I’ve used V&V several times as I go to school in Ames and needed a hairstylist away from home. My past few experiences have been totally fine. However, this past appointment was easily the worst hair experience I’ve had to date. I went in to get my hair colored and cut a few inches. I ended up having Josh as my stylist. He didn’t get the color all the way through my hair which left multiple streaks not colored. He seemed rushed the entire appointment and I never felt like he was fully focused on my hair. He took about 30 seconds to cut multiple inches off my hair without sectioning it off at all. He had another stylist curl it right after so it looked okay leaving the salon. After showering and seeing it straight I found that one side was a full inch longer than the other which was way longer than the back. None of it was even, in addition to the streaks of lighter hair. I had to go home and pay to have my normal stylist back home fix it. The prices here are not cheap and as a college student, it’s a lot for me to have to pay a second person to fix my haircut.Overall, I did give the salon 2 stars because of positive experiences in the past (I would especially recommend Madeline), but due to this experience I probably will not be returning.

Madeline nailed my color! She is amazing at what she does and did an awesome job educating on why she chose certain products and how it fits my hair best! She even ran out to add time to the meter for my vehicle. Above and beyond work, I won’t go anywhere else!

My wife and I were shopping around Main Street for our 10 year anniversary and we decided to stop here in the morning to see if they had any availability for a hair color (granted, it was a long shot). Taylor at the front desk was very sweet and helpful, but when she went behind the divider to check if the stylist had any time, he flew into a loud tirade about how he used to do that like 24 years ago and said he had too many things to do. Taylor came around the divider with a smile on her face and very professionally tried to set us up with an appointment, but we were so turned off by how the stylist behaved that we politely left. My wife suffers from anxiety and depression. This experience left her emotionally disturbed for the first couple of hours of what was supposed to be a very special day for us. Eventually we were able to put it behind us, but Valor & Violet Salon will never get our business, nor any reccomendations for our friends and family. We ended up going to His & Hers Salon a few days later and they treated us with the utmost respect and did an amazing job! Go there instead!

I got my hair cut at a different salon and I was not happy with the outcome. I heard so many good things about Valor and Violet so I figured Id give it a shot hoping they could fix my hair. I made an appointment with Taylor and she did amazing! She listened to my concerns(I thought I was going to have to go shorter) and she reassured me that she could fix it and I wouldnt have to lose my length. Taylor talked me through everything she was doing. I will most defiantly be going to her for all my hair needs!

Valor and violet is a great locally owned salon. Josh is great with curly hair (this is hard to find in Ames)! They have a great team environment and the employees are all friendly. This is a place when its evident that the employees like working there. There are even two four legged employees who are great greeters and provide entertainment. I have only had Josh for appointments so far and hes good at honoring his appointments and not taking forever to get the job done. I always look forward to my appointment. They also manage their schedule efficiently, so its not crazy hard to get in. If you havent tried them yet, youre missing out!

Taylor is extremely talented. I highly recommend her. She is extremely thorough and knows her stuff. I just showed her a picture of what i wanted and her work on my hair was even better than the picture. I keep getting complements left and right. I will be going back for sure.

Ive been going to V&V for a little over year, and initially was impressed. The vibe is good, cute dogs, and my hair was never cut more than what I specified. I recently moved out of Ames and had intended to find a different salon. I havent found a place that I trust yet, and Im looking to make a more drastic change, so I booked with the location in Ankeny, which is closer to me, thinking the experience would be the same as Ames. The day of the appointment, I got a call saying that they needed to reschedule. Neither time they offered worked for me, and when I asked why I couldnt have the time as originally booked, I was told it conflicted with another appointment. I opted to cancel, and reschedule at the Ames location. Farther, but at least I could have the same stylist and experience that Ive had on many previous visits. Yesterday, I received a call telling me that they needed to reschedule my appointment for today for earlier in the day. This doesnt work for me, as I work during the day and making it to Ames by 4:15, the scheduled time, is a stretch. When I told them this, they said, okay well keep it for now and call back if it doesnt work. Today I got a call saying that Joshua had something come up, and they need to move my appointment. Im confused about a few things. If something just came up, how did they know about it yesterday? If an appointment time unavailable, why allow me to schedule it? It seems to me that loyalty to their business should be better rewarded than multiple canceled appointments. I wont be going back, and if you enjoy consistently scheduled appointments, Id recommend that you dont either.

I have been going here for years and the people are what make the place amazing. They all treat you like friends and family. Always something to chat and laugh about and walk out feeling like you have million dollar hair.

Overall, I think if you request a good stylist you will have a wonderful experience here. However, I made the mistake of not requesting a specific stylist. Grant, the stylist who cut my hair, did not seem to listen to what I was asking for. He was also extremely rough with my hair, yanking on it to detangle, making for a less than relaxing experience and a very sore scalp. He also did not make conversation, which alone would not have been an issue at all, but combined with everything else it was. After the first visit I realized it was possible I hadn’t communicated what I wanted done with my hair well enough. I made a second appointment to add some more layers and get my hair to a state I would be happy with. When I returned I felt that my requests were not being listened to, and had an overall negative experience leaving with a cut that I was not happy about. I liked the vibe of the salon and I will most likely be returning, but I will be requesting a different stylist. I would recommend that if you are looking to book an appointment, request a stylist other than Grant. I feel that at a hair salon customer service is the most important part, and Grant provided very poor customer service.

Ive had the pleasure of going to V&V for a few years now and have never left disappointed. Kristen is a true hair styling goddess and everyone on staff is kind and the atmosphere is always a good time. I highly recommend welcoming these people into your life!

I booked an appointment in 2015 and haven’t looked back since! (They’re THAT good) I personally see Madeline Price because she is simply amazing and I’ve never left the salon feeling anything less than beautiful, but all of the stylists at Valor and Violet do such impeccable work. I moved to a different city, but I still drive back to Ames to get my hair done because they are that awesome! ❣️

READ FULLY, ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE GOING BLONDE: I am so disappointed to have to write this review, as I had very high hopes. When you enter you will be greeted by some very cute pups and the staff is nice and welcoming. My appointment was with Grant to get my roots touched up with some highlights. I have very thick hair and my roots grow in a dark brown. I have been getting my hair heavily highlighted for 7 years so it takes a lot of foils to match the rest of my very blonde hair. Grant was very confident when I told him I wanted a heavy highlight to match the bottom and I wanted an icier blonde because I paid for a tone as well. I was nervous because this appointment was about half as long as any other I’ve ever had to get this done and I was suspicious that he noticed what he’d done wrong. When I got home I had the lightest highlight I had ever had and it was a brassy yellow at my roots then turned to a very icy blonde below that. There are large chunks of my hair that are still brown with skinny blonde streaks to the root. I made a call to ask if they offer any free corrections if you aren’t happy with the results. They said yes and I came back in expecting him to re-foil since I told him that it didn’t match and was not to my root, but instead he just re-toned my hair. I am not a cosmetologist but am smart enough to recognize that if hair is bleached and not processed long enough, toner will not correct it. I think their salon was nice, along with their staff, I just wouldn’t book with Grant. I feel he is over-confident and lazy in his work. He noticed he had done something wrong, as this was incredibly noticeable and let me leave like that. For a highlight, tone, cut I was charged $150, totaling $175 after the tip. I have never paid this much to have this done and have it done so poorly. My suggestion for the managers would be to either offer to do corrections or to review them before clients leave.

My hair is really well done and I thank Grant for that! Thanks for giving me exactly what I wanted and talking me through it! However, there were multiple workers walking around the salon without a mask on (one even interacting with us as I was getting my hair done). I felt safe booking this appointment under the assumption everyone would be adhering to a mask mandate (thanks Grant for doing so + others that did!) but the receptionist and the manger didnt have a mask on at all as they walked around doing tasks, talking to others, gathered in the corner with other stylists (all no masks). Could not recommend Grant enough for hair color (highlights + a rooty blonde) however I was disappointed in the lack of masks.

All the staff at Valor & Violet are excellent. There are some salons you run the risk of getting a bad stylist but that wont happen here. I would trust any of them with my hair. The staff make the salon fun and engaging!

They got me in the same day when another salon REALLY messed up my color. They gave me honest, realistic, and professional advice and got me looking lightyears better. I came here for the first time to get myhair toned since my hair dresser back home messed up my entire color treatment. Fortunately, I ended up having such a positive experience with Grant and Kristen. They were so sweet and were able to tone down the orange hues throughout my hair with a toning treatment. I would 10/10 recommend this place and I will most definitely be coming back! :)

I just went there today and honestly was thinking worst case scenario when I walked in. (Havent been to a salon since I was 5 so was pretty nervous) but they greeted me right away, everyone was super nice and helpful. The vibe was relaxed and I LOVED my hairstylist Maddie. She was knowledgeable, super sweet, and gave me THE BEST pixie cut! Definitely would recommend and Ill certainly will be going back.

Very good hairstylists, been here three times and been very happy all times. Great atmosphere and some really entertaining people working there. Only negative being that with tip it is 50$ for a haircut, which is quite pricy.

I just moved to Ames Iowa from Miami Florida I was afraid that Iowa would not offer the high end service I was use to. I was very wrong Josh was amazing he was very welcoming and asked lots of questions making sure I was completely satisfied with my cut. Like most women, I am very particular about my hair and who I let cut it. After moving to Iowa, I had no idea where to go or who to trust with my long locks. I have always been a fan of Aveda salons so I started there. In Ames I found 2 Aveda salons. One is in the mall and I HATE the mall so I picked Valor & Violet on Main Street instead (and I am so glad I did). I got Kristen on my first appointment and I havent looked back. She is a great stylist. She listens and she cares and she is funny and fun! She knew exactly how to cut my hair and what to do with my bangs and my crazy cowlick. All of the other stylists there are amazing as well and they all have great chemistry working together and make the mood fun. The environment is classy but not ostentatious and the staff will even bring you a glass of wine or a beer for you to enjoy with your cut. I always feel welcome there, almost like a little family.

Today, I went to get my hair done. To say the least, I am pretty pleased about the services I received. Maddie was very attentive to my hair and my wants. She did an amazing job with washing my hair and taking her time to blow dry and flat iron. I would like to mention that this was a big deal for me because I do have natural hair thats really coily. Also, it is not always easy to find someone to do Afro-ethnic hair in Ames. The environment was very friendly and inviting. I will definitely be using their services again.

I moved to this college town a couple of months ago. The stylist astonished me how unprofessional (s)he was, even I did not expect any high end service based on the price and Aveda is just an ok line. In my prior salon experience except this one, I was treated with respect instead of ignorance and with care instead of irresponsibility. I understand different people might have different working styles that you might prefer to working on your clients hair while chattering to your coworkers , just like Rick Durrett devoted himself to the probability theory with rock music. But what if I left with a look that all of my colleagues got embarrassed and scrupulously recommended me their stylists? The worst thing is that I had to lie to them that it is from Great Clips and they said oh it makes sense!

During a high uptick in virus positives when Ames is making national news, I stopped here to buy Aveda product. The cashier was not masked. When I inquired, she said they are not required and it is Monday so no one is here anyway. My response: I am.

It took me weeks to decide to color my hair so you can imagine my excitement when I went to my appointment. I was told the hair design I wanted could be completed in one session but after the bleach, I was then told to reschedule. I understand that my hair needs the bleach but I was disappointed that my stylist wasn’t honest with me and took the time to walk me through the process. Now, half my hair is bleached to a brassy orange blonde color which is so ugly! I didn’t mind it because I thought she was going to color my hair, not live it that way! The next day I called to ask about the next steps cause she left me in the dark. I’m panicking and I just want to fix my hair but I have no clue what’s happening and how long the process will take to get my desire hair color. The receptionist who answered the phone said the 2nd session is going to be another foil… what does that mean? Will there be a 3rd session to put color in my hair? I’m so frustrated at this point because I’m not sure what’s going on and how long I’ll have to live with this brassy color. I left a message with the staff to get a call back from my stylist but I didn’t hear from her so I ended up canceling my follow-up appointment and will find another stylist who can be upfront, honest, and transparent with me. I’m giving this place two stars because the staff was welcoming and this is partially my fault, I shouldn’t have trusted the professional and did my own research before asking them to do my hair.update: 5/1/2017Thanks for calling to explain the multi-step process! It really helped calmed my nervousness. Im looking forward to my next appointment on Thursday with Kristen. Thanks!

I had to wait awhile after I had a schedual appointment. Staff are nice but I got charged $37 for a custom haircut that took like 30 minutes. After everything was said and done I got a haircut looking like $15 but costed $43. Wouldnt reccomend for any guy haircuts.
