Spectacular school. Ive trained at several places in Austin over the past 7 years, and know students and instructors from almost every school in the area. This place is a HIDDEN GEM. Instructor has insane technical ability, a clear and helpful teaching style, a BEAUTIFUL gym with the best mats Ive seen anywhere, bar none (which are cleaned at the end of almost every class, and show it)...And the bonus: class sizes are super small. Its like this one little unknown secret, right in the heart of west campus. That means lots of quality instruction and one on one time. I really, finally, feel like Im part of a team here--something I havent felt strongly anywhere else.Highly recommended.

I trained here as a kid, and loved the competitive atmosphere on the mats. Coach Dave was friendly and taught different techniques each week that helped me succeed on the mats and in competitions across the state. I highly recommend anyone to try it out-- no matter what your skill level is.

I absolutely love Austin Jiu-Jitsu! Ive been with the school for just about five years now and it feels like home. The coach, Dave Thomas, is extremely talented, knowledgeable and encouraging. My training partners are consistently safe yet challenging. There is a very unique and inviting atmosphere at this school. I highly recommend it to anyone, whether youre just starting out or been grappling for years.

Coach Dave is a great teacher. He is able to break techniques down to their essential parts and explain them thoroughly. I appreciate very much how safety is stressed in the gym. It is a welcoming environment, I feel at home at Austin Jiu Jitsu.

The gym, itself, is shared among different offerings of martial arts. So, dont be surprised if you drop in and there is a taekwondo class going on. The BJJ group sessions are mostly in the evenings and are comprised of a good mix of differing skill levels. Being a newbie-White-belt I found it to be welcoming and challenging at the same time. Im 40 and an executive sales rep. I roll with 19 year olds and 50+. So its for all adult ages. Its also safe. Dave, the instructor, emphasizes safety and technique above all else. If you want a workout that trains you in MA responsibly, without getting your face rearranged this is the place.

I love training at Austin Jiu Jitsu, its now part of my lifestyle. Ive been consistently training there for over a decade. Daves passion for BJJ, coaching and fitness are inspiring and set an incredibly high bar. The technique and instruction is very practical and continues to evolve.Daves team is a great community. Were training partners, learning from our losses, sharing our successes. And after each class, Im exhausted. Swing in to check out a class, the schedule is on the website.

Austin Jiu-Jitsu is the best! Coach Dave Thomas is welcoming to anyone interested in learning. He is very knowledgeable, and always open to suggestions or questions on techniques, even from someone who has just walked in the door for the first time. The school has a small group of dedicated training partners, much like a family. There is a wide range of experience and skill level within the group, which I think helps everyone improve while training together. Several within this group also help Coach Dave teach. Safety always comes first, but the group is still laid back and has fun while learning and training. I recommend Austin Jiu-Jitsu to anyone willing to step through the door to learn something difficult but extremely rewarding and fun.

I had never tried martial arts and am still very much a beginner so Im thankful to have started at Austin Jiu-jitsu. I have been so impressed at how welcoming and kind the people are there. Everyone practices safety and respect while being competitive. Not only are the partners great, Coach Dave shows through his training how knowledgeable and dedicated he is to teaching BJJ. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone.

Jiu-Jitsu is a trick Im using to prevent Alzheimers. Its like a work out puzzle. It also makes me feel really strong - way more interesting than lifting at the gym. Ive been taking instruction from Dave for about a year now. he is very serious about safety so you wont get hurt in class and hes got a great sense of humor and makes bjj fun.

I love Austin Jiu Jitsu! Ive trained at a few other places in town and this place is by far the best! Ive been there well over a year now and couldnt be happier. The owner Dave is a lifelong martial artist, a great teacher, and just an all around solid guy. He is exceedingly knowledgeable, always positive, and excellent at adjusting to the skill level of whoever hes grappling with. He really creates a great atmosphere of learning and constructive competition. Everyone in class is also really nice and supportive as well. Ive had bad experiences at other gyms with a lot of alpha male BS and insecure dudes thinking every class is a UFC match. Not the case at AJJ. Everyone is just there to work hard, become better grapplers, and have fun. This positive environment is also why theres plenty of women in class as well. It really is an awesome place that I would highly recommend to absolutely ANYONE. You will definitely learn a lot!
