If you are a SpaceX fan like me, this is a cant miss stop if you get a chance. I really wish there was more for a tourist, but maybe in the future when Starbase city is there. And they are already working on a bar at the top of the highbay and a restaurant at the corner of Boca Chica Village. At the time of my visit, SN15 was still hanging from Bluto awaiting a possible second flight, SN16 was in the highbay and the Orbital Integration Tower was in progress. We even saw pieces of a starship (assuming SN11, but could possibly been from any of the starships that have exploded to date), still out in the marsh. The day was rainy and the road was in poor condition. The beach was pretty and might have been inviting with better weather.

Go before they shut this down. You will never be able to get this close to working prototype rockets and the facility that produces them just across the streets. Look into the future from as close as a few 100 feet away. I drove 6 hours one way just too take it all in. Will be back for SNX. A must for future astronauts like I was once, when NASA landed men on the moon. Grownups turn into little kids in aww of this special place. Slept in my car on the beach just to see it for myself. How cool is it to stand so close to a real Starship! Seeing the wreckage of SN8 and SN9 on the pad was a once in a lifetime experience for sure. Driving past the hangers was so amazing. You can drive right down the road and oogle all day. Even my wife who isnt a rocket nut like me was completely impressed. Excited times to witness the next big space race and see a company like SpaceXs cowboy starship during the testing and production stages. Gives me chills Seeing the rocket on the pad waiting to be launched. I really wanted to touch it! Felt like when I was a kid running around with my grandpas old WW1 helmet and a roll of reynolds wrap on pretending to be an astronaut. The guards at the gates were ever so vigilant keeping me out or I would have totally hopped the fence to snag a souvenir of the SN8 wreckage and touched SN9! Giving a Symbolic send off to the revolutionary space ship with its full flow raptor engine that can land itself in what WILL be a historical benchmark in the future of mankind. Blue origin cannot compete. Besides they will all be to tired from climbing up and down the silly ladder to even dream of catching up with SpaceX.

Take highway 4 which is Boca Chica Blvd. ENE from Brownsville. There are numerous stoplights and beware some drivers may have poor driving habits on this highway. This drive is one of diverse landscapes from city to suburbs and to the saline flats near the Gulf of Mexico. It also skirts the Rio Grande to the South. The launch site is approximately 22 mi. From the Brownsville airport. It can be seen from miles away because the structures are the tallest in Cameron County. Always check with the websites for launch dates because Boca Chica is sometimes closed for days during launch dates or static tests.

Lets be honest, Starbase wasnt designed with tourists or casual observers and is still a work in progress with pretty rough roads connecting facilities and the launch pad. That being said, its amazing that they let visitors and photographers walk up and down the streets to get within feet of SN15 & 16, Star Hopper, building and launch facilities, etc. Everything is still actively under construction but it truly feels like youre witnessing history in the making when you visit and see all of the projects SpaceX is undertaking. A must see for fans of the space industry! Probably the only thing cooler would be to bump into Elon in the parking lot for a quick tour of the facilities

Truly an amazing area to see the future of manned spaceflight going forward. If you have the time and the ability to make it this far south it is 100% worth the small extra drive time to get out to Boca Chica. We brought our two young children out to here just so they could see what was being done and hopefully make a memory or two in the process that they can tell their kids when theyre older that they were able to see the place where the rocket ships were being built and tested. Even my wife who is not really a fan of anything technology related found it awfully impressive that you can get so very close to the real ships unlike the Kennedy space Center in Florida. Near the end of an isolated road. Near the beach but not on the beach. The high rise condos of South Padre Island are visible on the horizon but miles away. The rockets look like farm silos with phoney appendages roughly riveted on to make them look like Flash Gordon spaceships. Looks like lots of people working there which must be good for the local economy. And they seem to have success at other launch sites putting up satellites. Its not every day you can see pivotal progress in human history. Except here. Every day workers and engineers are hard at work building the next generation of rockets that will take humans to the Moon and Mars.Starships and Super Heavy boosters are under construction at the assembly facility down the street. They are rolled over to the launch site for testing. You can see giant leaps forward (and a few steps back) if you come here for launches. The freedom here is amazing. You can drive right up to the facility and take pictures or just watch the ships under construction. Just stay on the opposite side of the street and they dont mind. Even if they do SpaceX security is very polite. Its best to watch launches from South Padre Island, or from Rocket Ranch take a pontoon boat ride down the Rio Grande to the edge of the exclusion zone.Even when theres no testing going on this is a beautiful beach with sand dunes and sunrises. You can drive on the beach and have a bonfire. A lot of people show up for the launches or just to check things out, talk about oxidizer/fuel combinations and thermodynamics. If youre into that sort of thing this is the perfect place to make friends.

The future. If you are interested in spaceflight, innovation, rapid assembly or rapid unscheduled disassembly, you HAVE to visit. With the first Super Heavy (Elon calling it Booster 3) being rolled out today, keep an eye on the development to time your visit to coincide with the first orbital flight attempt of a full-stack Starship/Super Heavy (SN20 and Booster 4), likely in August. This site has gone from grain silos to a full-scale vehicle destined to take people to Mars in a year. This is a letter to the editor of the McAllen Monitor about this horrible place:In mid-April I read the front-page article extolling the SpaceX launch site as an area tourist attraction; however, there is more than the glitz and glamour of space travel involved and especially for those who live and work nearby or visit the beaches, parks and refuges. Some might even call SpaceX an eco-apocalypse for our coastal region. There have now been multiple explosions during testing of SpaceX larger prototypes and locals are becoming increasingly concerned as to whether SpaceX values the natural resources of the area, its population and its established ecotourism and fishing/shrimping industries. Now, Space X wants to modify its existing permit with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for the continued development of the SpaceX vertical launch area with the expansion and addition of test, orbital and landing pads, integration towers, associated infrastructure, storm water management features and vehicle parking. Does this newest modified permit also include the additional oil/gas wells that Elon Musk wants to drill there, which have been reported? On April 7, the EPA sent a letter to the USACE that the “SpaceX project may have substantial and unacceptable adverse impacts on aquatic resources of national importance and recommended the denial of the SpaceX project as currently proposed.”This is due to some of the below concerns:1) Numerous project modifications that have been requested over the course of the project history.2) No clarity as to the final scope of a single and complete project for the proposed modification.3) Based on project history, there are concerns that future activities, not yet disclosed, may further impact aquatic resources.4) Aquatic resources that were previously identified as avoided and used as justification during prior alternative analyses are now being identified for impact in the proposed permit modification.5) Based upon the numerous prior modifications to the compensatory mitigation for prior impacts, the EPA is concerned with the ability to provide adequate compensation —- in perpetuity.6) As the project site has evolved, including size and type of testing occurring, the scope of the previous environmental impact statement completed by the Federal Aviation Administration in 2014 may not be consistent with the scope of the current activities.Does it appear Musk’s strategy and actions in our RGV reflect that it’s easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission? Or can’t I hand in my final project papers whenever I want?As an educator, I find SpaceX evident business regulatory strategies alarming, especially when we consider that SpaceX is bordered by some of the most sensitive wetlands and coastal lands in our area.Diane Teter,. Edinburg
