We have had a wonderful experience with Hawthorne Learning! We started our third-grader this past spring with them, just for some extra learning time and academic support during Covid. We anticipated our son would be less than thrilled about going, but to our surprise, he immediately took to it and absolutely LOVED his tutor! (In fact, he was actually sad the day he finished his last tutoring session, because he wouldnt get to go anymore.) We saw him grow leaps and bounds in both his academic capabilities and his self-confidence. We were so impressed, we ended up signing our soon-to-be sixth-grader up for some tutoring sessions during the summer, just to make sure she was ready for middle school. Emma is amazing and has done wonders for our family. We have desperately been trying to get our young daughter access to services and support at school. We hired Emma as an advocate for our family. She has been amazing! She attended two meetings with us. She made sure the school “team” couldn’t bully us or override our concerns. She ensured we understood all of our rights as parents as well as our daughter’s rights to resources. She explained the technical terminology used during the meetings and in email communications we received from the school. She made sure we were as informed and prepared as possible going into each meeting. Moreover, Emma has a commanding presence. The school team seemed to hate her - in the BEST way possible. Emma keeps impeccable notes. She practically ran the meetings. Emma called the school professionals on half truths, glossing over facts, belittling my husband’s concerns because he’s the dad, and minimizing the severity of our daughter’s situation. Emma made sure we got the evaluations and testing we asked for. She ensured we have on record we will be asking for 504 accommodations next year. She also made sure we know how to start that process next fall. We plan to hire her to be our advocate next year and as long as needed to navigate the red tape of the public school system. She kept meticulous notes, called the school representatives on their inaffectiveness, and stopped the conversation regularly to ensure we understood what was being discussed so we were empowered as parents. Emma Hawthorne is a first class communicator, and she taught my daughter how to advocate for herself, and how to anticipate issues before they became problems. With her coaching skills in executive functioning, Emma helped my daughter move from discouraged to empowered. She is amazing with young adults, and totally dedicated. Once, when my daughter had a really big final, Emma texted her encouragement throughout the weekend. We feel so fortunate to have the Hawthorne team for support.

We just started with Hawthorne and we are thrilled. Ive been going to Hawthornes for a few years now and its helped me so much. I had 4 or 5 Fs Freshman year of high school but I was able to completely turn around my grades and pass all my classes. I started my tutoring about 3 weeks before the date of my final in Stats. I had completely checked out of the class after week 3 in a 10 week quarter, and I needed to pass stats to complete my Gen Ed requirements and get my associates, and after 8 sessions of tutoring in just a couple weeks I took my final today and feel great about how I did. Talking to my professor, Ill be able to pass the class despite having a 40% in the class up until the final. Tim and Jess were great at helping me understand everything from basic concepts about what standard deviation is, to more complicated stuff like testing for means and proportions and interpreting my P-values correctly from the testing. Everybody was great every step of the way, they considered the situation I was in, and took it very seriously and did as much as they could to help me do well. The way I view things, the tutoring was a great success, and I cant recommend it enough to anyone. If I need any tutoring again down the line, Ill be coming back here.

We sought support from Hawthorne Learning Solutions on behalf of our (soon to be) 4th grade son this past summer. After a consistent pattern in which our child had a difficult time sustaining academic growth (even with school-based interventions), our son was often deflated about school. We saw him as a bright, thoughtful, curious kid, but this was not always reflected in his academic output.Emma and Matt helped us better understand our sons lagging skills and identifed ways to help his tutor target learning strategies to better meet his needs. I have personally worked with Matt and can tell you that even at university level of education, he was incredibly helpful with improving how I managed multiple high-priority projects as well as the approach taken with each. Matts greatest attributes in working with me was that he understood what his limitations were in how he could help me (university level statistics, etc.) and had a swathe of resources to bring in as needed. The skills I have learned from him in terms of project management I have brought to my work today.

Matt and Emily at Hawthorne Learning Solutions are amazing, and helped our family negotiate High School and beyond in many ways. We first met them soon after my sons diagnosis in 10th grade with ADHD. I called in a panic 6 weeks from the end of the school year in a panic, he was failing most classes. They met with me to assess his immediate needs, and focused on the tutoring and encouragement needed to pull him through passing all his classes. As the next school years started, Emily worked with me and the school to ensure that instructional strategies were in place. Matt worked with Sam and the teachers to make sure his assignments were clear and tutored him throughout the next couple of years until graduation, and he would not have graduated with that help.. Matt was, and continues to be, a true mentor and friend.My other son also worked with Matt, starting with tutoring on individual difficult assignments. When it came time for SAT Prep, Nick had several private sessions, focused specifically on his needs, with no wasted time. Nick achieved a very high SAT score, earning him a merit based scholarship! Matt also guided him through the process of writing his college application essay. Nick had a great idea, but was struggling to put it on paper, and in the end it was a wonderful, heartfelt essay, and he was accepted into the school of choice.I cant say enough about how knowledgeable, caring and invested in success everyone at Hawthorne Learning Solutions is! Hawthorne was recommended to us by two other high school families who had students struggling with math. We had hired a college student to tutor our daughter in the past, but we felt that she needed an environment that had a better understanding of students with IEPs and disabilities. Our daughter had three math goals in her IEP, and she reached two out of the three within just a few months. We appreciate all of the progress she has made with Hawthornes help. The team is excellent at communication. I love hearing how each session went, and the specific skills my child is working on.

Both of my kids have been tutored by Matt and Emmas team at Hawthorne Learning Solutions, and I (and my late wife, who found them) couldnt be more satisfied with the level of care theyve received. They both participated in HLSs SAT Prep classes as well as having received tutoring in various subjects. In fact, my daughter took the SAT prep in the spring and got a 1220 on the SAT in May (680 Reading/Writing, 540 Math). However, she wanted to raise her math score (math isnt her best subject to begin with), so she had three sessions with HLS before the August SAT exam, and she brought her score up by 90 points, to 630!I cant say enough good things about my kids and my experience with HLS! Highly recommend Matt and has team. With the ACT prep class, our daughters score when up 4 points from start to finish, and Matt was always available and flexible for any last minute one-on-one time with her. Last year he helped reduce the stress and get younger daughter through WHAP with great success. This year she just finished the SAT course and improved her score by 240 points on the first write, from her PSAT. Very accommodating and cant imagine going through all this without him.

In 2011 my younger son, mother, and husband were all dx with cancer. Not only did my older son have adjustment issues following the cancer diagnoses surrounding him, he was also in a bad car accident and suffered a significant head injury. This caused nightly battles for him with schoolwork and daily struggles in the classroom. Nobody seemed to understand what he was going through with the aftermath of it all. He wanted to drop out of school at the age of 7 years old! And it didnt much get better as the years went on. He fell deeper and deeper into an isolated hole. He was desperate for support! We were all exhausted and didnt know what to do any longer. I found a piece of paper at a doctors office with Emilys name and contact info. I was at a complete loss and handed my disaster over to her. She was incredible! She took control of it all. She called me and texted me and checked in to make sure my son was taken care of initially and for months to come. Those months have turned into years of support that she has given not only my son but my whole family. If there is ever a time I need back-up or have questions regarding my kids and school, I call Emily! She knows how to navigate the school system and is an amazing student advocate for kids with special needs! Emily, thank you from the bottom of my heart for being there for us! I cannot sing their praises enough. I came to Hawthorne Solutions looking for someone to help with my sons homework and to get Executive Functioning coaching. We struggled for years trying to get the right 504, diagnoses, medication regimen for my sons ADHD and still could not figure out what he needed as far as support at school or how to advocate for him. Within 3 weeks we are feeling hope. Emma came to our IEP meeting and helped us navigate the school system. She is professional, organized and is exemplary in her advocacy. My daughters 2nd grade teacher recommended Hawthorne Learning to me when my daughter began losing confidence in math and falling behind her peers. We were in the midst of diagnosing her ADHD and we were standing on shaky, unfamiliar ground as her parents, trying to navigate her learning needs, medications, and how to best support her. Her dad and I could have both helped her with math ourselves, but we knew that at that time she needed someone who could also help her with executive functioning and who better understood her ADHD and could scaffold the learning environment that best suited her needs. Emma & Matt have worked with her to GREATLY improve her understanding of second grade math and have moved into third grade skills this summer. She is confident, volunteers to share her skills in class, and is eager to go to tutoring now. We are so happy with how they’ve been able to help her that we’ve continued seeing them regularly to give our daughter that consistent boost in confidence and added educational resource. Hawthorne Learning Solutions has been wonderful for our son Kyle. He was a sophomore at WWU last year and struggling in his classes. Matthew met with Kyle and helped him with studying strategies and time management. Now Kyle is a junior and still going to Hawthorne Learning to continue improving his study skills. I honestly dont think Kyle would still be at WWU if we hadnt found Hawthorne.

HLS takes an individualized approach to the needs of the student. They really get to know the kids and cater the tutoring to their strengths, instead of applying a standardized approach that works for most. They also provide good advice and support for working with the school to maximize the adademic success of your child, based on specific learning needs. Most importantly, they make their sessions positive and encouraging so the student enjoys the process and gains confidence.

I almost dont know where to begin with Matt & Emily. We continue to have an such a wonderful experience with Hawthorne Learning Solutions and all the tutors they employ. Their work with my child has been beyond tutoring, beyond helpful and effective. My son raised his Algebra Math grade by two grades. When he became severely injured and required surgery, he was unable to tolerate sitting in a conventional classroom. Emily went beyond advocating and worked closely with the Bellingham Public School district on his behalf and became a short term teacher for him through the Home and Hospital Program. Matt also worked diligently tutoring my son, who was taking a full load of classes through WCC Running Start in addition to the high school math class. They worked on organization, time management and executive function skills for all of his classes. These are life long skills that my son will continue to benefit from.
