. However, the minute I indicate that I am the primary decision maker and do not need to have my husband present to make my own decisions on my own house, they should have trusted me and moved forward. Instead, I had to present my case to multiple people, be questioned about my finances, and treated as though I am not capable to make decisions on my own. While they never said this is because I am a woman and would probably deny sexism, the implications and impact are clear. I felt mistreated because I happen to be a woman who owns my own home and can afford expensive home projects and my husband trusts me to make decisions on my own. The time spent discussing this could have been used to give me a bid for the project. I will not be working with Johnston Masonry because of their customer service treatment of me, not because I cannot afford their work. I understand that Johnston Masonry is a sought after business and they may be able to afford to lose a customer, but they have also lost the business of the multiple people I will be telling about this experience.

I am on the Building & Finance Committee at Pilgrim Congregational Church in Duluth and we hired Johnston Masonry for major repair project. Working with Dean and Travis was a real pleasure and they were very fair, honest and timely throughout the whole project. We had a major structural issue that could have resulted in a collapsed ceiling in the front portion of the sanctuary. With the help of Mark Udd from Northland Engineering we came up with a solution to install two LDL beams that replaced a faulty brick arch above the sanctuary.These guys know their business and were very fair on the overall project costs. We are delighted with their work and will gladly recommend them to anyone. We would not hesitate to work with Johnston Masonry on any future projects.

Late this fall we needed two chimneys repaired and were trying to find a masonry company that would work in winter weather. After getting 4 estimates, we decided to contract with Johnston to do the work.We received a very thorough estimate, that was revised when several complications were discovered. During this whole process we were kept well informed by the pleasant Johnston staff. One thing that particularly impressed us was their going the extra mile to get our reline done before Christmas, so we could have a fire when our family was celebrating.We are very pleased with our finished chimneys, and were impressed that Dean went on the roof to take pictures to show us the work close up. Johnston Masonry has it all!I met with Ken originally and he was very perceptive and took a genuine interest in my project as evidenced by his pertinent questions which helped me define what I really wanted. He offered me three different options and prices that corresponded with each option. I was able to chose the option that best reflected my budget.Before the construction began, which, by the way, started on the exact day they projected (That was the second miracle!), I was given regular updates and, also, was emailed a list of all the persons who would be working on my project, so I knew exactly who to call if I had any pre-construction questions.The Project Coordinator/Field Manager, Patrick, arrived with his smiling crew, discussed the project with me, introduced his crew, and commenced work immediately. They were all excellent craftsmen. Had to completely re-slab entire garage, fill in proper fill, frost proof garage, install pavers for walkway, and build additional parking pad. All staff were not only extremely friendly and professional, but also highly competent! Will use again in the future, if further needs arise, and we highly recommend their work. We like to use locally established companies v. big corporations, which is what brought them to our attention in the first place. Excellent job!!

This crew did a fabulous job of repairing some cement steps etc at our home. They also did a wonderful job of putting brick work around the light post in our front yard ! ! ! Quick response from Dean when contacted for a quote. Was very patient in redoing the quote due to the owner of the company changing the specs of the job. Crew set up quickly and safely all the scaffolding needed to access the chimney on a second story roof. The crew took great care in protecting the lower flat roof from being damaged while the chimney was repaired. The crew worked in some cold and windy weather but got the job done in a timely manner and before the fiscal year end. The crew did a great job in cleaning up the job site. The new cap and block replacement in the chimney looked very good. I would recommend Johnston Masonry to anyone looking for a professional job from quote to clean up.

Johnston Masonry replaced the buckling foundation along one side of my house, as well as some stucco repair and replacement and tuck pointing the brick. They did an amazing job, the crew was super professional and very friendly and hard working. They did wind up over budget, but we had been warned from the start that the area that caused the problem could easily cost more, depending on what they found when they knocked the old stucco off, and they managed to come in below the revised estimate. I wouldnt hesitate to hire them again (and in fact already have!) and will recommend them to anyone who is looking for masonry work.

I hired Johnston Masonry to tear down and rebuild my driveway retaining walls reusing existing landscaping blocks. Demolishing the concrete parking pad and pouring a new one, and putting new stucco on the sides of our front steps was also part of the job. Im very pleased with the quality of work. Minor problems like loose capstones or reusing blocks that had, in my opinion, too much damage to be reused were quickly addressed by Johnston Masonry to my satisfaction. The field manager did a good job of keeping me informed of project status, and also pointed out improvements that could be made during the course of the project that I had not thought of. I have a 100 plus year old Duluth home with deteriorating front steps. Under Johnston Masonry, the front steps were demolished and replaced in late summer 2018. The finished steps blend with the house. I highly recommend Johnston Masonry. They were courteous and timely in the completion of the project. The supervision by Tyrel Redinger was superb. This was a complicated geometry project and it was completed with profound expertise.

This is first time I hired Johnston Masonry for the project. It involved lifting the 2 story house to install ICF basement with in-floor heating. Given the 3.5 hrs distance, JM and I only communicated via emails and phone calls. Needless to say, I was very nervous and not knowing what to expect because of the situation. After I have a calls with Joel the GM and saw the progress based on pictures and occasional review of the jobsite in person, I was glad i went with JM. They have my complete trust given the quality of work. They know their crafts. They do what they say and say what they do.Being in northern MN, JM group had to work thru some brutal weather of December and January. Really appreciate their sensitivity of timing and continue to make progress despite the uncontrolled situation. Couple minor things JM has to do in spring when the ground thaws out; complete the backfill and drain tile. They have set a pretty high standard for themselves. I will definitely work with JM again.
