Do not rent from this company if your goal is to have a decent place to stay while in college. My roommates and I lease a 4 bedroom house from them which has an inexplicable amount of issues. When you try to address these issues to possibly fix them, you are met with indifference and downright laziness. If I could choose 0 stars I would in a heartbeat.

Do not rent from this company, they do not take care of their Apartments and there have been two break-ins since I have moved into Gage Street one of them being at my residence. They do not have proper security measures and are not planning on changing that, very bad business.

Last year my friends and I rented a 3 bedroom home from Varsity Rentals and it was easily one of the biggest mistakes of our lives. In there standard lease agreement you must make 13 Rent Payments to live there for 11.5 months. on top of this you also have a security deposit. they tell you that utilities are included but they have a cap and at first you wont ever be charged any overages on these until you inform them that you are moving out at the end of the year. then every month you will get an overage invoice taped to your door for roughly 100 dollars each time. After we got our first random overage invoice for which they claimed was electric use in the month of April (we never got an overage in December-March even though we ran the Heat constantly those months) we asked if they could send somebody from there maintenance team or even a building inspector to try to pinpoint the cause of the overage, they told us somebody would come out to look at it and we never heard from them about it again. However the next month we were charged another overage. Upon Moving into the house the Oven did not work at all, they were able to fix it but that only lasted another 5 months as the oven and stove stopped working again. All appliances in the home were at least 25 years old and for the most part did not work correctly. We were not permitted to use window unit air conditioners (unless you wanted to pay an extra 150 dollars a month) and naturally the home did not have central air. at times in the summer it would be 97 degrees in our upstairs bedrooms, making it impossible to sleep. After doing some online research we found that the home we were staying in had an estimated resale value of 14,000 dollars. to rent this home for one year we paid 12,240 dollars. Varsity Rentals is an absolute rip off, avoid them at all costs!

I have had nothing but an amazing experience with Varsity. Mindi has always been understanding and flexible with situations, given that I communicate in advance. The properties can be run down sometimes, but if you have any issues, theyre always quick to fix it. Obviously, if you neglect a property and live like a slob, theyll charge you for it. Its a great business and I love that theyll stand by you if you make an effort to respect their houses.

If you need a place to stay off campus, make sure you make Varsity Rentals your last option. I’d rather stay in the dorms than rent from this company again. Blinds, washer, dryer, fridge door, window lock and others are fragile and break easily. Company service is a joke, the dryer broke and they told us that they would be at our house the next day; they didn’t come til a week later after complaining about it another three times. They had a mandatory carpet cleaning one day and they threw all my dirty stuff on my bed, and had tape all over my walls and just left it there for me to clean it up. That’s only a few examples from many. Do not rent from this company, or else you will be miserable

Absolutely no flexibility in difficult situations. I am currently trying to switch my lease so someone else can take it over and I can get out of this area and the hoops you have to jump through to do things their way is ridiculous. I get it were college kids and untrustworthy but they really do not work with us. Ive never had a landlord more opposed to working with their tenants on anything. No pets allowed so make sure you know that. The phone and email service is very rude and you do not feel welcome while talking to them. Very expensive and they can and will raise your rent from year to year with no reason, no improvements, and they did not email us about the change until we were almost done re-signing the lease. The only plus side is the wonderful maintenance team. Very fast service. They were so kind and helpful in any situation and an absolute delight to deal with.

Varsity Rentals was great to deal with. We had maintenance issues, as you would expect with any college rental; however, they were quick and effective at dealing with the issue at hand. Once, someone broke my window in the middle of the night, and I called their emergency number and he showed up at 2AM to board up the window, and it was fixed the next business day.I have seen some bad reviews on here, but I have personally had a positive experience (and I had more interactions with them than the average tenant).

I currently am renting from varsity rentals, and I can say with certainty that most of these negative reviews are false. We have had multiple repairs done by varsity immediately after we called and reported them. They even were kind enough to upgrade some windows for us. For the upgrades/ repairs we were never told that we would be charged for them so I am taking a guess that they take the charge if it is not something you have done. Mindi is very kind. She is just straightforward which isnt a bad thing. We always have some small conversation when we stop in to pay rent. Overall, I really enjoyed renting from varsity and have already signed a lease for next year. They have been very good to us so far!

If you have any problems or questions with your property do not contact Mindi at the office. Even though she states in the emails to call and ask her for questions, she will not answer them and will talk down upon you if you are a student. We have called multiple times for repairs that never were fixed and everything is a struggle with this leasing company. They will try to squeeze every dollar they can out of you and are unpleasant to work with. Also do not plan on getting your security deposit back. I would not recommend leasing through them.

Just rented my second house with varsity and I have been very pleased with how I’ve been treated. They are very much ‘on top of it’ and have always responded quickly and politely to any concerns or repairs. Shoutout to Mindi!

If there was a negative star Id pick that!!To start the home that lived in was not a very clean/nice house to begin with. the fridge was on 2x4s, no heat, the oven was slanted, drawers were broke in the kitchen, the house was curve so everything slanted towards the middle. My roomamtes and I soon realized that hey had to put in a new basement wall and supports just to keep the house standing. At the end my roomamtes and I were all charged around $900 each for repairs. My room I was told had new carpet but had a rip in the middle so it obvisouly wasnt replaced, next they told me that my closet door was messed up and had a scratch in it. I went and talked to the people who live there now and he said that he didnt report the door because it looked like nothing was wrong with, the only thing that would have been wrong with it was a small scratch on the backside (which I left open the whole time so it faced up against the wall). But you really had to look at the door to see it and it was no bigger than his pinky plus it was a surface scratch. The cheapest way to fix that is to get paint or stainer and go over it and it would be gone. Varsity rental replaces the door with a new door that was more expensive than the original door and i was chared $185 and that was only 75% of the price. Next Im in the military and I dont smoke or anything but they said They found 5 cigarette burns plus that ripped part in my carpet that was there before i moved in. Varsity rentals replaced the carpet and is charging me $345. Next the blinds that were in the house were left by the previous owners and they were old and beat up Varsity rentals charged all of the people in our house $17 each to fix three of them. Next they gave us nails to hang things up in the house told us use as many as you want wherever you want, so we did. We got a charge of $30 each to fix that. When I went back to check other things we got charged for and most of the stuff was not fixed. I could go on and on about all the charges that they put on us.Overall it was the worst experience a college kid could have, I advise people to stay away from them and never rent a house from they because they will screw you over and out of money.

Their practice of swindling UAkron students is unethical and egregious; the epitome of a slumlord.Overall, their properties are poorly maintained and filthy. I moved into the basement of a house. My first night there, I noticed a bug on the floor that was the size of a silver dollar. Disgusted and freaked, I sprayed and practically saturated the bug with consumer-grade, household insecticide; it didnt die. GROSS. As the weather got warmer, the place became infested with spiders. DISGUSTING. Finally, there were several pipes running across my ceiling, and the pipes dripped frequently. One such pipe ran right over my toilet (and frequently wet my toilet seat), so anytime I sat down to use it, water dripped onto my head. UNACCEPTABLE.As if the previously described conditions arent sufficiently appalling, I was billed $50 to my security deposit (the remainder of which was returned without interest) for pre-existing and non-existing damages. When I first moved in, a layer of grease was already burned into the rim of the stove by a previous occupant. I frequently clean the stove with de-greasing solution, but was never able to clean the burned grease off. Upon my departure, I was billed for cleaning services for the stove. I asked Varsity Rentals to review any pictures taken of the stove prior to my move-in to confirm that such condition existed prior to my occupancy. My request was ignored. Varsity Rentals also claimed that the inside of my oven was not clean, except I NEVER USE THE OVEN.Now, $50 might not seem like a lot, but when one considers how many tenants Varsity Rental rents to (their website lists all of their properties, including those that are currently occupied), lets say 30 tenants, at $50 per tenant, Varsity Rentals is swindling at least an additional $1,500 every year from poor college students, many of whom are no doubt taking out student loans to attend The University of Akron. My presumption here regarding Varsity Rentals business practice is not farfetched. A Google search of Varsity Rentals Akron shows the following reviews:Varsity Rentals is an absolute rip off, avoid them at all costs! The house was very old and the electricity was not up to date with current appliances. We would have to change the light bulbs every other week because of shortages...when checking out make sure everything was exactly the same as when you moved in because they will charge every little detail after you move out. We didnt even get our security deposit back and had to pay an extra $175.Such business practices are rapacious and repugnant. I intend to inform other students/renters of my awful experience by posting on The University of Akrons Facebook page, reviewing on Google, and filing a complaint with Akrons Better Business Burea.Bottom line: AVOID renting from Varsity Rentals (aka SLUMLORD)
