Weighing in at over 311 lbs and faced with numerous health issues such as degenerative arthritis, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and obesity, l decided to change my life and enroll in Gracie Jiu Jitsu at Capital MMA in April 2015. I am an ordinary person who let myself get extremely overweight and unhealthy over the course of several years. I was quite ashamed that I let myself get to the point of needing to lose so much weight. Finding Capital MMA changed my life. The benefits in Gracie Jiu Jitsu outweigh any other single form of exercise, which helped achieve my goal of losing 90lbs and maintaining a high level of fitness.I continue to enjoy a healthy lifestyle of clean food, family time and an abundance of positive energy.Capital MMA is more than a gym; it’s a family, my family. Outstanding gym that does an amazing job of taking care of its members day in and day out. I could say a lot. The black belts are cool. But some of the coaches arent really teachers. They go over the lesson for the day and throw you to the wolves. Students learn things like arm bars, triangle chokes, rear naked chokes. But then when you roll, you havent learned anything about setting up a submission. Defending the mount. Defending knee on belly. transitioning from one move to the next. You will spend the first 6-9 months LOST. The most you might learn to do is survive but thats it. I asked an instructor about why we do a technique a certain way and not the other way and he said in a smug way Master Royce tells us to do it this way and thats the way you do it. If Gracie jiu jitsu is supposed to be a constantly evolving art then certainly the answer to a question about a certain technique shouldnt be Just do it. And lets not talk about promotions. Certain instructors have said out of their mouths that they dont make it a point to give out stripes. They say you are not allowed to spar after the first 15 classes. Well that is a bold face lie because I was being choked out and arm barred by a high level belt during my 3rd class. But if you want to know what the bar is to measure your progress you better watch a LOT of Youtube videos. No one will teach you things like for example, what a spider guard is. The color belts will catch you in it in sparring. And you just have to figure it out. Schools are for places of learning. But I have learned more watching YouTube. Im currently looking for another school. While it might be good for some or most it isnt good for me. Nice people. But a lot of the teachers are self absorbed and disconnected from the process of passing on knowledge to their students. And for the schools to be ran by school teachers, the saying There are no bad students just bad teachers seems to only apply to academics. But hey.....you got your brown belt so who cares what your white belts know or dont know right?

As far as MMA gyms in the Northern Virginia area go, this is one of the best. A lot of MMA gyms tend to have a very misogynistic culture, which can be a real turn-off for any woman trying to get into the sport, but this is NOT THE CASE at Capital MMA. I always feel like Im treated just like everyone else by the coaches and staff here, and Im taken as seriously as I want to be. Ive been to a lot of gyms around DC and across the country, and sadly, its really rare to find this kind of immediate, unconditional gender equality. As a woman, I know how important this issue is in finding an MMA gym that suits you, so I want to make sure and emphasize this point for any woman who is considering starting a martial art.As far as instruction goes, very well organized and orchestrated. The Muay Thai program has themes of each week (e.g. one week, it could be working on head covers, the next it could be effective feints), but it doesnt necessarily mean that all you do is work on that one single thing. I find this method of teaching really effective, because it allows you to develop depth in a certain skill, build some muscle memory, and retain all the different combos and strategies you learn regarding that theme - kind of like a Memory Palace. The instructors are really helpful during class, and walk around between groups to ensure everyone is going and the right pace and utilizing proper technique.

Fast forward a year and a half, I see a deal on Groupon, I get a job 2 miles away from Capital MMA-Alexandria and I end up working with Capital MMA purple belt who encouraged me to use the Groupon and get back on the mat. What I like most about Capital MMA is that it is a non intimidating and encouraging environment to train at. Capital MMA also has both morning and evening BJJ classes which makes it very easy for students to develop a training schedule that works for them. I am a morning person and have been attending the 7am BJJ classes on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s with coaches Sean, Jeff, Jarrod and the morning crew. Everyone in class is down to earth, chill and always willing to help you improve your technique. Even though I am fairly new to Capital MMA and early in my Jiu Jitsu journey I feel that I am progressing, lasting longer when I roll with my partners and enjoying class more as I improve. I am having a great time learning the gentle art at Capital MMA and would recommend the school to anyone wanting to get on the mat.

Jiu-Jitsu saved my life.I am a wounded vet whos luck ran out on lucky number three. Since losing my leg in 2007 I have struggled mentally and physically. I was adrift in a sea of hopelessness, only family keeping me slowly moving forward. My son and I moved to this area in January of 2014, with my wife and daughters following several months later. I reached out to a friend at Evolve Academy, and he personally recommended studying under Jeremy Lafreniere at Capital. What I found was MUCH more than just a place to train. It matters not if you are there for jiu-jitsu, muai thai, boxing, crossfit, or the many kids classes; you will quickly be embraced by the Capital family. The staff, other parents, and other practitioners quickly became more than just coaches and acquaintances. They became friends and family, some days I feel like Im Norm walking into Cheers. Many doctors will tell you that mental puzzles will help keep your mind sharp, just as physical exercise will strengthen and harden the body. Jiu-jitsu does both, it is akin to physical chess.Bottom line, check this place out! Whatever it is that you may be searching for, dollars to doughnuts youll find it here.

I began training here in March 2012 and have been in love ever since. I started off exclusively doing Muay Thai my first 6 months because I came from a boxing background. Then I tried Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and was hooked. I started to incorporate other arts such as wrestling, Judo, and boxing into my arsenal to become a well rounded mixed martial artist. When I first moved to the DC metro area, the first things I looked for were a job and a gym to join. I went to trial classes at other gyms to test the waters but Capital just felt right. Im an introvert so Im really big on energy. All the coaches made me feel welcome, the facility is AMAZING, and it is an extremely welcoming and family environment.Capital MMA & Elite Fitness is my home away from home, my sanctuary, and my place of peace. And the people I train with daily have become my family. There are multiple programs available for people of all ages and athletic abilities. Please come out for a free trial class in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, CrossFit, boxing, or one of our womens only self defense seminars. You will not regret it!

I have been training Jiu Jiusu here for close to 10 years and it has been family that whole time. Two years ago, I had a full hip replacement. At that time I started adding Crossfit to my workout regimen. It did wonders for my recovery. About a year and a half after the surgery I fought in my first MMA fight at the age of 42. I won the fight thanks to the complete cross training system provided at Capital, Crossfit, Muay Thai and of course my first love Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

I became a member of Capital MMA after my first BJJ gym closed. There were many other options in the Alexandria area to choose from and I visited many other gyms. Of the several things that drew me to Capital, the following were the most important:1) This is a legitimate Royce Gracie affiliate. Someone with the last name Gracie will be here to conduct a seminar more than once per year.2) There are (now) 3 black belts who instruct at one of the Capital gyms who have received their black belts from Royce Gracie. So at any time, and at any location, a student can receive instruction from someone no more than 2 degrees separated from Helio.3) Being a part of the Gracie lineage, Capital places heavy emphasis on the self-defense techniques which made Brazilian Jiu Jitsu famous in the 90s.4) Despite the focus on self defense, the instructors at Capital are more than willing to accommodate the goals of its members and are well versed in the sport aspects of BJJ.5) Capital does not attempt to force ITS goals on you. In other words, you train when, where, and how you WANT to train and you can tailor your training to your goals. If you dont want to compete, no one is brow beating you to do it anyway. In addition to the BJJ training Capital offers MMA and Crossfit. I took the crossfit course for a few months and chose to stop due to a knee injury (injury did not occur in crossfit). Of the time I spent in the class, the instructors were very knowledgeable and the class was as fun as it was challenging.I would absolutely recommend Capital MMA to anyone looking to train in the aspects of Mixed Martial Arts, looking for self-defense instruction, or looking to improve their overall fitness.

I have been training at Capital for over three years now and I have loved every minute of it. What started as just a way to get in shape while learning Gracie self-defense and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. I then added on Muay Thai on top of that, recently I even began doing Crossfit to get in even better shape. The thing that has always struck me is not only is the instruction top notch but also friendly and inclusive. On top of this Jeremy Lafreniere and company strive to make a family friendly environment where even the most die hard competitors can excel.

Capital MMA has become my second home. I started attending Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) classes over three years ago. I was one of the many folks who watched Royce Gracie dominate larger, more athletic guys in the early UFCs. Being so impressed with this Jiu Jitsu, I decided to check it out at a gym in the Gracie network. I walked into Capital MMA without any background in martial arts.I havent regretted it one bit. While my intention to join Capital was to learn a real martial art that would give a smaller guy a real chance, I ended up falling in love with BJJ and Capital. It seemed a bit intimidating at first, but that passed quickly. The teachers and students are from all backgrounds and are extremely friendly and helpful. Over the years, many of us have become friends. We support each other not just in our fitness/martial arts goals, but in our lives as a whole. This sort of atmosphere breeds family. Many couples attend classes and bring their kids often. This is why I would call Capital a second home. But even if you arent into martial arts, Capital has a great cross fit program and I can see these folks have a similar sort of camaraderie that is similar to the martial arts programs. Please do check us out and give the martial arts and/or elite fitness a shot. You wont regret trying, only not trying.

For the past 4 and a half years, Capital has been more than just a place to go, more than a mere hobby, and more than a place to maintain good physical fitness. Capital MMA has been a second family.Ive truly partaken in every single class that Capital has to offer (except for obviously the kids only or women only ones!). Every single instructor is top-notch; not only talented, and knowledgeable, but friendly, approachable, and genuinely concerned with the well-being of their students.Perfect for kids of all ages, there are a myriad of classes. There is CrossFit, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA, Yoga, and so much more. When I walk past the kids classes, be it CrossFit or Jiu-Jitsu, they seem to be having so much fun, and learning respect and fitness at the same time. Every day I spend on the mats, or with the weights is pure bliss (tiresome hard work, sweating and exhausted though, of course). Nothing beats my Capital family at both the Alexandria and Loudoun locations!

L. Haynes, as the head instructor in Takoma Park, I would like to apologize if you felt that you were treated unfairly. I guarantee, if you were to come back and give our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program a try, all of the students, myself, and the BJJ Director of Takoma Park Jay will make you feel like you were at your family reunion. The Head Instructor and Owner Jeremy does an even better job in Alexandria making you feel at home.
