This college has a beautiful campus. With all the different trees and plant life and types of building styles. The dorm rooms are all singles which leaves you with a lot of space for your stuff. The food offered in the dining halls are of wide variety and quite good. If you have a problem in your room, maintenance strives to solve it as quickly as possible. There are a wide variety of services available to the students in whatever area they need help in.

Major state university ... beautiful campus ... fall and spring semester temperate climate ... Amtrak-served community ... and about 5 hours from Chicago and 2 hours from St. Louis. Given the current economic downturn, dilapidated places get bulldozed and new places are being built -- campus and the surrounding small town are looking better than ever.

Reflecting back on things, there were a lot of resources offered that I should have taken advantage of, and now, there are even more resources available to students. Its a great location. Weather is much better than Chicago and there are great state parks nearby.

Many of the classes here require that you pay for a program in order to gain access to the homework. These required assignments make up a good portion of the grade. The costs of books here are outrageous. Scenery is beautiful. But that does not make up for the outrageous price of books and required materials. They want you to pay for a program in order to succeed in your classes.

This is a failing university, and with good reason.Administration and housing are next to useless. There are a few good people in this institution, and I wish them well. But the majority of the University cares about nothing more than money. The students here are generally good people, there are a few teachers here who feed their classes lies. When those teachers are confronted they blame it on the students losing sight of whats important. If you refuse to take a field trip during finals week, your teacher will shame you in front of the class, causing tension for the remainder of the time you interact with students in that program. Books are outrageously priced. The teachers tell us they are REQUIRED for classes, but we often never even open them. University housing dishes out charges for damaged dorm rooms when nothing was damaged. Parking division issues parking tickets on weekends (when students can park ANYWHERE on campus, except restricted areas) because they know most students wont contest the tickets. Easy money for them. Maintenance is obnoxious and are constantly being told different things by their higher ups. No one can get a clear answer. The dining have extremely limited options. Both dining halls serve soggy and bland food. The vegan/vegetarian options are generally disgusting and there are is ONE vegan option to choose from at any point in time. The staff allow the food to sit out under the heating lamps too long, so the food becomes dry and stiff. Many times the food is grossly overcooked. Nothing can be taken out of the dining halls, even though we pay an outrageous amount of money for our meal plans. Dining hall closes way too early and opens way too late 2 days a week. All in all, I would NOT recommend enrolling here.

Beautiful campus, incompetent staff, such as Lorie from FAO. There was an error in my records, where I was due a $2,000 refund but received a bill for $2,000 instead. When I went in to explain the issue, Lorie told me that it was my mistake (it wasn’t) and that if I can’t afford to pay it, don’t return to school there then shooed me out of her cubicle. SIUC used to be a great school, but staff such as that is the cause for their record-low enrollment every year.

SIU, and the opportunities and people at the university, defined who I am as a professional, further, a person. I cannot express my deep gratitude to " the university of opportunity" for the endless manners my life has been enhanced. It's a major research institution and the opportunity to excel academically is prevalent. It's also a great place to rock your socks off (although there's much, much more to do!!!). It's the best of all worlds. Not that I'm biased or anything...

This school was great with diversity but recent changes specifically with housing there is no racial diversity at all, starting with next school year 2019 the staff and supports staff RA/APA have gone all white, seems intentionally done to keep diversity out of housing, better education and growth if young kids starts with diversity. These are small at first but could spread as plague if left unchecked.

The school and education arent bad but theyre not great either. socially it was a great school back in the 90s. And I never really had any issues with the SIU to speak of. However I am back for the 2015-16 school year to finish a second degree and have had some pretty unreal problems. Namely with the financial aid. They have miss directed me a half dozen times this semester alone. And its simple things like; What is my aid is going to be and what am I eligible for. The most fitting word for the workers in this department is Incompetent. They are simply to lazy to do due diligence. To push one more button and give us, the customer, the correct answer. This of course caused me a lot of problems and hurt my grades. Which to me is unacceptable. If you are looking at SIUC then just make sure the financial aid department gives you the full picture by asking them a lot of questions. Especially if you are a no-traditional student.

Hard to judge, but my impression after a year was not good. Media department stressed theory-first ciriculum, yet charged out-of-pocket costs in required classes for old useless equipment. Had many friends leave after their first year, and thats not even counting housing. Sleep was impossible thanks to the LLC buildings, you just get stuck there because the towers arent much better. Had a few good teachers, but the bad ones were rotten to the core. Had to walk out of two classes because the syllabus was a joke. Anyone saying its better than Chicago is just sick of chicago, this town in a dump compared to the rest of illinois.

They have a Health Management program, a Workforce Training, and Electronic Systems Technology Management courses taught by commuting professors from Carbondale. They do an excellent job with their accelerated learning programs, but youll also find Columbia College and Lake Forest Community College also utilizing this building. This building also houses the base library and Navy College offices, and services the community with a childrens science program.

I would encourage you to not live on campus unless you have to because the water lines are always breaking. Happened twice within one week. This university has a lot credits that also dont get transfered over so sometimes taking ap classes in high school doesnt mean necessarily anything. IDS are in terrible condition when you recieve them already. Money hungry in some aspects, however, the school has some good programs such as dawgs nite out and etc.

After visiting about 7 schools, I decided to go with SIU. It was one of the best decisions Ive ever made. The campus and the entire Southern Illinois area has some of the most beautiful areas Ive seen - especially in the fall. National parks, lakes, one of the largest rec centers in the country. Yes, Carbondale is a little dirty but the campus and surrounding SO ILL area is filled with things to do and see (Google Giant City, Little Grand Canyon, Garden of the Gods). For academics, I majored in marketing. I wish the curriculum was a little more ahead of the game (I do search engine optimization but at SIU I learned very little about Google Analytics, SEO, WordPress, HTML, website design or online marketing while attending classes - maybe they had different classes, Im not sure). My experience was learning more traditional marketing (nothing hands-on about online marketing). The professors are AWESOME but I do hope they update the courses to where the industry is going - the internet. My #1 suggestion would be to get involved in the small business development center. They have tons of workshops, knowledgeable people, and opportunities for real life applications. Joining Saluki CEO or another student organization is a MUST for networking and getting involved in something where you will actually get a job after college.Though most people may not have this experience (and hopefully you dont), Dr. Perkins from the Student Health Center literally saved my life. I was really sick and when they did blood tests to learn how sick I was (staff infection), the doctor drove me in his own personal car to Carbondale Memorial Hospital and demanded I get immediate surgery. Im alive now because of it. Thank you Dr. Perkins. The whole experience was a ride and at the end of the day, Im really glad I went to SIU. Its a solid choice - just go to your classes, take advantage of the awesome library they have, and get involved with student organizations - youll be golden. Hope that helps somebody make a decision.
