DMA is the best BJJ gym available in the DC area. The staff is incredibly welcoming and patient with people new to the sport. They take time to get to know members and make them feel like they are part of the DMA community. I highly recommend this gym to anyone interested in trying BJJ.

An amazing gym with a great group of people. As a white belt new to bjj, I couldnt have asked for a better place to get introduced to the sport. The gym has a great mix of both new and experienced fighters, knowledgeable coaches, and a welcoming vibe. I highly recommend it if youre looking for a place to train in DC.

This gym is incredible. You feel like family the minute you walk in the door. Scott Dance welcomed me like an old friend. The coaches are flat-out amazing. The grappling class in the evening has some seriously talented martial artist. The atmosphere is very light, and the environment is always very fun. The Boxing class Coach Tone teaches on the weekend was definitely one on my favorites.

I contacted District Martial Arts to visit for a class during a trip to the DC area and they were extremely accommodating and welcoming. I did their 6:30am jiu jitsu class and it was great! The instructor was welcoming and knowledgeable, the other students were really nice and made me feel like a part of the family. The training was also fantastic; the instructor went over closed guard to back transitions and gave me great feedback on details I was missing. It was the best way to start my morning! Highly recommend giving them a try!

The gym tries to make everyone feel welcome regardless of their skill level, and they do a great job of that. DMA is for everyone, its class schedules can fit into anybody’s lifestyle , and you can go hard or easy as you like during your chosen martial arts class. You can improve your health, and/or improve your skills further with DMA.

All of the coaches here are extremely experienced and have excellent teaching skills. Like anything in Ballston, its pretty expensive, but Im sure thats because of high rents in the area; I never felt like I was being overcharged or ripped off. They offer a broad range of classes with the primary focus seeming to be on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The one downside is that unlike some other gyms there is no open mat or free time outside of classes. There are also essentially no weights or other similar equipment so if youre interested in strength training youll likely have to find another gym which means two memberships. But for what it is, which is a training studio for high level martial arts, DMA is a superb gym with some of the best coaches in the state.

Awesome facility and great group of men that run the programs. There is plenty of variety when determining which classes you want to take. I was unsure when I first started training so I dipped my hand in different classes such as wrestling, boxing, bjj, muay thai, and mma. I enjoyed all of them and the instructors do a great job of critiquing your technique during class and they are always willing to talk after if you have any questions.

Clean and neat place with the gym having been well-designed.The training is suitable for any level. Coaches understand where you are and work with you from there. So general lesson goes on but coaches are very friendly, welcoming and do not leave anyone behind by, per say, asking if anyone wants a move/exercise to be shown again or just answer your questions if you have. Like anywhere, the more you are involved, the more you will learn.Other things: music is upbeat; the view to the street is great, and just generally attractive atmosphere to work out.

I have over 20 years of law enforcement and security experience. I can sincerely say that the Submission Wrestling, Boxing and Brazilian Jujitsu techniques that the instructors at District Martial Arts have taught me. I have been able to apply to self defense techniques in a situation that requires me to subdue or control a criminal without throwing a single strike. The instructors at District Martial Arts are exceptionally tough but importantly they instruct with respect, kindness, a team atmosphere and always at any given time give feedback on how you are progessing.

I am SO happy I found District Martial Arts! I had never boxed a day in my life, so I was a bit intimidated when I walked in for the first time, BUT the staff and coaches made me feel extra comfortable and confident that I would learn something on my first day. DMA is very clean (I’m a germaphobe so this is important to me), and it has a very “homey” feeling. Everybody makes an effort to get to know you and help you with body positioning and technique. I took the boxing class. The coach is SO FUNNY! He made the class enjoyable by keeping the mood light, but professional. I truly felt challenged and inspired to pursue boxing as a real hobby. Not to mention, the workout was AMAZING! I swear I woke up and saw abs the next day! Lol. Seriously though, if you want to learn effective techniques, have a fun time, and get a killer workout, come here. You’ll be just as happy as I was!

Scott put togther a class for my Girl Scout Troop to learn Jui Jitsu!! He and another instructor, Ishla, both were amazing at teaching us the technique and making it a super fun class! They both made sure we had the moves down before moving on to the next activity and came around to give each of us individual help. We had never done a jui jitsu class before and now we know the basics and I am excited to learn more, definitely recommend!!

Update:They just had a grand opening at the new location! New bigger location at 927 N Quincy St (with free parking) in the middle of Ballston. The atmosphere and community havent change at all. New wrestling and yoga classes and expanded jiujitsu, muay thai and MMA classes. Welcoming to all levels. The gym community has grown but the welcoming culture hasnt changed a bit. Highly recommend!Original Post:Training w these guys for several years now. Lost 50lbs since I started. Started w limited knowledge of any grappling or striking but felt like there was a class for my level (even as I continued to progress). Training partners at the gym range from complete novices to professional MMA fighters. Coaches take a personal interest in the development of each student. Kamal is a world-class wrestler, and has fought/grappled against the best in the world (Khabib Nurmagamedov, Rafael Dos Anjos, Jim Miller, Xande Ribeiro, Shinya Aoki...to name a few). Charles is an amateur MMA fighter and and MMA analyst, Scott and Sam are both high-level bjj black belts, and Mark is a former D1 wrestler. Dawson and Antonio, the boximg coaches, offer both conditioning and a skill work. Richard, Krav instructor, has trainined w krav foundational members and is former austraAust military. Highly recommend! Always something interesting going on here...good atmosphere w friendly people.
