We chose Palmetto because it is the oldest carriage tour company. This company is great! From the beginning you can see how well the animals are taken care. The staff were extremely helpful and pleasant. Our guides, Scott, Yogi and Boo-Boo, did an amazing job! The tour didn’t feel scripted. When Scott shared his knowledge of Charleston, you could feel his love for the city. We would come back again!

If looking to take a carriage ride and receive history and humor on your tour, try to reserve a ride with John. If all our schools’ history teachers could master John’s type of storytelling, our younger generation would be so much more knowledgeable and interested in history. In addition to the tour of historical Charleston, you get so much more. John exhibits the essence of our southern “ways.” He has a knack to connect with people and makes you feel welcome. His unique style of history-telling and humor make this the most enjoyable historical tour you’ll take. The tour may have even extended beyond the usual time for the route, but we wished the tour could have continued on for hours more. Ask Richard to hook you up with John for the best tour in Charleston!

We recommend using this company if you want a horse carriage tour in Charleston. They take care of their horses. After each tour they check the horses temperature and take it to a covered area for water and misting. There are some carriage companies in Charleston that sit on the street waiting for you - avoid those! It’s hot and we saw them there all day and never saw water for them. Go to the “red barn” and find Palmetto Carriage. They are good to their horses.

Our tour was great! We were able to book ours as part of a trio deal through the Harbor Tour deals. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made the history interesting and fun! Our tour, as this was our third in the Holy City, took us on a different area than ever before. We were well-pleased with our experience for sure! The Palmetto Carriage Works offers a comfortable barn to wait in with restrooms and sends out multiple carriages so you dont have to wait long or feel crowded on your tour time.

Man what can I say about this tour...it was phenomenal! Scott was an extensively knowledgeable and engaging tour guide and his boy Elwood made the ride more comfortable than I thought a carriage ride to be. What a great way to experience Charleston. Scott was our tour guide and he was outstanding and very passionate about his home in the peninsula. Our horses were Uber and Lyft and they were fine old Amish work horses. I like the way the horses are treated here. They all look healthy and well taken care of. This is worth every dollar to take one of these rides as it gives you a overview of the city.

I have always wanted to do a carriage ride! So, while visiting Charleston we decided to check out Palmetto Carriage. We had a reservation for 10 but arrived early and they were able to squeeze us on the 9:30 tour. Weston was our guide and OMalley was the beautiful horse pulling our carriage. Weston explained how they take care of the horses and mules, he was also very knowledgeable about Charleston. Definitely worth doing!

It was a fun ride for us. The guide was knowledgeable and funny. He made the facts interesting and had much knowledge about horses. But be aware, if u have a toddler that u didn’t buy tickets for (because it is free) will need to be on the lap and they WILL make four people sit in one row, irrespective of their size and COVID restrictions.

What a wonderful carriage company. We arrived 20 minutes before our reservation time and got to spend some time in the barn while the carriages were readied for the first tours of the day. The barn hands took such good care of the horses, checking them over, taking their temperatures, watering and grooming them. Our team was Martha and Butter and our guide Jim gave us a perfect tour of the Battery area. We really felt like we got a behind the scenes view of Charleston, its citizens and history. I am so glad we did this first thing in the morning (Sunday, 9am on Sep 26); it was so quiet and very few cars to contend with on our route. There was just three of us, but i bought an extra seat to have the whole row; that was worth the extra money as it was very comfortable. I really like the (slower) pace and open-air features of the carriage ride. Very professional.

We had a great time on the tour today. Everyone was so kind and helpful especially the woman who answered the phone (I wish I could remember her name)! It was my grandmas 80th birthday and they let us sit in the front seat and helped her in and out of the carriage. Ross was also incredible as a tour guide. He was highly knowledgeable and professional as well as hilarious. I originally didn’t want to take her on a carriage ride because I felt bad for the horses, but it had always been a childhood dream of hers and out of all the tours I saw in Charleston they seemed to take the best care of them. I liked hearing about how they were rescued and then retire on their farm. We will definitely return on our next trip!

This was a last minute decision and although it seemed expensive for only an hour long tour ($90.00 for two adults) it was worth it! Sean/Shawn was our guide. Explained things well, so much rich history in Charleston! The lottery system for which tour you get - that leaves alot to be desired. While the bingo board is unique, the entire system desperately needs to be overhauled. We payed alot of money for a random tour, and it was certainly not one we wouldve chosen (this is not up to the carriage companies , this is the way the city has it regulated, to control carriage traffic throughout the city streets). Youre a bustling tourist town, Charleston, please update this insufficient system.Carriage was fine. Horses and mules are treated with extreme care.

Wast of time & money ! 75% of the Tour was on back alleys behind the buildings, businesses, & homes. We saw section 8 project housing & parking garages. 4 churches - the college & several houses. Did not get to see the rainbow houses nor hear the history on many of the attractive homes in Historical Charleston. Never saw the parks or the waterfront. The guide was nice, polite, & professional. It wasn’t his fault, he was given a disinteresting route. The horse & carriage tourism has gone up in price & down in quality, since we were there in January. We may have used a different company back in January & just wasn’t aware. They also crowded 4 adults to a seat. It was awkward & uncomfortable. The tour was a disappointment & a waste of time & money. We missed so much of the Beautiful charm of downtown Charleston . I do not recommend this company.

Renewed my faith in humanity! I was visiting my niece in Augusta from the west coast and we decided to visit Charleston for the weekend. We got there on Saturday, Sept 4 and was able to book a carriage tour that same afternoon. We paid to park in the parking lot across the street. The parking attendant was very friendly and helpful. Our tour was amazing, everyone, from the people in the gift shop, to the helpers with the horses, couldnt have been nicer. When we got back to our car, we paused to enjoy the evening and talk about the tour. When we got back to our hotel in North Charleston, about a half an hour away, I realized I had set my handbag next to the car and drove away. Everything was in that bag, my medication, my ID, credit cards and an envelope of cash. My niece was franticly try to find a local number for the Carriage company, as we had booked through a tour group, when my phone went off. It was the nice parking attendant who had spoken with us earlier, to tell me he had my handbag. A good Samaritan, (thank you!!!) had found my handbag and turned it in to him. From my ID, he remembered me and knew I had booked a tour that day. The Carriage company went through the tour company records for that day and got my phone number. I literally almost fainted. I thank him profusely and told him I was a half hour away and would be there as soon as possible. He said they would be closed by then, but his tack manager would be working in the barn and would have my handbag. Sure enough, two young people were working and had my handbag (completely intact) So many good people had to do so many good things to do this one kindness. I want to thank the person or persons who found my handbag and Palmetto Carriage Works for going above and beyond. I cant wait to go back, thank everyone personally and go on another tour.

Got to experience 2 tours in September. Once with my friends as part of my 50th birthday trip to Charleston and again with my husband a couple weeks later. These tours are a great way to start your trip to get a feel for the area. It really helped us to know what we wanted to see and do in more depth during the rest of our trip. Unfortunately, I don’t remember the name of our guide from my first trip but he was super knowledgeable about Charleston history. He was driving Toogadoo who was just so cute! I was very skeptical about horse drawn carriage rides, not sure of the treatment of the animals. Palmetto Carriage Works put my mind at ease. Honestly the city of Charleston does an amazing job of protecting the horses at all of these carriage companies. I had a fabulous time learning about Charleston. My second trip was just as much fun. Our guide on that tour was Scott and his love for the horse Elwood who he was driving was so sweet. You could see the bond the two shared. Scott was just as wonderful as our first guide and this time we got to go to a different zone of the city so it was a totally different experience. I noticed some people weren’t happy about being crammed in a seat together but I liked the option to buy the additional seats for a reduced price if you desired more space.

We had an amazing time!!! We will be back definitely!!! And if you are wondering if you should book your ticket, please do. You will not regret it. Trust me!

I was very impressed with the organization, and the overall care of the horses. Our driver was a walking history book, she even kept my step daughter interested in the tour. It was a great way to see the city, and my whole family had a great time. I highly recommend this company, I also own Chattanooga Carriage Company in Chattanooga Tennessee. Thank you to everyone who showed us around and gave me advice about the Carriage business. You guys do an amazing job!!! We hope to see you again next year!

We purchased the one hour carriage ride in Charleston, SC. We had two guides, Josh and Jennie because Teddy (young horse) was in training. Jennie was absolutely fabulous and very funny. She really made the tour great even in the Charleston heat. They were extremely professional and accommodating. And....they take great care of their horses. BTW, they have mules too. I highly recommend this tour and company.

Im going to start with the negative that brings this review to a 2. Our guide felt entitled to emphatically share with us his political interpretation of what is and is not constitutional. Whether I agree or disagree with him is immaterial. I didnt take this tour for a political lecture or other personal opinions he shared with us. The city determines which tours follow which routes; our route was less than spectacular. Now the positives: the barn was spotless; the horses seemed to be well cared for; the carriage was comfortable; customer service was very accommodating and friendly. Too bad Justin ruined it for us.

Had a great experience from start to end. Everyone was super friendly and helpful! The tour is an hour long and can take you on 1 of 5 different routes. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable of the city and made great recommendations for places to visit and eat. Our daughter who is 3 loved petting the horses. I would definitely recommend them to anyone. We will use them again in the future four our Ghost tour in the fall.
