I feel like Ive been paying for my child to learn how to deal with disappointment. My 5-yr-old began this summer. He noticed other students getting weapons. He wanted one. We consulted the brochure about what it takes to earn a weapon, but the language was vague and un-measurable. There was no clear set of actions, behaviors, or learning outcomes listed that we could work towards; it was if the student catches the attention of the instructor. So my son answered questions correctly, tried his best to follow directions and listen. He was even used to demonstrate something correctly. He worked hard every week only to watch someone else get a weapon. So we asked about it and were given the same vague response about the instructor noticing the student. Being educators, my husband and I used this situation as a teaching opportunity. We taught our son how to be disappointed and cheer and clap for the other person--how to be a good sport. Every week, it continued. He would be disappointed, look back at his dad, and then straighten up and clap for the kid with the weapon. I later learned from another parent that the $15 weapon is part of an honors class that involves more money.If they want to use the weapon to bait the parent into spending more money, okay, but think about how this affects children who actually take the classes seriously. Some children are extrinsically motivated to succeed. So dangling a weapon out there to keep them coming but never awarding it is mean, cruel, and shady---especially when the driving force is money from the parent. Hes 5; he has plenty of time to learn that the world is mean, cruel, and shady.My point is this: if you want to take your child to Bartlett ATA for fun, to burn off some energy, to get them out of the house,--like recess in a uniform--this might be the place for you. If you REALLY want your child to learn discipline and your child REALLY wants to learn martial arts (and different moves), look somewhere else. You will be disappointed here.To respond to your reply below, Bartett ATA, this is the information you should have shared when my husband emailed you AND asked you in person. You havent been seeing him because we were tired of NOT KNOWING why he wasnt invited to the advanced classes. I knew you would respond in this manner, so I will again say it was NOT KNOWING what you were looking for that was the problem. He missed TWO classes because he had a sinus infection and we were being considerate of the other children. Seth took and passed his test, at which time my husband was told regular attendance was the key to getting the weapon. When we asked about his progress, NO ONE shared this information with us about his progress and the requirements--this is all we wanted. We didnt want special treatment. We wanted clarification. Too bad it took a public review to get the information weve been asking for privately. I stand by my initial review. Improve your communication.

I have been training here for almost 11 years now. The instructors that teach are some of the greatest people I have ever got a chance to meet. They have helped me become the person that I am today. They work on so many life skills for kids and adults. Anyone can do this from any age. I’m so glad my mom signed me up when I was 4 because I don’t know where I would be at today.

ATA is a great place for learning self confidence, communication, and teamwork. The instructors are inspiring and want nothing but for you and your child to succeed. My three kids have learned to communicate and push each other with forms and sparing. My youngest has learned self confidence and not be afraid when sparing. It’s not just for kids, as we see couples, daughter/mom, son/mom and everything in between. We are proud to call ATA our family.

I’ve waited a long time to write this review, as I’m never sure how to quantify how much I love this place that has become my second home. My family and I started out at another school in town, but circumstances eventually led us to switch to Bartlett ATA and we couldn’t be happier. From the very beginning, we’ve been treated like family. Chief Master Candidate Betsy Stevens and Master Tony Rosa truly care about their students and want them to not only learn good martial arts techniques, but to learn important life skills and be successful outside martial arts as well. All levels train here; from brand new beginners to those that are competing (and winning) on a national and international level. However, everyone is treated with the same respect and attention no matter their level or ability. The instructors are all top notch; they excel at taekwondo and teaching, but are also great role models. Even the teenagers here (students and assistant instructors) are the kind of kids you want your younger kids to be around. My whole family trains here - myself, my husband and our 3 children. We not only enjoy the physical and mental aspects of training, but the camaraderie and sense of community. Bartlett ATA has become our extended family and our children have made many close friendships here. There are many choices in life as to what to spend our hard earned money on each month, but this isn’t a hard choice. Hands down, this the best investment we can make in our physical and mental well being and I’m proud to be part of Bartlett ATA.

Master Rosa and crew are simply the best. They actually care about your child and their progression. During Covid-19, they took every precaution to keep everyone healthy and safe while continuing training. My daughter has gained confidence and makes better grades in school all from the discipline bestowed upon her by Bartlett ATA!

There aren’t enough great things to say about Bartlett ATA! My son started in late 2019 at 6 years old. He has focus issues, and it’s hard to keep him interested in things, especially for a long period of time. He absolutely loves going here! The staff has been incredible! Am glad I decided to take advantage of the 4 week special and see how my daughter would do. From the first day during the orientation the instructor was very good at making my daughter feel comfortable and making it fun for her. We signed up to be full member day one. One of the most important attributes of our organization is that our instructors provide us with quality training and this training carries over into our desire to compete. The training we gain, in my opinion, helps to strengthen us physically, mentally, and spiritually. Our training also translates into our school being of the top schools in ATA for tournament competition. Our master, Tony Rosa, is part of athlete development for team USA so we get a chance to participate in seminars from some of the best competitors and instructors in sparring and combat weapon sparring. Another great feature of our school is that we not only do well in individual competition, but we also compete in team sparring. Master Rosa also plays an important role in the ongoing development of that aspect of ATA. Over the years Ive seen our school build a brand. We are known and respected nationally. Lastly, I cannot stress enough how important it is to have quality instructors and staff guiding us in our endless pursuit of training in taekwondo. We have the opportunity to constantly be trained by higher ranks ranging from 4th degree black belt to 8th degree black belt. Not all schools have this many high ranks instructing students. My son Tréquinn has been active in Taekwondo for over a year. I enrolled him in Taekwondo because he was having behavior issues in school. He started in Oct. of 2016, when I was getting a call from his school at least once a week. Jan. 2017, the calls stopped.
