Shelton Family Dental is housed in a converted row house. The outside is fairly plan, but the first floor has been recently renovated. During our first visit, lots of established patients remarked that things looked so good since they had last been there. The treatment rooms have not been updated yet and we didnt have a chance to ask if there are plans to renovate them.The practice is following Covid-19 protocols well, checking temperatures before anyone is allowed upstairs, as well as oxygenation status, and requiring masks.The younger Dr. Shelton took the time to explain well how to floss to children and established good rapport. The appointment itself was smooth and time-efficient even though we started a little later than scheduled. Overall, I would recommend the practice because of the dentists ability to converse with patients in a knowledgeable way and build rapport.

I have attended this dental office since I was a child. The office is like home. Both dentists are knowledgeable, competent, empathetic and caring. They really care about oral health but also about the patient as an individual. Recently they renovated downstairs and it looks amazing! If you have reservations about seeing a dentist, this is the place to go because they will make you feel welcomed and safe.

This place is BLACK owned and definitely safe for black people to visit. Ive had my best dental experiences here and I plan to make this my permanent general dentist. Something about this office just feels like home. Dr.Shelton is so kind, extremely thorough and attentive to my needs. He always makes sure I fully understand my medical options and takes the extra time to answer any questions and concerns I have. This office is also well connected, so his referrals to other dental specialists were always high quality and top notch. Thank yall so much, God bless everyone in that office.

It was my first time there & I didn’t know what to expect since I haven’t been to the Dentist in a minute. every one there was very nice & made me feel comfortable. Leaving out we were discussing a procedure I’m having done & a customer leaving out assured me( I WOULD BE FINE) that’s my new Dentist

Dr. Shelton, Dr. CeCe, and their staff are always friendly and knowledgeable about whats best for your dental care. The Hygienist that cleaned my teeth was awesome. Her name was Nicole or Nikki. She shared alot with me about my teeth and recommended great things to better care for my teeth. I highly recommend them for the best dental care.

I had a 6month routine check up today . It went really well as always. Everyone is so nice and caring. At times I feel self conscious about my teeth but they make you feel very welcomed and comfortable.

Dirty. Slow. Antiquated. Possibly the worst dental experience in my life. I selected this place because I wanted to support a black owned business, and I immediately regretted it. Against my best judgment, I stayed after observing dirty dusty walls and work spaces. I’m so sorry I let them work in my mouth. I’m not sure all of their instruments were sterilized. The plastic retractor, ( that’s right “retractor “) looked washed and reused multiple times. But worst of all, I didn’t observe the dentist wash his hands. He was wearing gloves but I didn’t observe him wash his hands. I saw him wearing gloves while typing on the computer, which was covered in plastic wrap, then he came directly from the computer to my mouth. I really wish I had not allowed the exam. Within a few hours my throat is itching and my stomach feels weird. I thought that I owed this black owned business patience and understanding for being sub standard, but there is no excuse and they need to do better or close. Who puts a palm sized GLASS mirror in someone’s mouth to examine their teeth?? Shelton family dental does! I finally left without allowing the dentist to finish,but he had already put his dirty gloves in my mouth.I have more complaints but I just had to address the major ones. I regret wasting my time and risking my health to support a black owned business who doesn’t honor their clients.

The experience was great!! Dr. Benjamin Shelton is so sweet and so sincere. Absolutely loved meeting him. The dental assistant was excellent as well and made me feel very comfortable. Check them out! 😊

Dr. B is amazing, PATIENT, and very knowledgeable. I was soooooo nervous! He took the time out to explain the process and even showed a video how certain procedures are conducted.

I scheduled an appointment in mid June, 2021 for July, 21,2021. Filled out the 1st form, but the new patient form states it is a 2018 form and being in Healthcare myself out dated forms should not be used and if nothing has changed on the from 2018 to 2021 (3yrs) The appointment scheduler should have indicate that and a correction should have been made to the online form. This goes to show no one cares or is paying attention to new business or the business at hand. The receptionist did not even offer to reschedule the appointment she apologized and stated my appointment was given to someone else. 1st and last time going and wouldnt recommend based on my 1st hand experiece.

I have been going to Shelton Family Dental since I was a kid. Its a great family owned business. They are professional and treat you like family. Great customer service and very efficient.

Let me say this outside the location being sketchy so are the people who work there . They declined service after they had received my state Identification, place of employment and insurance card . They demanded I give them my social security number on top of that. When I asked how do they safe guard my information they young lady at the desk couldn’t advise me other than the shred it . After telling the I decline to give them my social security I sat for several minutes until the young lady at the desk said can she help me .... I asked her was I still being seen she said no . At no point was I told I was not being seen , no clear communication. Her attitude was extremely unprofessional as she said I’m not arguing when I asked a simple question to which it could not be answered. There was no apology saying unfortunately this is the company policy or we can see you because . What I’m more uncertain of us to why they would still need your social security information and have no true way of safe guarding client information. No secure kiosk , just a write you social here on this paper basically exposed so that I can now place it somewhere with no real explanation .The saddest part is this was an effort to support a local community dentist and the service and communication is subpar.

We love Shelton Family Dental. Drs. Shelton are always so kind and gentle when working with my daughter. So much so, that at four-years-old she actually looks forward to going to the Dentist rather than being frighten. Thank goodness the practice is accommodating. She had been suffering tooth pain and Shelton was able to get us in the same morning I made a call.It really means a lot for me that my daughter can be serviced by professionals who resemble her.m and treat her well. Representation matters and I’m so thankful she can be seen by the Shelton Family Dental practice.

Been going here for awhile now. First my sister was going than after I had a bad experience with the dentist I was going to she suggested them, been going ever since. Me and my sister have diabetes so we are constantly having teeth trouble as one of the consequences. Also I never have a problem with finding parking and its in an area that you dont have to pay for parking, thats another thing that was better than the last place I was going. Friendly staff and the dentist doesnt constantly change, its always Dr. Sheldon, again another improvement from where I was going before.

This dentist office only has a hygienist once a week on a Friday where they close on a half a day from my experience you want to have a hygienist to clean your teeth they do thorough work I received one from them and it was not thorough she didnt even floss my teeth and thats not good there was no hygienist available It was not Dr Sheldon it was his daughter who cleaned my teeth and she did not floss them it was done in less than 30 minutes the quickest cleaning I ever had in my life

I had such a horrible experience at Shelton Dental. At first, I was not going to leave a review but after the 3rd “reminder” to leave a review from the office, I figured I would because this office is UNPROFESSIONAL! I went to this office on a Monday, and they advised me that I had to get a tooth removed. By the time I left, it was after 5 (they dragged this appointment by the way, I was almost there for 2 hours). While I was there, the interaction with the front desk felt more like…. “What do you want”, instead of a “How may I help you?”Due to leaving after 5, I was not able to call the referred oral surgeons because they were closed. Since I was in so much pain, I literally set an alarm to call the oral surgeon the next day. I scheduled an appointment with the oral surgery for Wednesday and they advised me to have Shelton Dental send in a referral and my x-rays. By 8:30 that morning, I had requested the referral & x-rays from Shelton Dental and they advised that they would send it. The next day (surgery day), I called the oral surgeon to confirm that they received the referral & x-rays but they had only received the referral. I called Shelton Dental at 8:30 am & they advised that they would send it right over. 10:30, still no X-rays and they told me the same story - I thought it was sent. I get to the oral surgeon at 1:30 and they have not received the X-rays. They kept me on hold, told me they were sending it once again, NOTHING! Shelton Dental stopped answering my phone call but answered my work cellphone! Between 2:30 - 3:45, no one is answering and I am being hopeful because the answering services were taking messages and attempting to connect with them. At 3:50, Shelton Dental finally picked up and after telling me the that they were busy with clients (I AM A CLIENT, that took off of work and I am wasting my time because of their unprofessionalism), they put me on hold, “while they sent in”. I waited 10 minutes on hold and just knew they weren’t going to send it. I stayed on hold all the way to Shelton Dental’s office (50 minutes in all), at 4:40 I get to Shelton Dental and finally hang up. The receptionist asked me to wait in the car but I was not waiting in the car; I had been waiting since Tuesday (with tooth pain), and was upset that I took a day off of work to get this oral surgery, just for Shelton Dental not to send the X-rays.Dr. Shelton walked past me and didn’t speak. When he walked past me again, I spoke and very professionally explained what happened – he did not apologize. After that, I waited to get my X-rays then left! I will never step foot in that office. I was trying to be supportive to this practice but honestly, they’re not professional and the office is so outdated and it actually looks creepy in there.

My initial contact was not of proper protocol. It was explained to me my last visit reschedule would incounter a$25increase to make the visit $65 . But instead she explained that I was told and agreed on a visit of$ 105 instead. Never the less I still took charge by saying, its my fault I misunderstood. Can I pay $65 today and $40 on Friday. But I was consistently informed todays visit is $105 . But Ive been using this dentist office for 6 years.

Do not recommend. Very unprofessional. I tried my hardest to support a black owned business, but this dentist office has terrible customer service. I scheduled an appointment for a crown and paid half of the money upfront. My appointment was scheduled for a Monday, and they have a 48 hr cancellation policy, but are closed on the weekends and close at 12pm on Fridays. The Friday before my appointment I had swimmers ear, and called and provided a text to the office saying I needed to cancel and reschedule my appointment. No response. Monday rolls around, and I call and request a new appointment date. They reschedule. Never mentioned a broken appointment fee.My husband already did not like his experience when the office placed his crown weeks prior, and accidentally missed his appointment. He was called and told he would have to pay a $65 missed appointment fee. Due to all his circumstances I decided it was best for me not to receive treatment at the office. I went to the office to get a refund for my deposit only to be told NO, that I broke my first appointment and the other fund were applied to my husbands account. Now I am out of $130, and do not have a crown. It is apparent that this dental office needed my $130 more than I did. With old equipment, and a new front desk worker every week they should try harder to keep their customers.

My experience at Shelton Family Dental was extremely pleasant.I went there because I was having alot of pain with my tooth and a friend recommended contacting them. I was able to get an appointment within a few days and the receptionist and Dr. Shelton(female) were both awesome. I ended up having to 2 teeth extracted but Dr. Shelton was very gentle and reassuring. I would definitely return again for service and recommend this dental family to anyone seeking a pleasant, clean and professional environment.

Billing is their focus... not patient care. The Patient coordinator gives a power struggles versus customer service.

My experience was very positive, Ive been going to Dr. Shelton for some years now. The atmosphere is pleasant, as are the people who work there. They make you feel comfortable and ease any tensions you might have.

I scheduled for a cleaning and they took 20 slides of X-ray from my teeth. My mouth got hurt and it was conducted very unprofessional, dirty,...One cleaning job took 3 hours of my time.Dr. Was friendly and nice but the cleaning job was like I am brushing my teeth myself:/Overall don’t recommend this place.

As a new patient I was will pleased with how well they responded to my questions and addressed my fears. During this pandemic, I was also impressed with the measure of safety precautions used. Thanks Shelton Family Dental see you at my next appointment!

Got 2 teeth extracted yesterday. It was a little tough getting them out because those teeth were way in there but the doctor was great. Kept making sure I was comfortable & kept asking was I ok. Definitely a great family dentist office.

Growing up just a mile from here, Shelton Family Dental on the corner of 33rd and The Alameda has been a part of my landscape for 30+ years but I’d never had a reason to go as we had a family dentist. But alas, he retired, and I knew just the place to try. And I am SO glad that I did!! Parking was easy peasy and EVERYONE was kind and friendly, probably the friendliest front desk staff I’ve experienced. The cleaning and exam were great and I’ve set my appointment for my next visit. If you’re looking for a new dentist give this family owned company a try (40+ years operated by the father and now his daughter is a dentist there too!). You’ll be glad that you did!!

Just moved to the area and went here to get teeth cleaned and cavity fixed. Every one was super nice would highly recommend for a nice friendly dentist!

The visit was pleasant, calming, and careful. My only concern is that is seemed to go too fast and i am concerned something might be missed. But my teeth feel clean and healthy so maybe i dont know what i am talking about.

Great patient-focused family dentist. They pre-send you paperwork so you can submit it online before you go in. I was in and out in an hour and that included taking a full bank of x-rays because I havent been in so long. Friendly, they explain what theyre looking for, whats good and whats bad. No judgment for how long its been, just making sure I got the care I needed.

I was nervous at first because I never been to a dentist office that was unknown by my family, but since I changed my insurance, I was lost and trying to figure out where to go. I googled and found this place, and they relieved my pain. I give them a 5star rating because they were courteous, clean, friendly, and got the job done without a tear.-TD

I dont like this office. I went there for a couple of years and they always had me waiting. If my appointment was at 8:00AM, they would have me waiting until 9:00AM. I didnt realize anything was wrong with this until I talked to someone who did this type of work for a living that told me that they probably do this so they can bill my insurance by the hour. The last time I went, I had to threaten to leave before they saw me. They also have ridiculous fees for canceling. Its in a lower end neighborhood so their practices seem extremely predatory (ie. a scam), especially since the surrounding area is lower class. My time is precious. I wont be going back. I would not recommend this dentist.
