Our puggle, Milo, had gotten into some dark chocolate and was having some severe GI distress. We called our primary vet and advised us to seek emergency care. We came to this place right away. Due to covid we werent able to go in, but the staff I talked to on the phone, met outside in the parking lot and the vet my wife and I spoke to were friendly, and professional. They helped Milo out and really walked us through what was going on, what our options were and what we could expect to pay. We really appreciated them spending the extra time explaining everything to us and we had a very good outcome for Milo as well. I would recommend this place to others based on this experience.

Vec was the only emergency vet open and willing to help us when all the other emergency vets wouldnt. We had to put down our cat of 15 years due to her expelling a tumor earlier in the night. The staff and dr were absolutely amazing, helpful, compassionate, understanding and made the process of sending our cat to the rainbow bridge less traumatic.

Could not recommend this place more. I have unfortunately had to use their emergency services with two of my dogs and they always are so extremely kind and compassionate. From the front desk to the techs to the veterinarians, I’ve always had a great experience there. I have moved to Massachusetts and they are still my #1 choice for emergency care.

Wonderful place would go back without reservations. This is my second emergency visit with Vet Emergency center. Everyone was so nice to me and to Sadie girl she is my 10 month old retriever. Sadie was so sick all night I decided to bring her in and as usual VET was there for me. They answered all my questions took all my many calls. I would like to send a special thank you to Dr Elan Armstrong this is our second time she helped us out. She is always professional and just a kind person. They treated Sadie like she was their dog.I will go back ( hopefully I will not need to) without reservation.Dr McNicholas

So far from what I’ve experienced, the staff are in control of this practice & the fact that they will not forward a telephone message to the owner-vet is disrespectful to him as well as clients who readily lay out big cash for his services. The staff seem to feel more important & educated more than the doctors. I beg to differ, Cory is dismissive & rude on the phone. The owner needs to know this and via mail to his home, I will make sure he does know what is going on in his business. The staff may lie, I won’t!

Our puppy was at the hospital for 3 nights and ultimately had exploratory surgery of his stomach. While we thought that he had been recovering nicely, our regular vet discovered on examination 11 days later that he had an open area of tissue next to the surgical site below the skins surface which required immediate attention. Since this appeared to be in connection with the first surgery, he referred us back to the Veterinary Emergency Center for follow up. The Veterinary Emergency Center was unwilling to consider this a complication from the first surgery and would only operate again if we agreed to full payment again. Based on the urgent need for surgery, we could not wait and agreed to the surgery and payment again. I am a medical professional and based on my above-basic level of understanding, the most likely need for the second surgery was due to poor placement of stitches during the first surgery and not a genetic defect that we were told it was. The clinic assured me that this was the only possible reason for developing the hernia and that their doctors keep careful notes about each patient since their is a constant rotation of doctors at the hospital. I am not convinced. To add to the stress of this difficult situation, following the second surgery, we observed an usual bump next to the incision site and were concerned. When I called the Veterinary Emergency Center to ask if they could check it, I was told that they would only check the bump if I agreed to pay the $160+ office visit charge. I was so upset based on everything that had happened to date and the significant financial investment we had already made that I took him to our regular veterinarian instead to have it looked at. Our vet did not even charge us for an office visit. The Veterinary Emergency Center has placed protocol of payment over common sense customer care and professional accountability. We are very disappointed.

BE AWARE BEFORE TAKING YOUR PET HERE FOR CARE!!!!My puppy Yoda was brought here for care, he was there from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon. In this time staff quoted me prices that only continued to increase with no results or a clearly defined diagnosis. I was informed several times my puppy would die if I could not pay for the care however I was offered the option of allowing one of the staff members to adopt him! Are you insane!! My puppy was denied pain medication on Saturday but given pain medication right before I picked him up. I attempted to have my puppy transferred to another vet at which time they told the vet my puppy would die on the ride there! Dr. Carter informed me that she was unaware of this but her colleague spoke to the doctors. They refused to send medical records over to the hospital instead they held a phone conversation only! This practice is SHADY!!! They threatened to call the humane society on me for wanting to pick Yoda up to take him elsewhere for care. The oath they swore to protect, Care for and serve animals went out the window with the vision of dollar signs. This practice is purely money driven and it’s disgusting how they use your love of your pet for financial gain. I will be reporting this hospital to the state for investigation, and BBB! I have plenty of proof of their negligence to care for Yoda. I feel for the owner of this practice because the staff is ruining a business of care for the love of money! Close to 3k in expenses with no diagnosis! Yoda was sent home with no medication and they “cared” so much about him they brought him out in the rain getting wet uncovered and no umbrella. THANKS FOR ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! I HOPE THEY SHUT THIS PLACE DOWN.

I have never been to a Veterinary Emergency Center until last night. I was dealing with my older cat not eating and limited mobility. It was time for me to say goodbye to my Skittles. It was a very difficult decision for me. I called around 7:30 last night. The compassion I received on the phone, and from Dr. Armstrong was so appreciated. If you are ever in need of an emergency service, you can trust the Veterinary Emergency Center 135 Dowd Ave. Your loving pet will be in good hands. The entire staff is warm and kind. I likely had an overreaction to my kittens surgery wound being swollen, but they were really wonderful. I called and they were friendly and helpful- and I made the decision to drive 35 minutes to them just to be safe. They were pretty quick coming to get him at my car and set the expectation that I had someone more critical in front of me. They were really communicative, super friendly and sent him home feeling better. The wait wasnt horrible, but again they told me it wasnt going to be quick, so I cant complain! It was also a pretty reasonable price compared to other emergency vets Ive been to in the past. All is well wth my little guy, and I dont regret taking him. Awesome vet, definitely keeping them on my list if ever needed again.

Brought our cat in on a Saturday night when we realized her ear was really infected and torn open from scratching. I’m always an anxious wreck when something happens to my animals and they made me feel calmer. They saw her quickly even though they told me it’d be a long wait, I felt our wait was very reasonable and they worked quickly with her. They were able to give her antibiotics through injection so I wouldn’t have to fight with her at home. We’ve been following their advice and I can’t believe how quickly she’s healing up. It’s also great to know there’s an emergency vet in the area with reasonable prices so I never have to feel like I have to decide whether or not I can afford to get my pet emergency care.

Disappointed. Over vacation our puppy came down with some mini wheezing-coughing episodes. We brought her in and were told that she might have allergies. The vet kept talking about his allergies on the phone with us.. we didnt want to seem like we were overacting, so we took his word. A few days later, we brought her to our regular vet (a clinic/emergency center as well) in NYC who performed a much more thorough standard exam and pointed out to us right away our puppy had an inflamed trachea. Pretty easy to diagnose- they pressed on her trachea to induce coughing. While the 24 hours is convenient, the standard of care does not match the price.

Total wait time in car close to 3 1/2 hours from arrival to the time we left. We did call ahead and called when we got there to check in in as instructed. When we called to say we arrived receptionist seemed awfully confused as to why we were calling. We waited approximately an hour before someone came to the car and asked if we were being helped. The confused receptionist apparently forgot to check us in. In the time we were there they did absolutely NOTHING to relieve my dogs discomfort. When they wanted to do X-rays I trusted them to do so with the understanding that they would send a copy of the images to my email so we could review them with the attending physician. This didn’t happen. In fact they failed to review the X-ray with us at all. They didn’t even go over the bloodwork with us. We had to ask multiple times for the results. They also promised to provide my vet with all results. Imagine my surprise when I called my vet and they told me they hadn’t received anything. Staff had no compassion at all and at times we found them to be rude. Needless to say we will not be returning. Waste of time and money. Apparently when the clinic read this review rather than calling and asking what they could have done to make things better they asked us not to return.

Never thought Id be leaving a review for a place that I took my cat, Porsche, to for euthanasia, but here I am. Definitely not a pleasant experience, but Dr. Gerber and her staff made it as pleasant as possible. She put us all at ease, she made sure to talk us through the entire process, grieved with us, and most importantly she made sure we knew that we were making the best decision for our cat to make sure she was not suffering. We were torn as we have never had to put an animal down before so we needed that confirmation that what we were doing was the only option. She took the time to review our cat’s information sent over from another vet prior to the procedure. She made sure our kitty was comfortable the entire time, she handled her with care and talked to her like she was her own cat. She was very empathetic, and you could feel her love for animals. I just wish she wasn’t only an emergency vet, I’d love to go to her for all of our animals’ routine care. If you’re looking for an emergency vet that doesn’t just make you feel like a number in line, take your baby here.

Do NOT come here if your animal needs serious help! I went there for the first time on a Wednesday, when my dog was not eating and acting Drowsy. They wanted to run blood work and x-ray. I said Start with blood work . They did, they called sayin he had some kind of infection. Awesome problem solved, gave us antibiotics and we went on our way. We waited a day or two for the antibiotics to start working- still no improvement- hes getting worse. We bring him in on Saturday morning first thing again- have blood work (again) and x-ray done. They find nothing. By now hes vomiting and has bloody diarrhea they were able to get a sample while he had this happen in his cage. Now they say its probably parasites. that we could hospitalize him, or if we can get him his meds he can go home. We are now at $1,400. Fine. If they have given us the meds to fix him- the money is no issue. Bring him home. This dog was getting worse by the minute - again thinking we have to let the meds work! They call me Sunday and guess what.. NO PARASITES! So not only have they charged us over a thousand dollars, but have given my dog several medications he does not need. They tell me to bring him in and admit him. When we get there they realize they are not equipped to care for my dog. So wasting just MORE of our time and money we go to Pieper Memorial Hospital. Where they looked at the SAME X-rays from here and see a blockage in his intestines. They confirm with an ultrasound. Needless to say if I kept trusting this vet my dog would have DIED. They charged me $1400 for NOTHING, and wasted 6 days of my dogs life which could have been all he had left. I did not read the reviews until my third time sitting in the parking lot waiting for answers. Im far from the only one who has been ripped off and their animals not cared at this vet. I suggest save yourself time AND a lot of money and go To a legit state of the art facility IF your animal is showing serious illness. Im sure they will come back with a reply to this review and make this our fault like have tried dozens of times with other non pleased clients. Thats fine. I just want to warn the next person like me. RUN- dont risk your pets life here!

I can’t express how horrific an experience my family had here. The two puppies I rescued came down with parvovirus. We brought them there and the doctor said they’re either going to die or they have a 80% chance of living. After a few days they put one of my puppies down. After several days later they wanted to put my other puppy down. Come to find out they were starving my puppy they were not giving him a G feeding tube and they said that I should take him to hire care or they were going to put him down. Needless to say they have been starving him and cause pneumonia and he almost died because of this. In the end they would not let me take my puppy to another hospital until I paid the balance of 5000.The total charge was $15,000 and they didn’t even take care of either one of the puppies. Please do yourself a favor never take your animals to this vet!!!!!! it was a horrific ordeal thank God I was able to save the other baby at piper memorial.I only hope you pay attention and read these reviews before you bring them there

When we spoke three days ago, you asked me to remove my negative review. Before we began our conversation, you told me that this call is being monitored for quality and training. I obliged, and you were abrupt with me. Your tone on google is even-keeled, lucid, and measured. I never thought I would write a review about a place where we had to put our beloved dog down. Its not a pleasant thing to go through for anyone. The impression that these folks left with us was very positive and that is why I write this review. They were so kind and caring from our initial phone call to when we got there late at night/early in the morning with our very sick 10 year old lab. He had a series of unexpected seizures the night before and early in the morning. Seizures that he hadnt ever had before. We brought him to another facility farther away but we felt rushed out the door and no real answers other than we could go home and let them know if the seizures continue and to make an appointment with one of their neurologists. He had another seizure late that night and we knew didnt want to bring our dog back to the other place. We agonized over what to do with the vet and decided to ease his suffering. The vet and other staff at Veterinary Emergency Center in Canton went above and beyond to make us and our dog comfortable in his last moments. We will never forget this and we are so thankful to have a place where people actually care about the animals and their humans. I would without a doubt recommend this facility to anyone. Theres a special place for folks like you. Thanks so much from Axel and his Mom and Dad

The overnight staff were awesome. Duke was never a good patient at the vet, never aggressive just very anxious. They were so patient with my boy and made the process a little less stressful for the both of us. I really appreciated the nurses taking ink paw prints. Thank you because it is the only full paw print I have. My only suggestion would be is to give pet parents the option of purchasing a clay paw print to be done by the nurses. I’m disappointed in the way it was done at the crematorium. I would have gladly paid for a full paw print that could be baked off and be set on his urn. A large tin with a pile of clay isn’t what I was expecting. Thankfully I have his ink paw prints.

Our beloved cat passed away on Thanksgiving day and we rushed him to this hospital hoping there was still a chance. Unfortunately it was too late and our baby had passed but the exemplary staff provided us the humans the best care and utmost respect. They were able to provide us with peace of mind and explain that his untimely death was likely caused by a heart defect. We were offered the option of an autopsy but the staff member was honest and said it would not likely provide any additional information. We never felt pressured or rushed, and we were given as much time as we needed to hold and say goodbye to our pet, who they had lovingly wrapped in blankets for us. When we were ready to leave they made us a sweet clay paw print and placed him in a nice cardboard casket for burial. The staff was so comforting and allowed us to cry and grieve and be emotional. The cat was stable all day, we picked him up at the end of the day and were transporting him 15 minutes away to Canton VEC, just for overnight monitoring and pain medicine administration. Before we left our vets office, he called Canton VEC and gave them instructions, what medication was working, and the details of the cats condition, very stable, with an excellent prognosis. When we arrived at Canton VEC, we didn’t have a good feeling, very dark and dingy waiting room, as well as exam rooms. Dr. Shapiro was the dr on duty that evening. So, we confirmed with her what our vet’s instructions were, and left the little guy for monitoring. We were out the door 15 minutes, and we get a call from Dr. Shapiro that our cat wasn’t stable, and she wasn’t sure if he was going to make it. We rushed back to have the nurse tell us that Dr. Shapiro was on the phone with our vet, trying to figure out what to do. Fortunately for us, our vet stayed after hours and had us bring him back to the office, where he administered the pain medication Dr. Shapiro was SUPPOSED to have administered. Within 20 minutes the car was stable, comfortable, and calm. Canton VEC apparently gave him a medication that didn’t sit well with him and the condition he had. All they had to do was follow our vets instructions and watch him, instead they almost killed him. We took him to Pieper Memorial hospital in Middletown after that, where they followed our vets recommendations, and he was fine, Home the next day recovering. Never again will we visit Canton VEC. If it wasn’t for our vet stabilizing the situation they caused, we probably wouldn’t have our little buddy here right now. If you love your pet, I would strongly recommend you DO NOT trust their health and well being to Canton VEC. You may end up seriously regretting it.....

Our feline buddy had to be euthanized and I couldnt imagine a veterinary emergency facility being more professional, human and compassionate than they were. We were treated as if we were the only emergency they were dealing with when in fact they were busy. That was our experience and I couldnt recommend them highly enough.

I wasnt very impressed, my dog snapped his back and they gave him pain meds and left me sitting with him on the cold hard floor for almost 2 hours. It was very quiet in there and the girl was visiting with a friend while my dog sat crying on the floor. There wasnt much care or feeling from anyone! They gave us bad advice and we should have reacted quicker, luckily we got him to Pieper Memorial who took him in right away. They were very nice but void of feeling and just didnt seem up to the task of handling emergencies especially since no one was actually doing anything. If they were busy I could understand but in my opinion sitting that long on a cold hard floor with an injured crying dog just isnt right. We will make the trip right up to a better place next time.

Our cat had an emergency and unfortunately didnt make it. He likely had a blood clot that went to his heart or lungs. They took him in and immediately worked on him. After doing everything they could, they were very kind and compassionate to us as we dealt with the sudden and untimely passing of our beloved cat. Very professional staff.

My experience at the Veterinary Emergency Center was honestly the best experience Ive had, compared to all the other facilities I have been to. The staff is beyond wonderful and so caring. Your animal is in GREAT hands here. They love and care for the animals as if it were their own. They allow you to call anytime and how ever many times you want and everytime they answered they were very helpful and sweet. I am so glad I found this place. I believed they truly cared for my dog. After careful examination, it turns out to be a bee sting...Dr. Bertolino and staff were attentive, caring and thorough... One hour later Zoe was home...I highly recommend the Veterinary Emergency Center in Canton

I was extremely impressed and satisfied with the care this facility gave to my dog. Dr. Bartalino and Dr. Haier gave a great explanation as to what was going on, and called me to provide me with new discovered information. They were very caring and comforting during this extremely difficult period for me and my family. I knew my dog was safe with them and was provided great medical assistance. Please be advised, it can be very difficult for pet owners of any kind to rush and bring their pets in for immediate medical attention and provide important feedback regarding their experience while being fair. For sure I will continue to bring my pets to Veterinary Emergency Center. I recommend this establishment to anyone.Thank you,Alexander Garvey

I cannot express adequately in words our sincere gratitude and appreciation for everything that Dr. Bertolino and her staff did for our family. They are a compassionate and truly caring staff and do not rush you into any decisions but rather talk you through the options and listen to your concerns. We can honestly say that our dog would not be alive today if it werent for the efforts and guidance of Dr. Bertolino and her staff. They are the best!

Extremely dissapointed. They did not take the necessary diagnostic seriously for my sick dog and after going there twice within 3 days and sitting in a waiting room 3.5 hours with a dog in pain and 2 big bills for nothing, we ended up taking him elsewhere and it was by then too late. We lost our beloved Coby and have a devastated family. Maybe sooner treatment would have saved him. Maybe not. But I do know just pushing us out the door with no real answers and big bills did no good for him or us. Very dissapointed.

My husband and I took our beloved cat here Sunday morning around 330 am. The Dr and staff were amazing! We ended up having to put him down, and everyone was so caring and compassionate. They gave us all the time we needed and treated Fishbait with so much care and respect. The Dr knelt on the floor next to me after she administered the meds, and waited until he passed, and seemed to genuinely care. We felt no rush at all. They also took care of providing someone to cremate our guy. Today we received a condolance card from them. I highly recommend them! Tara Rowe, New Hartford Ct

I would like to thank the Emergency Vet for the way they handled the passing of our boy Jackson. A few things really set them apart. First and most important is compasion: they handled a sensitive and emotional situation with respect and concern. Secondly the whole staff was sensitive to my needs. Third the Vet herself listened. Unfortunately my wife was away and the vet listened to stories I had about Jackson and sat with me until I was ready to go. This made a very painful situation, less painful. Keith Burlington CT

I see that another very negative review was recently left by a different client and it is similar to my experience, so I suggest sorting the reviews by date instead of by stars since apparently there have been recent changes that are not resulting in good care. This facility caused an infection in my puppys leg and then the vet told me to take him home in the middle of the night with the wrong dose of antibiotic - and meanwhile my puppy was so sick that it took over 36 hours of emergency care (and $1600) at a second vet to cure him of the infection the Canton vet caused. If you have patience, this is the long version. On Weds. Aug. 2, I took my 11 month old puppy in to this vet because he ate one of my pills. Dr. Shannon Bertalino, the founder, examined him and recommended that he stay overnight for treatment with IV fluids and medication. On Thurs. Aug. 3, as I had been told to do, I called to see if he could come home. The vet on duty, Dr. Sanders, told me that it was up to me based on how he seemed to me. Im not a vet so this didnt seem appropriate, and since my puppy was acting normally when I got there I decided to take him home. By the same evening (Thurs. Aug 3) my puppy seemed very listless, he was limping, and his leg where this Vet had put in the IV was swollen to twice its normal size. I called around 7:30 and was told to go back to Canton. When we arrived around 8 pm the vet tech at the front desk didnt even look at his swollen leg - she just checked his gums - and he wasnt even examined or his temperature taken for over 2.5 hours at around 10:30 pm. At that point the vet on duty, who never told me her name, decided she needed to take a blood sample. This took another 45 minutes. Eventually at around 11:30 pm the vet said that since my puppys temperature was normal and his blood tests didnt show anything wrong, she didnt know what was causing the swelling, but that I should give him antibiotics (at a dose that I later found out is only half the dose recommended by the drug manufacturer for a dog of his weight) and an anti-inflammatory. (Since I knew this anti-inflammatory, Carprofen, is potentially harmful, I declined to take it especially since the vet had said she didnt know what was causing the swelling.) By then my puppy had barely moved in 3.5 hours and was breathing very shallowly and limping so badly I had to carry him out to the car. I knew that he was very sick and that he needed care, so I drove down to Pieper Emergency vet in Middletown, where they immediately admitted him and put him on IV antibiotics, pain medication and fluids and other treatments and didnt discharge him until 4 pm Saturday - so he needed an additional more than 36 hours and $1600 of emergency care after this Canton vet had just sent him home. Today, Tuesday, Jamie, the Canton vets business manager, called to ask me to pay for the second visit on Wednesday - even though, as she said herself, the swelling and the infection were a result of the IV that had been put in while he stayed overnight at the Canton facility! As the other review said, good luck collecting any amount from me to cover the costs of a problem they caused themselves and didnt treat appropriately at all.

To start, my family and I had to make an emergency decision to put our cat down. Due to the time of day our family vet was closed. We brought him and right from the start the whole ordeal was very rushed and done so without any respect towards our family and our pet. They made no effort to try and make our cat comfortable. Instead they just threw him down and asked inappropriate questions while we tried to calm him while also making us pay mid euthanasia. The whole experience was extremely disturbing and I hope no other family has to go through this let alone the manner that these vets went about it. Please consider your pets and bring them somewhere else. No animals last few minutes left with us should be spent in added pain and distress.

I had to put my dog down & although that situation is difficult regardless I did not at all like how it was handled by kim maier...I didnt feel like she truly knew what she was talking about & towards the end just wanted us to hurry up& make the decision to euthanize her..i had to put a dog down in the past and the vet made us feel cared for and confident this was the best decision...here it seems like money talks..of course they need to be paid since its how they make a living but as a true animal lover I would work with people or at least come up w payment plans instead of denying any of this. .i know i will never bring any pet here again

I rarely rate places online but I have had 4 visits to the VEC, all at different times , all with different animals. Im just unlucky things happen when my vet is closed! My experiences have always been good, the care is outstanding, and for emergency services I think the price is very reasonable. Dr. Bertolino is so pleasant, approachable, and realistic. I would highly recommend her veterinay center.

NO STARS, negative if I could. Our kitten had a broken leg: visit + xray + splint= $1100. Do not go to this place. Disputed charges over the phone and they were NOT accommodating.

Typically, all the staff there are extremely accommodating and professional and do a wonderful job taking care of my pets that are in need of urgent care (Dr. Shannon Bertolino in particular is great), as well as keep their rates low for an emergency center. However, when I went there last night with my dog I was appalled by what the vet told me I could do as a treatment option. My dog had surgery to remove some fatty tumors and then had his stitches removed but one incision didnt actually heal and was completely open, so I took him in. The vet (Dr. Kimberly Maier) flat out said I could just leave it as it was and it would probably heal on its own. It was a completely open incision through all layers of skin, and she said I could just leave it like that and he would be fine. I dont really think I need to say more than that. What kind of professional veterinarian suggests you can just leave your dog with a 2+ inch open incision slice on his shoulder? It was large and deep enough that I could have stuck two fingers under his skin straight into his body. I had them put staples in to keep it closed, but I still doubt Ill ever take my pets back there, emergency or not, I no longer trust that they know what theyre doing.
